Foundation Degrees Foundation Degrees are twoyear degree-level courses (when studied full-time) which are broadly equivalent to studying for the first two years of an Honours Degree at university. They are carefully designed and developed in collaboration with employers, and can offer you the opportunity to combine academic study with the skills and attributes needed in the workplace. Why choose a Foundation Degree with City College Plymouth? Flexibility: many of our Foundation Degree courses are offered on a part-time basis, which can provide greater flexibility and the opportunity to carry on with work whilst you study. Some employers will fund the course fees and provide time to study where the course is considered of relevance for their business. Several of our part-time Foundation Degrees are offered on an intensive two-year basis, while others are over three years.
Improved career prospects: when you complete one of our courses and graduate with a Plymouth University award, you will have the appropriate training and skills needed for success in industry and business. Employers lead in the design and development of Foundation Degrees to ensure that they meet current employment needs, and the formalisation of your knowledge and skills into a qualification could open the doors to higher level positions in your field.
Please note there is a deadline for progression applications and places may be subject to availability. If you are progressing to Plymouth University, please check the fees with the University as these will be different to the fees you pay at City College Plymouth.
The start of a journey: most Foundation Degrees have articulated progression routes to achieving a full Honours Degree. These are often one-year “top-up” courses available at Plymouth University, or in some cases, another university or partner college. Cost: studying full-time for a Foundation Degree at the College will cost you £5,950 per year from September 2014, compared to £9,000 at many universities. Smaller group sizes: we offer our Foundation Degrees to smaller groups of students than most universities, enabling you to get to know your tutor and fellow students, and benefit from more contact time on your course.

“Three years ago I was working as a carer which I had been doing for over eight years. For personal reasons, I decided that I wanted to go back into education and retrain to pursue a career as a Chartered Accountant. I decided to enrol at the College on a part-time Foundation Degree in Accounting and Finance. “I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the College and was really impressed with the relaxed style of teaching. The course offered someone like me, who was in fulltime employment with children, an opportunity that otherwise would not have been possible due to the commitments and the finances involved with going to university. Studying at the College was a cheaper alternative with the same results! “The course gave me the opportunity to progress to Plymouth University, where I obtained an Honours Degree which in turn enabled me to gain employment with Ernst & Young where I am currently working as a Personal Tax Assistant within the Human Capital team. “I still hope to pursue my career to become a Chartered Accountant or reach a higher position within finance. At the moment I am just gaining more experience, which I am more than happy to do. “I am so pleased to have changed my career.”

“I came across dBs Music whilst browsing the internet. After viewing their website I made the decision to attend an open day at City College Plymouth as I had long harboured an interest in music and audio, and liked the idea of working in those fields. “At the open day I was in awe of all the equipment on display, so I immediately decided to enrol on the BTEC Creative Sound Engineering and Music Technology course. “After getting on well with the BTEC, I decided to continue on to a place on the Audio and Music Production Foundation Degree and then completed my third year on the University of St Mark and St John’s BA (Hons) in Live Music, where I achieved a first class honours degree. “I believe that a lot of my success was due to the excellent teaching that I received at the College, and also the high quality professional studios, hardware and software which students could use in their own time. Audio technology is a very hands-on subject so being able to practice and experiment with things in my spare time definitely helped! “Whilst studying for the Foundation Degree I was also doing small amounts of freelance work as a recording/mix engineer and since completing my degree. I have been doing various bits of freelance work on film projects, in post-production roles such as Dialogue Editor and Re-recording Mixer.
“I believe that a lot of my success was due to the excellent teaching that I received at the College.”
“In future this is the path that I would like to take my career and ultimately I would ideally like to be working as a Supervising Sound Editor for film and high-end television.”

“I completed A Levels at sixth form and then gained employment as a Marketing Communications Executive for TMA Global, where I took a real interest in business. “My enjoyment of the subject led me to consider studying at higher education level. I therefore decided to enrol on a Foundation Degree in Business Management at City College. The variety of modules that formed the qualification attracted me to the course as there was the opportunity to learn different subjects that would equip me for the challenging world of business. “The staff were very supportive and knowledgeable, which made my time at the College both memorable and enjoyable. There were students from a variety of age groups and I felt very welcome. I was so encouraged by my experience that I continued my business studies by progressing onto the top-up year at Plymouth University, where I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Business Administration. “After graduating, I worked for a Spar regional distribution centre in the position of Category Co-ordinator. After three years with the company I was promoted to PR and Events Co-ordinator as a result of organising the annual trade shows and international Spar conventions. “Having thoroughly enjoyed the time spent at Spar, my decision to look for employment within a different sector led me to the position I am currently in at City College Plymouth. My role, which involves co-ordinating activities to help students improve their employability skills, is both rewarding and enjoyable, and drawing on past experience as a student myself ensures that I understand what college life can be like.”

“Since primary school I have always been interested in maths and how it is used in all aspects of everyday life, as well as to overcome more challenging problems in society. “After secondary school, I went on to do my A Levels where I achieved an A in maths and C in further maths. When choosing the next step in my education I opted against going on to do a Degree in Maths as I wanted to use maths in a more practical way, and I had also become interested in design and construction. “I decided to enrol on the Foundation Degree in Civil Engineering at City College, which was both theoretical and hands-on, with site visits, a practical surveying module and laboratory work at Plymouth University. “I found my two years at the College both useful and enjoyable, and I graduated with a distinction. During my time there I was also a Student Representative and was impressed with the continued aim of the College to welcome and receive student feedback to make the course as student friendly as possible. “I got on really well with all the lecturers and they were always happy to help with any problems I had. My peers were also outgoing and very helpful as the majority of them came from an industry background and were still working within construction/engineering roles, so they were able to share their experiences.
“I was impressed with the continued aim of the College to welcome and receive student feedback.”
“I am currently on the final year of the BSc Civil Engineering course at Plymouth University, which is the natural progression route from the Foundation Degree. I feel my previous two years at the College have provided a solid base of the modules and the continued link/ communication between the two institutions has made it a smooth transition into the final year at the University.”

“Throughout secondary school I was determined that I would follow my dream vocation and work with children. I left school and completed the National Nursery Examination Board (NNEB) qualification at City College. “After qualifying I was able to use the qualification and choose from a variety of paths. Initially I became a nanny before deciding that I missed being part of a team. I applied for a Nursery Nurse position at Tiverton College and was employed with them for two years, gaining additional qualifications. “In 1996 I moved to Plymouth and worked at Curious Kittens Nursery, I have been with the nursery for 16 years and have been lucky to have my professional development continually supported. “In May 2013 I completed the Foundation Degree in Early Years. The course gave me the confidence to share and build upon my current knowledge. Being a mature student I was worried that I would struggle as it had been a long time since I had studied or undertaken any academic work but the lecturers were not only supportive, they were inspiring and motivating. “Since qualifying, I continue to work in the nursery as the Special Educational Needs Disability Co-ordinator and aim to pursue my passion of bringing this specialist knowledge to the nursery.”

“I initially attended City College Plymouth in 1983 when I left school to train to be a Radio Officer in the Merchant Navy. “After a period of working as a Service Engineer for a radar company, working in leisure simulation and running my own business for 15 years, I ended up working for the RNLI. It was then that I realised that although I had a lot of experience, technology had moved on so quickly, and there were gaps in my knowledge. I asked the RNLI to sponsor a part-time course and I enrolled at the College to study a Foundation Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. “I found the course very interesting. It was hard juggling both a full-time job and a college course, but with the help of the professional and capable lecturers, I was able to reach a very high level of understanding and this showed in my exam results. “With this strong foundation of knowledge, I was able to persuade the RNLI to allow me to do a final year at Plymouth University which enabled me to turn my Foundation Degree into an Honours Degree. “The knowledge and the techniques which I had been taught at the College were invaluable whilst studying for the Honours Degree. In most subjects we were ahead of our fellow students. Even though the course was equally hard, and the lectures structured differently, I was able to gain a first class Honours Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
“I was able to reach a very high level of understanding and this showed in my exam results.”
“Having reached this level, I have now been promoted within the RNLI, to the post of Senior Electronics Engineer, where I am now involved in the design and implementation of all the electronics and control systems on the present and future classes of lifeboats. This wouldn’t have been possible without City College Plymouth and its wonderful teaching staff.”

“Originally from the Philippines, my dream has always been to own a hotel or restaurant. I had a background of working in a restaurant and I used to work for the NHS in the catering department. When I had my children, I decided to give up my job to become a full-time mum. However, once my children had grown up, I decided to go back to education to further my career prospects, and also to equip myself with the skills necessary to make my dream come true. “I joined the Foundation Degree in Hospitality Management, which gave me the confidence, knowledge and skills in hospitality management that enabled me to progress to a BA (Hons) Hospitality, Tourism and Event Management at Plymouth University. “I graduated from the University in September 2012 and was awarded the Whitehouse Group Prize for the Student Achieving the Highest Overall Marks. It was an overwhelming feeling and a great honour to receive this prize, and it was gratifying to see that my hard work and dedication paid off in the end. “The three years of study were full of excitements, meeting new people and making new friends, as well as going on field trips to visit hotels, restaurants and many other places. I found the practical work of managing an event, my voluntarily hotel work as part of my work-based learning and a few shifts at the College restaurant very informative.
“It gave me the confidence, knowledge and skills to progress to a BA (Hons) Hospitality, Tourism and Event Management at Plymouth University.”
“While many of my challenges almost overwhelmed me at times, I found that my passion and determination to achieve my goals gave me a reason to pick myself up, dust myself off and march on in the on-going quest to make my dreams a reality.”

“Before applying for the Foundation Degree in Live Events at City College, I was working as a Sound Engineer at some really dodgy venues, most of which closed down during the ‘credit crunch’. Because of this I was forced to go on to Job Seekers Allowance, in between doing odd jobs which included working in a chicken factory and being a bin man - not quite what I was hoping for as a budding new Sound Engineer! “I actually found the course by chance and applied straight away. Before I knew it I found myself at a college 300 miles away from home. It was quite a big change and quite daunting, but I had nothing to lose so went for it and am so glad that I did. “The staff at City College, especially dBs Music, were nothing short of amazing. The lecturers, with their practical approach to teaching, helped me formalise and massively expand my previous knowledge and experience in the subject of live sound engineering. “Through the practical and networking opportunities offered by the course, I managed to secure a placement with RG Jones Sound Engineering Ltd for the work-based learning module. I must have been doing something right as I was offered a job after I finished the course.
“I had nothing to lose so went for it and am so glad that I did!”
“Regarding my plans for the future, I intend to stay involved with RG Jones for the long-term, hoping to steer my career towards mixing frontof-house for bands and eventually, I aspire to teach live sound in the way that I was taught!”

“Growing up I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do. Since an early age I have always been fascinated by how things are made, and throughout my childhood I was always taking things apart and fixing them. I knew that I wanted an exciting and varied career and after numerous careers chats it was concluded that I was destined to be an Engineer. “In 2005 I started my Apprenticeship as an employee of Babcock Marine. I spent the first year completing an NVQ Level 2 and City & Guilds Level 2 in Fabrication and Welding at City College, which involved a mixture of time in the workshop and classroom. During this first year I learned valuable fundamental skills that have proved to be the foundation of my career to date. “Over the next three years I completed an NVQ Level 3 and City & Guilds Level 3 and after my Apprenticeship I went on to complete a Foundation Degree in Marine Engineering at the College, which I completed with a distinction. “The Foundation Degree granted me direct access to the final year of a Degree in Marine and Composites Technology, which I am currently completing at Plymouth University.

“I have had a keen interest in engineering since a young age. After leaving secondary school I started a fabrication Apprenticeship with a multi-national engineering support services organisation. “Upon completion of my Apprenticeship I was given the opportunity to study at City College for a BTEC National Certificate in Manufacturing Engineering - a qualification which enabled me to gain a promotion within my organisation. “I was keen to broaden and deepen my engineering knowledge and due to my previous learning experiences at the College, I chose to enrol on a Higher National Certificate in Marine Engineering. “The staff at the College were supportive and the modules studied covered a broad range of engineering subjects including a final year project that brought together all aspects of learning to plan, design, manufacture and test a craft to ‘walk on water’. “The course structure and teaching methods at the College helped me achieve an overall grade of distinction and encouraged me to continue further in higher education. I have since completed a Foundation Degree in Mechanical Design and Manufacture in which I also achieved a distinction and I am now studying a BSc (Hons) in Mechanical Design and Manufacture at Plymouth University.

“My passion and desire to pursue a career in the Royal Navy started when I was very young. My dad would return home, after being away with the Navy for months at a time. When home, he would tell me stories of exotic places he had been, people he had met, combat situations he had been in and the medals he had been awarded. This all sparked my desire to have a successful career within the Royal Navy. “I enrolled on a two year BTEC Diploma in Public Services at the College and progressed to the Foundation Degree. The Foundation Degree has been one of the best experiences of my life! Over the past two years it has taught me to see both sides of an argument. I have a new found confidence and I have gained knowledge and skills for employment in the delivery, management and evaluation of public services. “I will graduate this summer, and will join HMS Raleigh as an Able Seaman to begin my career in the Royal Navy, where I hope to use all the knowledge and skills I have learnt over the past two years.”

“I have worked at Western Electrical, an electrical wholesaler, for ten years. In 2004 I was promoted to the purchasing department of the business as a Junior Buyer and after a couple of years in the position I asked senior management if I could undertake some formal qualifications. “In 2006 I re-sat my English GCSE exam and achieved a grade A which ignited a new found passion for continued education. “I decided to undertake a Foundation Degree in Purchasing and Supply which was on Wednesday and Thursday evenings and fitted nicely around my working hours. The course was hard work but I really enjoyed it. I met many new friends, who I am still in contact with today and I achieved a distinction; a result I am very proud of. “Once the Foundation Degree was complete I spoke to my tutor about what path I should take and she recommended studying the Graduate Diploma in Purchasing and Supply (MCIPS). I asked my employers for sponsorship and they agreed as they had seen an improvement in my performance after the Foundation Degree. The course was tough but rewarding and the feeling of achievement was great when I completed the course and achieved MCIPS status.”

“Sport has always been a major part of my life. Ever since I can remember all I have wanted to do was to make a living for myself in sport. It was this dream that brought me from Malta to England, at the age of 15, in order to try and pursue a career in football. Unfortunately, an injury to my knee forced me to give up football and look into other possible career paths. “After discovering the Sports Therapy Foundation Degree course at City College, I automatically knew that this was what I wanted to devote my future to. I applied for the course and since then have never looked back. “The course covered all the subjects required for a career in sports therapy, including applied manual therapy, sports psychology and biomechanics. The mixture of coursework, examinations and practical assessments meant that I acquired good theoretical understanding, as well as the confidence to apply what I learnt in real life situations. “After completing my Foundation Degree, I went on to complete my BSc and came out of university as a fully qualified Sports Therapist. Since then my role in sports therapy has continued to grow - I am part of the Malta Football Association medical team and also work for a number of sports teams in Malta. The dream of making a living in sport, although in a different way to what I first imagined, is becoming a reality.
“I applied for the course and since then have never looked back.”
“I have now gone on to study an MSc in Sports Injury Management, which is continually opening new doors nationally and internationally as the need for sports specialised medical personnel is ever growing. “This would have not have been possible if it weren’t for the hard work put in by the teaching staff at City College Plymouth.”

I worked in a number of jobs but found that my passion lay in working as a Personal Trainer in the fitness industry, with my key skills being rehabilitation and sports performance. “Whilst I was working I applied to a number of universities but was unsuccessful, I lost hope of attending university and instead I developed my skills through CPD workshops. “It was at one of these workshops that I met a Strength Conditioning and Sports Coaching lecturer from City College Plymouth. We chatted and I explained how I had been unsuccessful in applying to university and he suggested that I apply to the College reassuring me that I would be considered. I applied, I was offered an unconditional place and I accepted! “Upon completion of the course I applied to St Mary’s University College where I was accepted onto the third year of their BSc course. “Upon graduating my dream job would be either working for British Weight Lifting directly, continuing with my coaching through working with a professional sports team, or I may even progress onto a Masters Degree as I feel that I would still benefit from further study.”

CASE STUDY Simon Day
“I had worked in the field of mechanical engineering for 20 years, of which the last five saw me working in a multi-skilled environment in the rail industry where I became involved in increasing amounts of electrical/electronic work. I found the new discipline exciting and interesting but lacked the knowledge I needed to become competent. As part of a personal development programme, I studied Electrical and Electronic Engineering at City College Plymouth, starting with the ONC, and continuing onto higher education with the HNC and finally the Foundation Degree. “I studied part-time, spending one day a week at the College. This required a lot of my own time outside of College but allowed me to continue working. At College I learned the theories and skills needed to work in the field of electrical and electronic engineering, and applying these at work enabled me to eventually become competent. Since completing the course I have successfully transferred my skills and am now employed as the Electronics Test Room Technician where I am responsible for the test and repair of electrical and electronic equipment.
“The lecturers were very approachable, always willing to answer questions and also offer support when needed.”
“I enjoyed my time at City College and found it a positive experience. My fellow students and I became good friends, working together and offering mutual support. The lecturers were very approachable, always willing to answer questions and also offer support when needed. The College provided all the facilities I needed whilst studying, from the library and IT access to the food hall and Costa Coffee Shop.”

CASE STUDY Ashley Potter
“I have always been interested in engineering – making (and breaking) things as a child in the hope that I would get a better understanding of how they worked! I knew from a young age that engineering would be the right job for me. “Whilst working as a Tradesman for Babcock Marine I had the opportunity to complete a part-time HNC in Marine Engineering with City College Plymouth, with the chance to progress onto a part-time Foundation Degree in Marine Engineering after the two years. “Due to studying part-time I was worried I may struggle to keep up with the work but I found the pace the lecturers teach at manageable and easy to follow. “With access to the College’s virtual learning environment, Moodle, I was able to review what I may have missed or forgotten in lectures and access information for completing the assignments “On starting the HNC I soon gained promotion into the office as a Project Engineer with Babcock Marine working on ‘V’ Class submarines, where I was dealing with solutions for complex engineering problems.
“I found the pace the lecturers teach at manageable and easy to follow.”
“I have also noticed that since progressing onto the Foundation Degree there are a number of opportunities to progress in various areas within Babcock. “Upon completion of the Foundation Degree I hope to progress onto a BSc (Hons) in Marine Engineering at Plymouth University. Ultimately, I would like to be recognised as a Chartered Engineer with the Royal Institute of Naval Architects.”

Entry Requirements In all cases, if you find that you do not have an exact match for the entry requirements listed, you should get in touch with the College. It might be that some of the skills needed for your chosen course can be assessed at interview, or demonstrated through your previous work experience. Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme (CATS) This is a nationally recognised scheme for valuing, describing, measuring and recognising all learning. It is based on a point system and applies to all Higher National Certificates, Foundation Degrees, university short courses and Certificate of Professional Development Awards. When you successfully complete a course you earn a certain number of CATS points. Once earned, these are normally recognised by other institutions and may be transferable. The Higher National Certificate, Foundation Degree and bite-sized university courses we offer are either: ◆ level 4 – first year degree level CATS points, or ◆ level 5 – second year degree level CATS points.
Please note that the maximum CATS points you can transfer into a Foundation Degree is 120. If you have previously studied at level 4 or 5 and believe you have transferable credits, please call the HE team on 01752 305786 or e-mail he@cityplym.ac.uk to discuss your options.

UCAS Tariff Points System What is the UCAS tariff?
Don’t miss the deadlines!
It’s the conversion of further education, level 3 qualifications, such as AS and A Levels, VCEs, BTECs and OCRs etc, into one points system that universities can use to evaluate applications and make offers.
UCAS has a series of deadlines for students to meet, which you can find on their website – www.ucas.com. Deadlines are important – please make sure you know when to apply.
How does it work? Each qualification and grade is worth a number of points. All grades and qualifications are added together to give a total tariff point score.
With so many students applying it is best to apply as early as possible, but it is never too late to apply to the College. We may have places available right up until September for courses starting that year. Simply give us a call on 01752 305300 to check if we have space on the course of your choice, and if we can offer you a place we will take you through the application procedure. You can find more information on the UCAS tariff tables on the UCAS website – www.ucas.com/students/ucas_tariff/.
