Welcome to Part-time Study at City College Plymouth Welcome to our part-time course guide for 2014/15. We offer a comprehensive range of part-time courses so whether you are hoping to improve your career prospects, change direction or return to work, then we have a course to suit you! Curious Kittens Day Nurseries If you are a parent, our outstanding nurseries will enable you to study knowing that your children (six months to school entry age) are being looked after in a stimulating and caring environment. Nurseries are located at both Kings Road and Goschen.

Funding Your Course If you receive any of the following then you may be eligible for government funding to pay your course fees:

¿¿undertaking an English or maths course

¿¿Carer’s Allowance

¿¿aged 19-23 and undertaking your first full

¿¿Child Benefit ¿¿Child Tax Credit ¿¿Child’s Special Allowance ¿¿Council Tax Benefit ¿¿Disability Living Allowance ¿¿Guardian’s Allowance ¿¿Housing Benefit ¿¿Incapacity Benefit ¿¿Income Support ¿¿Working Tax Credit.

To be eligible, you should be on one of the benefits listed above, be currently unemployed and wishing to get back into employment. These support measures are in addition to the existing free courses which are available to you if you are: ¿¿in receipt of Job Seeker’s Allowance or

Employment and Support Allowance

(including GCSEs*) ¿¿aged 19-23 and undertaking your first full

level 2 course** level 3 course**. * If you do not already hold a grade C or above in GCSE English or Maths. ** There is no age restriction if you are ex-MOD staff, however eligibility criteria does exist.

FREE level 1 courses! If you are aged 19-23 there is some funding available to support you in undertaking a level 1 course if your aim is to progress to a level 2 course or Apprenticeship programme.

Discretionary Learner Support Fund The College has a Discretionary Learner Support Fund which provides financial or ‘in kind’ help to eligible students aged 19+ with a number of course related costs. These funds are aimed at those most in need. The funds mainly provide support for uniform and equipment costs, childcare, assistance with the purchase of books

and hardship grants – you may apply for one or more elements. To qualify you must be enrolled on a part-time course funded by the government (certain courses qualify), have good attendance and fulfil normal UK residency rules. The amount you are entitled to will depend on your household income. If you are aged 24+ and undertaking a level 3 or 4 course, please refer to the details on page 4 regarding 24+ Advanced Learning Loans.

Paying in installments If your course fees are £100 or more and your course lasts longer than ten weeks or more than one term, you could spread the cost over a period of up to three months. You would pay a minimum of 25%* at enrolment and the rest by direct debit, but you must arrange this when you enrol, so please bring your bank details with you! If you pay your fees in full you may also be entitled to a 15% discount. * Paying by installments will incur a £10 administration fee which will be charged at enrolment. You will also be expected to pay any ancillary course fees at enrolment.

Learning Loans The 24+ Advanced Learning Loan scheme enables those aged 24 or over to apply for a loan to cover their course fees if they are studying a level 3 or 4 course.

Key facts ¿¿To qualify for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan

you must: ¯¯be aged 24 and over at the start of your

course ¯¯be a resident in the UK ¯¯be studying a course at level 3 or 4

(including QCF Certificates and Diplomas, Access to Higher Education, A Levels (maximum of four))

¿¿You will only be able to apply for a loan to

meet the upfront costs of your qualification, which will be paid directly to the College. ¿¿The loans are not means tested or credit

checked so if you meet the criteria you will be able to apply for a loan whether you are employed or unemployed. ¿¿You don’t pay anything upfront for your

course fees and if you’re not earning over £21,000, you won’t have to pay anything back (certain criteria apply). ¿¿If your loan is to cover the fees for an

Access to Higher Education course and you progress and complete a universitylevel (higher education) course, you will not have to pay back your 24+ Advanced Learning Loan.

Courses marked with the 24+ symbol 24+ Government funding for students aged 24+ at level 3 or 4 is provided through the 24+ Advanced Learning Loans. Therefore, there are separate fees for these courses which can be higher than the fees quoted to those aged under 24. This is because the loan is for the full value of the training rather than a contribution to the costs. If you are aged 24+ and would like to study a level 3 or 4 course, please see our website (www.cityplym.ac.uk) for up-to-date fee information.

University Short Courses & CPD Awards Our flexible Short Course and Certificate of Professional Development (CPD) awards can be studied in a variety of subjects at higher education level. In partnership with Plymouth University we can offer university-level modules from any of our Foundation Degrees. These courses allow you to build higher-level skills and support career development, as well as supporting progression onto further universitylevel qualifications. They are an excellent way of trying an area of study before committing to a full qualification.

Short Courses – all of the short courses are either ten or 20 credits, and you can study up to 40 credits, which will be awarded by Plymouth University. CPD Awards – these awards consist of 60 credits and can be studied using modules across the range of our Foundation Degrees, although they would usually be in related subjects. These awards are professionally focused, and designed to support business and employer needs. On completion you will be awarded a Certificate of Professional Development by Plymouth University.

Although you can’t build a full degree with these qualifications, you can use them towards an appropriate Higher National Certificate or Foundation Degree, with a maximum of 120 credits allowed.

Tuition fee support for part-time higher education Students studying part-time Foundation Degrees, HNCs and CPD awards may apply for a government subsidised loan to cover the cost of tuition fees. Our Junior Chef Academy could be just what they need to take their skills to the next level!

Aimed at 14 to 16 year olds, the Academy will: ¿¿enable aspiring chefs to learn new recipes and techniques to build their skills ¿¿give them advice and guidance in pursuing a career in catering.
