FOR THE EMPEROR Musicians of the SSO Two nights g of string quartets fit for a king, by Haydn and Mozart, pinnacles of the Neo-Classical Ne Class era. The central hymn from Haydn’s Emperor Quartet was the t nation national anthem anthe of Austria for a time, while Mozart’s three Prussian Quartets, Qu rtets written w tten with w the PPrussian ssian King’s interest in the cello in mind, were published ublish two weeks w eks aft after his pr premature mat death. Haydn’s “Sunrise” and “Dream” “Dre m” qua quartets ets complete co plete th the royal picture. “If Mozart Mo rt had written ritten nothing thing but b t his violin vi n quartets qu and the Requiem, they alonee would al wou have been b en sufficient suff ent to make ake him hi im immortal.” – Haydn

FRENCH FLAVOURS Musicians of the SSO The mercurial and expressive flavour of the French colour this varied programme, featuring the sublime combination of flute, viola and harp via Debussyian Impressionism; the sultry strains of songs from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess and the unduly neglected music of George Onslow, a 19th century French composer of English descent.

RUSSIAN AT HEART Alina Ibragimova, violin Musicians of the SSO Russian-British violinist Alina Ibragimova joins SSO musicians in an all-Russian programme across three Russian greats in their characteristic musical modes. The sweet yearnings of Tchaikovsky’s lyricism in his Adagio molto for String Quartet and Harp give way to the impish energy of Prokofiev’s Quintet for Oboe, Clarinet and Strings, Op.39 and finally to the enigma of Shostakovich’s Third String Quartet, which he considered one of his best.

THE GLORY OF BAROQUE Peter Hanson, violin/conductor Musicians of the SSO From Gabrieli to Handel, take a trip with UK period instrument violinist Peter Hanson through the elegance and riches of the Baroque greats, whose genius is displayed in their rich writing for voice and instrument – for which they often treated one like the other. A multitude of solos is key to the design of the concerto grosso, a compact instrumental showcase that the likes of Biber and Vivaldi developed to spectacular heights. Arias from Handel’s most popular oratorio, Messiah, are just a tiny sample of the vast treasure troves of Baroque musical drama. Purcell’s pioneering work setting English language theatre music, and the lively dance-operas of French Baroque master, Jean-Philippe Rameau, equally deserve your listening ear.
