An Apprenticeship is a practical, recognised training programme supported by your employer and the College. You earn a wage and get on-the-job training from your workplace. There are three different types of Apprenticeship: intermediate level, advanced level and higher/degree level.
16% above national average Apprenticeship achievement rates Top 10 UK General Further Education Colleges for Apprenticeship achievement
How does it work? • You can expect to work between 30 and 40 hours per week (including time spent at the College) and be paid a wage. •T he majority of apprentices spend four days a week with their employer and one day at the College. • You will be entitled to at least 20 days of paid holiday each year. • Most of your training will be in the workplace, but you may need to come into College for assessment or on a day-release basis. • You will be visited regularly in your workplace by a member of College staff to keep you on the right track and support you to complete your Apprenticeship programme.
96% of our apprentices get a permanent job
“Being an apprentice is the perfect solution; as well as earning a wage I am studying for a level 3 qualification. When I qualify at the end of this year I will already have hands-on management experience and be well on my way to getting the career I want.”
With an Apprenticeship you can: • get a job - your industry experience and qualifications are highly valued by employers
• During your Apprenticeship you will work towards an NVQ qualification. The type and level of qualification will depend on what kind of Apprenticeship you are on.
• consider further study - work your way through the NVQ diploma levels to improve your qualifications and employability
• As part of your day release at the College, you will study functional skills - these are practical maths and English skills relevant to your Apprenticeship.
£50K more earned by higher level apprentices than graduates over their lifetime
Bethany Parker
Where will an Apprenticeship take me?
• On average, apprentices earn around £129 per week - which, in addition to all of the other benefits, is pretty good!

Progression to Employment (see page 7 for details) It’s not always easy to follow the usual route through school and college into work. Sometimes there are hitches, problems and obstacles that can seem tough to overcome. It may be that you have a disability or learning difficulty that has made getting into education or work a little more challenging; you may need a different approach to your learning; or maybe you need some real experience to help you start your career.

Information for Parents/Carers
Extra help in the classroom The College is committed to helping all students by giving them support to be successful on their chosen study programme/course. If your son/daughter has a disability that may affect their learning or participation, we need to know so we can ensure they receive the right support and assistance. This information is only used for support purposes.
Do young people have to stay in school until they’re 18? No - young people are required to stay in education or training, but these choices include going to College or doing an Apprenticeship. They do not have to stay at school.
Here are some other post-16 education facts you need to know … 1. Young people do not have to stay at school until they achieve a GCSE grade C/4 in both English and maths. Why Choose City College Plymouth?
Costs and funding
As a professional and technical college, City College helps young people make the transition from school, to university or into the world of work. Whatever the next step may be, we train people to get THE job or progress on to THE university-level course they want.
Our Student Funding team provides information, advice and guidance about the range of funds on offer. They can help with:
• travel options and funding
Welfare
Being able to take students right up to university-level study and beyond is one of the key differences between the College and school. It allows strong relationships to form, and the range of ages creates a mature learning environment. Our Careers team will give advice on the appropriate level of qualification and progression routes before students join and throughout their time at College. Careers guidance is FREE, impartial and confidential.
• childcare provision and funding
The College has a team of Student Liaison Support Workers whose role is to provide informal support to students who are struggling with their study programme.
Safeguarding and being safe at College The College takes its responsibilities for the safety and well-being of its students very seriously. There is a designated and specially trained Safeguarding team who support and advise students and staff in all aspects of ‘being safe’. Safeguarding incorporates a range of matters including health and safety (including online safety), protection from abuse or exploitation, anti-bullying (including cyber-bullying) and associated matters. The College is an active member of the Plymouth Safeguarding Children Board and works with other agencies to ensure our students are safe at College.
info@cityplym.ac.uk
Students can tell us about this on their application form, at interview, at enrolment, during induction or at any time during their time at the College. We respect a student’s right not to tell us about a disability, but this may affect the College’s ability to provide the appropriate level of support.
• sources of financial support and funding applications
• emergency hardship • meal support. For those aged 16 to 18 studying a full-time course funded by the Education and Skills Funding Agency, there are no tuition fees (does not apply to international students).
College Meal Scheme The College runs a FREE breakfast club for all students during term time and support for students entitled to a free college meal.
Travel There are a number of travel options available to full-time students. During term time, the College operates a FREE bus service running between the City Centre, Plymouth rail station and Kings Road (Stagecoach service 36). If you live further afield in Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall, you may be eligible for some financial assistance to help with travel costs. For further travel information on costs and funding, the College Meal Scheme or travel, please contact the Student Funding team on 01752 305300.
They liaise with personal tutors and other College staff to identify students who need help. They then work on a one-to-one basis in whatever ways will help the students to improve their attendance, enjoy College life and get them back on track.
Support includes: • texting students to remind them of study programme deadline dates • accessing Discretionary Learner Support funding to help with travel costs • supporting students to help them complete coursework • one-to-one support and advice • referral to relevant external agencies • drop-in sessions for young carers or young parents.
For further information on College life, support and funding, please call 01752 305300 and ask for a copy of our Guide for Parents and Carers or visit www.cityplym.ac.uk.
