FALL EDITION 2021-2022
SAINT FRANCIS Dear Families of Saint Francis High School
The school year is off to a great start, and we have an enrolment of 1780 students. This is a large increase over last year’s enrollment figure of 1490. We have many students who are new to grade 11 and 12 and we welcome all our new grade 10’s to the 2021-2022 school year. As such we have hired many new teachers to accommodate this increase. We wish to welcome; Mr. W. Delaney (Religion), Mr. C. Stambene (Social Studies), Mr. A. Vladimirov (Études sociales), Mr. T. Kavanagh (Science), Ms. E. Vandermeiden (Math, Diverse Learning), Ms. J. Geremia (Diverse Learning), Mr. C Thompson (Math), Mr. C. Senkow (Science, PE), Ms. L. O’Brien (Dance, English), Mrs. J. Fedun (ES2), Ms. A. Phillips (ES1), Mr. M. Greco (ES1), Mr. B. Lovasz (English), Mr. C. Chiasson (Math), Mr. M. Arsenault (English), Ms. M. Tomcala (Science), Ms. B. Bestianich (Math), and Ms. V. Quigley (Transitions). Several of our office staff who have served our community well for the past many years are moving on to new and exciting opportunities. We say farewell to Ms. M. MacVicar (Receptionist/Office Assistant), Mr. J. Olsen (Data Entry), Ms. B. Kovacs (Office Assistant) and Mr. D. Woima (Business Manager). We wish them all the very best. The opening address to students focused on the history and tradition of our school community. Students were reminded of the supports our school community provides to assist them to stay on track and establish the foundations for their success. We also focused on our faith theme of “Hope” and how our school’s Peace Prayer of Saint Francis promotes love, kindness, and the virtues of humility. We continue to encourage our students to engage in their school community by moving outside their areas of comfort and by embracing the leadership opportunities presented. Our fall sports began on the first day of classes and are now in full swing. At the time of writing our girls’ soccer team is currently ranked in 1st overall and they will be competing in the Div. 1 playoffs where we have advanced to the Semi Finals. Our Jr. Football team is currently in 3 places overall and with each game they are making great strides. Our Sr. Football team is tied with the Notre Dame Pride for first place. We are looking forward to playing N.D. next Friday on October 15th. It is truly upsetting that our students are not able to attend this game due to the COVID-19 restrictions that limit all our games to parents and siblings of the players. In Volleyball, our Jr. Girls and Jr. Boys teams are both in 2 nd place on the B pool side. Both teams share this 2nd place spot with two other schools. The Sr. Girls team is currently in 1 st place in the B pool and our Sr. Boys team is in the middle of the pack in 6th place on the B pool side and they should have a good chance of making the playoffs. Our Cross-Country team students are placed in tope 10 25, 50, the City and Provincial Championships ran Oct 6 and will run Oct 16 in Red Deer. Our Golf team gave a good fight and ended up in 5 th place. On behalf of all of us we wish our teams every success as they finish their seasons. The Saint Francis High School modernization project is soon ending. The remaining monies have been used to replace the east side windows, redo the south B and C connector and we are replacing over 360 doors. As well, the district has supported the school in redoing the Drama theatre with new carpet, paint, and seats. It is our hope that they can also repaint the Music room. We look forward to the Saint Francis school renovated blessing that will take place in April 2022. Finally, we look forward to our Gala event that will take place on December 1 st. This event celebrates the artistic gifts and talents of our students. More information regarding this event will be shared to our school community as it becomes available. Saint Francis is a community that is committed to learning excellence. We set high expectations for ourselves and our students. Our staff will deliver outstanding educational programming for your son or daughter to help them achieve their full potentials’. To do so, we require the assistance and feedback from all stakeholder groups. Parents are welcome to volunteer their time supporting our many programs and events. Please feel free to contact the school and let us know how we are doing. The Staff of Saint Francis
God bless you and may your families remain healthy and safe. Mark Berger

Welcome to all new and returning families to Saint Francis High School! Our 2021-2022 School Council is excited about the new school year. A great way to stay connected with all the happenings at the school is to attend one of the school council meetings. Our principal, Mr. Mark Berger, attends every council meeting and brings a wealth of information and news to share with the parents. Please consider joining us at our next meeting on Wednesday November 17, 2021 at 7:00 pm via Microsoft Teams. Simply RSVP to our school secretary, Mrs. Marisa Auvigne at marisa.auvigne@cssd.ab.ca and then a link will be sent to you via an email before the meeting. We look forward to meeting you!
2021-2022 School Council Meetings Wed., Sept. 22 Wed., Nov. 17 Wed., Feb. 23 Wed., Apr. 13 Wed., May 11
At our first meeting on September 22, 2021, we were able to fill the two vacant positions on our council executive: those of vice-chair and secretary. The nominees were elected by acclamation. All of our committee coordinator positions are filled as well. It is wonderful to have a complete, vibrant, and experienced council for an amazing year ahead! In a normal school year, there are many volunteer projects that parents can assist with at the school. During the pandemic however, these special events and projects will only happen if approved by the principal in coordination with the Calgary Catholic School District. We welcome parents to sign up on the volunteer database for these potential opportunities. By adding your name to the database, you will receive emails about volunteer opportunities at the school. We do not send out mass emails regarding volunteer requests; only those who have signed up will receive the notifications about volunteering. You are not committing to anything by signing up. Throughout the year, we may require volunteers for: Textbook Distribution, Browns Ball, Athletics, Fundraising, Christmas Hampers, Archives Project, Graduation Events, and the Staff Appreciation Lunch. If you are interested in signing up, please visit the following link: St. Francis Parent Volunteer Form. Please note that we do not roll over the volunteer names from one school year to the next; therefore, you do need to fill in the form annually. Our council has a few fundraisers planned for the upcoming year. We will have a Winter Plant Fundraiser where we will sell poinsettias, wreaths, and holiday planters. Then six months later, we will have our Spring Plant Fundraiser where we will sell beautiful, locally-grown plants. Both plant sales help raise money in support of school council initiatives, such as enhancements to our Learning Commons and the annual year-end luncheon to thank our wonderful staff at Saint Francis. Plants are a great way to encourage our friends and family to have beautiful plants to enjoy while supporting our school. Plant order forms will go out in November and April, respectively. We will also be hosting several Papa John’s Pizza Nights throughout the school year. When you order online from the Arbour Lake, Panorama, and Motel Village Stadium locations on these days, you will receive 25% off your regular-priced order and Papa John’s will donate 10% to Saint Francis. Just use the promo code STF25 at the start of your order. What a great excuse not to cook on these nights! Feel free to share the promo code with your friends and family. The dates are yet to be scheduled and parents will be notified once they are chosen. Another easy way to support the school is to buy from Cob’s Bread in Crowfoot. Cob’s donates 5% of every purchase made back to our school. When you make a purchase, just let them know you want the purchase credited to Saint Francis and that sale will be added to the school’s account. We look forward to a rewarding school year. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to reach out to us at stfrancis@schoolcouncil.cssd.ab.ca. More information about our school council can be found on the school website.

My name is Nicole Seneviratne and I am the school Chaplin. Our district faith theme this year comes from Paul’s letter to the Corinthians on Love – “… and now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.” (1 Corinthians 13:13) All of these are fundamental to our beliefs as Christians and this year the focus is on hope. Now more than ever, we need hope. We prepare our students for the future, yet sadly, many of them see no hope for a future. As educators we are called to help them see that there is hope, to give them a sense of the possibilities and the doors that are open to them. This is not easy, especially in the midst of the ongoing pandemic and other tragedies happening in the world today. Our faith in God tells us that hope is not mere wishful thinking. Christian hope is the reassurance that something that has not happened yet will indeed happen. Hope in the Biblical sense is expressed by the notion of promise, a promise that opens new possibilities for human life. It looks to the future, but is rooted in the relationship to God that speaks in the here and now. It calls us to be present and active in this world as we look forward to the hope of eternal life in Christ Jesus. Let us pray for Hope as we embark on this school year.
St. Francis great affinity towards nature was demonstrated through his treatment of animals and his song “Canticle of the Sun”. Our school colors represent him and his love of nature. Brown represents the tunic Franciscans wear which also demonstrates their commitment to protect the earth and nature. Orange represents the sun which St. Francis felt symbolized the Creator’s divine light and intensifies natural life. Students were asked to dress in our school colors for the Feast day of St. Francis. Many participated and it was fun to see such school spirit.
Student Council Welcome – Embrace a New Rhythm
Student Council would like to welcome all students, teachers, staff, and parents of our Saint Francis Community. We are so glad to be back in school. This year our welcoming theme is “Embrace a New Rhythm.” Embracing a new rhythm means being okay with adjusting to change, being dynamic, and leaving anything that weighs you down behind. As our grade 10 students start their high school journey, it is a particularly good time to integrate this theme into their lives. The start of high school means a lot of changes are coming or have already come. We encourage them to be okay with approaching new people and activities, as well as moving outside their comfort zones. Our grade 11 students are more comfortable at the school. While this is great, they should continue to grow by embracing a new rhythm and further developing their interests. We encourage them to work hard, be open minded and grow as leaders of the school. Our grade 12 students are leaders at the school and are preparing to set forth on a new adventure after high school. This year, we encourage them to embrace a new rhythm – to push themselves out of their comfort zones, to challenge themselves to accept change, to try new things, to be dynamic, and as the graduating Class of 2022 – to make a difference! Embrace being a Brown! As members of the Saint Francis Community, we invite everyone to get involved as much as possible. Our school features a plethora of interesting clubs and sports teams which are a great way for students to expand their horizons in terms of activities and people. Another great way to get involved is to join Student Council. We meet every Monday in room A204 at lunch. We are always working on a school event and would love to have you!
This year’s Student Council Executives are: President: David Girgis Vice Presidents: Luke Cyriac and Jeffrey Liang Treasurer: Kris Johnson Secretary: Shalom Okwuosah Activity Coordinators: Anastasia Iwasyk, May Liu, Opemipo Olojab, Camila Serrano and Anna-Mariya Zagirska, Our Teacher Advisors are Toni Filippetto, Kim Curry and Marco Filipetto. As we begin this new school year – be a great Browns fan by showing your School Spirit through participation, remembering to wear your mask and to follow socially distancing.

The cross-country team welcomes students of all running abilities. The season includes 4 meets involving over 30 Calgary-area schools and up to approximately 90 students per age-level race. In the first meet, St. Francis students placed in the top 50, top 25 and even top 10. There were also several personal best finishes. Our team is proud of all our members' dedication to active living and selfimprovement. City and Provincial Championships run October 6 at St. Mary’s University and October 16 in Red Deer, respectively. See you out on the trails!
Our Junior Girls Volleyball team is off to a great start with a 2-1 record. The team is made up of 14 wonderful girls who are eager to work on their fundamental and team skills. Every day we are seeing improvement in their game. It has been really great seeing the girls back on the court. Unfortunately due to Covid spectators are limited to parents only. Go Browns Go! Congratulations to the Senior Girls Volleyball team with their undefeated record of 3-0. The team is lead by Co- Captains Robyn and Fade. Although it’s been over a year since having competition, we are rapidly getting back into game form condition. Our next home game against William Aberhart will be an important match which could ultimately decide whether we finish first or second in our division. Our goal is getting to that City Championship game where we hope the outcome will be different from our 2019 appearance. Go Browns Go The Junior Boys Volleyball team continues to improve from game to game. It is a team of narrow margins, capturing a 3-2 win in four sets playing against Lord Beaverbrook and a 3-2 win in four sets against Lester B Pearson in the first two games of the season. Our third game against the All Saints Lords ended in a 1-3 loss with some tightly fought sets of 30-32 and 23-25. The boys continue to improve from game to game and practice to practice and will be facing Bishop Carroll and Bowness High next . After a year away, the Senior Boys are back and excited to be on the court. With some key leaders from the jr. team two years ago and the addition of some new talent, the Sr. Boys team has a record of 2-2. They are playing some exciting volleyball and keeping the crowd on the edge of their seats. We cannot wait to see what the rest of the season will bring. #gobrownsgo

THE BLANKET EXERCISE
Monday, September 27 – We made a video to kickstart the week: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuxBIlNO8-M Wednesday September 29 – We invited our school community to wear their Orange Shirts. As well, we hosted a Blanket Exercise for about 25 participants, teachers and students, about the emotional and honest history of Turtle Island. The participants were deeply moved and had a very different appreciation for history after the exercise. We look forward to more activities with the club including bringing in cultural ceremonies, and raising more awareness on Indigenous issues including Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. During the week, we also invited students and staff to tie orange ribbons on the fence outside facing Northmount Drive in response to this poem: I Lost My Talk
by Rita Joe I lost my talk The talk you took away. When I was a little girl At Shubenacadie school. You snatched it away: I speak like you I think like you I create like you The scrambled ballad, about my world. Two ways I talk Both ways I say, Your way is more powerful. DRAMA DEPARTMENT Rehearsals for the fall play have officially begun! Titled "The Village of Idiots" and set in 19th century Eastern Europe, the play follows along main character Yosef who comes across a village of innocent and lighthearted people who are, nonetheless, very stupid. Yosef thinks he is better than them but over time he discovers there is actually much he can learn from the Chelmniks. He learns his "Outsider" attitude can be much improved upon, so he adjusts his way of thinking and doing things. Hilarity ensues! Come join us on November 30th and December 2nd for our regular performances, as well as on December 1st for the Gala performance! In addition to the fall play, the Improv team is now up and running as well! Team members for the last couple of weeks have been doing several exercises that improve both their platform skills as well as their ability to establish a good positive scene. Actors have been taught the 5 key points of platform (that is- who they are, where they are, what they are doing, what their relationship is, and making sure to keep things positive), and will now be using these in upcoming improv games. There will be an improv show coming up, TBD. Nathan Smith
Dance is Back!!! Joining the dance program at St. Francis was the best and most rewarding decision I’ve made in high school! The dancers are all welcoming and encouraging, and they do a fantastic job at creating an environment free of judgement where it feels like we’re all at a party having the time of our lives on the dance floor. No matter your level of experience beforehand, you will learn new things and leave the program better than you started! I’ve thoroughly enjoyed learning new genres of dance and music, as well as the rich history of the different styles of dance. If you are interested in dancing at St. Francis there are many options. We perform at pep rallies, dance festivals, gala night (December 1) and at our big dance show at the end of the semester (December 13th and 14th). The show is a creative and unique way that us dancers can show off our talent and share our joy of dance with an audience. Stay tuned for announcements of upcoming auditions or have a chat with the dance teacher Ms. O’Brien if you have any questions. She will gladly welcome you and help you to reach your full potential as a dancer. Ms. O’Brien makes the dance program such a great experience because she truly wants the best for her students. Every day I look forward to her class where I can let go of any stress and just have fun. So if you would like to support the St. Francis dancers then join the program or come and watch our performances throughout the year, starting with the pep rally (performance date TBD)! September is always a busy month for Student Services and this year was no exception as we switched from quarter system back to semesters. Our online scheduling system allowed us to handle almost double the usual requests and resulted in many more students coming back to satisfying timetables. Students have been reminded to set up their MyPass accounts if they have not already done so. Alberta Education requires all students to have a myPass account to view and order transcripts and access diploma exam results. Once again, Students Services is offering twitter to students and parents. Our twitter feed is @SFGuidanceCCSD. Students and parents may also access post -secondary and scholarship information in their D2L course labelled “General Course Student Services” under content. Thank you to the U of C rep that presented to some of our students on September 28, 2021.

Work Experience Work Experience allows students who have a part time job to earn credits based on the number of hours they work. Hours spent volunteering and hours worked during summer may also be eligible for this program. Worksites are approved, students are evaluated, and a teacher supervises the students’ experience. Students involved in the program have the opportunity to: Earn high school credits (1 credit for every 25 hours worked, with a minimum 75 hours worked) Acquire the skills and work habits needed to succeed after high school Credits can be earned in the following courses: HCS 3000: Workplace Safety Systems (1 CTS credit) Work Experience 15, 25 and 35 (3 – 10 credits per course) Career Internship 10 (3 – 5 credits) Of these credits, a total of 21 (1 CTS and 20 Work Experience) credits can be used toward the 100 credits for a high school diploma. Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) Is a career in the Trades something you might want to explore? RAP may enable you to gain experience in a trade to see if it is a career possibility for you. These are paid, full time summer positions and enable a student to earn credits based on the hours worked. Applications are available on your D2L homepage under “District Academic Programs” and are due in April, however students are encouraged to submit them earlier. This is a competitive application process so students will need to include a cover letter, resume and a teacher recommendation. A valid driver’s license is highly recommended when applying to this program.
Pre-Employment Programs In partnership with SAIT students can pursue a Dual Credit Certificate in Welding or Carpentry. This program covers the first-year technical training in these trades and runs for a full year starting in September 2022. Students will attend classes at SAIT from 8:30–11:30am, Mon. to Thurs. Applications are available on your D2L homepage under “District Academic Programs” and are due in May. The Career Practitioner is available to assist students with the following: • Career Planning – What would you like to do after high school? • Self-Assessment – Interests, Skills, Values and Personality • Post-Secondary Exploration • Occupational Research • Job Search - Resumes, Cover Letters, and Interview Writing • Volunteer Opportunities • Off Campus and Summer Program support and assistance What is Career Planning? Career planning is a unique lifelong process for each person. Your Career Practitioner will work with you to learn more about how your interests, skills, values, and personality impact your choice of career direction. It is an active process that students begin in their Career and Life Management class and continues with meetings with your Career Practitioner and your Student Services counselor. You will be making career decisions throughout your life. Does the Career Centre offer Career Tests and Assessments? Any “career tests” are tools for students to learn more about themselves and potential careers that may be of interest to them. The “tests” are designed to provide career suggestions for exploration but there is no test that will tell a student what they should choose as a career. The goal is for the students to learn as much as they can about themselves and the careers that are available so they themselves can make an informed decision about their first step after high school. Will the Career Centre find me a job? We do everything we can to give students the tools to find their own jobs. That may mean assisting students with creating a resume and cover letter, doing practice job interviews, and talking about job-search skills. Can I get High School credits for my part-time job or volunteer work? Yes, you can!
