Junior Kindergarten In April, the Junior Kindergarten children wrote, performed and produced plays for each other. Mrs. Ashlock's group created a live action movie called "Birdie Talk in JK," in which some of the JKers transformed into birds by magic, surprising other JKers who arrived at the JK house. In the end, Ms. Medinger, who had been turned into a wizard, saved the day, and all were returned to their rightful form. Mrs. Oken-Wright's group created a shadow puppet play, called "Dragons And Fire," a struggle between good and evil, destruction and renewal. The girls wrote the play, made the shadow puppets, learned to take the perspective of the audience seeing shadows (They have to be in profile! Therefore, the girls had to learn how to draw characters in profile), and produced a video, which they shared with Mrs. Ashlock's group. The children delighted in keeping the proceedings hidden from each other, which made the great reveals all the more exciting for both audience and performers.
Kindergarten Our kindergarten girls have been busy with many springtime activities in and out of the classroom. The girls have investigated and explored animals and plant life that come alive in spring. The students have many animals and plants on display in their classrooms. They learned about symmetry by observing many symmetrical patterns that occur in nature, especially butterflies! Their eggs were cared for in the incubators, and there was a lot of excitement when baby chicks started to hatch. The girls read, write and practice number bonds more and more each day. The girls have even made “number bond flowers!”

First Grade Grade 1 has been busy learning about organisms and living things! The girls have terrariums and aquariums in their classrooms and are making observations about the different woodland and freshwater plants and animals inside. They have also been learning a lot about animals! Each first grader is becoming an "animal expert" by researching an animal - learning all about what it likes to eat, its habitat and other different interesting facts about it.
Second Grade The second graders have had a busy spring! The highlight was their field trip to Jamestown where the girls learned more about our exciting Virginia history.

Third Grade
When they haven't been jumping in the pool across the Green, the third graders have been making tracks in and around Richmond, learning about our great state of Virginia. They had an excellent trip to Pamplin Historical Park where they joined a platoon, hiked the battlefield, trained with "rifles", and experienced the life of a civil war soldier at their fantastic museum. The girls listened with rapt attention to stories that explained the history-defining events that took place there. Another trip led them to the home of Richmond's own Maggie Lena Walker. Her inspirational story and her wise words were presented to the students as they toured her home, watched a short film about her life, and role-played famous African Americans of the time at the exhibit hall. Her life was an amazing example for the students of the difference one person is able to make in the lives of many others. The travel plans aren't finished yet! Choir is heading off to Busch Gardens soon, and the Canal cruise and grade-level picnic are coming up as well. What an exciting end to the school year! Thank you to all of the parent volunteers who have helped on all our trips.

The Fourthies have been busy in the last months of school. They created movie posters or magazine covers for their mothers for Mother's Day, which turned out so well. The girls visited the Middle School for the fifth grade orientation. They returned excited for their new adventure next year!
