For Parents

Parents are an important part of our School community and educating your daughter is a partnership between School and home.

Who is your buddy? Each new student in grades 1-12 will be assigned a buddy family during the summer. Buddy families will become your point of contact for assimilating into our School family. In lieu of a buddy family, Early Learners, junior kindergarten and kindergarten room parents will serve as the main point of contact for families new to the School.

Welcome Committee The School has Welcome Chairs for each division to help new families transition into the community. Welcome Chairs Lower School (LS) Kimberly Brown-Gibbs, Chrissy Green, Carol Harris, June Lehman, Elisabeth Mullins Middle School (MS) Ali Bonnell, Elmus Mosby, Beth Thurmond Upper School (US) Michelle Bair, Renee Connell, Felicia Lewis, Erin Zide

Parents’ Association All parents automatically become members of the Parents’ Association (PA) and are welcome to attend monthly board meetings. The PA hosts parent coffees with Division Directors and offers parent education sessions with our brother school, St. Christopher’s, throughout the school year. At the start of school, you will receive more information about offerings and schedules. Parents’ Association (PA) Representatives Frances Herrington, PA President Julie Bishop, PA Upper School Chair Donna Butler, PA Middle School Chair Laura Ford, PA Lower School Chair Michelle Siewers, PA Fundraising Coordinator and Volunteer Manager 5 Welcome to St. Catherine’s

Sharing your gifts — a tradition at St. Catherine’s

We encourage parents to share your gift of time by volunteering as much as schedules allow. Being on campus is a great way to get to know others in the School community. There are many ways to volunteer inside and outside of the classroom. You will learn about these opportunities from the Parents’ Association in the fall. In addition to time, we ask all families to support St. Catherine’s by participating in our fundraising initiatives. There are various ways to do so:

Annual Giving: We conduct an Annual

Giving drive each year which truly impacts all aspects of school life and supports everything from programmatic needs and classroom equipment to professional development, campus beautification and safety enhancements. We are fortunate to boast 100% participation in Annual Giving from faculty and staff, as well as all of our Boards. We strive for our families to achieve 100% participation, too! Every gift regardless of amount makes a difference.

Capital Campaign: As we continue along our exciting journey to develop the southern third of campus with new facilities, we will seek support from our parent community during various stages of the upcoming campaign.

Special Events: Each year, the School holds

Daisy Days and every other year we will hold an auction to benefit St. Catherine’s. These are the School’s largest fundraisers. We ask families to participate in these fun-filled events as they are great community building opportunities and loads of fun!

Saints Speak Ampersand: Conducted jointly

with St. Christopher’s, the Upper School theatre group Ampersand churns out three major productions per year in McVey Theatre. In addition to acting and singing in a performance, students may choose to work on a technical crew, explore stage managing, tackle light or sound design, or even direct. The knockout performances are not to be missed.

Here are some terms, acronyms and locations that may be helpful to you as you start your journey at St. Catherine’s.

Big Sisters / Little Sisters:

This program enables girls in JK-grade 8 to develop friendships by participating in cross-divisional activities and projects. Middle School girls have an opportunity to build confidence as leaders and Lower School students get to interact and learn from older students as role models.

Brackett Bookstore: The number one

Alumnae: Notice the spelling, it’s import-

ant. More than 5,000 incredible women all over the globe make up the St. Catherine’s alumnae community. These accomplished women look fondly upon their sisters and open up many opportunities for mentoring and networking.

The Arcade: The Arcade is a historic

fixture at St. Catherine’s that adjoins Ellett Hall and Bacot Hall and houses the College Counseling Suite and administrative offices for Upper School.

15 Welcome to St. Catherine’s

place to go for all of your back to school needs! Located on St. Catherine’s Lane, Brackett Bookstore is stocked with most items listed on the JK-grade 8 supply list and most Upper School required textbooks. In addition to textbooks, the bookstore carries an extensive selection of school supplies, SAINTS spirit wear and gifts.

Brilliant Summer: From June 11 to August 17, boys and girls age 3 and up from all over region come to campus for academic and enrichment courses, day camps and sports camps. There are hundreds of choices including half-day and full day options, lunch and extended day care.

Brother School: St. Christopher’s

School is a JK-grade 12 all-boys’ school located just a few blocks away from St. Catherine’s.

Café 2010: That’s right, we’ve got our

own café! Located in the Dining Hall, Café 2010 is a great space for students, parents, faculty and staff to grab some quick eats and relax by the fireplace. The menu includes various food choices as well as self-serve coffees and teas.

Censations: Our Upper School a

cappella group that performs on and off campus, and sometimes in coordination with St. Christopher’s Beaux Ties. Their spring concert is a major crowd pleaser.

Community Garden: Who said

girls don’t like to get their hands dirty? Located across from St. Catherine’s on Grove Avenue, the Community Garden provides a unique place where students contribute and learn about the natural world. In addition to learning activities, the girls grow vegetables and fruits which they donate to local food banks.

Daisy: The daisy is the beloved school flower and continues to be included in time-honored traditions such as the Daisy Chain at graduation and Daisy Days. The daisy is used as a decorative element.

Daisy Days: Festival, extravaganza, palooza, Daisy Days can’t be defined by only one of these terms. Held annually in the spring, Daisy Days attracts people from all over Richmond to campus for shopping, outdoor games, food trucks, a petting zoo, cake walks, dance parties, you name it.

The Green: The patch of grass

that brings it all together. The beautiful Green is located at the center of campus and is often filled with students. Common scenes on the Green include athletic practices, kickball during recess, school-wide events, P.E., studying and general outdoor frolicking.

www. st.catherines .org  16

Gold/White: Gold and White represent so much

more than our official School colors. In the fall, students will be assigned a team color. Throughout the year, the Gold and White teams engage in school spirit competitions, which culminate with the winning team receiving the Gold/White Cup at the end of the year (and bragging rights for the next school year). And it happens to be one of the School’s longest enduring traditions, dating back to our founder Miss Jennie.

Gold/White Cheer Rally:

A tradition since 1926, the Gold/White Cheer Rally is one of the many activities within the year long Gold/White competition for the Gold/White trophy. During the annual event, the entire school gathers to watch teams compete through creative skits, songs, dances and games. 17 Welcome to St. Catherine’s

Extended Day: The Extended Day

program offers after-school care for Lower and Middle School boys and girls on St. Christopher’s campus. A variety of learning spaces from a dance studio to a woodworking studio create a world of fun activities for students to enjoy. The teachers even squeeze in time for homework!

Fourthies: These ladies rule the school, the Lower School, that is. Upon entering fourth grade, students are given a yellow hat and increased responsibilities in school life, including car pool duty and leadership roles with the younger girls.

Intensive Studies Program (ISP):

Focused and enterprising Upper School students can explore their chosen field by becoming Intensive Studies Scholars in the Arts, Entrepreneurship, Global Engagement or STEM. Students can apply in their sophomore year and embark upon a multi-year journey combining coursework, real-life experiences, research, community service and a Capstone project.

Joint Event: This term is often used to

describe activities or events held for both St. Catherine’s and St. Christopher’s.

Joni: The Joni Rodman Dance

Theatre is a performing group for Upper School students that stresses creative expression through improvisational and student-choreographed productions. The Middle School performing groups are La Petite Joni, Just Joni Dancers and Joni Fusion.

Goochland Fields: We have an athletics

complex in Goochland County where softball, field hockey, soccer and lacrosse practices and games take place. We also use this land for outdoor education and exploration.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day: Each year in April, St. Catherine’s

students welcome their grandparents and special friends of young and old to campus. As part of this exciting day, guests enjoy student performances, exhibits and classroom visits. This event alternates between divisions every other year.
