WELCOME FROM THE CEO A warm welcome to the Victoria Concert Hall’s 2018/19 season. With its unique blend of historical charm and intimate acoustics, the VCH is a perfect setting for audiences in Singapore to create memorable and close encounters with music. We continue to find ways to create this connection by bringing you some of the finest chamber music performances in our VCH Presents series, showcasing internationally renowned artistes: Borodin Quartet, violinist James Ehnes, harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani and mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter. Thomas Trotter, one of Britain's most famous organists, presents a programme commemorating the 200th anniversary of Sir Stamford Raffles' landing in Singapore in 1819. We are also thrilled to bring you a three-day Baroque Festival with concerts by organist Stefan Kießling, and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and Chorus directed by Sofi Jeannin. The 26th Singapore International Piano Festival will take place from 30 May to 3 June 2019, helmed by its new Artistic Director Lim Yan.
If you are fresh to classical music, look out for our new VCH Excite! series, to be opened by Silk Road Ensemble percussionist Mark Suter drumming up world music. Singaporean violinist Kam Ning’s Loco Motive Trio also delights us with some folk and bluegrass. Video game lovers get to enjoy an intimate chamber version of music from Final Fantasy, with conductor Arnie Roth; while jazz lovers get to hear Rani Singam croon with classical and jazz musicians, performing compositions by Chok Kerong. As Home of the SSO, the VCH continues to welcome schools and families to our activities including the popular SSO Concerts for Children and Babies' Proms. To ensure that our programmes are kept affordable and accessible, tickets as low as $10 are available to schools for many programmes. Everyone can also look forward to free concerts throughout the year, in both the concert hall and atrium. Please join me to create more special memories in your Victoria Concert Hall.

VIC TORIA CONCERT HALL HOME OF THE SSO The Victoria Concert Hall (VCH) is Singapore’s oldest concert hall, presenting memorable experiences from outstanding classical music performances to young audiences’ first encounters with rhythm and sounds. Within the hall’s intimate acoustics and beautifully restored interior, each of its 673 seats offers an immediate connection with the artistes on its stage. Facing Empress Place on the banks of the Singapore River, VCH has been home of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra since 1980. Designed by architectural firm Swan & McLaren and built between 1902 and 1905 as a memorial hall in honour of Queen Victoria, the iconic hall was renovated from 1979 to 1980 to serve as a concert venue for the national orchestra. VCH’s Klais organ, with its 2,012 pipes, is Singapore’s only fully mechanical organ. It was first installed in 1987 through fundraising efforts from the then-newly formed Singapore Symphony Orchestra Ladies’ League. VCH underwent a four-year-long restoration by Singapore’s W Architects, with acoustics firm Arup as advisor, before reopening in 2014. During the process, 25 artisans from South India were flown in to restore the intricately carved pillars inside the Concert Hall. The hall’s renewed façade and improved facilities serve to accentuate the historic aura and heartfelt intimacy of the space. The hall hosts the annual Singapore International Piano Festival, the triennial Singapore International Violin Competition, and the biennial National Piano and Violin Competition. Numerous performers have inspired audiences through repertoire ranging from brass chorales to full symphony choirs, from jazz trio to world music ensemble, from string quartet to solo piano and organ. Our learning and access programmes at VCH have engaged and drawn in diverse audiences. From light entertainment to experimental theatre, concerts for children to recitals for connoisseurs, the Victoria Concert Hall has something for everyone. Activities include many free concerts, and tickets start at $10 for schools. The VCH Rose Studio, an exclusive recording facility, captures the magic on stage, allowing us to share it with audiences outside the concert hall. Welcome to music, welcome to our home.

The Klais organ, built by German organ-builder Orgelbau Klais, replaced the St. Clair organ that had been built in the Victoria Concert Hall (VCH) some 50 years earlier in 1931. The St. Clair organ was named after Major W. G. St. Clair, founder of the old Philharmonic Society and the first editor of the Singapore Free Press, and its façade was retained after the installation of the Klais organ.
SEASON OVERVIEW
The VCH Klais Organ brings organists from around the world in a magnificent range of music, from traditional organ soliloquys to transcriptions of orchestral showpieces, contemporary compositions for the King of Instruments as well as collaborations with other instruments.
The Victoria Concert Hall’s Klais organ is Singapore’s only fully mechanical organ, and has strong emotional links with generations of audiences. It was first installed in 1987 through fundraising efforts from the then-newly formed Singapore Symphony Orchestra Ladies’ League.
In 2010, with the redevelopment of the VCH and Victoria Theatre, the organ – consisting of a total of 2,012 pipes – was methodically removed piece by piece, repaired and stored in climate-controlled warehouses during the refurbishment period. Many donors and supporters of classical music, notably the Lee Foundation, stepped forward to provide financial support for the restoration. When the VCH reopened in the second half of 2014, the organ once again took centrestage, providing awe-inspiring and delicate strains of music to old and new audiences. We started the VCH Organ Series in 2014 as a set of concerts to showcase the beauty and power of the Klais organ to the people of Singapore.

Borodin Quartet – Epilogue
In this first of a pair of unmissable recitals, the Borodin Quartet is joined by SSO musicians in two of the finest quintets ever written. Schubert’s sublimely crafted C major Quintet is among the composer’s final compositions, regarded not only as his greatest chamber work, but as one unparalleled in all of chamber music history. The poignant lyricism of Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet won it the Stalin Prize in 1941 – this is your chance to connect with its legacy: members of the Borodin Quartet played it with the composer himself in 1947.
On their second outing, the Borodin Quartet present a spellbinding pairing of Tchaikovsky’s melodic String Quartet No. 1 with the heart-stoppingly beautiful String Quartet No. 15 by Shostakovich – his final string quartet. Steeped in history and honed to perfection, ‘the Russian Grand Masters’ make a welcome return to the Victoria Concert Hall.

Directed by Andrew Litton, this concert also features the world premiere of Singapore-based composer Robert Casteels’ Ouverture Spirituelle, commissioned by the SSO. The versatility and extensive range of the pipe organ make it a unique instrument to substitute a full orchestra, bringing a myriad of musical textures and colours under the control of two hands and two feet. Organist Martin Setchell, well-known as both transcriber and performer, will introduce and play transcriptions (mostly his own) of favourite music from the 18th and 20th centuries, perfect for the VCH Klais organ – from the ornate vigour of the Baroque, to the effusive, genteel dances of popular vein, culminating in the relentless oriental verve of the famous Sabre Dance.

Death and the Maiden Experience the heartfelt inspiration of Schubert’s final years in Death and the Maiden, evocatively filled with deep sorrow and stark drama. The slow movement from his Piano Trio, D. 929, exudes bleak, inevitable loss amidst its inexorable momentum. This attractive programme ends with Dvořák’s infrequently heard Quintet No. 2 for string quartet and double bass, a work full of his melodic trademarks, signifying his burgeoning maturity as one of Czech people’s greatest composers.
