A Note from Jessica Gethin In curating this program of Beethoven favourites, I wanted to explore a small selection from his large breadth of work by including arrangements of some of his most loved string quartets and symphonies. Through our presenter’s eyes the audience will gain little windows to Beethoven’s life as a composer; from being recognised as the greatest young musician in Vienna and his relationship with his mentor Haydn, to conducting the world premieres of several of his symphonies himself. From his glorious symphonic writing to more intimate chamber works, Beethoven’s musical style changed throughout the periods of his life, as did his views on his own compositions. To this day, Beethoven remains one of the most revered composers in classical music history with his music performed frequently by musicians all over the globe. I do hope you enjoy the selection of music prepared for you today and played so beautifully by the strings of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra.

S ING A P OR E S Y MP HON Y OR C HE S T R A We are the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, or you can call us the SSO! We have many musicians: some play string instruments (like the violin and cello), others play wind (like flute and trumpet) or percussion instruments (like drums and cymbals). At the orchestra, we want to make wonderful music that will touch your heart and make your life more colourful. The SSO usually plays in a concert hall - like this one you’re sitting in. But we want to go everywhere to show everyone how beautiful classical music is, so sometimes we have concerts near your home. We even play at the Botanic Gardens - you can have a picnic while listening to the music! Our big concerts are held at the Esplanade Concert Hall, the “durian” at Marina Bay. That’s a huge concert hall that can seat 1,800 people. But when we want to play small pieces of chamber music or when we play fun music for families like yours, we’ll come back to the beautiful Victoria Concert Hall, our beloved Home of the SSO.
JO S HUA TA N conductor Joshua Tan was Second Prize winner of the Dimitri Mitropoulos International Competition, the first graduate to be awarded the Charles Schiff Conducting Prize at The Juilliard School and an awardee of numerous scholarships and awards. Highlights for the Orchestra Season 21/22 include return engagements with Hong Kong Philharmonic, debuts with the Gunma Symphony, a new opera premiere in Hong Kong amongst others. Joshua is presently Principal Conductor of the Singapore National Youth Orchestra and Director of the Asia Virtuosi.
