Dear Alumni and Friends,
I want to take this opportunity to recognize and offer my heartfelt thanks to all those who have contributed to the success of the 29th Annual St. Francis Prep Golf Classic. This event could not happen without the hard work and dedication of so many participants, staff members and volunteers. In the end though, each year we come together with our Franciscan spirit and pride to honor some wonderful individuals! And this year is no exception. My heartfelt gratitude and congratulations go to this year’s honorees:
Daniel Ryan ‘86 and Jimmy Lynch ‘99
Also, thank you to all of our golfers, dinner guests, major sponsors, journal advertisers, and hole and tee sponsors. This event was “sold out” within days of the initial announcement. And the commemorative journal is tremendous once again. This is a reflection of your devotion and generous commitment to the Prep. And our 2400 students are very thankful for your support!
Finally, I want to express my gratitude to all the members of the SFP Alumni Board, the Golf Classic Committee and the Office of Development and Alumni Relations. You work together to organize this event each year and I truly appreciate your efforts. Thank you!
Have a great day and a wonderful summer!

Jimmy Lynch ‘99
Long-time Basketball Coach & Math Department Faculty Member
James Lynch embodies the Franciscan spirit in the varied roles in his life: teacher, coach, father and friend. He’s been an active part of the Prep community for more than three decades. The SFP Alumni Golf Committee is delighted to honor him at this year’s event.
James Lynch grew up in Rego Park and attended SFP from 19961999. He has been associated with the Terrier Basketball Program for three decades. He played both baseball and basketball in his freshmen year. By his junior year he choose to dedicate himself solely to basketball and played under the leadership of the late, legendary Hall of Fame coach, Tim Leary ‘63. He was a standout player for the Terriers and was a great student.
After graduating from Prep, he went on to study at St. Francis College and graduated with a degree in business management. After a brief stint in the business world, Jimmy chose to pursue a career he was more passionate about--teaching! In 2003, he joined the faculty at Cathedral Preparatory Seminary High School where he taught for two years. The sport he played still held a special place in his heart and while
he was still teaching at Cathedral Prep, Jimmy was hired (in 2004) to coach the SFP Freshman team. He led the Terrier Freshmen team for five seasons and then rose up to lead the JV team for the next five seasons before joining Coach Leary’s staff on the Varsity team. It was there that Lynch and Leary developed a close bond.
“I learned from Coach Leary how to run a first-class program and how to do it with integrity and dignity,” Lynch said. “More important than that, he was a mentor for me and taught me how to be a man and how to raise a family.” Their mutual respect led Leary to handpick Lynch as his successor by the time he retired after the 2017 season.
The opportunity to carry on the great tradition of his mentor was truly a gift to the SFP basketball program and it was also considered a great honor for Lynch.
“Jimmy is an outstanding coach — he is passionate and hardworking and nobody is more prepared than Jimmy to coach.” said Prep’s Athletic Director, Sal Fischetti ‘83. Reflecting upon filling the shoes of the late Coach Tim Leary, Fischetti added, “I always felt that Coach Leary was the best game coach in the league. Jimmy is following Coach Leary in his ability to get the most out of his players everyday.” He went on to say, “And if I were to address the team before a game I would say get us to the Fourth Quarter and Coach Lynch will show you how to win.” In 2020, the Varsity Terriers captured the CHSAA Brooklyn Queens Championship against Xaverian for the first time since 1997.
Returning “home” to Teach
Mr. Lynch is now a well-regarded veteran teacher of Mathematics at St. Francis Preparatory School. In September 2006 (after two years of teaching at Cathedral
Prep) Jimmy returned “home” and joined the faculty at St. Francis Prep’s Math Department. Sr. Mary Ann Nappier, C.S.J. (his department Chair) said, “He is the true professional in every sense of the word. He is thoughtful, honest, fair and straight forward in his handling of professional concerns.” She added, “As Chairperson, I am blessed to have him as member of the mathematics department. James has the ability to work well with students of various ability levels. He is patient yet firm.” Reflecting on the selection of Jimmy Lynch as one of the 2023 Golf Classic honorees, Sr. Mary Ann said, “Honoring James Lynch highlights that a person who quietly goes about his job in an excellent manner, can receive the accolades he deserves.”
As a teacher and a coach, Jimmy has earned the respect of his students, his peers and the administration. Patrick

McLaughlin ‘73 (Prep’s Principal) said, “Jimmy is the model of a Teacher-Coach. His focus from his days coaching freshman basketball has always been one of player development and remains to be the focus on his present varsity team.” McLaughlin added, “He understands the mission of being a coach in the CHSAA, always keeping the “C” as a priority in his approach. He inspires his players to achieve excellence by unlocking each player’s potential to maximize their abilities.”
When Sr. Mary Ann announced that she would be retiring after more than 55 years, the administration selected Lynch to succeed her as the Math Department Chairperson.

tight-knit group of close friends. Jimmy is described as a loyal friend who cares very much about the people that are closest to him. Jon Pereira ‘99 said, “Jimmy is always the first to respond if you need anything and he’s always there.” Kevin Wagner ‘01 said, “We all know what a great teacher and coach he is, but he is an even better friend and a father. It has been incredible to see what he has done with the basketball program but it really isn’t surprising at all having known him for almost 30 years. He has always been the same guy and Prep is lucky to have him.”
St. Francis Prep is delighted to honor James “Jimmy” Lynch at the tonight’s Golf Classic!
Congratulations Jim and thanks for all that you do for SFP!
Daniel Ryan ‘86
Wall Street Veteran & SFP Hall of Famer
After college, Danny Ryan embarked upon a career in business. While working on Wall Street for more than 30 years, he got involved in a host of charitable causes. In the past decade he established a charitable organization of his own —“Unsung Siblings Foundation”—which benefits a variety of important community causes.
Daniel has served the Wall Street community for three decades in a variety of capacities including as a Governor of the NYSE for 20 years. As the Managing Director of E & J Securities, Inc. Daniel’s focus is on strategic initiatives for trading listed equities on the NYSE floor. He is also a partner and director of operations of Notorious Pink Wines, a French Wine company which is the fifth largest rose`company in the United States and growing.
He is the oldest of three children of the late Dorothea and Daniel Ryan. His siblings, Kimberly Ryan Levin and late brother, Christopher (who passed away in 2018) grew up in a quiet section of Whitestone, Queens. It was there that their parents instilled the importance of family. “We were blessed with a beautiful childhood; a safe home filled with so much love; parents who dedicated their lives to our wellbeing and happiness” Ryan said of his early years.
At St. Francis Prep he developed many close friendships with people who he considers his second family. These bonds remain today as they were on
graduation day in 1986. At least once a month they get together at a restaurant or in someone’s home. It is a tradition that they have honored for more than 25 years.
Danny (as his close friends refer to him) is the father of three amazing boys: Michael, Daniel and Jonathan. His middle son, Jonathan was diagnosed with Autism when he was two years old. At the time of his diagnosis there were very few resources dedicated to the study of Autism. “I began joining local charity boards to help others and learn as much as possible to help my son.” Danny said. And that’s when his drive to help others in need began. It’s estimated that over the past 20 years he has helped raised over $10 million for various charities.
Danny served on the National Board of National Alliance for Autism Research in 2000 until it merged with Autism Speaks in 2006. The Autism Speaks Walk is the world’s largest autism fundraising event dedicated to supporting the needs of people with autism and their families and he helped recruit many participants and sponsorships for the Walk.
Siblings have the potential to have a significant impact on one another’s development and well-being and are often our first friends and our best friends. Danny recognized how the siblings of a child with autism were heavily impacted and were not often celebrated and sometimes overlooked. He said, “I saw how much my boys, Michael, and Daniel took care of and assisted their brother, Jonny at such young ages. I was grateful and very inspired by that.” So in 2016, Ryan established the Unsung Siblings Foundation with the goal of helping special needs children and their siblings.
Helping Veterans
In 2018, Daniel’s brother, Christopher (age 47), a proud Army Veteran suddenly passed away. “Losing our brother changed our relationship” said Kimberly. “We became closer and understood what we had lost... something no one else could. Our dynamic as siblings changed because it was just us two now and losing Chris, truly showed us how precious life can be.” she said.
The Unsung Siblings Foundation board decided that the best way to honor Chris was to continue the work he did. Chris ran a charity he created— Clothes to Home— that focused on helping homeless Vets. Unsung Siblings expanded the foundation’s mission to help veterans and their families. Within a short time, they partnered with Paws of War, an organization that provides service dogs to Veterans. “Christopher’s love of dogs and his service made it such a seamless choice particularly after seeing the impact that these service dogs had on our brave men and women.” said Daniel.
“We wanted to do more after hearing a veteran say, ‘If it’s between me or my dog eating, I don’t mind skipping a meal’” Ryan said. That prompted the Unsung Siblings Foundation board to develop CHRIStmas Angels—a program which assists veterans who are financially struggling by providing them with gift cards and cash assistance. They also hold clothing and food drives to support various veterans causes and are in the process of partnering with more organizations
to help those who have truly sacrificed so much.
Two years after losing Chris, the Ryan family experienced another sudden loss when their mother, Dorothea passed away in the very early days of the Covid-19 Pandemic. “Once again we learned that with each other’s support and love we could get through anything.” In the midst of their family’s heartbreak and grief, they organized an effort to provide relief to overworked front-line medical workers by delivering restaurant meals to area hospitals. (It incidentally also provided much-needed assistance to many struggling restaurant owners and their staff during the lock-down period.)
Terrier Spirit
Danny’s enduring Terrier spirit has been evident in his work with the Friends of St. Francis Football Fund He and his classmate, Coach Rich Carroll ‘86 arranged for the football program’s 100th anniversary celebration to take place on the floor of the NYSE. Coach Carroll said, “Danny has been a true Friend of St Francis Prep Football
and a force for good for so many in our St. Francis Prep community. Without any hesitation, time and time again, Dan has stepped in to assist and facilitate educational opportunities.”
Coach Carroll went on to say, “He continually offers recognition to our players both with siblings of those with special needs and our entire football family. Through contributions, assistance and actively brainstorming on so many of our football events and functions— he enhances the SFP Football family culture and everyone’s SFP Football experience.”
In 2016, Danny was inducted into the St. Francis Preparatory School Hall of Fame for his contributions to the community--one of his proudest accomplishments!
St. Francis Prep is delighted to honor Danny at the tonight’s Golf Classic! Congratulations and thanks for all that you do for SFP!
