We are justifiably proud to offer a diverse range of highquality professional and technical university-level courses, many delivered in partnership with the University of Plymouth. Most of our Foundation Degrees give progression on to further study at the University, which will enable the achievement of an Honours Degree from start to finish within three years. We offer a comparable, rather than identical, experience to studying at university. What differentiates us is that we pride ourselves on our friendly and supportive environment, where lecture and tutorial groups are kept small to ensure that you get the most from your learning experience and are able to get to know your lecturers and fellow students. We are also extremely proud to have recently been awarded the Teaching Excellence Framework Gold award for our high standard of teaching.

Regional Centre of Excellence for STEM Be part of it and gain unique access to our new ÂŁ13million Regional Centre of Excellence for STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths). From engineering the perfect stage set-up to improving athletic performance, STEM subjects influence almost every job you can think of. The Centre was developed with the input of over 200 employers and gives City College students the opportunity to work together across traditional subject boundaries, getting you the transferable skills which will give you the edge in a competitive job market.

Never stop discovering The Centre features fully furnished science laboratories, as well as multiple computer workshops where students learn the intricacies of hardware and software programming. The technical side of media can be explored in the new digital TV studio - complete with infinity curve wall - four editing suites, an animation studio and a live recording studio. In addition to maths teaching spaces, there are also analytical laboratories and dedicated spaces for electronics testing. College students can get to grips with 3D printing technology in the rapid prototyping room and the sports science laboratory enables our expert lecturing team to train future sporting heroes using the latest equipment for sport performance enhancement and analysis.

City Collegeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Foundation Degrees usually have at least one built-in progression route to an Honours Degree (one year courses available at the University or, in some cases, another institution). Please note: there is a progression application deadline and places may be subject to availability. As a City College student studying on a partnership course, you can access online University services, use its library, electronic resources and learning support materials through its web-based student portal (including information and support from its Careers & Employability Service), and receive vacancies via its job website. You are also entitled to become a member of its Studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Union (USPU) and can access sports clubs, societies, the advice service, the NUS Extra student discount card, volunteering opportunities, student representation and University sports facilities.

Theatre Royal Plymouth is one of the best regional theatres in the country with a varied programme of drama, opera, ballet and musicals. Plymouth Pavilions houses a 4,000 capacity arena hosting music concerts, comedians and major sporting events.

MARITIME HISTORY • Sir Francis Drake sailed into battle against the Spanish Armada in 1588 from Plymouth. • In 1620 the Pilgrim Fathers set sail from here to America. • Birthplace of explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott, better known as ‘Scott of the Antarctic’.

Three professional sports teams Plymouth Argyle Football Club, Plymouth Albion Rugby Football Club and the Plymouth Raiders Basketball Team - all have links to the College. Making the Most of Your Free Time Being a student is not just about hard work and learning, it’s about getting involved, enjoying yourself and making new friends! Your first few months at the College can be as confusing as they are exciting, learning to balance getting good grades with a great social life. Our Student Liaison team will introduce you to the fun side of College life. They use your suggestions and feedback to create a programme of activities for all students. As a College student, you have automatic membership to our Students’ Union (SU) - an independent, student-led organisation which makes sure that your voice is listened to and that the College is doing everything it can to give you the best possible experience.

Students on courses approved by the University of Plymouth have automatic membership to their Students’ Union, UPSU, and can enjoy full access to UPSU’s facilities and services. There are over 160 sporting clubs and societies making up UPSU’s hub of student activity. Sporting clubs range from traditional football, rugby and hockey, to the off-the-wall ‘octopush’ and ‘ultimate frisbee’, and the more adventurous caving, skiing and snowboarding. Student representation Every university-level course at the College has an elected Student Representative. The representative’s role is to proactively seek out and identify student views on matters relating to their experience and to present these views to College staff. Our representatives provide an essential link between the student body, the College and the University of Plymouth.

Costs and Funding

When choosing your university-level course you will need to consider paying for it (tuition fees) and covering your living costs.

Tuition fees

Part-time students 2018/19

You can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan to cover the costs of your course fees. Your eligibility for a Tuition Fee Loan will depend on certain criteria. You must have been living in the UK for at least three years prior to starting your course. If you have already completed a university-level course it is recommended that you contact Student Finance England to determine your eligibility. The level of fee will depend on the intensity of your course:

Full-time students 2018/19 • Fees for a full-time Foundation Degree, Higher National Certificate or Higher National Diploma in 2018/19 will be £6,950 per year. • Fees for a one year, full-time top-up Bachelor’s Degree in 2018/19 will be £7,950.

• part-time top-up Bachelor’s Degree over two years - £3,975 per year • part-time Foundation Degree over two years (intensive) - £4,150 per year • part-time Foundation Degree over three years £3,500 per year • part-time Higher National Certificate over two years - £3,500 for the first year and £1,750 for the second year (with the option of taking 40 additional short course credits for an additional fee of £1,750). Students studying for a part-time Foundation Degree starting in 2018/19 may apply for a loan to cover the tuition fees. Student loans If you are an eligible student on a full-time higher education course, you can take out a student loan. There are two types of loan available - you can take out either or both of the following: • a student loan to cover your tuition fees, called the ‘Tuition Fee Loan’ • a student loan to help with your accommodation and other living costs, called the ‘Maintenance Loan’. Study space is available for silent, quiet and group work both with and without PCs, both in the library and learning centre. Wi-fi access is available throughout the library, so you can bring your own device to College. You can also borrow a College laptop when you’re on-site from one of our self-service lockers. Printing, including colour, is also available. The Print Room can help you with binding and provide advice on printing larger documents. Librarians are on-hand to help you locate and use resources and provide information on research and study skills. If you are studying a University of Plymouth course, you can also access its library services. We’ll give you training and support in using the University’s e-resources and provide advice on borrowing material with your University student card.

Travelling to College The College has a free bus (service 36) that runs between the College and the city centre, via the railway station which is accessible to all students. Foundation Degrees are two-year courses (when studied fulltime) which are equivalent to studying for the first two years of an Honours Degree at university. They are carefully designed and developed in collaboration with employers, and can offer you the opportunity to combine academic study with the skills and attributes needed in the workplace. We also offer several, one year, ‘top-up’ Bachelor’s Degree courses in selected subjects.

Why choose a university-level course with City College Plymouth? Please note there is a deadline for progression applications and places may be subject to availability. If you are progressing to the University of Plymouth please check the course fees with the University as these will be different to the fees you pay at City College.

Flexibility Many of our Foundation Degree courses are offered on a part-time basis, which can provide greater flexibility and the opportunity to carry on with work whilst you study. Where the course is considered of relevance for their business, some employers will fund your course fees and provide time for study. Several of our part-time Foundation Degrees are offered on an intensive two year basis, while others are over three years. Improved career prospects When you complete one of our courses and graduate with an award from the University of Plymouth, you will have the appropriate training and skills needed for success in industry and business. Employers lead in the design and development of our degrees to ensure they meet current employment needs. The formalisation of your knowledge and skills into a qualification could open the doors to a higher level position in your field. The start of a journey Most Foundation Degrees have articulated progression routes to achieving a full Honours Degree. These are often one year ‘top-up’ courses available at the University of Plymouth or, in some cases, another university or partner college. We also offer Bachelor’s Degrees in some subjects for those who wish to top up their qualification to a full degree. Cost Studying full-time for a Foundation Degree at the College will cost you £6,950 per year from September 2018 and a top-up Bachelor’s Degree just £7,950, so studying locally may financially be an alternative option compared to studying at a university. Smaller group sizes We offer our degrees to smaller groups of students than most universities, enabling you to get to know your lecturer and fellow students, and benefit from more contact time on your course. Our Foundation Degrees require the completion of 240 credits of study - 120 at level 4 and 120 at level 5.

Before joining City College, Rachel was working in a nursery where she completed an Apprenticeship. Wishing to move up the ranks, she enrolled on a Foundation Degree to improve her knowledge and gain the skills to go further. “I chose to study at the College as my passion has always been in childcare and education. I attended one day a week, which meant I could continue doing what I love - working with children. “I enjoyed developing and improving my knowledge of early years. On completing his programme, Tom wanted to continue his studies to go further in the industry. “After completing my Apprenticeship, I went to see a Careers Advisor at City College to find out where I could go next, and was pointed toward the Construction Foundation Degree. “The classes are small so you get more oneon-one time with the lecturers and can utilise their expertise and understanding of the industry. Jonathon Brooks

Forensic Science

Jonathon is currently studying a PhD at Leicester University, undertaking research into developing the training of police cadaver dogs. “I always knew I wanted to study forensic science but I had no idea what area I wanted to delve into. I thought a Foundation Degree would help me to make a decision as to what I wanted to specialise in before heading off to university. “The College offered me the option to explore all avenues and aspects of forensic science. The modules on the course were very broad and offered many stimulating topics to study. This allowed me to discover what I found particularly interesting. “The passion of the lecturers was without a doubt a key memory for me. They are very dedicated to the students and always helped those that struggled with any aspect of the course. Studying at the College just strengthened the knowledge that I wanted a career in this field. “After graduating from the College, I went on to do a BSc in Forensic Science. I excelled in the analytical aspects of the course and ended up researching the volatile organic compounds from decomposing mammalian remains, which became the topic of my dissertation. Having done so well in the project and other modules, I was able to apply for a PhD position at Leicester University, skipping the normal route of a master’s degree.

After leaving school with grade Cs in maths, English and science, Dean decided to go down the Apprenticeship route. He felt the prospect of earning while learning seemed too good to pass up. After completing his studies, Dean took seven years out to seek other opportunities but, in 2013, decided he wanted to return to education. “Having been away from a learning environment for so long it was nice to go back as a mature student and go into a field I knew I had an interest in. As I grew older, I realised the importance of a good education and thought the Foundation Degree in Marine Engineering would be a good place to start. “The College environment was completely different to school. Richard Littlejohn Public Services Richard worked as Lead Administration Officer for the Substance Misuse Service, working in HM Prison Exeter and has passed the recruitment test to become a prison officer. “When I left school, I went straight into fulltime work at a butchers but I knew that wasn’t what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I have always wanted to have a career that was worthwhile and knew working in rehabilitation and the Prison Service would be a career that I would enjoy and benefit from working in. “I knew I needed to get better qualifications to go into this line of work, so I decided on a Foundation Degree in Public Services at the College. The course was flexible so you could get a real insight into the different public services and focus on the areas that interested you. I also got the support I needed to re-sit my English GCSE and I went from a grade D to a B. Steve Levenson

Software Development After completing a level 2 qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Steve went out into the world of work. Fourteen years later, he decided on a change of career path so looked into studying a course in computing. “I felt like it was time for a change. I have always been interested in computing, so after chatting with the lecturers, I enrolled on the Foundation Degree in Software Development. “I had been out of education for a long period of time and I was unsure whether I would cope with university-level study. The College offered the perfect stepping-stone with the Foundation Degree. It is also a completely different environment from school - it is a community; a family. Everyone was so welcoming and I always felt included. “The smaller classes allow for more one-toone time with the lecturers so you can learn from their depth and breadth of knowledge. Dayle Hallam Strength, Conditioning and Sports Coaching Dayle enrolled at the College knowing what path he wanted his career to take and felt the Foundation Degree in Strength Conditioning and Sports Coaching was the first step. After completing his studies, Dayle went on to open several gyms including a CrossFit facility in Mallorca - Block HQ - and is now at university topping up his degree to obtain full honours. “I decided to study the Foundation Degree because the training was perfectly in line with what I wanted to do in the future. I felt the programme would give me all the right skills to get ahead in the industry. “The lecturers are what really made my time at the College memorable. If you have completed an A Level or other advanced level course such as an NVQ level 3, or you have extensive work experience in a related area and you wish to study further, then check out our Higher National Certificates (HNCs) and Higher National Diplomas (HNDs). These qualifications are vocational in nature, as they prepare you for careers in specific areas of industry. Many of our HNCs and HNDs have progression to the second year or, in some instances, the third year of a Foundation Degree.

Higher National Certificates/Diplomas are attractive because: • they are vocational and directly relevant to your work • they will give you the key transferable skills needed when you look for work in your chosen field • if you go on to study a Foundation Degree with us, you will already be familiar with the College, its lecturers and College life!

Perry Johnson Performing Arts

Before enrolling at City College, Perry was teaching with local dance company, Street Factory Studios, and labouring for a friend’s company fitting windows and conservatories. Wanting to take his passion for dance to the next level, Perry decided to enrol on a level 3 course in dance, before progressing onto the Performing Arts (Dance) HNC. “I actually went to a College Open Day to support my cousin, but I saw that there was a dance programme and decided to find out more. Factors such as skills, experience, commitment and motivation are taken into account (in addition to previous qualifications) when assessing applications for our university-level provision.

Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) You may be able to claim credits towards your universitylevel course through APL. Credits can be awarded for relevant formal study you have completed previously (APCL), or for learning gained through your experiences in work (APEL). Please note that all APL must be agreed prior to the commencement of your studies and a maximum of 120 credits can be accredited towards a Foundation Degree. If you have previously studied at level 4 or 5 and believe you have transferable credits through either APCL or APEL, please call us on 01752 305786 or e-mail he@cityplym.ac.uk to discuss your options and find out more about the application process. Completion of any of the modules you study as part of our Foundation Degree and HNC/HND qualifications will earn you a certain number of credits which you may then be able to transfer to other higher education qualifications. Please see the course introduction pages within this guide for further details regarding the total number of credits within each qualification, or our website for more information regarding the number of credits within each module.

UCAS Tariff Points System What is the UCAS tariff? It’s the conversion of further education, level 3 qualifications, such as BTECs, AS and A Levels, VCEs and OCRs etc, into a points system that universities can use to evaluate applications and make offers.

How does it work? Each qualification and grade is worth a number of points. All grades and qualifications are added together to give a total tariff point score.

Don’t miss the deadlines! UCAS has a series of deadlines for students to meet, which you can find on their website, www.ucas.com. Deadlines are important please make sure you know when to apply. With so many students applying, it is best to apply as early as possible but it is never too late to apply to the College - we may have places available right up until September for courses starting that year. Simply give us a call on 01752 305300 to check if we have space on the course of your choice and, if we can offer you a place, we will take you through the application procedure. How to apply Part-time courses If you wish to apply for a part-time universitylevel course, please complete a College application form. Please call the Customer Services team on 01752 305300 who can send you a copy.

Full-time Foundation Degrees and Higher National Certificates/Diplomas If the course you would like to study is full-time, you will need to apply through UCAS - the UK central organisation through which applications are processed for entry to higher education. Applications are made online at www.ucas.com.
