The St. Francis Prep Annual Report is our salute to the loyal alumni, parents, students, faculty, staff and friends whose generosity and commitment to our mission have helped the Prep in many wonderful ways this past year.

If you supported Prep’s Annual Fund, Capital Campaign, the #TerrierSTAR fund, our scholarship fund program or any of the other events, reunions, or fundraising activities between September 1, 2021 and August 31, 2022, your name should be listed in this report. Please let us know and accept our apology if an error or omission is present. Thank you for your generosity.

A Message from the President

Dear Graduates and Friends of St.

Francis Prep, Greetings from St. Francis Prep! Let me start by extending my best wishes to you and your family for a very Happy, Healthy 2023!

In fact, our most recent fundraising efforts have focused on the establishment of new, permanent scholarship and financial assistance funds that will help our students in perpetuity. (See pages 50-55 for the highlights.)

The fact remains that we could never accomplish all the things we do nor could we provide all the great resources for our students without your continued support.

Our fiscal year ending August 31, 2022 was a very gratifying. After all the uncertainty brought about by the pandemic, we were very glad to be able to experience a full school-year of normal, inclassroom teaching and learning.

Throughout it all, our enrollment has remained steady, with about 2400 students with us each day here at 6100 Francis Lewis Boulevard. And every one of our seniors graduated this past June, with 97% of them currently enrolled in college—including many of the most prestigious schools in the country. As a group, they were offered over $160 million in merit-based college scholarships—not including any other financial assistance packages they may have received!

This situation continues to be affected in a very positive way by YOUR generosity which enables me to assist so many of our students and their families who have struggled financially thru the pandemic— and, in many cases, continue to face financial challenges even today.

But my pledge remains: “No deserving student will ever be denied a St. Francis Prep education due to financial hardship.” Thanks to YOU we have always found a way to keep these students in our care and under our guidance here at the Prep.

So I continue to tell everyone that your participation in our important work pays huge dividends, as evidenced by the tremendous accomplishments of our students AND the beautiful new and updated facilities that reflect these accomplishments.

Speaking of new facilities, we have now completed the west-side renovation and modernization which includes fantastic spaces for our award-winning music program, a brand-new student/athletic locker room facility and new Phys Ed staff offices. We have also seen the dedication of our beautifully renovated chapel. These facilities have been put to extremely good use for a year or more now.

The next and final phase will involve east side renovations that will essentially be a reflection of the west side work.

All-in-all, over $35 million in renovation and new construction work has been done since we started this program “way back when,” and we currently carry less than $2 million in outstanding debt!

I continue to remind you of this because I believe it’s very important for you to know that your generous contributions, gifts and pledges are always being put to very good use for the benefit of Prep’s current and future students.

And without your involvement in our scholarship and financial assistance efforts we definitely would not have the tremendous student body we have here today, wonderful young men and women who come from all walks of life and clamor for the outstanding Catholic, Franciscan-based education we provide for them.

So thank you very much once again for everything you do for St. Francis Prep. You are always welcome back home. I hope to see you soon—whether it be here at the school (more and more of our events are being held in our beautiful new facilities) or at one of our off-site events like our upcoming Florida gathering.

Our 2021-22 Annual Report continues with the theme of the most recent GRAD NEWS: How St. Francis Prep’s benefactors have created opportunities and have the power to change the lives of our students. For every student who benefits from your generosity, there are many compelling and interesting stories behind the inspiration to give back to St. Francis Prep!

Whether it’s an annual donation to St. Francis Prep in memory of someone who passed or endowing a scholarship to honor a Franciscan Brother, a family member, a teacher or a coach who provided them with an opportunity, a second chance or simply words of encouragement, each gift has its own special meaning. Within these pages are listed the many benefactors who give for their very own reasons. Many of them are known only to the giver. Yet we’re sure that each one of our donors would attest that what they received from their experience at St. Francis Prep is often greater than they ever could give back. Many of the stories behind our donor’s motivation for their giving are inspirational.

The following is just one example of the great impact St. Francis Prep has on the wider Prep community:

Dear Brother Robert,

Thank you for your nice gesture of the Mass card for the passing of my father. I graduated in 1990 and my dad was always so appreciative of the education I received there and the assistance I received both financially and spiritually after the passing of my mother in between 10th and 11th grade.

My father did not have a lot, but in his Will he stated that when I sell his home I should give Prep $5,000.

I realize that in the context of your overall operating budget this is not a lot, but know that he did appreciate everything.

Stories of Giving

Louis E. Marino, Sr. (Class of 1952) started his copier business in 1968 from the family garage in California with an Opel station wagon he bought for $500. He knocked on the doors of businesses in San Fernando Valley and gradually built up a very successful business. St. Francis Prep remained close to his heart because of the encouragement of one of his Franciscan mentors.

He wrote, “One my fondest memories took place at a SFP Concert at Brooklyn Academy of Music. As the orchestra played the beautiful “Ballet of the Egyptians” with me on bass, I glanced out into the audience and saw my dad who loved classical music with tears of pride streaming down his face. God Bless Brother Benignus for not allowing me to make a terrible mistake and miss a moment that I will cherish forever.”

Lou passed away in 2018 but starting with the Prep’s 150th anniversary celebration in 2008, Lou enthusiastically and generously supported the SFP Capital Campaign with a major gift that enables the Prep to dedicate The Lucille and Louis E. Marino ‘52 Orchestra Room at SFP.

The late Vincent Toscano (Class of 1953) was a successful chemist, entrepreneur and businessman. With the support of his wonderful wife, Paulette and their four sons, he built a successful business in the pharmaceutical, flavor and confectionery industry. They did it by providing quality products and exceptional customer service. He understood that the concept of “service” extended far beyond business. With his good fortune the Toscanos helped many deserving students who would otherwise have not been able to afford a Prep education.

He often said, “I shovel out and God shovels in — but God’s shovel is always bigger.”

(He was quoting R. G. LeTourneau, a Christian businessman.) The Paulette and Vincent Toscano ‘53 Scholarship Fund was established to provide scholarships to those students who are in need and are academically gifted. Over the years the it has benefited dozens of students and the scholarship fund principal currently stands in excess of $700,000.

Michael F. Lynch ‘86 (Class of 1986) was one of the 343 FDNY personnel lost on 9/11 while responding to the attacks on the World Trade Center. He was the youngest among his siblings (Kathleen, Bernadette, Mary, Rory, Barbara ‘79, Danny and Maureen†) and yet he stood at a towering 6 feet 5 inches thus earning the nickname, “Big Mike.” Coincidentally, his middle name is “Francis” and true to our patron saint, he truly was a loving, gentle giant of a man.

In the decade following 9/11, the Lynch family held The Annual “Big Mike” Memorial Golf Outing.” With the support of their parents (Daniel ‘47 and Catherine) and the blessings of his widow, Denise, and their children Michael ‘16 and Jack ‘19) they worked tirelessly to raise funds to provide scholarships for incoming Prep students. The Michael Lynch ‘86 Memorial Scholarship Fund at SFP now serves as both a tribute of one of FDNY’s Bravest while also assisting many deserving students/families with the cost of their tuition.

Julie Chen Moonves (Class of 1987), the well-known CBS TV personality (“The Talk,” “Big Brother”), established a scholarship fund that assists girls who may otherwise find it difficult financially to attend the Prep. The Julie Chen ‘87 Scholarship Fund was established several years ago with an initial donation of $250,000 and has grown and helped many deserving students. However Julie’s benevolence did not end there.

In early 2020, when the global pandemic struck and families were affected by the economic impact of the shut-down, Julie reached out to Prep’s President to offer her generous support once again. In a video message sent to all alumni and parents she offered: “Some Prep families can no longer afford to send their kids to our school this Fall....if you are in the position fortunate enough to donate to help, I will match every single donation made to the Terrier STAR Fund.” The response was overwhelmingly positive and we credit her for driving participation in the fund to record levels. All told, TerrierSTAR (Student Tuition Assistance & Relief) raised over $1.7 million and Prep’s President, Bro. Leonard, was able to relieve the burden of tuition for hundreds of students and families.

Growth in Endowed Scholarship Funds at St. Francis Prep

(2006-2022)

Our dedicated administration, faculty and staff ensure that our students get the best education and opportunities possible. And we are able to provide such an outstanding education through the generous support of alumni who have expressed gratitude for their own experiences at St. Francis Prep. That comes in two forms. First is regular annual giving which supports the Prep’s day-to-day operations. Another significant source of support has been the establishment of endowed (and “named”) scholarships.

Since the pandemic, additional efforts have been made to increase the number and amount of campaign gifts and pledges that would provide for an enhancement of St. Francis Prep’s Endowment and Scholarship Fund Program, thereby allowing the school to offer additional tuition assistance and sponsorship opportunities to deserving students.

The chart on the right illustrates the success of these efforts over the years.

The chart above illustrates a greater than 500% increase in endowed/named scholarship funds that will benefit students/families at St. Francis Prep. Scholarships create and preserve educational opportunities for deserving students. They serve as both a gateway and, on occasion, a “safety net” for families who find themselves in difficult financial situations. The global pandemic that began in 2020 taught us how fast things can change within families, small businesses, and in our entire economy. Our hope is that through our scholarship program we are able to provide opportunities for families whose lives change for one reason or another. And with the ongoing steadfast support of the Prep community, we will continue to succeed in this endeavor.

St. Francis Prep Alumni come back and give back because of the great experiences they have had and the solid education they received. This is a tribute to Religious and Lay men and women who devoted their lives to Franciscan education.

Your participation remains vital to our ability to continue our Franciscan mission and also help us to become eligible for foundation grants.

Schools that achieve high percentages in alumni giving participation, in general, receive more funding opportunities than those with lower participation levels. Why? Because evidence of strong alumni support is an indication of a school’s success in fulfilling its mission and helps the school qualify for outside support.

Every five years alumni call upon their classmates to make a generous gift in honor of their special reunion anniversary. Many alumni who have regularly supported the Prep over the years increase their annual gift on the special anniversary of their graduation because they know it’s important for one generation to support the next.

THE BROTHER RALPH CLIFFORD, O.S.F. PLANNED GIVING SOCIETY

Brother Ralph Clifford served as Treasurer for 35 years prior to his untimely passing in the Fall of 2002. His fiscal policies helped keep St. Francis Prep on sound financial footing. The Prep honored Brother Ralph’s memory in several ways. The Prep’s Auditorium was named in his memory and a special “giving society” was established in his name for alumni, parents and friends who include St. Francis Prep in their estate plans. Members of this giving society are invited each year to the President’s Dinner and will be afforded permanent recognition as members of The Brother Ralph Clifford Society. All estate gifts are unrestricted unless otherwise designated by the donor.

Bequests

This is a gift made by a provision in one’s will naming St. Francis Prep as a beneficiary. This can help reduce estate taxes.

Life Insurance & Retirement Plans

If you own a life insurance policy that is no longer needed, it can be a perfect vehicle for a charitable gift! To receive a charitable deduction, name St. Francis Prep as both the owner and the beneficiary of the policy. If the policy has cash value, you can take a charitable deduction approximately equal to the cash value at the time of the gift.

Remembering the Prep; Establishing a Legacy

A planned gift has the potential to provide a meaningful gift to Prep along with membership in the School’s Bro. Ralph Clifford, O.S.F. Planned Giving Society, which honors all those who have made a bequest or other planned gift in support of St. Francis Prep.

The following are a few benefits of Planned Gifts:

• Provide lifetime income for you and, if you wish, another beneficiary

• Give you a substantial federal income-tax charitable deduction

• Enable you to turn low-yielding assets into a higher income stream

• Reduce or eliminate taxes on capital gains

• Eliminate or reduce federal estate taxes

Trusts and Wills

All or part of what remains after loved ones have been provided for can be put in trust or directed for the use of St. Francis Prep. Assets can be put aside also for a limited period of time and then returned to the donor.

Unit Trusts

A Unit Trust has a fixed percentage rate of return on the initial principal value. Benefits include an income tax deduction, the avoidance of capital gains tax (when appreciated securities are used), as well as an estate tax reduction. St. Francis Prep requires a minimum gift of $25,000 to establish this.

Charitable Gift Annuity

This gift allows the donor to receive benefits for his/her lifetime and to qualify for charitable tax deduction. This form of support is attractive when one has highly appreciated assets. St. Francis Prep requires a minimum gift of $100,000 to establish this.

A Charitable Remainder Trust

This form of support transfers assets to a trustee, who then manages the trust and pays an income back to the donor for life or for a specific time period. When the trust terminates, the remainder passes to St. Francis Prep.

Motivated by our Gospel call and Francis’ example, Campus Ministry animates and nurtures the faith life of the school community through programs that allow students to develop their ministerial and leadership skills. St. Francis Prep SCHOLARSHIP FUND REPORT

For the Fiscal Year September 1, 2021- August 31, 2022

The cumulative total of all the funds in our Named Scholarship Program is approximately $7,000,000 (as of fiscal year ending August 31, 2022). This represents an increase of about $2 million in just the past two years--since the pandemic year and the creation of TerrierSTAR (Student Tuition Assistance & Relief) which was a major success story as well as the impetus for the establishment of many new scholarship funds and the increase in support for previously established funds. This also signifies the importance and tremendous value placed upon our scholarship and financial assistance efforts by our wonderful benefactors, namely our generous alumni, parents and friends.

Scholarship Funds with $100,000 or more in assets have been designated as “Permanently Endowed Scholarship Funds” and are highlighted throughout the following pages. Scholarship Funds with balances of $25,000-$99,999 are presumed to be building toward permanently endowed status and are also listed here.

Our heartfelt thanks to those who have started these funds and whose generosity continues this legacy. St. Francis Prep welcomes the establishment of named, permanently endowed scholarship funds in memory or in honor of the individual(s) or family named--by providing an initial contribution of at least $10,000 and a long-term commitment of $100,000 or more. These funds may be established by generous individuals, families, graduating classes (i.e. the 25th Anniversary Class of 1998 Fund), athletic teams (by sport or year), club members (by club or year), etc.

We hope to add many more scholarship funds in the years ahead through:

THE MIKE ABRUZZO & RUTH SPEER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Mike Abruzzo was the Dean of Men and Ruth Speer was the Dean of Women at St. Francis Prep for many years. The scholarship fund established in their memories provides for a financial award to a deserving student at Prep each year.

The Dr. Phillip F. Acevedo ‘06 Memorial Scholarship Fund at St. Francis Prep will be a permanently endowed fund by way of charitable, tax-deductible contributions that currently total over $50,000 and will eventually total at least $100,000--with the annual investment income used to make the scholarship award(s) each year. The award(s) will be presented each year on April 11 (Philip’s birthday) to a deserving St. Francis Prep student (or students) who exhibits an interest in science and medicine.

THE ELIZABETH G. ’80 & ROBERT J. ADAMS, JR. ’80 SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Elizabeth G. ’80 and Robert J. Adams, Jr. ’80 Scholarship Fund at St. Francis Prep will provide tuition assistance in a formal way each year for those deserving students who are facing financial hardship. This fund has been established through Lisa and Bob’s generosity and will be managed as a permanently endowed scholarship fund whose annual investment income will be utilized for this much needed assistance given to those students who otherwise may not be able to afford a St. Francis Prep education.

PHILLIP F. ACEVEDO ‘06 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

THE DANNY APICELLA ‘00 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Daniel Thomas Apicella, Class of 2000, was a standout basketball player through his years at Prep. Accomplishments Dan had on the basketball court were eclipsed by the high level of character Dan displayed in all aspects of his life. His generosity and giving nature embodied the Franciscan spirit, so it came as no surprise to those who knew him when Dan chose to become an EMT. To keep Dan’s generous spirit alive classmates, friends and family have established this special scholarship fund in his honor.

THE PETER CALLAHAN & CLASS OF 1959/1960 SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Peter Callahan grew up in Astoria, Queens and attended St. Francis Prep in Brooklyn, graduating in 1959. He went on to St. Francis College, graduated from there in 1963 and became an extraordinarily successful businessman. He has never forgotten his roots and remains St. Francis Prep’s most generous benefactor, having helped fund a number of important projects and programs over the years, including the Coach Vince O’Connor Physical Education and Athletic Training Center. This permanently endowed scholarship fund honors the wonderful 186 North 6th Street, Williamsburg, Brooklyn classes of 1959 and 1960 and will assist deserving Prep students and their families in perpetuity.

THE PETER CORRITORI ‘59 STEM SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Peter M. Corritori ‘59 STEM Student Scholarship Fund at St. Francis Prep will be a permanently endowed scholarship fund whose annual investment income will provide one or more deserving incoming SENIOR student(s) with financial assistance to help defray the cost of their final year’s tuition at the Prep. The selected student(s) will be in good standing and will have demonstrated a keen interest in science, technology, engineering and /or mathematics (STEM) and will be looking to pursue one or more of these areas of study in college--following in the footsteps of Peter M. Corritori ‘59, long-time and very successful Chemical Engineer whose important work literally took him around the world over many years. The student(s) will also have demonstrated financial need as determined by the school’s President and Administration.

The Joseph L. Barbarino ’62 Memorial Scholarship Fund at St. Francis Prep was established through a very generous gift from Joe’s wife, Diane Barbarino, following her husband’s passing in 2021. At the time, Diane told us, “As you may know, my late husband, Joseph L. Barbarino, St. Francis Prep Class of 1962, was devoted to his high school and to the wonderful Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn who taught him at St. Mary Star of the Sea, St. Francis Prep and St. Francis College.” This fund has been established in Joe’s memory and will be managed as a permanently endowed scholarship fund that will assist deserving students and their families in perpetuity.

THE MICHAEL BRENNAN ‘91 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

This fund was established in memory of one of Prep’s 9-11 heroes, Michael Brennan FDNY, Class of 1991, who was working with Engine Co. 54, Ladder Co. 4, Battalion 9 when he responded to the call that fateful day. “Mikey B” played football at the Prep, and he was an avid snowboarder and surfer who lived in Woodside. His family, especially his older brother Brian Brennan ‘87 and his mother Eileen Walsh, along with classmates and friends, have supported this fund since its inception.

Julie Chen, St. Francis Prep Class of 1987, made a very generous donation of $250,000 to establish a permanent scholarship fund that will assist deserving girls who may otherwise find it difficult financially to attend the Prep. The Julie Chen ’87 Scholarship Fund at St. Francis Prep will be a permanent fund whose annual income will provide for grants to be made each year.

Established through the generosity of Donald P. Devane, Class of 1961 and his family, the fund has been established in memory of Don’s brother Timothy (Class of 1957) who passed away in 2007. This scholarship will strive to assist deserving St. Francis Prep students in perpetuity.

THE CORBISIERO FAMILY (ANTHONY ‘78) SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Established through the generosity of Anthony Corbisiero ’78 and his family (with matching gifts provided by Anthony’s former employer, the Soros Foundation), this scholarship fund provides assistance to many deserving St. Francis Prep students in perpetuity.

THE GEORGE DILLMAN ‘00

George Dillman ‘00, an employee of Con Edison, died in an explosion as he was carrying out routine electrical maintenance work in a manhole in 2008. He was 26 years old. His colleagues at Con Ed, along with Dillman family members and friends organized a golf outing in his memory. Each year, the proceeds of the golf outing as well as other donations received throughout the year are directed into the building of the George Dillman ‘00 Memorial Scholarship Fund at St. Francis Prep.

THE FRANCISCAN BROTHERS CLIFFORD, CONWAY AND SMITH SCHOLARSHIP FUND

This fund was established by Michael Doherty ’77 in memory of his brother, Marty, who was tragically killed in 1980. Marty played football and rugby as a student at Prep and graduated in 1976. His brother, Michael, who lives in Texas, together with other family members, classmates and friends, continue to honor Marty’s memory through this scholarship fund.

Established through the generosity of SFP trustee, Michael Henning ’57, this fund honors and recognizes the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn for the tremendous influence they had on Mike’s life, most notably the late Brother Ralph Clifford, the Prep’s long-time treasurer; the late Brother Robert Smith, long-standing trustee and fellow SFP Hall of Famer; and Brother Leonard Conway, the Prep’s President.

THE DANIEL J. FINNEGAN ‘80 SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Daniel J. Finnegan ‘80 Scholarship Fund at St. Francis Prep was established to assist those deserving students whose family’s financial situation might present an obstacle to enrollment at the Prep. Preference will be given (but not limited to) Catholic students who are first-generation Americans. Mr. Finnegan is a first-generation American himself and a very successful businessman whose parents were both born in Ireland and worked hard to give their kids a great education. He chose to “give back” to the Prep and establish this scholarship fund (in his words): “To help children coming to this great country achieve the American dream through education.”

THE FIRST RESPONDERS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The First Responders Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established at St. Francis Prep through the generosity of Christopher J. Greene and Teresa Downing-Greene ‘81. The purpose of this scholarship fund will be to ease the burden of tuition each year for a deserving senior student. Preference will be given (but not limited to) children of Police, Fire or Emergency Medical personnel.

THE FRIENDS OF SFP FOOTBALL FUND

The fund’s mission is to afford the opportunity for selected student athletes to attain a Catholic high school education at SFP. Through the generous support of loyal alumni and friends, The Friends of St. Francis Football Fund will help defray tuition costs and represent a real savings for young student athletes and their families. In addition, it will help support SFP to continue on its mission as a leading Catholic High School in the Franciscan tradition and keep the SFP Football program the greatest high school football program in the Metropolitan area. Awards will be made each year to deserving incoming freshmen students who will then be eligible to have the award renewed for their sophomore, junior and senior years as long as they remain in good standing at the school.

THE VINCENT GIAMMONA ’79 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Vincent Giammona was a very high-spirited and well-liked student who participated in the Track program while at Prep. In 2001, he was looking forward to celebrating his 40th birthday by running his first NYC marathon, but he was killed on September 11th along with 343 of his FDNY colleagues in the greatest rescue effort in the history of the Department. He was posthumously promoted to Fire Captain. The recipient of this scholarship award should be a current member of the SFP Track & Field Team. Preference may be given to sons or daughters of Firefighters, Police Officers and/ or Military personnel.

THE WALTER & MARY HENNING MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Established through the generosity of SFP trustee, Michael Henning, Class of 1957, this fund honors the memory of his parents, Walter and Mary, who raised six boys in Queens Village, two of whom (Mike and Dan ’60) attended St. Francis Prep on North 6th Street in Brooklyn.

THE PAUL M. JOURCIN ‘65 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Paul Jourcin was born in Elmhurst, Queens and graduated from Saint Francis Prep (Brooklyn) in 1965. That fall he enrolled at Assumption College in Worcester, MA to study French. He graduated in 1969 and joined the faculty of Saint John’s High School in Shrewsbury, MA. He taught there for 41 years and was loved by his students and colleagues. He “retired” in 2010 but went on to a second career as an Admissions Officer and Assistant Principal at Venerini Academy in Worcester until his full retirement in 2019. Unfortunately, Paul passed away a year later at the age of 72. But he never forgot his roots and planned for extraordinary gifts to be made to St. Francis Prep upon his passing. One of these gifts is a $300,000 bequest that will be utilized to establish this permanently endowed scholarship fund in Paul’s memory to assist deserving students and families in need.

THE HUGH & MARGARET KELLY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Established through a generous gift from the estate of Margaret Kelly (mother of Edward M. Kelly, SFP Class of 1959) which was then “matched” by Ed Kelly ‘59 and his wife Kathleen in conjunction with the 55th Anniversary of the Class of 1959, this scholarship award (full or partial) will be offered each year to Prep students whose parents are members of either the NYPD or the FDNY OR are United States Veterans of Foreign Wars. In any given year an award may also go to heirs or descendants of Hugh and Margaret Kelly.

THE THOMAS R. KELLY ’80 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

This fund was established in memory of one of the Prep’s 9-11 heroes, Thomas R. Kelly, Class of 1980, who had a great sense of humor and enjoyed making everyone laugh. He was assigned to FDNY’s Ladder Co. 105 and was last seen alive in the lobby of the South Tower. The scholarship fund provides a financial award each year to a deserving Prep student.

THE MICHAEL F. LYNCH ’86 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

“Big Mike” as he was fondly known was last seen rescuing people from an elevator in the South Tower of the World Trade Center after the attacks on September 11, 2001. Michael and his seven siblings were raised by his parents, the late Catherine and Danny ‘47 in Flushing. Mike played basketball and made many friends at Prep. He earned a degree from SUNY Albany and went on to join the FDNY (Engine 54, Ladder 4,Battalion 9). Big Mike loved sports, the fire department and SFP but was truly devoted to his wife, Denise, and two sons, Michael and Jack. Established by his brother and sisters through the generous support of his extended family and friends, this scholarship fund is designed to keep Michael’s memory alive in the Franciscan traditions by enabling deserving students to attend his beloved alma mater.

THE BRO. ROBERT KENT, O.S.F SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Bro. Robert Kent was first assigned to SFP in 1968 teaching math and social studies. As baseball coach for over 50 years, hundreds of young men have learned about baseball, and most importantly, about life. Br. Rob also spent many years coaching basketball at the Prep. He helped provide his students and athletes with a top-notch education along with valuable lessons they could use both on and off the baseball field or basketball court. After serving as Athletic Director for many years, Br. Rob assumed the position of Alumni Director, and he remains in that important role today while continuing to oversee the baseball program at Prep.

THE BERNICE & JAMES E. McHUGH H’92 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

This fund is established in memory of the long-time track coach at Prep, Jim McHugh, and his wife, Bernice (may they rest in peace). Track alumni and members of the Class of 1957 came together in 2007 under the leadership of Ed Kennedy ’57 and Dan Corry ’58 to raise the money from classmates and track teammates to initiate this fund, and they continue to oversee the annual selection of each scholarship recipient (a senior track athlete in good academic standing who may have financial need) as well as ongoing fund-raising efforts.

THE TIM LEARY ‘63 & JANE MODRY H’00 MEMORIAL FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FUND

The Tim Leary ’63 and Jane Modry H’00 Memorial Financial Assistance Program will support St. Francis Prep in its mission as an outstanding Catholic high school in the Franciscan tradition. Tuition assistance awards will be made each year to deserving incoming freshmen and transfer students who have been accepted at the school, have registered and applied for financial assistance. These awards may be renewed for the students’ sophomore, junior and senior years at Prep as long as they remain in good academic and disciplinary standing at the school.

THE BRIAN MURPHY ‘83 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

This fund honors the memory of Brian Murphy ‘83, who played football at the Prep and then at Brown University before embarking on a legal career. He succumbed to a brain aneurysm in 1997, and football alumni have honored his memory by establishing this scholarship fund at St. Francis Prep.

THE LOSTRITTO FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Lostritto Family Scholarship Fund (Joanne and Joseph ‘79), established in memory of Royce A. Mulholland ’79, will support St. Francis Prep and will provide tuition assistance in a formal way each year for those deserving students who are facing financial hardship. This fund has been established and will be managed as a permanently endowed scholarship fund whose annual investment income will assist those students and families who otherwise may not be able to afford a St. Francis Prep education.

THE JOHN “ZEEK” MARCHASSALLA ‘79 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

John “Zeek” Marchassalla was the captain of the SFP 1978 CHSFL City Division Championship football team. He was named the head coach of the JV team in 1981 and coached what went on to become, arguably, one of the best teams to ever play at the Prep. John was an extraordinary individual who was loved and admired by many. After his untimely passing, legions of Prep alumni rallied to establish this scholarship fund in his memory.

Port Authority Police Officer Alfonse J. Niedermeyer, was a genuine hero even before the heroic rescue efforts at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. In 1992, he received a special citation for rescuing passengers from a jet that skidded off a runway at LaGuardia Airport. Initial funding for this permanent scholarship fund came through the generosity of Al’s wife, Nancy, and ongoing support from family members, classmates and friends insure that the fund can provide financial assistance to deserving students at the Prep in perpetuity.

THE ALFONSE J. NIEDERMEYER ’79 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

THE MARY & VINCENT O’CONNOR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Mary and Vincent O’Connor Scholarship honors the memory of these two “giants” and is presented each year to one or more Prep football student athletes who demonstrate strong character and above average academic performance, and whose continued progress would be enhanced by the financial assistance provided by this award as determined by the football program’s coaches, moderator, and the SFP President.

THE ALBERT MAXWELL ROBB

THE MARK TEOFILO/JOHN MCGINLEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Established in 2009 through a bequest-by-will left by the late J.B. Robb who stated, “The (Franciscan) Brothers are to establish a Fine Arts Scholarship, the income from which is to be given annually to a graduating high school senior (to assist with his/her final year tuition) whose talents lie in the specific areas of the (Arts). The scholarship was established in honor of the donor’s brother.

Alumni, faculty, staff, family members and friends have raised funds to establish a scholarship memorializing our friends and colleagues, Mark Teofilo H’12 and John McGinley H’82. Between them, they served 62 years on the faculty of St. Francis Prep.

THE

This fund honors the memory of James Prendergast, SFP Class of 1979, who battled and finally succumbed to cancer at a young age. He and his four siblings all attended the Prep, and the Prendergast family, together with friends and classmates, provide ongoing support for this scholarship fund.

THE THOMAS SHEEHAN ‘55

Tom Sheehan ‘55 was a track star at the Prep in the 1950’s and this fund was started by his classmates as a memorial to this fine man. The fund is managed by investment advisor and Tom’s 1955 classmate at Prep, Jack Ward, and it provides for full or partial scholarships for deserving two-sport student athletes at Prep each year.

THE DANIEL PUJDAK ‘01 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

FDNY Firefighter Daniel Pujdak died while battling a blaze in 2007. Danny was a spirited person who always sought to help others. The love he showed was evident in the response to his sudden and tragic loss. Thousands of individuals including his FDNY colleagues, SFP classmates and those who came to know Danny only through his story in the media, responded with abundant kindness and generosity. This scholarship will continue to help future generations of students at SFP in Danny’s memory!

In 2001 FDNY Captain Timothy Stackpole made a triumphant return to the job he loved after a miraculous recovery from critical burns he had sustained after falling waist deep in fire in June 1998. On September 11th, he had just finished duty, but with the first news of the calamity he rushed to the WTC. His remains were uncovered the next day and he was laid to rest on September 24. He loved, laughed and lifted up all who knew him. SFP is proud to sponsor this scholarship fund that will bear his name in perpetuity.

#Terrier STAR STUDENT TUITION ASSISTANCE & RELIEF

TerrierSTAR—Student Tuition Assistance & Relief—was initially established to assist those students and families who found themselves in need because of the coronavirus pandemic. Prep’s President, Bro. Leonard Conway, O.S.F., tried to ease the burden at the time by allowing for deferral of tuition payments, pledging that NO student will be denied his or her St. Francis Prep education due to financial difficulties brought on by the coronavirus. Over $2 million in tuition payments were deferred and, thankfully, just about that same amount was raised from generous alumni, parents and friends,including an extraordinary “matching gift” of nearly $900,000 from Julie Chen Moonves ‘87. This was an absolute Godsend at the time, allowing hundreds of Prep students to remain here (and even enroll here for the first time). Today, the TerrierSTAR Fund is replenished each year by way of GivingTuesday donations and it continues to help many deserving students and families in need.

THE PAULETTE & VINCENT A. TOSCANO ’53 SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Funded through the extraordinary generosity of Paulette H’08 and the late Vincent A. Toscano ’53 this permanently endowed scholarship fund will aim to ease the burden of tuition for Prep students during any given academic year. Each student selected for the scholarship will receive a tuition-free education for that academic year, with the award being renewable in each subsequent year provided the student remains in good academic standing.

You may pledge a gift and arrange convenient payment installments. Next year you will be asked to consider your “pledged” support for the campaign to help fund the Prep’s modernization program.

CORPORATE MATCHING GIFTS

Many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match any charitable contributions made by their employees, and in many cases, even retirees and/or spouses. A matching gift allows your donation to go further. If your company is eligible, request a matching gift form from your company’s Benefits department. Complete and sign the form and send it in with your gift. We will do the rest.
