GUAN QI 关旗 Guan Qi began learning composition and violin from his father at age 9. Soon after enrolling in the Yunnan Arts Academy, he won Second Prize in the China International Violin Competition's regional qualifiers. He graduated in 1983 and continued teaching violin while serving as the Academy’s orchestra conductor. Guan entered Beijing’s Central Conservatory of Music in 1985, and began playing the viola under the eminent Professor Lin Yao Ji. Guan joined the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) in 1988 before being appointed Principal Violist of Macau Chamber Orchestra in 1995. He returned to the SSO in 1997 as Associate Principal Violist. As a founding member of the Jade Quartet and Cheng Quartet, he has presented numerous Singapore premieres. As a soloist, Guan has performed with SSO, Guangzhou Symphony and Macao Chamber Orchestras. Guan has conducted masterclasses in Beijing, Shanghai, Macao, Guangzhou, Kunming and Singapore, and has been part of the viola faculty at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music since 2014.
