S ing a p or e S y mp hon y Or c he s t r a Since its founding in 1979, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) has been Singapore’s flagship orchestra, touching lives through classical music and providing the heartbeat of the cultural scene in the cosmopolitan city-state. In addition to its subscription series concerts, the orchestra is well-loved for its outdoor and community appearances, and its significant role educating the young people of Singapore. The SSO has also earned an international reputation for its orchestral virtuosity, having garnered sterling reviews for its overseas tours and many successful recordings.
Concert Hall. More intimate works and all outreach and community performances take place at the 673-seat Victoria Concert Hall, the home of the SSO. The orchestra performs 100 concerts a year, and its versatile repertoire spans all-time favourites and orchestral masterpieces to exciting cutting-edge premieres. Bridging the musical traditions of East and West, Singaporean and Asian musicians and composers are regularly showcased in the concert season. This has been a core of the SSO’s programming philosophy from the very beginning under Choo Hoey, who was Music Director from 1979 to 1996.
The SSO makes its performing home at the 1,800-seat state-of-the-art Esplanade
Since Lan Shui assumed the position of Music Director in 1997, the SSO has
performed in Europe, Asia and the United States. In May 2016 the SSO was invited to perform at the Dresden Music Festival and the Prague Spring International Music Festival. This successful five‑city tour of Germany and Prague also included the SSO’s return to the Berlin Philharmonie after six years. In 2014 the SSO’s debut at the 120th BBC Proms in London received critical acclaim in the major UK newspapers The Guardian and Telegraph. The SSO has also performed in China on multiple occasions. Notable SSO releases under BIS include a Rachmaninoff series, a “Seascapes” album, two Debussy discs “La Mer” and “Jeux”, and the first-ever cycle of Tcherepnin’s piano concertos
and symphonies. The SSO has also collaborated with such great artists as Lorin Maazel, Charles Dutoit, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Neeme Järvi, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Diana Damrau, Martha Argerich, Lang Lang, Yo-Yo Ma, Janine Jansen, Leonidas Kavakos and Gil Shaham. The SSO is part of the Singapore Symphony Group, which also manages the Singapore Symphony Choruses, and the Singapore National Youth Orchestra. The mission of the Group is to create memorable shared experiences with music. Through the SSO and its affiliated performing groups, we spread the love for music, nurture talent and enrich Singapore’s diverse communities.
Supporting the Local Arts and Cultural Scene Partner of SSO since 1978 NSL is a long-standing sponsor for Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO). We have been instrumental in helping the Orchestra reach out to the community-at-large as SSO brings music to the world. A leading industrial group in the Asia Pacific with businesses in Precast & Prefabricated Bathroom Unit and Environmental Services, NSL believes that while achieving business goals is important, its actions need to also create a positive impact on the community, environment and all stakeholders.

Battlestar Galactica There are those who believe that life here began out there, far across the universe … Some believe that there may yet be brothers of man who even now fight to survive—somewhere beyond the heavens!
Hawaii Five-O Police and detective dramas have also had their share of memorable theme music. Hawaii Five-O originally aired for 12 seasons from 1968 to 1980. Leonard Freeman, its creator, said that, “The value of a great one-minute theme to any television series is inestimable.” When planning Hawaii Five-O, he knew there was only one person he could rely on: Morton Stevens (1929–1991), whose instantly recognisable theme won two Emmy Awards. He was a student of Jerry Goldsmith of Star Trek fame, with whom he also frequently collaborated.
Female empowerment was the theme of Charlie’s Angels, a 1970s TV series in which three female undercover crime fighters solving crimes for a boss that they only know from speaking to him on the telephone. The theme was co-written by Jack Elliot (1927-2001) and Allyn Ferguson (1924-2010) and arranged for orchestra by Henry Mancini (1924-1994).
The X-Files For The X-Files (1993-2002), the critically and popularly acclaimed music was composed by Mark Snow (b. 1946) quite by accident. In 1992 while he was in his garage studio tinkering with ideas and stumped in his search, he put his elbow on the keyboard. This unintentionally turned on a delay echo effect, which triggered the now famous spooky electronic echo. Snow then searched for a melody, eventually stumbling on “Whistling Joe”, the name of the ghostly “instrument” which he mixed with his wife’s whistling to arrive at the final product, one of paranormal TV’s most unforgettable tunes.
Miami Vice The advent of MTV in the 1980s influenced television writers and composers. The undercover cops of Miami Vice were nicknamed the MTV police due to the Jan Hammer’s (b. 1954) use of popular rock songs that often displaced dialogue and a pulsating, synthesised music in its sound track. The Miami Vice soundtrack was on the top of the US album chart for 11 weeks in 1985, making it the most successful TV soundtrack of all time for some 21 years until 2006.
PROGRAMME NOTES
And with this opening narration, the majestic flourish and opening fanfare of Battlestar Galactica began in 1978. Although the science fiction tale lasted only one season, books and subsequent revivals (most notably the 2004 remake) continued to tell the story of a ragtag fleet of spaceships carrying the last human survivors of the devastated Twelve Colonies. They search for a new home, the long-lost sister civilization known as Earth, while hunted by their mortal enemies, the robotic Cylons. The rousing theme by Stu Phillips is an anthem of hope and determination.
Charlie’s Angels
Moonlighting With vocalist Hazrul Nizam Moonlighting is the theme song to the comedy-crime drama of the same name, which ran from 1985 to 1989. The series revolved around the Blue Moon Detective Agency and its two partners, Madelyn “Maddie” Hayes (Cybill Shepherd) and David Addison Jr. (Bruce Willis). The show stood out for its mix of detective mystery, witty dialogue and chemistry between its two leads. Some walk by night Some fly by day Nothing could change you Set and sure of the way Charming and bright Laughing and gay I’m just a stranger Love the blues and the brave There is the sun and moon They sing their own sweet tune Watch them when dawn is due Sharing one space Some walk by night Some fly by day Something is sweeter When you meet ‘long the way So come walk by night Come fly by day Something is sweeter Coz we met ‘long the way
We'll walk by night We'll fly by day Moonlighting strangers Who just met on the way © Lee Holdridge, Al Jarreau
It was performed by Al Jarreau, who wrote the song with Lee Holdridge and in 1987 reached number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached number one on the Adult Contemporary chart.
Dallas The late 1970s also saw the creation of a new genre of big-budget TV shows called ‘prime-time soap’ by television critics that featured serial plots involving feuding families, glamour and cliffhanger endings. Dallas (1978) premiered to bad reviews, but ran for 12 seasons. Jerrold Immel (b. 1938) wrote the music for all 55 episodes of the series and two made-for-TV movie sequels.
M*A*S*H Two classic TV series from the 1970s demonstrated the pull of nostalgia from very different perspectives. M*A*S*H (standing for “Mobile Army Surgical Hospital”) was set during the Korean War featuring the antics of doctors serving in a mobile hospital unit. It was a rare instance when an Oscar-winning movie was turned into a critically acclaimed television series. The theme song, Suicide Is Painless, was written by Johnny Mandel (b. 1925) and Mike Altman (b. 1955), the then 14year old son of the film’s director Robert Altman. The latter had tried to write the lyrics himself, but stumped, gave the task to his then 14-year-old-son, Michael, who wrote the lyrics in five minutes.

E.R. – House of Cards – Law & Order
Star Trek: Discovery
E.R. (Emergency Room) is an American medical drama television series created by novelist and medical doctor Michael Crichton that aired 1994 to 2009, 15 seasons with over 300 episodes. The E.R. Theme was composed by James Newton Howard.
From the first notes of Alexander Courage’s (1919-2008) theme for Star Trek (1966), the music has sought to amplify its core message of universal humanity. Courage relied on brass and jazz-based riffs mixed with classical orchestration in his music. A more militarist style dominated by percussion instruments was introduced by Jerry Goldsmith (1929–2004) in Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987), in which also made use of choral music, synthesisers and other experimental techniques in keeping with the original innovative spirit of the film.
The American political drama House of Cards features a chilling, ominous orchestral theme written by Jeff Beal (b.1963). Beal is noted for composing without assistants or orchestrators, playing most of the instruments himself, in his own home. For the music from House of Cards, he added a 17-piece string ensemble, recorded in the living room of his house. The music for Law & Order was composed by award-winning composer Mike Post (b. 1944) using electric piano, guitar, and clarinet. Game of Thrones Game of Thrones composer Ramin Djawadi (b. 1974) has composed numerous soundtracks for both film and TV. Besides his best known work for the HBO series after George R.R. Martin’s popular fantasy epic, Djawadi – born of an Iranian father and German mother has written music for such shows as Prison Break, Person of Interest, Jack Ryan, Westworld, Pacific Rim, Iron Man and Warcraft. Game of Thrones first aired in 2011 to worldwide acclaim and will conclude with its 8th season premiering in 2019. The now famous theme is rhythmically driven and makes frequent use of the cello for its dark mood and beautifully emotional voice.
Courage and Goldsmith’s approaches have guided the other composers and arrangers who have gone on to create Star Trek music, as well as countless other big-budget action-adventure films and historical epics. Jeff Russo (b.1969) bookended his score for Star Trek: Discovery (2017-) with elements from Courage’s original fanfare. A former member of the 1990s alternative rock band Tonic, Russo wanted to get away from the ‘doom and gloom, and marching drums’ and focus more on the character’s emotions and what they were feeling in his score. Sex and the City There was no looking back in either Sex and the City (1998–2004) or Glee (2009– 2015), two television series that deal with real life issues from radically different perspectives. For Sex and the City, which ran from 1998 to 2004, its creator, Darren Star wanted a ‘Latin, cocktail-themed vibe’ for the theme song. When the show was
new and struggling to find an audience, he used to drive around Los Angeles playing the plunky, marimba-esque on his car radio hoping that it would inspire people to watch the show. Downton Abbey The British historical period drama television series Downton Abbey (2010– 2015) begins with a telegram, not music. The theme that is then heard instantly creates an atmosphere of elegance, tragedy and delicious repartee was never meant to be the theme music, but John Lunn (b. 1956) says that he had to do something when they cut immediately to a train scene.
Glee was set in a high school where students and teachers dealt with social issues such as sexuality, race, relationships, and teamwork. Its cast performed elaborately staged renditions of show tunes and chart. In a new marketing spin, the songs were released through the iTunes Store during the week of the broadcast.
