President’s Message Brother Leonard Conway, O.S.F. Dear Graduates and Friends, We have just concluded another remarkable school year at the Prep with every one of our 633 seniors graduating on June 3rd. Nearly every one of them (99.1%) will be attending college in September—including many of the most prestigious schools in the country. As a group, these seniors were offered more than $150 million in college scholarships! Thanks in large measure to YOUR involvement and support we continue to offer all our students a truly outstanding academic and extracurricular program that challenges them to SUCCEED. And they do! In my travels across the country visiting with alumni this past year, this has been my primary message: “Please know that your participation in our important work pays huge dividends as evidenced by the tremendous accomplishments of our students AND the beautiful new and updated facilities that are a reflection of these accomplishments.” With this in mind, we have taken the opportunity in this issue of Grad News to celebrate the involvement of so many of our graduates in our SPECIAL EVENTS (like the Red & Blue Terrier Ring of Honor Gala and the Annual Golf Classic), CLASS REUNIONS (especially the Spring Reunion and Alumni Hall of Fame festivities), ALUMNI CHAPTER RECEPTIONS, ANNUAL MEMORIAL MASS, and HOMECOMING WEEKEND. As I have stated many times in the past, we could never accomplish all the things nor could we provide all the resources we do for our students without your continued interest. You help us maintain our affordable tuition levels, fund special projects and programs (i.e. The Campaign for St. Francis Prep which continues to support our magnificent modernization efforts), and provide financial assistance and scholarships for many deserving students. So thank you very much for everything you do for this great school! Once again, these Grad News pages will provide a wonderful reminder of the numerous events and activities that help keep you connected with us and with your classmates. St. Francis Prep Walk-A-Thon 1.

On Friday, September 30th, the SFP Jazz Band (under the direction of Music Department Chair “Doc” Corbino) rallied the student body, faculty, staff and alumni as they embarked on a trek through Cunningham Park for the 6th Annual Walk-a-thon! The course was shortened this year due to the inclement weather, but it did not dampen the spirit and enthusiasm! All told, more than $280,000 was raised this year bringing the total proceeds of this annual event—to more than $1.7 million— all of which benefits special projects and programs at the Prep, most notably the current Capital Improvement and Modernization Project. The progress is quite evident: the creation of the new Physical Education and Art Education Centers, totally overhauled Science Classrooms and Labs. Additional phases of this modernization program will continue over the next several years, with the construction of new Music Education facilities now underway. The 7th Annual Walk-a-thon is scheduled for Friday, September 29th at the Prep.

THE ANNUAL MASS OF REMEMBRANCE We Remember and we Pray

The Church has a wonderful tradition of setting aside November as a special time for prayerfully remembering our deceased loved ones. Each year, on the first Sunday of November, the St. Francis Prep community celebrates a special Mass each year to remember deceased alumni and other members of the SFP family. We also take the opportunity to honor many others who have passed. Presentations are made to the student recipients of the several of the “named” and “memorial” Scholarship Funds. (See opposite page.) On November 6th, more than 500 alumni, family and friends gathered for the Prep’s for Mass and attended the buffet brunch which followed.

Prior to the start of mass, SFP Chaplain, Father Mark Simmons, presided over an outdoor ceremony to bless the newly added memorial bricks and other memorials on “The Pathway to St. Francis”. (Pictured above, left.) Immediately after that, the Prep dedicated the Patrick Butler Biology Lab (E -113) which was donated by Dorothy and John P. Butler ‘82. (See opposite page.) Immediately following Mass, family members and friends of the Giammona and Niedermeyer families gathered in the gym for the “Raising of the Banners of Honor”.

Dedication of the Patrick Butler biology lab Donated by Dorothy & John P. Butler ‘82 On November 6, 2016, we dedicated our new Biology Lab (E 113) to the memory of Patrick Butler, devoted Prep parent who passed away on January 3, 2013. We are very grateful to the Butler family for their generosity! Two years ago, Phase III of SFP’s Modernization Program officially began with the complete dismantling, re-designing and re-construction of the science labs. The result is a thoroughly modernized array of classroom and lab facilities that are state-ofthe-art by a variety of measures. It’s a tradition that dates back to the days when SFP was located in Brooklyn. Revived during the Prep’s Sesquicentennial Anniversary in 2008, it has been growing stronger in both spirit and in the numbers every year since.

The 2017

Annual President’s Dinner Brother Leonard Conway, O.S.F. hosted the Annual President’s Dinner on Saturday, April 9th in the Prep’s library. This annual event is the Prep’s salute to the loyal alumni, parents, faculty, staff, trustees and friends whose generosity at the “leadership” giving level helped St. Francis Prep in many wonderful ways during the past year. Nearly 200 guests were in attendance for cocktails and dinner. The St. Francis Prep String Orchestra, under the direction of Music Department faculty member, Robert Johnston performed. During dinner, Bro. Leonard delivered an update on all of the latest developments at the Prep. SFP Principal, Patrick McLaughlin ‘73 provided an overview on the many academic achievements of our students. Afterwards, two student representatives of the Class of 2017, Orlando Santiago and Renee Grasso, (pictured in photo #4) each spoke about how the experience at Prep helped inspire them to reach higher, strive and achieve. Both will be attending Binghamton University Honors College. Renee will be studying Business and Orlando will study Arts & Sciences.

Golf & Tennis Classic It was yet another banner year for Prep Alumni and friends. On Monday, June 19th, over 175 golfers gathered at the Cherry Valley Club in Garden City, NY to support the Prep and honor two distinguished members of the SFP community—Tennis Coach John Brennan H’03 and Robert A. Waegelein, CPA ‘78. The morning golf session was well attended and the afternoon golf session was sold out. A wonderful breakfast preceded the morning session and a barbecue lunch preceded the afternoon shotgun start. Over 250 guests attended the awards dinner that evening. Homecoming Weekend 2016 Hoops Tournament in Memory of Jimmy ‘79 & James Prendergast H’11 Homecoming Weekend begins with a Three-on-Three Basketball Tournament on Thursday, October 20, 2016 in the Prep’s Gym. More than 100 alumni, friends and members of the Prendergast family participated. Raffles, prizes and refreshments were all part of this wonderful evening. A 3-Point Shooting Contest was held too! 2016 Homecoming Day at the Races Alumni, family and friends gathered in the exclusive Turf and Field Club October 22, 2016 at Belmont Park for the Annual Homecoming Day at the Races. The weather was mixed and the races were exciting. A few intrepid members of our group braved the rain and the wind to get to the Winner’s Circle to meet the jockey who rode the winning horse—Strawberry Tequila—in the race dedicated to St. Francis Prep. In addition to the excitement of placing some lucky bets, one fortunate guest took home the proceeds of our 50/50 Raffle. The 2017 Homecoming Day at the Races will be held on Sat. October 21, 2017. On Saturday, April 8, 2017 the Annual Spring Reunion and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony honored some very special members of the SFP community, Patrick J. Carroll ‘60, Paul P. Iacullo ‘68 and Hon. William A. Viscovich ‘79 were inducted into the SFP Alumni Hall of Fame. Prep’s President, Brother Leonard Conway, OSF, conferred the title of “Honorary Alumnus” upon Warren J. Hance, Jr., Mary Kobel-Lamonte and Clare Walker. The Reunion was a wonderful celebration of the love and friendships that grew out of what many alumni frequently refer to as “the best four years of their life”. The reunion anniversary Classes of 1967, 1962, 1957, 1952, 1947 and 1942 were recognized as the newest members of the Golden Terrier Society— an honor bestowed upon alumni who have celebrated the 50th, 55th, 60th, 65th and 70th anniversary of their graduation. Each of them was presented with a special medal and they enjoyed cocktails and dinner in the library. The 25th Silver Anniversary Class of 1992 along with the Classes of 1987 1982, 1977 and 1972 gathered in the cafeteria for cocktails and dinner. The Florida Area Alumni Chapter Reunion alternates locations between the east and west coasts each year. These included the new science classrooms and labs that were recently completed and the ongoing renovations to the music education facilities. Alumni Director, Bro. SFP Information Technology Alumni Chapter Reception The Tech Alumni Chapter held its first reception on the first official day of autumn—Wednesday, September 21, 2016 on the 14th floor rooftop terrace at the company headquarters of BCM One on 5th Avenue. Prep is extremely grateful to Frank Wassenbergh ‘95 (VP of Sales at BCM One) and his company for granting us use of the space. We are also indebted to Jane Scandurra ’77, our Tech Alumni Chapter leader for all the work that she did in planning and executing the event! (Thank you Jane Scandurra!)

Jane Scandurra ’77 moderated the Q&A featuring T.J. Costello, the Director of “The Internet of Things” at Cisco Systems. (Cisco Systems, Inc. designs, manufactures and sells networking equipment worldwide and is the largest networking company in the world.) Several members of the Prep’s faculty and staff were present including Ed Woods ’73 (IT Director), Joe Sciame ’78 (Chair of Business Department), Brother Robert Kent, OSF (Alumni Director), Bob Angeletti (Director of Development) and Prep’s President, Brother Leonard Conway, OSF.

More than 50 alumni representing a wide spectrum of graduating class years and industries enjoyed views of the beautiful Manhattan skyline--the terrace afforded a view of both the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building! In addition to enjoying “networking with a view”, there was a moderated Q&A session about the “Internet of Things” (IoT) – which is connecting cars, homes, wearables, and everyday objects to the Cloud – and has the potential to radically change the way we live and work.

The Greater Philadelphia Area Alumni Chapter On Saturday, October 8, 2016 SFP Philly Chapter coordinators Danny Sosa ‘96 and Moises Young ‘96 rallied Prep alumni from the greater Philadelphia area to celebrate the autumn season at Winetoberfest in Skippack, PA. (Wintoberfest offers wine lovers the chance to savor the flavors of vintages at events big and small.) If you live, work or study in the Philly area, this alumni chapter is a great way to keep in touch with the Prep! The Healthcare Services Chapter & Legal Services Chapter Alumni Reception On Thursday, February 16, 2017 the SFP Healthcare Services and Legal Services Alumni Chapter held their annual event at The Inn at New Hyde Park with 45 attendees. The reception offers an excellent opportunity for alumni to network with those who share the dual bond of the Prep experience and work in the legal and health care professions. In past years the reception was held in NYC and the change in venue provided an opportunity for alumni who work or reside in Queens, Nassau and Western Suffolk to participate more conveniently. Nancy Demers ‘91 & Joseph Pantaleo ‘03 are the chapter coordinators of the Healthcare Services Chapter. Felicia Varlese ‘79, heads up the effort on behalf of the Legal Services Alumni Chapter. St. Francis Prep’s 3rd annual reception for alumni who work in the Arts (film, TV, photography, design, painting, drawing, theatre, dancing, music, architecture, fashion, advertising, journalism, writing, etc.) was held on Thursday, March 23, 2017 in the Manhattan office of Aquent — an agency that specializes in procuring creative, digital, and marketing talent for many companies. Prep is grateful to Salvatore Petronella ’85 for graciously allowing us the use of Aquent’s office space for the event. Participants ranged from recent graduates to seasoned professionals. Brother Leonard addressed the group and spoke about all of the amazing things going on at St. Francis Prep! We owe special thanks to the chapter coordinator and venue host, Michelle Kawka ‘95 for all of her contributions in making this event successful! Prep’s President, Brother Leonard Conway spoke about the many wonderful things taking place at St. Francis Prep and introducted the guest speaker —Angela C. Cavanna ’82. Angela is a Clinical Assistant Professor and course Director at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine and Chair of the committee for education and evaluation in sports medicine for the American Osteopathic Association. She spoke enthusiastically about the great education she received at St. Francis Prep and how it has influenced her career choice, prepared her for her profession and for life! SFP Night at Citi Field St. Francis Prep was recognized by The New York Mets at Citi Field on Tuesday night, May 30th as the Mets took on the Milwaukee Brewers. Our highly regarded Chamber Choir, under the direction of David Kobayashi, Esq. ‘93, was on the field to perform their own special rendition of the National Anthem. The ceremonial first pitch was thrown by our Principal, Mr. Patrick McLaughlin ‘73 with the assistance of Patrick T. McLaughlin ‘07 (Faculty). More than 600 of our students, faculty/staff, and family members were seated just beyond the left field fence. It was a great night; a fine display of Terrier spirit! And, the Mets won, 5-4!

SFP ALUMNI PARTICIPATION: The “Cor” of Terrier Pride and Tradition Since 1858, generations of Terrier alumni recognize the value of a St. Francis Prep education. They see that Prep strikes a wonderful balance between academic excellence, a caring and supportive community and many vibrant extracurricular opportunities. A tradition of generosity and pride in alma mater has vaulted alumni participation to where it is today with over 5,000 graduates and friends involved in advancement and and re-engagement activities at the Prep each year. Participation has become the rule rather than the exception—and it takes on many forms. It includes everything from Class Reunions and attendance at Alumni Chapter Events to supporting to the Prep’s Annual Fund and/or The Campaign for St. Francis Prep. Your Participation enables Prep to achieve many important things:

1. It creates networking opportunities that enable alumni to meet other professionals in their field at various events; provides opportunities for recent graduates to obtain internships and for current students to consider career paths and/or select a college that is right for them.

2. It enables us to

provide our students with outstanding academic and extracurricular offerings as well as financial assistance for many students who otherwise may not be able to afford a Prep education. n

3. It creates joyous

and spirited celebrations at alumni reunions and receptions when classmates and old friends re-connect and reminisce about “the best four years of their life.”

Why do we have such significant levels of support and participation? Perhaps it’s because so many alumni have formed meaningful and lasting bonds of friendship with their classmates and want to give something back to help insure that the Prep remains “a school of excellence in the Franciscan tradition” now and for generations to come.

SFP ALUMNI PARTICIPATION: The “Cor” of Terrier Pride and Tradition Giving back to the Prep, whether in actual dollars and/or involvement and participation, helps keep the school strong for future generations. Every monetary gift, regardless of size, influences the quality of education we offer, makes a difference in the lives of students, and helps maintain St. Francis Prep’s reputation as a “school of excellence.” The “call to service” is what has defined our Franciscan mission at the Prep for close to 160 years. Each year, the members of the Alumni Board of Directors help the Prep community in a myriad of ways. They support the Prep through their own means and also by soliciting the support of friends and classmates. Most importantly, they coordinate and promote the 25 alumni events and reunions that bring us in contact with more than 5,000 Terrier Alumni and Friends each year.

Special Events Annual Walk-a-thon Now in its seventh year, this event engages every member of the student body, parents and alumni. Thus far, it has contributed over $1.7 million toward the Capital Improvement and Modernization Program Annual Mass of Remembrance Each first Sunday of November we honor and celebrate the memory of all departed alumni, family and friends of the Prep. Prior to Mass, the chaplain blesses all of the new memorials on the “Pathway to St. Francis” and officiates the raising of the “Banners of Honor” in the Gym. Named and Memorial Scholarship Awards are also presented. The day concludes with a buffet breakfast. NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade This brings together hundreds of alumni, students, faculty/staff and parents to march as a community up Fifth Avenue representing the Prep. It also serves as a nod to our Franciscan founders’ roots in Mt. Bellew, Ireland. The Annual President’s Dinner Salutes the loyal alumni, parents, faculty, staff, trustees and friends whose generosity at the leadership level helped SFP in many wonderful ways during the year.

Annual June Golf Classic Going into its 25th year, the net proceeds of this event benefit the Prep and come from those who play as part of a foursome or as individual golfers or simply provide their contributions and sponsorships. Our honorees also draw many additional dinner guests who provide support through sponsorships such as journal ads, tee and hole sponsorships. Major Sponsorships from our loyal alumni and friends set the tone for support which we continue to grow and build upon each year. Red & Blue Terrier Ring of Honor Gala Recognizes the outstanding achievements of our prominent athletes, coaches, moderators and athletic programs that have enhanced the spirit and reputation of the Prep. The most recent event held on March 18, 2017 was attended by more than 700 guests. (This very special event is currently slated to be held every three years.)

This summer, we have already had many in our Prep community experience the beauty of our Franciscanism. Dr. Corbino created a course for a small group of our students to visit Assisi and Rome--two cities central to our Franciscan heritage. This experience gave them an opportunity to learn about our Franciscan heritage as well as the charism, mission and values so important to all of us at SFP. By visiting the actual sites so crucial to us, the students were able to “capture the spirit” of St. Francis as well as do research. Dr. Corbino, one of our Assisi Pilgrims shared his own love of St. Francis. The Franciscan Brothers have annually sponsored faculty/staff/administrators to participate in the Assisi Pilgrimage program. Ellen Schulyer and Sandi Vandermosten were our Assisi Pilgrims this year and had the blessing of spending extended time catching the Franciscan spirit in Assisi and Rome. As Assisi Pilgrims, they will assist in animating their students and colleagues in deepening our love for the Franciscan charism.

of Peace, conducted by the Little Sisters of the Poor is no stranger to us. Our Franciscan Youth Movement (FYM) under the direction of Brother James runs Service Retreats for any SFP student who wishes to participate in a Service Retreat. Learning about St. Francis and St. Jeanne Jugan, the students spend the day assisting the residents in their activities: sitting with them at lunch to chat and interact; serving the meals; moving the residents to the chapel, dining room, Bingo or any other activities. Queen of Peace along with Ozanam and other Nursing Homes for Religious Sisters, and Veterans Hospitals are the beneficiaries of FYM’s PROJECT JOY and receive seasonal Christmas letters from our students which are then delivered by FYM after school during FYM’s Christmas Visit to the Home.

Mrs. George Ann Kotowicz took a group of our students to The Notre Dame University for the Notre Dame Vision program which brought our students to develop an awareness of how teenagers can lead in our Church by reflecting on many of the role models we have in our faith.

Under the leadership of our Campus Minister for Service, Shawn Sempowich, several teachers traveled with a group of students on our Franciscan Immersion Trip to serve in an orphanage and other activities in Lima, Peru.

All of these programs attest to our Franciscan mission and charisma being alive internationally and locally. With a grateful heart we commend all in Our Franciscan family (named and un-named) students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, administration and campus ministry who LIVE OUR FRANCISCAN VALUES.

Christian Sullivan and Shawn Sempowich ran our Christian Service Academy (two sessions) training our students of the importance of service learning, participating in various service projects throughout Queens and Long Island. Each day after prayer, and an orientation, the students would have opportunities to serve in a soup kitchen, The INN etc. Dr. Sullivan and Brother James accompanied the students to Queen of Peace Residence. FRANCISCAN FOCUS || Brother Lawrence Boyle, O.S.F. • St. Francis Prep Class of 1962 Brother Lawrence Boyle, O.S.F., was raised in Glendale and is a graduate of St. Pancras School, (Glendale), and graduated from St. Francis Prep when it was located at 186 North 6th Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. He entered St. Francis Novitiate, in Upper Brookville, L.I., in 1962 and professed vows on Aug. 2, 1964. Brother Lawrence earned a bachelor’s degree in history from St. Francis College; a masters in education from St. John’s University; and also a professional diploma in educational administration and supervision from Fordham University, Lincoln Center.

Before coming to St. Francis Prep in 1971, he taught at Our Lady of Angels, Bay Ridge; and St. Joseph’s School, Babylon, L.I. He taught at Prep and was chairman of the Social Studies Department. Beginning in 1977, he served as an administrator at various schools, including: St. Bartholomew School, Elmhurst; St. Mary Star of the Sea School, Carroll Gardens; and Fort Greene Catholic School, Adelphi Street. He also served as assistant to the academic dean at St. Francis College. In 1984, he joined the faculty of St. Anthony’s H.S, when it relocated to South Huntington, L.I., assisting in student services and teaching social studies.

He joined the staff of the Superintendent of Education in the Diocese of Brooklyn in 1988, and he served as a district superintendent for Brooklyn East. Brother Lawrence returned to St. Anthony’s H.S. in 1998 as a teacher and then school treasurer. He then rejoined the staff of St. Francis Prep in 2004 as the Registrar and currently serves in that position. He is known for his tireless work ethic, attention to detail and dedication. This past April, he celebrated his 55th Anniversary of graduation from St. Francis Prep. We are grateful for all that Brother Lawrence does for the students and their families at St. Francis Prep!

Brother William Boslet, O.S.F.,

Brother Bill was a parishioner of St. Ignatius of Loyola, Hicksville, L.I., when he entered the Franciscan Brothers on July 1, 1966 and professed first vows on Jan. 6, 1968. He taught French at the Prep, when it was located in Williamsburg in the 1970s before being named director of youth ministry in the Diocese of Bridgeport, CT. He returned to the Prep when he served as vocation director (1983-86) for the Order. From 1992 to 1998, he served as the alumni director and student activities director at St. Francis Prep. In 1999, he was appointed vicar for religious in the Diocese of Rockville Centre, a post he held until his election as superior general of the Franciscans in 2007. Since leaving that office in 2015, he has been assistant to the president of St. Francis College, Brooklyn Heights.

Dear Brother Robert, Bob, and Fellow Classmates, Many of us still carry deep sadness from the 9/11 attacks that harmed and scarred close relatives, friends and Prep Alumni. Much healing is to be found in the new play, “Come From Away,” currently performing at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater. Many rave reviews have been written about this inspiring model of loving our neighbor in a time of maximum danger and disconnected need, but I have not yet seen a review which describes how this magnificent play is, at its core, the dramatic articulation of the way St. Francis lived his life and treated his neighbors.

Jack Cahill ‘57 is a wonderful friend of St. Francis Prep and one of the leaders in his class, the great Class of 1957. He is truly a Franciscan at heart and his loyalty to the Prep and his school spirit are unwavering!

Brother Leonard Conway, O.S.F.,

Brother Leonard entered the Franciscan Brothers from Holy Name of Jesus Parish, Windsor Terrace, on July 1, 1966 and professed first vows on January 6, 1968. He taught mathematics at the Prep at North 6th Street beginning in 1971. Each summer from 1977 to 1989, he was director of Camp Alvernia, L.I. In 1979 he was appointed director of computer services St. Francis Prep, Fresh Meadows, a position he held until 1983 when he became Principal of Prep in 1983, a post he held for 30 years. He currently serves as President of St. Francis Prep.

Brother Robert entered the Franciscan Brothers from Holy Name of Jesus Parish, Windsor Terrace, in 1966 and professed first vows on Jan. 6, 1968. The authors have even set the words of the prayer based on the life of St. Francis to music in the most touching and compelling way. “Come From Away” is the story of that prayer come to life on the Broadway stage. One cannot help but feel that St. Francis himself, who – as we know -- was one of the greatest dramatic superstars of all time and arguably the most highly regarded person in the West in the last thousand years, would have applauded this play himself. I hope that one of the gifted writers of our Grad News will write a review of this wonderful dramatization of the Prayer, “Lord make me an instrument of Your peace….”

As a student at Prep, Sandra Martin ‘97 was involved in the San Fran Yearbook Club and the Seraph Newspaper. She continues to do amazing things as an entrepreneur. 20 years later I am an entrepreneur with my Mindful & Conscious Parenting business – Self Balanced Solutions, LLC. Last year launched the release of Today’s Inspired Latinas, Vol 2 – a book collaboration of which I am one it’s 26 featured authors. The book is a collection of stories that highlights Latinas who are making a difference as they share personal experiences of triumph, success and perseverance. I welcome you to check out a brief review in May 2016 Inc. Magazine. (Search for: 26 Quotes on Perseverance From Inspired Latina Leaders) I have one high school friend who has reached out to me and interested in creating a small event/panel/ discussion/q&a/ etc for October’s Hispanic Heritage Month. This made me think of my alma mater in the event that this too might be of interest for SFP and it’s community. The thought is to inspire, motivate and share “ real” everyday women’s stories who are making an impact with the young impressionable high school women who are smart, motivated, ambitious and navigating their own deluge of information that can easily steer them off course. A Message from Brother Robert Kent, O.S.F., Alumni Director Dear Alumni and Friends, It is hard to believe that another school year has come and gone and that we will soon be welcoming the new incoming class of 2021. Once again, our school year concluded successfully with the last day of regular classes occurring on June 7th. With the largest crowd ever assembled for a St. Francis Prep graduation, all of our 633 seniors received their diplomas at a ceremony held at St. John’s University. Each year it seems that the outstanding accomplishments of our graduation class grow ever more impressive. This claim is easily justified by the fact that this year virtually every graduating senior will attend college in the fall. Moreover, members of the Class of 2017 have been accepted to a total of 308 colleges and universities. These include Ivy League Universities and a variety of prestigious institutions throughout the country. As a group our graduating seniors have been offered more than 158 million dollars in scholarship funds. We welcome them as part of our Prep Family in a new capacity, for they have now made the official transition from graduating seniors to alumni of St. Francis Prep. It is virtually impossible to overstate the depth of our pride in all they have accomplished. Of course, we must acknowledge that credit for their success has its origin in the outstanding and dedicated work of the faculty, staff and administration of the school. Their unfailing commitment to impart their knowledge, and use their expertise and guidance for the greater good of our students has produced such a rich harvest. While we certainly all take pride in the past accomplishments of the Prep and its alumni, we are also bound to look forward towards the future and willingly accept the challenges it holds out to us. Today the challenges loom ever more menacingly, and now, more than ever before, it is essential that our alumni rise to the occasion, taking an active role in securing the future of the Prep for the years ahead. In the very spirit of that commitment to actively participate, let us begin with a great turnout for our Homecoming Weekend. This year’s weekend will commence on Thursday, October 19th with the 3-on-3 Hoops Tournament in memory of Jimmy Prendergast ’79 & James Prendergast H ’11. It will continue on Friday, October 20th with the friends of SFP Football Event at Bourbon Street in Bayside. This will be followed on Saturday, October 21st, with

a Day at the Races at Belmont Park in the Turf and Field Club. Finally, on Sunday, October 22nd, we will first offer our 5K Fun Run in honor of our September 11th Heroes, and then offer our Homecoming Football game against Xavier High School at 1:00 pm at Martin Van Buren High School. The Prep Southern California Alumni Group is being reborn from the ashes, like the phoenix. How fitting that the Phoenix Arizona “Prepsters”, lead by Bob Caccamo ’59, have joined forces with Pat Cashin ’59 to organize an area reunion in Redondo Beach, California for October 27th, 28th and 29th, 2017. Please understand that their reunion comes with a money back guarantee that you will have the best time ever, and even be given the opportunity to recapture your New York accent. On Friday, October 4th, we celebrated the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi with a liturgy offered by Bishop Paul Sanchez. The Canticle Citation was presented to Robert Corbino, Ed.D, Robert Guthenberg, Stephen Marino, Ph.D and Sister Mary Ann Napier, C.S.J, for their 40 years of service; Jean-Patrick Devesin, Joseph DiSomma, Laura Hassett, Gregory Madama, Xenos Novoa and Lorna Pietryga-Park for their 15 years of Service, the President’s Award for 15 years of service was presented to Vesna Vulin. In addition recognition was given to Brother Adrian Fannon on the occasion of his 60th anniversary as a Franciscan Brother. This was a great time to celebrate all that was accomplished by the faculty and staff of St. Francis Prep. I would like to take this time to recognize some special individuals who have made such considerable contributions to our Prep Community and who are now retiring this summer. Let us bid a fond farewell to Gerry Bryan for his 24 years of service in the English Department; Pat Cinque-Maher for 35 years of service as an Administrative Assistant to the Admissions Office; Joe Licata for his 43 years of service as a teacher and chairperson in the Foreign Language Department; Agnes Pappas for her 10 years of service as an Administrative Assistant to the Medical Office; Don Sileo for his 37 years of service in the Guidance Department. Finally, we recognize Betty Pietromonaco for her amazing 42 years of service as the Coordinator of our Volunteers Staff. All together this represents a combined total of 191years of service to the Prep. At this juncture, we would also like to acknowledge that this year Phyllis Gambino ’90

received the Faculty/Staff Franciscan Spirit Award and Marcel Avril ’17 received the student Franciscan Spirit Award; both awards were presented at the graduation ceremony. They truly exemplify the Franciscan ideals in all aspects of their lives. We salute all of you for your commitment and years of loyal service. We thank you for the profound impact that you have made on the lives of those in your care. Now it is time to smell the proverbial roses. The entire Prep community values and acknowledges the faculty and staff members for their many dedicated years of loyal service. We are grateful that they are partners in our Franciscan Mission. As we begin a new era, our 159th year, we look back and acknowledge the myriad ways in which our students have risen to the level of excellence in the diverse fields of science, music, art and athletics. But we also wish to acknowledge the whole range of selfless acts of school related and communal services performed, all of which exemplify and manifest the spirit of the Gospel and spirit of St. Francis of Assisi. Let us hope and pray that God’s blessings will continue to shower down upon all of us and that with the combined talents of our administration, faculty, staff and alumni the Prep will be able, in even more creative ways, to respond to the needs of the students of tomorrow. I hope that you will continue to support our fundamental mission: to provide an outstanding, well-rounded education in the Franciscan tradition to all the diverse students in the Prep community. Finally, I would like to offer congratulations to Father Bill Sweeney, for his appointment as Pastor at St. Francis deSales in Belle Harbor. Alumni In Print and On-the-Air John “Jake” McNicholas ‘74 brings the dangerous world of narcotics enforcement in New York City to life like no other. The cops are gritty, witty and sometimes giddy. Readers tag along with main characters, Detective Jimmy McTigue and his partner Bobby Washington onto the narcotics sets, the borough office and afterhours hangouts feeling as if they’re part of the team. The banter between the cops, who simultaneously seem to love and hate their job, is brutally honest. McNicholas knows their work as well as anybody, and politics be damned, does not hold anything back. It might be fiction, but one thing is for certain, McNicholas give readers an insider’s view of the ‘God’s work’ being performed everyday by the brave men and women assigned to the NYPD’s Narcotic Division.” (Source: Amazon Review)

Bob Martin ‘67 served the NYPD for 32 years in a wide variety of commands. These include the fabled Tactical Patrol Force (TPF), the Street Crime Unit, Mounted Unit, the 72nd, 69th, 6th Precincts, Queens and Bronx Detectives, and finally as the CO of the Special Investigations Division. Martin was a charter member and played for a dozen years with the NYPD’s Finest Football Team. He served for twelve years on the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) “Committee on Terrorism” and traveled extensively, in this country and abroad, speaking on the subject. He retired as a Deputy Inspector in 2000 and began writing. His stories have been published in numerous magazines and newspapers. Bronx Justice, based on an actual case, is his first novel.

Dr. Peter Rappa ‘79, a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician, takes a holistic approach to rehabilitation and recovery. He primarily treats patients with brain injury, stroke, or traumatic injury. Peter released his second book, A Hero in Time, which is a love story, wrapped in adventure with an unexpected ending, all the while delivering an uplifting message. The story begins at Steward Township Hospital in Meza, Texas, when an unidentified patient dropped in, namelessly, to the medical program. The backstory develops as the reader watches the medical team slowly discover not only the identity of the trauma victim but also the engaging synchronicity of how he came to be there. A medical theme and a complex plot take the reader back in time to the inception of young love and romance, while moving forward in time to touch on the concepts of the essence of selfless love, integrity, dedication and soul work. The underpinnings of the novel are spiritual without trying to be, and the plot is engaging as the mystery of Trauma Victim 14406 is knitted together.

Richie Burriesci ‘72 has published an extraordinarily light-hearted science fiction drama that he wrote 12 years ago as a screenplay entitled ONTARIO ROSE. In June 1972, Richie was a member of the last graduating classes of our Brooklyn campus. Bro. Ed Kent and Bro. Thomas Grady were two of his English teachers who noted his creative writing possibilities. They would be

proud of this accomplishment. Prepsters young and old will thoroughly enjoy this extraterrestrial adventure that commences in 1947 Roswell, New Mexico and culminates in Toronto, Canada. Shannan Ferry ’10 is a journalist from Queens who reports for NY1 News. She interned at NY1 in 2012, and returned in 2014 as a reporter. You’ll typically find Shannan out in the field covering stories around the city, but she also fills in behind the anchor desk and in the traffic studio. Prior to NY1, Shannan worked as a College Associate for Fox News Channel. She graduated from Hofstra University in 2014 where she studied broadcast journalism and political science. Shannan graduated from St. Francis Prep in 2010, and was involved a wide range of activities including the tennis team and student government association. Shannan’s mom, Donna DeLuca Ferry is also a graduate of St. Francis Prep--the Class of 1976!

Kevin Westly, T.M.R.F. ‘65 is the host of “That’s How I Spell Ireland” on WRHU 88.7 FM and WRHU.org on Saturdays from 5-8:00 PM. Over the years Kevin has been active in several Irish organizations and has received awards from Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann (Society of the Musicians of Ireland) and others organizations. He has won numerous singing competitions. Kevin has performed voice recitals and is often asked to sing the Irish and American Anthems at sporting and social events.

John Mullane ‘45 Brother Leonard visited with John and his wife, Madeline in February at their home in the Charlotte, NC area (pictured above) and presented them with some Prep apparel. Unfortunately, we learned that John then passed away in April. May he rest in peace!

The group also wanted to welcome their own Bobby Costanzo ‘60, who was visiting from Los Angeles (Hollywood). Edward Mulvihill, SFP Class of 1954 passed away on October 3, 2016. Ed and his lovely wife, Elsie attended nearly every one of our Florida Area Alumni Chapter events since 2008. Ed will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him. May he rest in peace!

Tim Leary, Class of 1963 Retires After 42 Years

A pre-game ceremony was held at his last home game in front of a standing room only crowd!

Surrounded by current and former players, his family, fans, faculty & staff, Coach Tim Leary ‘63 capped off a stellar 42-year career with the Terrier Basketball program. Both sides of the bleachers were filled with Prep “family” wanting to bid their former teacher, and coach, a farewell. Tim spoke of many experiences, the great players and his esteemed fellow coaches. He graciously thanked everyone for their support and for the tremendous privilege to be able to say that he played and coached at St. Francis Prep. The only one he said he wished could’ve been there was his lovely wife Claudia, who passed away over the summer after a lengthy battle with cancer. The ceremony was held at the team’s last home game vs. Holy Cross on February 12th. A reception was held after the game in the cafeteria which Coach Leary preferred because he could personally sit and talk with everyone; something he would not be able to do at a larger, more formal dinner. Tim will remain in the hearts and minds of everyone who loves the Terriers. Longtime assistant coach, and former Terrier player, Jimmy Lynch ‘99 was named the new head coach. (See pg. 50.)

Veteran Faculty member, Joe Licata H’00, Retires; Classroom Dedicated in his Honor by Benefactor and Assistant Football Coach Robert A. Waegelein ‘78 Joe was named an Honorary Alumnus of St. Francis Prep in 2000. In 2006, he was presented with the Franciscan Spirit Award by the SFP community and he was the recipient of the Teacher Recognition for Academic Excellence in 2012. Joe was also honored by the St. Francis Prep Alumni Board at their 22nd Annual Golf Classic in 2015. In his remarks, Joe expressed how grateful and blessed to have been a part of the St. Francis Prep community for such a long time. “I’ve been teaching at St. Francis Prep for 43 years,” he said. “I’ve never had a bad day. I don’t think many people can say that if they’ve been working at any place for 43 years and not have a bad day. I walk inside that building with a broad smile. I walk out of that building with a smile.” Congratulations Joe! We thank you for your many years of faithful and joyous service and wish you all the best in your well-deserved retirement! He served as the Terrier football moderator since 1977. Hundreds of current and former players were present. Former SFP Chaplain, Father Bill Sweeney gave the homily. Joe was presented with some well-deserved retirement gifts including a Fitbit; a St. Francis Prep football jersey with the No. 7, (representing his seven children); an autographed helmet by Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo; and tickets for a Cowboys game and private tour of AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas.

The most meaningful gift however, was the announcement that Prep is naming the classroom in which he taught all 43 years in his honor. It will be completely overhauled as part of the Prep’s ongoing Capital Improvement and Modernization Program, and will also be used as a study hall for football players. The costs of the renovation were underwritten by Robert Waegelein ‘78, who also serves as the Assistant Coach of the Varsity team.

Hon. William A. Viscovich ‘79 Elected to Queens County Supreme Court Congratulations to William A. “Bill” Viscovich, SFP Class of 1979. Bill was elected as a judge for the Queens County Supreme Court in the 11th Judicial District of New York. He was sworn in on January 5, 2017. He was previously a judge on the New York City Civil Court of Queens County, New York from 2008 to 2016. Bill began his career in 1989 as Counsel to Assemblywoman Nettie Mayersohn. He then served as counsel to the Queens County Clerk from 2001 until his judicial election in 2007. He joined the civil court in 2008. Bill received his B.A. from the State University of New York at Albany in 1983 and his J.D. from the Albany Law School of Union University in 1986.

As a loyal and dedicated alumnus, Bill has served on the SFP Alumni Board of Directors since 2005. In addition, he is a judge on the Prep’s Mock Trial program and provides Prepsters with invaluable advice, opportunities for internships and encourages them to become involved in their communities. Bill is also an enthusiastic supporter of the annual SFP Legal Professions Alumni Chapter Reception. In April of this year, Bill was inducted into the SFP Hall of Fame! (See page 20) Married to classmate and “soulmate” Felicia Varlese ‘79, they have two children: Adam, (SFP Class of 2015) and Erica, (SFP Class of 2017). They are dedicated and generous to the Prep. Bill’s two siblings, Diane Viscovich-O’Sullivan, (Class of 1989) and John Viscovich, (Class of 1981) are also members of the Prep “family.” Diane’s twin, Linda Viscovich-Ledbetter, blazed her own trail by attending St. Mary’s High School and later graduating from Herricks High School in New Hyde Park. Bill’s sister-in-laws, are also part of the Prep family; Laura A. Varlese-McCormack, Class of 1985 and Doris R. Varlese, Class of 1981.

Joe Miccio ‘77 Inspires a Love for the Game of Chess

As a New York City firefighter, Joe Miccio has saved scores of city residents. Now, he’s saving children from getting checkmated. The retired cop turned firefighter is bringing the centuries-old game of chess to a new generation of children by digitizing QuickChess, a variation he created that teaches people how to play within 10 minutes. Miccio, 57, created QuickChess when he was a firefighter at Ladder 127 in Jamaica, Queens, and a friend asked him if he would teach their kids how to play chess. “I’m not a chess expert, but I am pretty good at teaching and have a knack with working with young kids,” said Miccio. In order to teach the children, he designed a game with a smaller board and fewer pieces. It didn’t take them long to master the game and want to try the bigger board. “The kids don’t even realize they’re learning to play chess as they play this game,” Miccio said. “At a time when most people are playing zombie-shooting video games, these kids are learning not to pounce on a play,” Miccio said. “Because if they do, they will probably lose the game a few moves down the line.” Good work Joe! Rest in Peace Royce A. Mulholland ‘79 On March 3rd we lost a special member of the Prep “family” when Royce Mulholland ‘79 passed away suddenly. Royce had a big heart and a winning smile. His desire to make the world a better place was evidenced in his advocacy for affordable housing. His company, The Mulholland Group, developed, managed and was lauded for creating modern, multi-family housing in upstate New York as well as in Texas and Virginia. Royce, a childhood friend of former Governor Mario Cuomo’s daughter Maria Cuomo-Cole ‘80, worked on his 1982 Campaign for Governor. Royce was a natural politician, serving as class president at Prep. After Royce’s graduation from Ohio Wesleyan University, he went to work for Governor Cuomo. It was there he first learned of his love for housing and helping those less fortunate that gave him direction and shaped the balance of his life’s work. Royce loved St. Francis Prep and was a loyal and generous supporter of the various alumni events and fundraising programs at the school. He was also a longtime supporter of Providence House--Brooklyn, a non-profit shelter run by the Sisters of St. Joseph to help transition women who are homeless and recently released from prison back into society. He was a loving husband and father who embodied and believed deeply that “the value of a man is not measured by what he does for himself to make his life easier, but measured by what he does for others to make their lives easier.” Royce is survived by his wife Lauretta; daughters, Noelle, Shannon, Annie and Blair; and his son Royce Jr. He is also survived by his mother Dorothy Mulholland (his father, Joseph Mulholland ‘46, passed in 2002), brothers Sean and Josh (SFP Class of 1984), sister Raissa Petracca, and many nieces and nephews. May he rest in peace!

It is a competition designed to bring real-world economics into the classroom. Teams play the role of monetary policymakers by analyzing economic conditions and recommending a course for monetary policy. It’s an unforgettable experience in economic analysis, monetary policy decisionmaking, public speaking and teamwork. Fed Challenge participants develop skills—the ability to think analytically, to make effective presentations, to work as a team, to think on their feet—that are valuable in both their academic and professional careers. To compete, teams of three to five students offer a 12-minute presentation on the economy and participate in a 13-minute Q&A with the judges. Congratulations Salvatore G. Gangemi ‘86! “Best Lawyers”, the oldest and most respected peer-review publication in the legal profession, has announced that the attorneys from his firm, Murtha Cullina LLP have been selected to be included in the 2018 edition of The Best Lawyers in America®. Sal is among three Murtha Cullina attorneys selected as 2018 “Lawyers of the Year” in their respective practice areas. Sal practices in the area of employment law and litigation. He has devoted his entire career to the area of employment law, and has successfully represented clients in employment discrimination, harassment, wage and hour, and compensation cases and matters. He argued the case of Pachter v. Bernard Hodes Group, Inc., before the New York State Court of Appeals, New York’s highest court. His advocacy succeeded in the New York Court of Appeals recognizing that all employees, including highly compensated individuals, are protected by New York’s unlawful wage deduction statute. Since 2010, Mr. Gangemi has served on the Board of Advisors of the St. John’s School of Law, Labor and Employment Law Center. Since 2009, he has served on the Executive Board of the National Employment Lawyers Association - New York. In addition, in 2008, he was Chair of the Employment Law Committee of the Trial Lawyers Section of the New York State Bar Association.

FDNY Capt. Thomas Regan, SFP Class of 1990 was among three of NYC’s Bravest in Ladder Company 163 who rescued a 43-year old marathon runner from a fire that ripped through her Woodside home in October 2016. She was unconscious on the 6th floor when they found her in the burning building, the Daily News story reported. In an emotional firehouse reunion a day before Thanksgiving she visited the firehouse to say thank you. “They saved my life” said Claudia Hernandez. “The main thing that we’re proud of [is] that Claudia made such an outstanding recovery, because you kind of lose track of a victim of a fire. Rutgers University Names New Practice Facility in Honor of Marco Battaglia, SFP Class of 1990 At St. Francis Prep, Marco Battaglia starred as a wide receiver and free safety for the Terrier football team. As a junior, he totaled 31 receptions for 542 receiving yards and six touchdowns, which earned him a berth on the All-City team. The following year, he was voted Player of the Year after compiling nine interceptions and three fumble recoveries as a free safety. However, he said his greatest memories of playing football at the Prep were being part of back-to-back CHSFL city title teams in 1989 and 1990. After Prep, Battaglia went on to play his college football at Rutgers University. As a junior, he led the BIG EAST with 58 receptions for 779 yards. But it was his senior season of 1995 that alerted the country’s college football scene to this tight end’s talent. That fall, he led the nation’s tight ends with 69 catches for 894 yds. and 10 touchdowns – which set a single-season Rutgers record. He was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year and became the first-ever consensus First-Team All-American in Scarlet Knights’ program history. Years later, Sports Illustrated would name him as the top college football tight end on the All-Decade Team of the 1990s.

In the 1996 NFL Draft, Battaglia was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals. He spent six seasons in orange and black before playing stints with the Washington Redskins, Pittsburgh Steelers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In his final season in 2003, he played for the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl XXXVII. Coincidentally, the offensive coordinator on that team was Dan Henning, a 1960 St. Francis Prep graduate. After a successful college and professional career, Marco has yet another great memory to cherish. On August 6th, Rutgers unveiled a new $8.5 million dollar Practice Complex, named in his honor. It features two new Kentucky Bluegrass fields equipped with a state-of-the-art drainage and irrigation system

and a separate FieldTurf playing surface. “I’ve played a lot of football in my life,” said Battaglia, who spent eight seasons in the NFL, “and I can honestly tell you, the places I’ve been, my travels in the NFL, the different universities that I’ve been to visiting, this is the best in class by far.” Athletic Director, Pat Hobbs noted the significance of connecting the history of the Rutgers football program with Marco Battaglia’s name on it: “Going back to Marco Battaglia, you saw the effort of one individual on that football field and it’s a message to our team today that everyone has to exert themselves, everyone has to own their own piece of the 100 yards.” Marco is the assistant athletic director for development at Rutgers. His responsibilities include fundraising, athletic development and engaging former Rutgers’ athletes and alumni to get recommitted to the sports program. For the current St. Francis Prep team, Battaglia serves as the perfect example of a local guy who worked extremely hard to achieve his football dreams. George Dillman, SFP Class of 2000, was an employee of Con Edison performing routine electrical maintenance work when he was killed in a job related accident in 2008. His colleagues at Con Ed, together with friends and family members, organized an annual golf outing in his memory. Each year the event proceeds, along with other donations, are directed to the George Dillman ‘00 Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Prep. The May 2017 outing held at Douglaston Golf Course raised $8,000 for the fund and this will be “matched” by Con Edison. Joseph Marziliano ’08 will take over as district manager of Community Board 11. Joe was an employee for Community Board 8 between 2014 and 2016. After that, he took a position as a community liaison for the city’s Department of Health in Queens, where he worked all across the borough—including with CB 11—to connect Queens with health services. When he saw the opening for district manager, he thought that it could be an opportunity to help Queens residents be better connected with local government. “I’m really looking forward to maintaining the really great neighborhoods that we have out here in terms of quality of life, delivery of city services and government transparency,” he said. “It’s really important that people know when and where they can connect with city government to have better city services” he told the Queens Tribune. Good work, Joseph! We applaud your service and dedication to the community.

Brittany Baldwin ‘09 received her MFA from Pratt Institute and BFA from Adelphi University where she received the Hugh A. Wilson Award for Excellence in Abstraction. Solo exhibitions include “Serious Fun” at Pratt Institute and “Brainsugar” at Adelphi University. She has participated in several group exhibitions at Pratt Institute, Con Artist Gallery, Adelphi University, and See Exhibition Space. This past October she completed a mural for the Department of Transportation through their Barrier Beautification initiative. She also hosted a solo show at Adelphi University from late January through mid-March. Excellent work, Brittany!

Justin Guerre ‘14, a junior at LaSalle University, was tabbed with Atlantic 10 accolades after his performances at the Jack Pyrah Invitational at Haverford College. Guerre was named Performer of the Week by La Salle University Athletics. He broke two school records in the 60m and 300m and finished first over 29 other runners in the 300m, shattering the school record with a time of 35.21, which had gone uncontested since 2006. He also placed first in the 60m sprint, with a time of 6.89. Congratulations Justin!

Nick LoPrinzi ‘13 Named Skyline Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year After concluding his career with First Team Skyline AllConference honors, Nicholas LoPrinzi, Jr. ‘13 has been named the Skyline Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year as the league office announced the Scholar-Athletes of the Year for the winter and spring sports in July. LoPrinzi helped St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn) to a 9-9 record in league play and a 14-19 mark overall, suffering eight losses by just one run. The Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award is presented to the first-team All-Conference performer who carries the highest grade point average for the semester in which the student-athlete competes. LoPrinzi was selected as the first-team catcher after batting .308 for the Bears, scoring 23 runs and driving in 29. He concluded his senior campaign on a 17-game reached base safely streak and defensively he committed just one error in 157 chances. The St. Joseph’s College alumnus finished as the program leader in games played and started (154) and second alltime in at bats (525), hits (181) and runs batted in (113). Joseph is the son of Nicholas LoPrinzi, Class of 1987. Congratulations, Nick!

Natalie Diaz, ‘04 was active in the Alvernian Drama Society, the Dance Team, Gymnastics, Cheerleading and the Chamber Choir at Prep. In her senior year she played the role “Sandy” in Prep’s production of Grease. Chamber Choir and the Drama Society were “the two big things that contributed to my performing arts training at Prep” she said. In the spirit of coming back and giving back, Natalie was also served as a guest judge for Prep’s Talent Show this year.

Her background in gymnastics sparked her specialization as an aerialist in silks, hoop/lyra, hammock, and straps. She received bicoastal training at the New England Center for Circus Arts, and Circus Center in San Francisco. Her domestic and international performance locales include: Los Angeles, Canada, Dubai, and throughout New York City. She has performed in regional productions of West Side Story, A Chorus Line, Hairspray and Joseph...Dreamcoat. She was also an anthem singer for the NY Rangers, Mets, Islanders and Nets!

This summer Natalie performed at the Hammerstein Ballroom for Broadway Bares which features 150+ performers, (the majority come from Broadway shows) with all of the proceeds donated to Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS. (The production is in its 27th year, being produced by Jerry Mitchell and directed by Nick Kenkel.)

In her spare time, Natalie enjoys rooting for her favorite sports teams, participating in NYRR races, and is a huge fan of Scottish Terriers.

At a young age, she became active in competitive gymnastics, and later incorporated classical ballet into her repertoire training in the Vaganova method. She later expanded her dance pedigree to include the styles in jazz, hip-hop, and theater through studies at Broadway Dance Center. A true triple-threat, Natalie

2017 Franciscan Spirit Awards

At the Class of 2017 Commencement, Phyllis Gambino-Skody ‘90 was presented with the Franciscan Spirit Award 2017. During her time at the Prep (as both a student and a faculty member), Phyllis has also been the recipient of the Gold Medal in Religious Education (1990) and the Recognition for Educational Excellence (2009). Marcel Avril ‘17 was the student recipient of the Franciscan Spirit Award at the 2017 Commencement. Marcel’s contributions to the Prep community are numerous and varied. He was a National Honor Society student, an active participant in the SFP Talent Show and the “Save Our Planet” Club. He also served as a Eucharistic Minister and participated in many Campus Ministry activities. Marcel served as a mentor to underclassmen and most importantly, his energy, enthusiasm and kindness made him a role model for other students. Perhaps his most prominent role at Prep was as “The Voice” for the morning announcements. Retired faculty member, Rudy Zientarski ‘63 and his son, Rev. Nicholas Zientarski ‘90 dropped by SFP for a visit this past Spring. Prep’s President, Brother Leonard Conway, gave them a tour all of the recent improvements that have been made as part of the Capital Improvement and Modernization Program. They visited the new Music Education Center, the new Science Labs and Classrooms and the new graphics on the East and West Bottom which serve to reinforce our Franciscan values and our Terrier spirit.

Poet, editor and Prep English teacher, Eric Hafker ‘91 has released the second edition of his critically acclaimed poetry book “Bare” via Moving Poetry Press. A review on Digital Journal states, “He is able to paint a vivid picture in the minds of his readers with his verisimilitude, free verse and eloquent verbage.” Congratulations Eric!

On Friday, June 2, 2017, St. John’s University’s College of Professional Studies bestowed the Distinguished Alumni Award upon four special SJU graduates--most notably among them our very own Development Director, Robert T. Angeletti H’11. Bob has served the Prep since 2004. The award serves to recognize and celebrate the many distinguished alumni who have achieved professional excellence. Congratulations Bob!

Former long-time SFP Chaplain, Rev. William F. Sweeney, was appointed Pastor of St. Francis de Sales, Belle Harbor, effective June 30. (He was formerly served as a parochial vicar in the same parish.) The installation ceremony will be held on Sunday, October 29, 2017. Congratulations Father Bill!

SFP Math Department veteran math department faculty member, Robert “Bobby” Guthenberg is a radio personality on the Rock Show at WCWP-LIU-Post Public Radio. (You can listen over the air in northern Nassau County at 88.1 FM or live stream on your computer or smartphone.) Prior to teaching, Bob enjoyed a career in radio and served as the Program Director at WCWP (1967-70) and as a DJ/Producer at WLIR 92.7 FM from 1971-73. Over the past 17 years Bob has promoted many SFP music and drama events on his evening radio show. With a teaching career spanning 42 years, he and his lovely wife, MaryEllen have four children who graduated from Prep: Michael ‘94, Christina ‘98, Ann ‘01, and Kathleen ‘03. (Sadly, Annie lost her battle to Colon Cancer in 2010.) Bob’s grandson, Christian ‘18 is studying at the Prep. And while we have had many faculty/staff members who have enrolled their children and grandchildren at Prep, Bob just may be the first to have children and a grandchild graduate from SFP while still actively serving on the faculty!

James “Jimmy” Lynch ‘99 was named Head Coach of the Prep’s Varisty Basketball Team taking the reigns from legendary coach and NYS High School Basketball Hall of Famer, Tim Leary, SFP Class of 1963, who retired this year. (See story on page 45.) He served as Coach Leary’s assistant for four seasons. Prior to that he coached the Freshmen and JV basketball teams each for five seasons before moving up to serve as a coaching assistant under Coach Leary. Jimmy has been teaching mathematics at Prep for 10 years. He has been happily married for four years. He and his wife, Gianna have three wonderful children. Best of luck, Jimmy! The SFP Varsity Handball Team won the Catholic High School Athletic Association’s New York City Championship for the 15th consecutive time — all 15 years going undefeated —a feat accomplished by no other CHSAA Handball Team. What an amazing record! Additionally, our Junior Varsity Handball Team won their 14th consecutive CHSAA JV City Championship, with this year being the 13th consecutive undefeated season --- a feat accomplished by no other CHSAA JV Handball Team. “Anthony (Tony) Grimm is an excellent coach who brings out the best in our players” a Prep colleague said. Coach Grimm, continuing the winning tradition established by Bro. Alan Zodda, has not only nurtured so much talent, but he has also retained it.
