WE L C OME T O TH E 2020/21 SEASON We launch this season amidst an ever-evolving global COVID-19 pandemic. We see human responses to uncertainty range from panic to courage. We watch with dismay as cultural institutions around the world shut their doors. It is timely, therefore, that SSO’s 2020/21 season reflects on change and hope. We are delighted to welcome Hans Graf as the Singapore Symphony Orchestra’s Chief Conductor – our third music chief in the orchestra’s 41-year history. Hans Graf’s concerts balance familiar core works from the Classical period with those of 20th-century composers, many of which were milestones of change in their time. We feature two composers this season whose creativity transitioned audiences from the familiar to the new. First, we pay tribute to Beethoven, who continually challenged the audiences of his time. He is in a pantheon of exceptional composers whose music has stood the test of time. The SSO presents six of his symphonies, his violin concerto, and all his piano concerti with Krystian Zimerman. His music will also anchor our community concerts for the season. A second composer in the spotlight is Sibelius. SSO presents all his seven symphonies, with five conducted by the exciting young Finnish star, Klaus Mäkelä. In the music world, change is perhaps best represented by the new sounds of 20th-century compositions. We showcase a spectrum of works from this period, including concerti by Shostakovich, Stravinsky, Ravel, Weinberg and Gershwin. We also mark the 40th anniversary of Bill Evans’ passing.

CHNG HAK-PENG Chief Executive Officer Singapore Symphony Group

For vocal music fans, Diana Damrau and Nicolas Testé will return while we present the debuts of Olga Peretyatko, Evelina Dobračeva and four other international singers. Our Singapore Symphony Chorus celebrates its 40th anniversary, with a “Fortyssimo” series of two concerts on top of their performances with the SSO. Two highlights are Beethoven’s Choral Symphony, and the Asian premiere of Osip Kozlovsky’s Requiem. We premiere a new commission from Zechariah Goh, in a concert with violinist Karen Gomyo. Another annual showcase of Singapore music is our National Day Concert, which will be livestreamed with sign language interpretation on stage. Despite the ongoing uncertainty, we hope you will support us by buying tickets to these concerts, with our assurance that we will give timely notice and full refunds should performances be cancelled. We hope that this new season will be a light at the end of the tunnel, giving people hope that a re-connection to live Classical music is not far away. Together with our new Chief Conductor, we look forward to sharing a season of memorable musical experiences with you.

M E SS AG E F ROM THE C HIE F C ONDUCT OR It is an honour and a joy for me to welcome you to my debut season as Chief Conductor of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. And it is a source of pride too that the SSO, in its 41 years, has built a strong international reputation. Its long list of remarkable recordings has shown the world its level and development over these four decades. In my first season with this orchestra, I would like to propose a wide variety of works and styles, from familiar favourites to new works unknown to you and the orchestra, yet bringing to you very interesting and beautiful music. We begin the season with Beethoven, to celebrate with the whole world the 250 years since the birth of this giant: there will be his Third Symphony, a Mount Everest of the repertoire, and his Seventh, adorable and light – two staples of every orchestra’s repertoire and a joyful challenge for every generation since their creation. But there are lots of interesting works of other composers who stand almost as tall as Beethoven. We will play three concerti by Dmitri Shostakovich, who is in a way a “Beethoven” of the 20th century; two very famous first concerti – the one for violin with the excellent Karen Gomyo, the other one for cello with our own brilliant Ng Pei-Sian; and the Second Violin Concerto (with the Russian master Vadim Gluzman), which represents the depth and distant beauty of Shostakovich’s last works. One concert will concentrate on Gustav Mahler: not the loud and irresistible “big” symphonies but the soft, delicate and often humorous Fourth, not played by the SSO in 10 years. That work will be paired with some songs by Mahler which are the key to his wonderful world and the centre of his musical expression. It is a privilege to get to know more and more of Singapore’s excellent musicians. I am looking forward to a new work by Zechariah Goh, and to meet Kam Ning, playing the virtuosic but also charming and humorous violin concerto by Igor Stravinsky. Together with the musicians of the SSO, I welcome you to our 2020/21 season, looking forward to many opportunities for us to get to know each other better – with the help of music!

Our Story Since its founding in 1979, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) has been Singapore’s flagship orchestra, touching lives through classical music and providing the heartbeat of the cultural scene in the cosmopolitan city-state. In addition to its subscription series concerts, the orchestra is well-loved for its outdoor and community appearances, and its significant role educating the young people of Singapore. The SSO has also earned an international reputation for its orchestral virtuosity, having garnered sterling reviews for its overseas tours and many successful recordings. The SSO makes its performing home at the 1,800-seat state-ofthe-art Esplanade Concert Hall. More intimate works, as well as outreach and community performances take place at the 673seat Victoria Concert Hall, the home of the SSO. The orchestra performs over 60 concerts a year, and its versatile repertoire spans all-time favourites and orchestral masterpieces to exciting cutting-edge premieres. Bridging the musical traditions of East and West, Singaporean and Asian musicians and composers are regularly showcased in the concert season. This has been a core of the SSO’s programming philosophy from the very beginning under Choo Hoey, who was Music Director from 1979 to 1996.

Under the Music Directorship of Lan Shui from 1997 to 2019, the SSO has performed in Europe, Asia and the United States. In May 2016 the SSO was invited to perform at the Dresden Music Festival and the Prague Spring International Music Festival. This successful five-city tour of Germany and Prague also included the SSO’s return to the Berlin Philharmonie after six years. In 2014 the SSO’s debut at the 120th BBC Proms in London received critical acclaim in the major UK newspapers The Guardian and The Telegraph. The SSO has also performed in China on multiple occasions. In the 2020/21 concert season, the SSO welcomes renowned maestro Hans Graf as its Chief Conductor. Notable SSO releases on the BIS label include a Rachmaninoff series, a “Seascapes” album, three Debussy discs “La Mer”, “Jeux” and “Nocturnes”, and the first-ever cycle of Tcherepnin’s piano concertos and symphonies. The SSO has also collaborated with such great artists as Lorin Maazel, Charles Dutoit, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Neeme Järvi, Gustavo Dudamel, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Diana Damrau, Martha Argerich, Lang Lang, Yo-Yo Ma, Janine Jansen, Leonidas Kavakos and Gil Shaham. Precious moments with musical legends. SSO 20/21

2020 One popular legend claims that Beethoven’s last words on his deathbed were, “I shall hear in heaven”. This poetic anecdote, although apocryphal, is perhaps still a fitting epitaph to a man who triumphed against unimaginable odds. Beethoven first began to experience the symptoms as early as 1796, when he was 26. He gradually lost as much as half his hearing in his early 30s. Tragically, by his mid-40s, he had become completely deaf. He died at 56, in 1827. His magnificent Ninth Symphony (1823), which includes the Ode to Joy, is one of the greatest achievements in all human history, a symphony of unwavering determination and humanism – and its composer never heard a single note of it. Beethoven was baptised on 17 December, 1770. Every time his music is played, we hear it on his behalf. By dint of this alone, every piece of his is a revelation, every note – extraordinary. Special packages are available. See page 76.

Singapore National Youth Orchestra The Singapore National Youth Orchestra demonstrates the extraordinary capability of our inspired youth. Formally established in 1980, we have welcomed generations of youths to the life-changing experience of playing orchestra music, performing locally as well as representing Singapore at prestigious concert halls and music festivals overseas. Today we are 180 youths aged 10 to 21, from more than 60 schools across Singapore. The SNYO family consists of a main orchestra and a junior orchestra, where they are guided by professional musicians in rehearsals, sectionals and masterclasses. The SNYO remains a warm and inviting community for youth who love playing music together, where meaningful friendships are made for life. Our programme is accessible to talented youth musicians with selected individual lesson subsidy and travel grants for tours as well as participation in exchange programmes.

Singapore Symphony Choruses The Singapore Symphony Choruses is a premier choral body comprising the Singapore Symphony Chorus, Singapore Symphony Youth Choir and Singapore Symphony Children’s Choir. Since 1980, the Choruses have seen membership from diverse ages, backgrounds and nationalities. Regularly sharing the stage with the SSO, the Choruses record and tour with the orchestra, as well as give their own performances in Singapore and abroad. Through holistic training that nurtures artistic growth and personal development, the Choruses aim to articulate an ecosystem of choral excellence. Repertoire for the respective choruses straddle musical worlds and styles, ranging from orchestral masterpieces to a cappella favourites, and spanning the Renaissance to contemporary 21st-century music. In 2019, the Choruses and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra re-recorded the official version of Zubir Said’s Majulah Singapura to mark the 60th anniversary of our state symbols.

The Singapore Symphony Chorus (SSC) commemorates 40 years of choral concord and acclaim with a year-long celebration of singing: S S O N AT I O N A L D AY C O N C E R T 2 0 2 0 15 Aug 2020 Sat, 7.30pm Esplanade Concert Hall

C E L E B R AT I N G C H O R A L E XC E L L E N C E The Singapore Symphony Chorus (SSC) represents the pinnacle of choral excellence, bringing passionate choristers together in symphonic choral singing at the highest level. Since its first performance on 13 June 1980, the SSC has established itself as one of the finest symphony choruses in the region. The chorus has performed with renowned conductors including Okko Kamu, Lan Shui, Lim Yau, Masaaki Suzuki and Sofi Jeannin – amassing a wide repertoire such as Rachmaninoff’s The Bells, Arvo Pärt’s Te Deum, Britten’s War Requiem, and Bach’s St John Passion, amongst others. In August 2019, the SSC lent their vocals to Truly, SSO, a digital album of National Day Classics jointly released by Warner Music Singapore and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. Celebrating their 40th anniversary in 2020, the SSC will be reflecting on their musical journey in an exciting lineup of SSC “Forty-ssimo” concerts. Through a holistic choral training programme, passionate young singers form a community where they get to hone their vocal abilities and discover unique performing opportunities. Making its debut in 2016 and under the guidance of a celebrated choirmaster, the SSYC has performed Scriabin’s Prometheus, Puccini’s La bohème, as well as recorded Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances and Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, among others. Besides performing independently, the SSYC has also performed and toured with the SSC and SSO. The SSYC looks forward to an exciting season ahead that includes performances with the SSO. NURTURING CHOR AL BRILLIANCE The path to choral brilliance begins at the Singapore Symphony Children’s Choir (SSCC). The SSCC is Singapore’s pride in children’s choral excellence and is the only children’s choir that performs with the national orchestra, the SSO. With over 200 members aged 9 to 18, it offers a multi-tiered, highly-organised membership and training structure. We kindle choral passion by fostering the all-important values for character development and offering abundant local and international opportunities. Formed in 2006, the SSCC has sung at the Istana, shared the stage with critically acclaimed The King’s Singers, presented at the 33rd ASEAN Summit, and recently released their first album And I’ll Sing Once More. The SSCC has an active performing calendar in the upcoming season and invites you to join them for an exciting lineup of upcoming activities and performances.
