Programme Notes
Music from Star Wars by JOHN WILLIAMS The music of John Williams has been heard by countless people in over 200 countries around the world. In fact, he surpasses composers like Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky on that count! This is hardly surprising, given that out of all the major forms of artistic expression, it is film that is unique to the current and last century. And it is the use of music to enhance, complement or juxtapose visual images that has given rise to the genre of film music. Apart from the music of every instalment of Star Wars, Williams has contributed to this genre through other blockbusters such as the Indiana Jones trilogy, three of the Harry Potter series, E.T., Superman, Jaws, and Jurassic Park, just to name a few. Williams was a multi-talented musician from a young age. After graduating from the Juilliard School of Music in New York, he became known as a studio pianist, orchestrator and a versatile composer who could write jazz, symphonic and film music with equal ease. His trademark lavish orchestration and use of monumental brass grandeur are influenced by famous classical composers such as Tchaikovsky (popular Russian composer responsible for ballet music such as Swan Lake and The Nutcracker), Holst (British composer who wrote The Planets) and most certainly, Richard Strauss, the great German composer and conductor famous for the “sunrise” music which was used to open 2001: A Space Odyssey. Williams definitely learnt too, through the giants of 20th-century film music such as Franz Waxman, Bernard Herrmann, George Steiner and most notably, Erich Wolfgang Korngold. He was also influenced by Wagner’s epic, four-opera cycle The Ring of the Nibelung. Like Wagner’s operatic saga, the underlying approach to the music for Star Wars is that it uses specific, recognisable themes or “leitmotifs” to signify important characters. 20
YODA’S THEME from Episode IV: A New Hope We first hear Yoda’s Theme when on Dagobah, Yoda chides Luke for his impatience and muses that Luke may be yet too immature to commence Jedi training. The gentle waves of cello writing in which the music opens immediately transports us into the comforting presence of the 900-yearold Jedi master. The music later swells to glorious heights with the high strings taking over, as Yoda – in one of the many iconic moments of the film – demonstrates the power of the Force by raising Luke’s sunken X-Wing fighter from the swamp.
STAR WARS — MAIN TITLE Ironically, a grim future was initially predicted for the Star Wars films. As for the music, producer George Lucas knew using a traditional large symphony orchestra for the soundtrack was a risk at a time when Disco was all the rage. As it turned out, the crashing cymbals that herald in rolling drums and the majestic trumpet calls giving way to a brilliant trumpet solo accompanied by the full glory of the orchestra have made the Star Wars – Main Title an icon of film music.
LUKE AND LEIA from Episode VI: Return of the Jedi Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa share a special bond, not just because they are twins, but because the Force runs strong in both of them too. The music in Luke and Leia is a stirring theme that traverses an octave before falling imploringly. It is sounded by solo instruments across different registers before it climaxes with the entire orchestra. First introduced in the Luke and Leia scenes in Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, it is also heard later in Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, when Luke and Leia discuss Luke’s disappearance and his failure with Kylo Ren.
THE ADVENTURES OF JAR JAR from Episode I: The Phantom Menace The clumsy but endearing Gungan Jar Jar Binks first appears in Episode I: The Phantom Menace. The music starts off with an ominous march with an injection of a varied motif from the Imperial March, a testament to Jar Jar’s uncanny ability of getting into trouble. Eventually this gives way to a musical portrayal of the character’s quirkiness with edgy sounds from the winds, unpredictable leaps and rhythmic punctuation. 21
PRINCESS LEIA’S THEME from Episode IV: A New Hope
other times, whenever Darth Vader is planning to launch an attack.
Princess Leia is one of Star Wars’ leading characters, in an unforgettable portrayal by the late Carrie Fisher (1956–2016). The leitmotif associated with her is a graceful figure in the flute that spins into a lyrical melody. This opens with a welcoming upward leap, in a musical interval called a major sixth. This theme recalls the scene in which she emerges from the droid R2D2 in the form of a miniature hologram pleading for assistance in the rebels’ struggle against the evil Empire.
ANAKIN’S THEME from Episode I: The Phantom Menace
THRONE ROOM & END TITLE from Episode IV: A New Hope
ACROSS THE STARS from Episode II: Attack of the Clones
This scene comes at the end of the first Star Wars movie, Episode IV: A New Hope where Princess Leia bestows awards on Luke Skywalker and Han Solo for their first big victory over the Empire. The music is filled with grandeur, as brass fanfares dominate most of the work, culminating in fullorchestra development of Luke’s theme. This is also music to accompany the end credits, and so leitmotifs such as Princess Leia’s theme make a comeback as well.
Said George Lucas about this melody that was the primary theme of Episode II: Attack of the Clones, “Anakin and Padme’s love is complicated – pure yet forbidden, personal but with profound ramifications for an entire galaxy. Somehow, John [Williams] has managed to convey all of that complexity in a simply, hauntingly beautiful theme.” These juxtapositions are expressed in the music through a foreboding triplet accompaniment, a yearning minor sixth leap that launches the theme, and constantly morphing but lavish instrumentation.
When Anakin meets Padme Amidala in Watto’s junk shop in Tatooine, Anakin’s theme makes its first appearance. First helmed by a solo flute sounding an innocent melody, the full orchestra then takes over, led by luscious strings in an emotional climax. However, subtle undertones from the Imperial March foreshadow young Anakin’s unfortunate future.
IMPERIAL MARCH from Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
DUEL OF THE FATES from Episode I: The Phantom Menace
This theme is first heard in Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. Darth Vader has initiated procedures to go after the rebel forces, having found out where they are hiding. In the music, Darth Vader’s intimidating power drawn from the dark side of the Force is expressed in a sinister march with unrelenting repeated notes, often drawing on the heaviness of the low brass. This ominous march is heard numerous
The music written to represent the duel between the Sith Darth Maul and Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn with his Padawan ObiWan Kenobi brims with dramatic excitement from start to finish. Polyphonic in nature, instruments form a rhythmic force pitted against a declamatory chorus, akin to a musical duel. Interesting to note is that 24
Williams had envisioned from the start music that was ritualistic and paganistic for this scene, so for the chorus he took a stanza of text from the Celtic epic Cad Goddeu and translated it to Sanskrit.
new perspective on the galactic conflict. The second new theme relates to Luke’s secluded life on the island of Ahch-To. Initially Rose’s theme is lush, melodic, and warmly appealing, but is later injected with a second them of tense energy and purpose. Both themes eventually entwine, symbolising how new blood takes over from the old for a rebirth of the Rebellion.
MARCH OF THE RESISTANCE from Episode VII: The Force Awakens The creative genius of Williams continues to shine even in the newest instalments of the Star Wars series. March of the Resistance was written in 2015 for the beginning of the new trilogy in Episode VII. It first sounds when Poe Dameron and the Resistance forces arrive on Takodana to fight the First Order. The music is a display of breathless urgency with short and repetitive motifs that keep climbing, and bursts of brass fanfares.
JEDI STEPS & FINALE from Episode VII: The Force Awakens The music stirs up a magical sense of anticipation at the end of Episode VII: The Force Awakens as Rey climbs the Jedi steps, leading to the long-awaited re-appearance of Luke Skywalker. There is a sense of glorious satisfaction as Luke’s Theme unfolds, a theme that after many decades in Star Wars history, has become a symbol of good and triumph. However, that is where the movie ends, and the signature ending theme of Star Wars takes over before a final curtain call featuring the new themes introduced in the episode.
REY’S THEME from Episode VII: The Force Awakens Just after Episode VII: The Force Awakens was released, fans were left wondering, “Who is Rey?” Amidst the speculation, some took to analysing Rey’s Theme to answer that question. Fans mused that Rey would eventually turn to the dark side. The clue: if one plays Rey’s Theme in reverse, it would end with the theme from the Imperial March. Regardless of her impending fate, it does go to show Williams’s ability to develop and spin twists with musical material. Williams himself did comment that he had not intended Rey’s Theme to be heroic, but one that was more adventurous.
Programme notes by Khoo Hui Ling
THE REBELLION IS REBORN from Episode VIII: The Last Jedi This is a combination of two new themes. The first is the theme for Rose, the spunky and heroic Resistance tech who offers a 25
