S T . G EORGE ’ S ON - THE -H ILL FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT 10:30AM HOLY EUCHARIST, SUNDAY, APRIL 7TH 2019
The Sunday Celebration We are a growing Christian community celebrating and enacting the love of God through prayer and service in this neighbourhood. In our celebration today, we will try to be joyful and reflective, playful and reverent, as our thanksgiving for the new life which God gives us through Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. Here is the shape of our service this morning: We gather together as a community of faith. We read the Word of God given to us in the Bible. We respond to the readings through silence, song and preaching. We break the bread and share the cup of wine. We take God’s love out into our lives and the world. Children are full members of our church and we welcome their presence and participation in our worship. If at any point you are unable to stand please feel free to be seated.
Prelude: The Gathering of the Community We gather with song and prayer as the People of God Processional Song of Penitence: Kyrie Eleison (Lord have mercy)
Choir: People: Choir:
Lord Jesus, you plant a grain in the desert, food to nourish your journey. Kyrie eleison … You come now in word and sacrament to strengthen us on our journey.
People:
Kyrie eleison …
Greeting: Presider: Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins. People: God’s mercy endures for ever.
The General Confession: (Lent is the season for sober reflection on the ways in which we fall short of God’s ideal for us. As such it is customary to begin our worship with a penitent heart. If you are able, please kneel) Presider: Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; God welcomes sinners and invites them to God’s table. Let us confess our sins, Confident in God’s forgiveness. All:
Most merciful God, We confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of God’s name. Amen
The Absolution Hymn #179 Tree of Life and Awesome Mystery (As you are able please stand) (During this hymn we will be sprinkled with water as a symbol of God’s forgiveness and our new life in Christ) Tree of Life and awesome mystery, in your death we are reborn; Though you die in all of history, still you rise with every morn, still you rise with every morn. Seed that dies to rise in glory, may we see ourselves in you; If we learn to live your story we may die to rise anew, we may die to rise anew.
We remember truth once spoken, love passed on through act and word; Every person lost and broken wears the body of our Lord, wears the body of our Lord. Gentle Jesus, mighty Spirit, come inflame our hearts anew. We may all your joy inherit if we bear the cross with you, if we bear the cross with you. Christ, you lead and we shall follow, stumbling though our steps may be; One with you in joy and sorrow, we the river, you the sea, we the river, you the sea. God of all our fear and sorrow, God who lives beyond our death, Hold us close through each tomorrow, love as near as every breath, love as near as every breath Prayer of the Day Presider: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Presider: Let us pray. Silence Almighty God, through the waters of baptism your Son has made us children of light. May we ever walk in his light and show forth your glory in the world; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. People: Amen (Please be seated) The Proclamation of the Word First Reading: Isaiah 43.16-21 Reader: A reading from the book of Isaiah Thus says the Lord, who makes a way in the sea, a path in the mighty waters, who brings out chariot and horse, army and warrior; they lie down, they cannot rise,
they are extinguished, quenched like a wick: Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. The wild animals will honour me, the jackals and the ostriches; for I give water in the wilderness, rivers in the desert, to give drink to my chosen people, the people whom I formed for myself so that they might declare my praise. Reader: The word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Psalm 51:1-5,7 (please remain seated)
Choir: Have mercy on me, O God, according to your lov-ing-kindness; * In your great compassion blot out my off-enses. Wash me through and through from my wickedness * And cleanse me from my sin. People: O Lord, hear my prayer… Choir: For I know my trans-gressions, * And my sin is ever be-fore me. Against you only have I sinned * And done what is evil in your sight. People: O Lord, hear my prayer… Choir: And so you are justified when you speak * And upright in your judgment. For behold, you look for truth deep with-in me, * And will make me understand wisdom se-cret-ly. People: O Lord, hear my prayer…
Second Reading: Philippians 3.4b-14 Reader: A reading from the letter of Paul to the Philippians If anyone else has reason to be confident in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, a member of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee, as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. Yet whatever gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ. More than that, I regard everything as loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and I regard them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but one that comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God based on faith. I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in his death, if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead. I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus. Reader: The word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation: (please stand)
Music: We Are Not Alone
Reader: People:
The Lord be with you. And also with you.

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St.John Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ!
The Holy Gospel: John 12.1-8 Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. There they gave a dinner for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at the table with him. Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus’ feet, and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was about to betray him), said, “Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?” (He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the
common purse and used to steal what was put into it.) Jesus said, “Leave her alone. She bought it so that she might keep it for the day of my burial. You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.” Presider: The Gospel of Christ. People: Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ! Homily: The Reverend Canon Dr. Andrew Sheldon The Prayers of the People: (Please stand or kneel as you prefer) Please respond to the petitions by singing “Lord hear our prayer”.
The Peace (Please stand as you are able) Presider: The peace of the Lord be always with you. All: And also with you. The Celebration of the Eucharist We share God’s banquet of love for this family of faith As we sing this hymn, we will pass the plate to collect the offerings of the people. If you are visiting us please do not feel you need to put anything in the plate; you are our guest. We do, however, rely on free-will offerings to fund the good work we do. If you would like to know more about how this is done, please contact one of the clergy. Offertory Hymn: # 436 I Bind unto Myself Today I bind unto myself today the strong name of the Trinity, by invocation of the same, the Three-in-One, and One-in-Three. I bind this day to me forever, by power of faith, Christ's incarnation, his baptism in the Jordan river, his death on cross for my salvation.
His bursting from the spiced tomb, his riding up the heavenly way, his coming at the day of doom, I bind unto myself today. I bind unto myself today the virtues of the star-lit heaven, the glorious sun's life-giving ray, the whiteness of the moon at even, the flashing of the lightning free, the whirling wind's tempestuous shocks, the stable earth, the deep salt sea around the old eternal rocks. I bind unto myself today the power of God to hold and lead, his eye to watch, his might to stay, his ear to hearken to my need, the wisdom of my God to teach, his hand to guide, his shield to ward, the word of God to give me speech, his heavenly host to be my guard. Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me. Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ in quiet, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger. I bind unto myself the name, the strong name of the Trinity, by invocation of the same, the Three-in-One, and One-in-Three, of whom all nature hath creation, eternal Father, Spirit, Word. Praise to the Lord of my salvation; salvation is of Christ the Lord.

Hymn After Communion # 435 Take my life, and let it be Take my life, and let it be consecrated, Lord, to thee; take my moments and my days, let them flow in ceaseless praise. Take my hands, and let them move at the impulse of thy love; take my feet, and let them be swift and purposeful for thee. Take my lips, and let them be filled with messages from thee; take my intellect, and use every power as thou shalt choose. Take my will, and make it thine; it shall be no longer mine; take my heart, it is thine own; it shall be thy royal throne. Take my love: my Lord, I pour at thy feet its treasure store; take myself, and I will be ever, only, all for thee. Prayer After Communion
