SAINT FRANCIS HIGH SCHOOL DECEMBER EDITION 2021-2022
“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:11
SAINT FRANCIS To the Families of Saint Francis High School,
Merry Christmas everyone. I hope that are families are doing well and are looking forward to our upcoming Christmas break. Seeing the excitement in our students over the past few days has been a real joy. I was amazed at how many of our students got into the spirit of Christmas. This week students enjoyed singing Christmas Carols in the cafeteria and many participated in this week’s Christmas Colours and Accessory Day, Pajama Day, Ugly Christmas Sweater Day. In the spirit of Christmas our students were able to provide 22 food hampers to Saint Francis families with over $5600 dollars in gift cards being distributed. Special thanks and recognition are provided to Geremia Family Trust, Student Council, School Council for donating the funds for the gift cards. Thus far, our school community has had relatively few COVID19 cases being reported and are pleased to report that the first four months of the school year have been exciting and enjoyable for both our students and staff. It is great to see our students’ playing sports and putting on drama productions, music concerts, and dance shows. Overall, there is a positive tone in the school and our staff and students are making the most out of each day despite the continuing COVID19 restrictions. Our grade ten students have added great energy and spirit to our school community. They are truly Browns, and they have already demonstrated a desire to bring leadership and their own voice. The grade elevens and twelves find themselves very busy focusing on academics and school life. Overall, our students have been very purposeful in their work at Saint Francis with a notable heightened sense of engagement dedicated to learning. We are anticipating that they will perform well on their Diploma and final exams this coming January. Saint Francis has recently hosted many great events showcasing the talents and gifts of our wonderful students. Some of the events include: The Fine Arts Gala featuring student artwork, dance, jazz band choir performance, the onstage production of “Village of Idiots”, Jr. Girls B-Ball tournament, the Mini S.F.I., Saint Francis food drive, “All I Want for Christmas” (YouTube Virtual) Music Christmas Concert and the “Live Love Dance” dance show. Our athletic teams have also enjoyed great success with our Div. 1 Soccer Girls capturing the City Title. Our Junior and Senior Football teams also did well. Juniors making it to the quarter finals and our Senior team came so close to winning Cities against our rivals the Notre Dame Pride. It was a difficult defeat, but our Senior team moved on to participate in the Provincial Championship game where we ended up 2 nd overall in the province. Go Browns Go! Thank you, parents, for your support over the first half of this school year. We are very appreciative of the efforts and dedication of the School Council executive and all those parents who volunteer in our school community. Saint Francis has a long tradition of parents and staff working together to enhance the educational experience for our students. May God bless our families with peace and joy in the new year. May the holy spirit enter your hearts and bring you closer to the eternal harmony of being one with the Lord. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the staff at Saint Francis.

We’ve had a smooth start to the 2021-2022 school year and we are delighted that parents will be able to be more involved. A great way to stay connected with all the happenings at the school is to attend one of the school council meetings. Our principal, Mr. Mark Berger, attends every council meeting and brings a wealth of information and news to share with the parents. Please consider joining us at our next meeting on Wednesday February 23rd via Microsoft Teams. Simply RSVP to our school secretary, Mrs. Marisa Auvigne at marisa.auvigne@cssd.ab.ca and then a link will be sent to you via an email before the meeting. We look forward to meeting you! In a normal school year, there are many volunteer projects that parents can assist with at the school. During the pandemic however, these special events and projects will only happen if approved by the principal in coordination with the Calgary Catholic School District. We welcome parents to sign up on the volunteer database for these potential opportunities. By adding your name to the database, you will receive emails about volunteer opportunities at the school. We do not send out mass emails regarding volunteer requests; only those who have signed up will receive the notifications about volunteering. You are not committing to anything by signing up. Throughout the year, we may require volunteers for: textbook distribution, athletics, fundraising, graduation events, and the staff appreciation lunch. If you are interested in signing up, please visit the following link: St. Francis Parent Volunteer Form On Monday November 29th, we held the plant pick-up for the Winter Plant Fundraiser. Our wonderful neighbours at Canadian Martyrs Church kindly let us use their garage and the weather was lovely. Thank you to everyone who supported our fundraiser. $1800 was raised in support of school projects. In the spring, we will have our Spring Plant Fundraiser where we will sell beautiful, locally-grown plants. Both plant sales help raise money in support of school council initiatives, such as enhancements to our Learning Commons and the annual year-end luncheon to thank our wonderful staff at Saint Francis. These seasonal fundraisers are a great way to encourage our friends and family to have beautiful plants to enjoy while supporting our school. Plant order forms will go out in April. We look forward to a rewarding school year. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to reach out to us at stfrancis@schoolcouncil.cssd.ab.ca. Christmas is a joyful time of year, but also a stressful one. It is very easy to get weighed down by the demands of the season and the constant effort of trying to complete all of the tasks on our to-do list. It seems to be never ending. We scour Pinterest for the perfect Christmas dinner theme and decorating ideas. Here’s a thought, how about we make Jesus the theme? After all that is what Christmas is all about. Why do we have to make things so complicated? Sometimes we forget the four virtues that Jesus brings to us: hope, love, joy and peace. If we stop for a moment to think about where these virtues play out in our own life, we can find a deeper connection to the true meaning of Jesus in the world today. It is important to teach our children that the greatest gifts are not the ones that money can buy, but the ones that reflect these virtues. How do we bring love, joy and peace to the world? How do we offer hope to those in despair? On Christmas we light the final Christ candle in the center of the wreath. It symbolizes that Jesus is the light of the world. As we celebrate Christmas, let us celebrate the joy that this light brings to us. This year our Saint Francis community came together to support families in need. We raised approximately $1400 to support our hamper program and those in need in our community. Special thanks to Parent Council for their donation, the Social Justice club for all their work raising money by participating in the 30 hour famine and making all the hampers. Also thank you to Lisa McGovern and Loblaws for the donating the re-usable bags for our hampers.

Senior Football After a year with the cancellation of football due to Covid-19, this year's season was a complete unknown. We started off the year with an exhibition loss in Lethbridge and then went on to win seven games in a row beating Notre Dame during the regular season. Unfortunately, we lost to Notre Dame in the City Finals in the final minute. The team picked themselves up, brushed themselves off and went north to Edmonton to defeat the number one ranked Salisbury Sabres! This qualified the team for a backdoor birth to the Provincial Finals against the perennial powerhouse Harry Ainlay. We knew this would be a tough one as we have faced Harry Ainlay three times previously in the Provincial Finals, in the last three seasons. However, we had a tough day and unfortunately lost in the provincial finals. As we always do, we will learn from this season and be back bigger, faster, stronger next year. Go Browns Go!
Junior Football
Senior Girls Volleyball The senior volleyball season officially came to an end in a Tiebreaker set 25-23 to Foothills Comp. The girls played almost as much volleyball in 2 days as they did in their shortened league schedule. Imagine what this team might have done had they had their full season of games. So, ladies, you should be very proud finishing 3rd in the city to earn a berth at provincials. We want to wish the girls all the best in their club season and all the best to our graduating grade 12s. Congratulations to the Senior Volleyball team for being chosen as the recipient for the ASAA Sportsmanship Banner for 4A Girls Volleyball at the 2021 4A Volleyball Provincial Championships! Way to go! Coach Kelly and Berze
Junior Girls Volleyball Even though we lost our first game in playoffs to Western Canada, we met our goal of securing a spot in the Division 1 Playoffs. Our team developed so much over the shortened season and will continue to do so throughout their club season. We would like to thank the girls for their energy, commitment and coachability. Thank you, parents, for your cheering and support throughout the season. Go Browns Go Coach Thompson and Berze
Senior Boys Volleyball
Senior Boys had a great and entertaining season, making it to the division 2 quarter finals. Every player contributed to our overall success as a team, and we couldn’t be more proud. While we look forward to next year, we are sad to say goodbye to our grade 12s (Connor, Adam, Nathan, Reese, Tyler, Colin, Van and Evan) and wish them all the best!
Junior Boys Volleyball The Saint Francis Browns Junior Boys Volleyball Team had a spectacular season that saw the team progress tremendously in all aspects of the game. Three players (Jonas, David, Daniel) took turns captaining the team throughout the season and each of them led the team with integrity, enthusiasm, and positivity. Much of the season was spent building skills and cohesion within the group of players and the joy and camaraderie continued to grow right up to the Division 2 Semi-Finals. Tremendous blocks were put up by AJ, Dom, Anders, and Erik, while point-scoring hits rained down from Carter, David, Teo, and Daniel. Our setter Jonas (and replacement setters Carter, AJ, and Erik) calmly moved Volleyballs into position with great flexibility and speed throughout the season. Great support also came from Arion, Jan, Fariyes, and Hech who put up important points during serves. While our season stopped one game short of the City Finals, each and every player showed a tremendous amount of positivity and growth, as well as great leadership both on and off the court. Coach Senkow and Coach Lovasz want to congratulate the players for their exemplary performance and conduct and thank them for a very enjoyable season. Go Browns!
Senior Girls Basketball Team The senior girls basketball team is glad to be back on the court this season. After a year off because of COVID the girls have put in the work thus far to compete in the highest division in the city. The team has 6 grade 12’s and 6 grade 11’s which is a great balance going forward. The Browns look forward to competing and trying to earn a provincial berth!
Junior Girls Basketball Team The Junior Girls Basketball team is off to a great start this season. They have already played in two tournaments and two league games. They were the 2nd place team in our home tournament, losing a close battle by 1 point. They were the consolation winners at the Western Tournament last weekend. We have come out on top in our league games and are 2-0 so far this season. The girls are great at working as a team, and have already seen big improvements in skill. We are very excited about this talented group of girls, and what is to come this season!
Senior Boys Basketball Team
Junior Boys Basketball Team
The senior boys basketball team is a very athletic, aggressive and fast paced group. We have eight returning players who have unfinished business. This group has high expectations and we’re looking forward to a strong season.
The boys have shown tenacity, good sportsmanship, and are constantly pushing themselves to develop their skills and abilities. This team truly represents what it means to be a Brown.

Gender Equity Movement Club The Gender Equity Movement Club is a club that provides a safe space for both genders to meet and discuss issues surrounding gender inequity and gender-based issues in the world. Our fall goal has been a focus on gender-based violence and showcasing how day to day interactions, language and socially constructed gender labels, stereotypes and expectations can contribute to a culture of violence against women and girls. The club will have a visual showcase from November 19th – 30th and is working on developing student awareness through a student action campaign, morning announcements to encourage allyship and the involvement of guest speakers. Gender Equity Movement Club meets weekly Thursdays at lunch in room B121. New members always welcome!

Beginning in mid September of 2021, the drama students of Saint Francis High School began working tirelessly to bring you this year’s fall production, “Village of Idiots.” This hilarious comedy, written by John Lazarus, takes place in Poland, in the small Jewish village of Chelm, during the latter part of the nineteenth century. The plot follows a year in the life of the Chelmniks and focuses on Yosef, a young outsider with a cryptic and curious past. In a humorous, lively and surprising chain of events, Yosef and the villagers of Chelm must prepare for the impending pogrom planned by the Imperial Russian Army and led by a mercilessly unforgiving Cossack officer. From the auditions and the early stages of production to the final curtain-call, the teachers, actors and tech personnel have spent countless hours learning, growing and perfecting their respective tasks in order to get the show from script to stage seamlessly. As in most theatrical productions, there were high highs and low lows, but it was all worth it when it was finally ready to perform for an audience. Thank you to all of the cast and crew and everyone who was involved in the production, but most of all, thank you to those who made time out of their busy lives to come out and support the arts at Saint Francis High, it really means the world! Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Genevieve U. (Grade 12)

Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) Is a career in the Trades something you might want to explore? RAP may enable you to gain experience in a trade to see if it is a career possibility for you. These are paid, full time summer positions and enable a student to earn credits based on the hours worked. Applications are available on your D2L homepage under “District Academic Programs” and are due in April, however students are encouraged to submit them earlier. This is a competitive application process so students will need to include a cover letter, resume and a teacher recommendation. A valid driver’s license is highly recommended when applying to this program. Pre-Employment Programs In partnership with SAIT students can pursue a Dual Credit Certificate in Welding or Carpentry. This program covers the first-year technical training in these trades and runs for a full year starting in September 2022. Students will attend classes at SAIT from 8:30 – 11:30am, Mon to Thurs. Applications are available on your D2L homepage under “District Academic Programs” and are due in May. Pipe trades, Electrical or Mechanical Insulator? These trade unions are offering a hands-on program for one semester starting February 2022. Students will attend classes at the union hall from 8:30 – 11:30am, Mon to Thurs, for the semester in state-of-the-art facilities. A Culinary Internship is also available through the Teatro Restaurant Group and runs April to May. Again, these are competitive programs, so a placement in the program is not guaranteed.

Self Assessment – Interests, Skills, Values and Personality Post Secondary Exploration Occupational Research Job Search - Resumes, Cover Letters and Interview Writing Volunteer Opportunities Off Campus and Summer Program support and assistance What is Career Planning? Career planning is a unique life long process for each person. Your Career Practitioner will work with you to learn more about how your interests, skills, values and personality impact your choice of career direction. It is an active process that students begin in their Career and Life Management class and continues with meetings with your Career Practitioner and your Student Services counselor. You will be making career decisions throughout your life. Does the Career Centre offer Career Tests and Assessments? Any “career tests” are tools for students to learn more about themselves and potential careers that may be of interest to them. The “tests” are designed to provide career suggestions for exploration but there is no test that will tell a student what they should choose as a career. The goal is for the students to learn as much as they can about themselves and the careers that are available so they themselves can make an informed decision about their first step after high school. Will the Career Centre find me a job? We do everything we can to give students the tools to find their own jobs. That may mean assisting students with creating a resume and cover letter, doing practice job interviews and talking about job-search skills. Can I get High School credits for my part-time job or volunteer work? Yes, you can! You must see Mr. Buckie, Off Campus Teacher (St. Timothy and St. Francis) or Mr. Kennedy, Off Campus Teacher (St. Martin de Porres)
