A Message From The School President Dear Graduates and Friends of St. Francis Prep: This fall we commemorated the 40th Anniversary of the Prep’s move from North 6th Street in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn to Francis Lewis Boulevard in Fresh Meadows, Queens— and the beginning of the co-ed era at Prep which initially involved our Brooklyn boys, the boys and girls from the former Bishop Reilly H.S. and our first freshmen class of boys and girls, all of whom came together to form the new St. Francis Prep, eventually becoming the largest, private, Catholic secondary school in the nation (a distinction we maintain today). One of the ways we highlighted this forty-year benchmark was to unveil three magnificent new science labs on the east side of our school complex this past September. (New labs and other science facilities on the west side of the complex were scheduled to be available to students by Thanksgiving.) This work is part of Phase III of the Prep’s Capital Improvement and Modernization Program. (You may remember that Phase I resulted in a completely upgraded infrastructure and Phase II resulted in our wonderful Physical Fitness and Art Education facilities.) Originally, Phase III called for a new building to house our science and music programs (plus new lockers and a dance studio). However, upon reviewing construction bids and after careful consideration by the Administration and Board of Trustees this past spring, it became very clear that it would make a great deal more sense to utilize existing spaces to achieve the same result (if not a better result): Modern, spacious, technologically sound, student-friendly science and music facilities that will be second-to-none in the metropolitan area. The cost savings alone made this a “no-brainer” for the Prep, but when it became apparent that by going this different route the new science and music facilities could be more “eye-catching” than we ever dreamed of here, there was no turning back. And the initial results are spectacular as you can see from the pictures of the new labs on the cover and on pages 4-7. Construction of new music facilities (and other components of the Phase III plan) will follow in

2015 with the end result being highly advanced learning, practice and performance spaces for two award-winning programs (science and music) that deserve only the best. I tell you this because I believe it is important for you to know that your generous contributions, gifts and pledges are being put to very good use each-and-every-day for the benefit of our students. In fact, we would be extremely hard pressed to make the investment we have made in these much needed capital improvements and our outstanding academic and extracurricular programs without your help. So thank you for all you have done and will continue to do for the Prep! You should be very proud of all the things you have helped us accomplish, thereby solidifying the Prep’s position at the forefront of Catholic secondary school education in the metropolitan area. Accordingly, in these pages you will find a listing of all 2013-14 fiscal year contributions, with donors (thru August 31st) recognized alphabetically within each giving category and also by graduating class. You will also see information about our named scholarship fund program, opportunities for planned giving, plus the upcoming event calendar. You will also see another mention of The Campaign for St. Francis Prep: The Next 150 (Stage Two of our Capital Campaign that benefits our Modernization Program) which continues through 2015, turning soon to all alumni, parents, friends to help us achieve our goals. Over the past six months there have been some exciting new developments with regard to the upcoming Phase III of the Prepâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Capital Improvement and Modernization Program. As you probably know, Phase III involves the creation of new, state-of-the-art science and music facilities and a dance studio. (Phase I of the program resulted in a completely upgraded infrastructure and Phase II resulted in our wonderful Physical Fitness and Art Education facilities.) Originally, the Phase III program called for a new building to house science and music (and the new lockers and dance studio). However, upon reviewing construction bids and after careful consideration by the Administration and Board of Trustees this past spring it became very clear that it would make a great deal more sense to utilize existing spaces to achieve the same, if not better, result: Modern, spacious, technologically sound, studentfriendly science and music facilities that will be second-to-none in the metropolitan area.

It was apparent that by going this different route, the new science and music facilities could be even more technologically advanced than we ever dreamed and could be achieved at a significant cost savings. And so early last summer Phase III of the Modernization Program officially began with the complete dismantling, re-designing and re-construction of the science labs and related facilities on the east side of the school complex. These facilities were ready in September. Work continued on the labs and the other science related areas on the west side of the complex and this was completed just before Thanksgiving. (See images on the next page.) Construction of the new music facilities (and other components of the Phase III plan) will follow in 2015 with the end result being a spectacular series of highly advanced learning, practice and performance spaces for two award-winning programs (science and music) that deserve only the best.

And with your help we will succeed! Thank you for your continued support. Pictured at right and on the following pages: Several of Prep’s science classrooms (three on the east side, and three on the west side) were completely renovated. The newly redesigned classrooms, labs, and lab prep facilities provide both students and faculty some of the most advanced instructional space on the secondary school level anywhere in the metropolitan area. Additionally, a stadium-seating style lecture classroom (bottom right) was also constructed and now offers Prepsters a true “college lecture” environment.

October 2014: The Propagation of the Faith Office in the Diocese of Brooklyn recognized schoolchildren from around the diocese for their donations to the missions. For the first time, a high school was recognized for extraordinary support of the Missions. St. Francis Prep was cited for its support of St. Francis School in Lare, Kenya, which is run by the Franciscan Brothers of Galway, the founding order of the Brooklyn Franciscan Brothers. THE BROTHER RALPH CLIFFORD, O.S .F.

PLANNED GIVING SOCIETY Brother Ralph Clifford served as Treasurer for 35 years prior to his untimely passing in the Fall of 2002. His fiscal policies helped keep St. Francis Prep on sound financial footing. The Prep honored Brother Ralph’s memory in several ways. The Prep’s Auditorium was named in his memory and a special “giving society” was established in his name for alumni, parents and friends who include St. Francis Prep in their estate plans. Members of this giving society are invited each year to the President’s Dinner and will be afforded permanent recognition as members of The Brother Ralph Clifford Society. All estate gifts are unrestricted unless otherwise designated by the donor.

A planned gift has the potential to provide a meaningful gift to Prep along with membership in the School’s Bro. Ralph Clifford, O.S.F. Planned Giving Society, which honors all those who have made a bequest or other planned gift in support of St. Francis Prep. The following are a few benefits of Planned Gifts: • Provide lifetime income for you and, if you wish, another beneficiary • Give you substantial federal income-tax charitable deduction • Enable you to turn low-yielding assets into higher income stream • Reduce or eliminate taxes on capital gains • Eliminate or reduce federal estate taxes

Bequests This is a gift made by a provision in one’s will naming St. Francis Prep as a beneficiary. This can help reduce estate taxes. Life Insurance & Retirement Plans If you own a life insurance policy that is no longer needed, it can be a perfect vehicle for a charitable gift! To receive a charitable deduction, name St. Francis Prep as both the owner and the beneficiary of the policy. If the policy has cash value, you can take a charitable deduction approximately equal to the cash value at the time of the gift. Trusts and Wills All of part of what remains after loved ones have been provided for can be put in trust or directed for the use of St. Francis Prep. Assets can be put aside also for a limited period of time and then returned to the donor.

St. Francis Preparatory School

Unit Trusts A Unit Trust has a fixed percentage rate of return on the initial principal value. Benefits include an income tax deduction, the avoidance of capital gains tax (when appreciated securities are used), as well as an estate tax reduction. St. Francis Prep requires a minimum gift of $25,000 to establish this. Charitable Gift Annuity This gifts allows the donor to receive benefits for his/her lifetime and to qualify for charitable tax deduction. This form of support is attractive when one has highly appreciated assets. St. Francis Prep requires a minimum gift of $100,000 to establish this. A Charitable Remainder Trust This form of support transfers assets to a trustee, who then manages the trust and pays an income back to the donor for life or for a specific time period. When the trust terminates, the remainder passes to St. Francis Prep.

George Dillman ‘00, an employee of Con Edison, died in an explosion as he was carrying out routine electrical maintenance work in a manhole in 2008. He was 26 years old. His colleagues at Con Ed, along with Dillman family members and friends organized a golf outing in his memory. Each year, the proceeds of the golf outing as well as other donations received throughout the year are directed into the building of the George Dillman ‘00 Memorial Scholarship Fund at St. Francis Prep. He was posthumously promoted to Fire Captain. The scholarship award recipient must be a current member of the SFP Track & Field Team. The Michael F. Lynch Scholarship Fund was established by his brother and sisters through the generous support of his extended family and friends. “Big Mike” as he was fondly known was last seen rescuing people from an elevator in the South Tower of the World Trade Center after the attacks on September 11, 2001. Michael and his seven siblings were raised by his parents, Catherine and Danny (SFP Class of ‘47), in Flushing, Queens. In 1986, Big Mike became a proud graduate of St. Francis Prep where he had studied, played basketball and made many friends. After graduation he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from SUNY Albany and went on to become a member of the FDNY (Engine 54, Ladder 4,Battalion 9). Big Mike loved sports, the fire department and St. Francis Prep but was truly devoted to his wife, Denise, and two sons, Michael and Jack. This scholarship fund is designed to keep Michael’s memory alive in the spirit of the Franciscan traditions by enabling deserving students to attend his beloved alma mater. THE BERNICE AND JAMES E. John “Zeek” Marchassalla was the captain of the SFP 1978 CHSFL City Division Championship football team. He was named the head coach of the JV team in 1981 and coached what went on to become, arguably, one of the best teams to ever play at the Prep. Port Authority Police Officer Alfonse J. Niedermeyer, was a genuine hero even before the heroic rescue efforts at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. In 1992, he received a special citation for rescuing passengers from a jet that kidded off a runway at LaGuardia Airport. Initial funding for this permanent scholarship fund came through the generosity of Al’s wife, Nancy, and ongoing support from family members, classmates and friends to insure that the fund can provide financial assistance to deserving students at the Prep in perpetuity. FDNY Firefighter Daniel Pujdak died while battling a blaze in 2007. Danny was a spirited person who always sought to help others.
