Dedication of the Patrick Butler Biology Lab Donated by Dorothy and John P. Butler ‘82

Two years ago, Phase III of SFP’s Modernization Program officially began with the complete dismantling, re-designing and re-construction of the science labs. The result is a thoroughly modernized array of classroom and lab facilities that are state-of-the-art by a variety of measures. These new facilities now mirror the high-calibre science program offered by Prep. On Sunday November 6, 2016, we dedicated our new Biology Lab (E 113) to the memory of Patrick Butler, devoted Prep parent who passed away on January 3, 2013. St. Francis Preparatory School A Message from the School President Dear Graduates and Friends of St. Francis Prep, As we engaged in our many activities and programs during the 2015-16 fiscal year, we took time to celebrate the commitment of our dedicated administrators, faculty and staff members, many of whom are Prep graduates who returned to teach and mentor a new generation of students in the Franciscan tradition. Their incredible efforts, assisted by your generous support, enable us to continue the outstanding academic and extracurricular offerings for more than 2500 students who come from all walks of life. Once again, every senior graduated this past June and nearly every one (99.1 % of a class of 608 seniors) is currently attending college—including many of the most prestigious schools in the country. As a group, they were offered more than $150 million in merit-based college scholarships (separate from any financial aid packages)! Other highlights from the 2015-16 school year include the awarding of Middle States Association credentials to our Art and Guidance Departments (the highest level of recognition for a high school program) AND the unveiling of several completely renovated and modernized areas for our award-winning Music Department together with many bright new updates to our lower level corridors and hallways. (See the pictures on pages 22 thru 27. I am sure you will be impressed.) This renovation work is part of Phase III of our Capital Improvement and Modernization Program which continues to be funded in large measure by The Campaign for St. Francis Prep: The Next 150. (See the campaign update on pages 20 and 21.) As you probably recall, early Phase III work resulted in our beautiful Science labs, while Phases I and II resulted in a totally upgraded infrastructure and wonderful Physical Fitness and Art Education Centers.

I remind you about this because it remains extremely important for you to know that your generous contributions, gifts and pledges continue to be put to very good use for the benefit of our current and future students at Prep. So thank you again and God bless you for your support! The simple fact is that we could never accomplish all the things we do nor could we provide all the resources we do for our students without your continued generosity. You allow us to maintain moderate tuition levels, fund special projects and programs, and offer financial assistance and scholarships to deserving students who otherwise may not be able to afford the excellent education we provide here. Within these pages you will find the complete listing of all 2015-16 fiscal year contributions, with donors (thru August 31) recognized alphabetically within each giving category and by graduating class. You will also see information about our named scholarship fund program, opportunities for planned giving, plus the upcoming event calendar. PLANNED GIVING SOCIET Y Brother Ralph Clifford served as Treasurer for 35 years prior to his untimely passing in the Fall of 2002. His fiscal policies helped keep St. Francis Prep on sound financial footing. The Prep honored Brother Ralph’s memory in several ways. The Prep’s Auditorium was named in his memory and a special “giving society” was established in his name for alumni, parents and friends who include St. Francis Prep in their estate plans. Members of this giving society are invited each year to the President’s Dinner and will be afforded permanent recognition as members of The Brother Ralph Clifford Society. St. Francis Preparatory School

Life Insurance & Retirement Plans If you own a life insurance policy that is no longer needed, it can be a perfect vehicle for a charitable gift! To receive a charitable deduction, name St. Francis Prep as both the owner and the beneficiary of the policy. If the policy has cash value, you can take a charitable deduction approximately equal to the cash value at the time of the gift. Trusts and Wills All of part of what remains after loved ones have been provided for can be put in trust or directed for the use of St. Francis Prep. Assets can also be put aside for a limited period of time and then returned to the donor.

Unit Trusts A Unit Trust has a fixed percentage rate of return on the initial principal value. Benefits include an income tax deduction, the avoidance of capital gains tax (when appreciated securities are used), as well as an estate tax reduction. St. Francis Prep requires a minimum gift of $25,000 to establish this. Charitable Gift Annuity This gifts allows the donor to receive benefits for his/her lifetime and to qualify for a charitable tax deduction. This form of support is attractive when one has highly appreciated assets. St. Francis Prep requires a minimum gift of $100,000 to establish this. A Charitable Remainder Trust This form of support transfers assets to a trustee, who then manages the trust and pays an income back to the donor for life or for a specific time period. When the trust terminates, the remainder passes to St. Francis Prep.

THE CAMPAIGN FOR ST. FRANCIS PREP The Next 150

The Capital Improvement & Modernization Program Ushers in a New Era at St. Francis Prep Cutting-edge technology. Totally redesigned, state-of-the-art music education classrooms and practice facilities. Energy efficient LED corridor lighting coupled with bold graphics. These are some of the stunning new improvements that have been made to the Prep’s facilities in recent months. It started with the creation of the Physical Education & Athletic Training Center and the new Art Education Center in 2011, followed by the renovated Science Labs and Classrooms in 2014-15. Now, the complete redesign and recreation of the facilities for our award winning Music Department is currently underway and will continue over the next several years as Phase III of our capital improvement and modernization program continues. This Music Education Center project will be completed in phases over the course of two years and the end result will be highly advanced learning, practice and performance spaces for our award-winning music students as well as a new dance studio and renovated student locker rooms. “Functionality, along with the latest technology and cutting edge design provide Prep students (and our faculty) with some of the most outstanding instructional facilities,” said Prep’s President, Bro. Leonard Conway. He added, “Your generous contributions and pledges are being put to very good use each and every day for the benefit of our students!” The Franciscan Brothers, the Prep’s Trustees and other leaders began laying the groundwork for these changes more than a decade ago to help insure a long, prosperous and productive future for the school. And, the Capital Campaign designed to help fund these improvements, The Campaign for St. Francis Prep: The Next 150, will continue through 2018, turning soon to the entire Prep community (alumni, parents, friends) to help achieve our goals. The SFP Music Program is outstanding—one of the best in New York State at the high school level—and the Music curriculum offers students an opportunity to broaden their cultural background and to prepare for college-level work. The program is designed for three types of students: (1) those who wish to fulfill their music requirement (2) those who have an interest in music and enjoy performing, and (3) those who expect to major in music or music education in college. The Music Department strives to ensure the education of the whole student through our vocation of Music. This is accomplished through community-centered learning environments and varied and enjoyable performance opportunities. These range from participating in countless school functions, to international tours and high-level performances for dignitaries such as Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI. Prep’s Music department offers eleven performing ensembles for academic credit. Courses are also available in Music Theory, History, Electronic Orchestration (Finale), and Technology (Logic). Prep also offers a free Music Lesson program for academic credit, as well as outreach opportunities in the broader community. Among the Music Department’s many achievements, the Chamber Orchestra earned a Gold Medal rating with the New York State Music Association. And in 2011 St. Francis Prep became the first-ever high school to receive a special Music Department accreditation by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools!

PRACTICE STUDIOS: How can a student be expected to practice the flute when the sound of the trumpet next door is blasting through the walls and leaking through the vents? Or how can a French horn player improve tone when the internal acoustics in the practice room are muddy or excessively bright? The solution: As a result of our Modernization Program at the Prep, the Music Department now features seven Wenger Sound Loc ÂŠ Modular Sound-Isolation booths with the most advanced technology for individual practice and instruction. In addition, the classrooms also have specially engineered Wenger Music Posture Chairs .

Bold graphics and murals remind us of our Franciscan tradition, our Faith based education as well as the pride of our rich Terrier school spirit.

Our school colors are rooted in our Franciscan history. The flag of Assisi, Italy —the birthplace of our founder —Saint Francis, features red and blue in equal measure. Likewise, in this recent phase of our ongoing modernization program, red and blue also provide a “sense of place.” The West Bottom corridor features red graphics, while the East Bottom corridor features blue graphics.

Our heartfelt thanks goes to all those who had the foresight to start these scholarship funds and to those whose generosity continues this wonderful legacy. St. Francis Prep welcomes the establishment of named, permanently endowed scholarship funds in memory or in honor of the named individual(s) or named family by providing an initial contribution of at least $10,000 and a long-term commitment to provide $100,000 or more. These funds may be established by generous individuals, families, graduating classes (i.e. the Class of 1999 Fund), athletic teams (by sport or year), club members (by club or year), etc. We hope to add many more scholarship funds in the years ahead (and help many more students) through outright gifts made by generous graduates and friends, through bequests-by-will, and through other planned giving methods.
