The Sunday Celebration We are a growing Christian community celebrating and enacting the love of God through prayer and service in this neighbourhood. In our celebration today, we will try to be joyful and reflective, playful and reverent, as our thanksgiving for the new life which God gives us through Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. Here is the shape of our service this morning: We gather together as a community of faith. We read the Word of God given to us in the Bible. We respond to the readings through silence, song and preaching. We break the bread and share the cup of wine. We take God’s love out into our lives and the world. Children are full members of our church and we welcome their presence and participation in our worship. If at any point you are unable to stand please feel free to be seated.

Prelude: Cantilena

Processional Hymn# 385 Worship the Lord in the Beauty AS YOU ARE ABLE PLEASE STAND. Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; Bow down before him, his glory proclaim; Gold of obedience and incense of lowliness Bring, and adore him: the Lord is his name! Low at his feet lay thy burden of carefulness; High on his heart he will bear it for thee, Comfort thy sorrows, and answer thy prayerfulness, Guiding thy steps as may best for thee be. Fear not to enter his courts in the slenderness Of the poor wealth thou canst reckon as thine; Truth in its beauty and love in its tenderness, These are the offerings to lay on his shrine. These though we bring them in trembling and fearfulness, He will accept for the name that is dear, Mornings of joy give for evenings of tearfulness, Trust for our trembling, and hope for our fear.

Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; Bow down before him, his glory proclaim; Gold of obedience and incense of lowliness bring, and adore him: the Lord is his name! Prayer of the Day The Proclamation of the Word PLEASE BE SEATED First Reading: Malachi 3.1-4 Reader: A reading from the book of Malachi See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight indeed, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap; he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the Lord in righteousness. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years. Reader: The word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Psalm 111:1-6 (please remain seated)

Choir: I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart in the assembly of the upright. Great are the deeds, the deeds of the Lord! They are studied by all, by all who delight in them. People: There is one Lord… Choir: His work is full of majesty of spendor and his righteousness endures forever. He makes his marvelous works to be remembered; The Lord is gracious and full of compassion. People: There is one Lord …

Choir: He gives food to those, to those who fear him; He is mindful of His covenant. He has shown His people His works in giving them the lands of the nations. People: There is one Lord ‌ Second Reading: Hebrews 2.14-18 Reader: A reading from the letter to the Hebrews Since, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. For it is clear that he did not come to help angels, but the descendants of Abraham. Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested. Reader: The word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation:

The Holy Gospel: Luke 2.22-40 Presider: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you.

Music: Traditional South African

Presider: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke All: Verse 2 sung: Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ! (x2) Alleluia (x4) When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord”), and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.” Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, “Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.” And the child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, “This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your own soul too.” There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day. At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him. Presider: The Gospel of Christ. People: Verse 3 sung: Praise be to you Lord Jesus Christ! Carefoote The Apostle’s Creed: (Please stand) Presider: Let us confess the faith of our baptism, as we say, All: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius

Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen The Prayers of the People: (Please stand or kneel as you prefer) Please respond to the petitions by singing “Lord hear our prayer”.

We have not loved you will our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen. Presider:Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. As we sing this hymn, we will pass the plate to collect the offerings of the people. If you are visiting us please do not feel you need to put anything in the plate; you are our guest. We do, however, rely on free-will offerings to fund the good work we do. If you would like to know more about how this is done, please contact one of the clergy. Offertory Hymn: # 380 O Worship the King O worship the King, all glorious above; O gratefully sing his power and his love; Our shield and defender, the Ancient of Days, Pavilioned in splendour and girded with praise. O tell of his might, O sing of his grace, Whose robe is the light, whose canopy space; His chariots of wrath the deep thunder-clouds form, And dark is his path on the wings of the storm. The earth with its store of wonders untold, Almighty, thy power hath founded of old, Hath stablished it fast by a changeless decree, And round it hath cast, like a mantle, the sea. Thy bountiful care what tongue can recite? It breathes in the air, it shines in the light; It streams from the hills, it descends to the plain, And sweetly distils in the dew and the rain. Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail, In thee do we trust, nor find thee to fail; Thy mercies how tender, how firm to the end, Our maker, defender, redeemer, and friend. O measureless Might, ineffable Love, While angels delight to hymn thee above, The humbler creation, though feeble their lays, With true adoration shall sing to thy praise. Prayer Over the Gifts

Eucharistic Prayer (please remain standing)

Presider:Blessed are you, gracious God, …. (the presider will sing one of the proper prefaces) … we raise our voices to proclaim the glory of your name. (We then sing verses 1-3 of the Sanctus following…)

Presider: We give thanks to you, Lord our God, for the goodness and love you have made known to us in creation; in calling Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Saviour and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, a death he freely accepted, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends and said, “Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them and said, “Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” (After the words over the cup and the elevation of the chalice we sing the following…) People: (sing) (Verse 4) Glory be to you O Lord! Glory now and evermore! Hosanna in the highest! Presider: Therefore, Father, according to his command. People:we remember his death, we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming in glory; Presider: and we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts, that they may be the sacrament of the body of Christ and his blood of the new covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we, made acceptable in him, may be sanctified + by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and make them new, and bring us to that city of light where you dwell with all your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, now and for ever. People: (sing) (Verse 5) Glory be to you O Lord! Glory now and evermore! To you for evermore. Amen The Lord’s Prayer BAS Page 211 Presider: And now, as our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray, All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass

against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen The Breaking of the Bread Presider: “I am the bread of life” says the Lord. “Whoever comes to me will never be hungry; whoever believes in me will never thirst” People: Taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are those who trust in him! Song for the Breaking of Bread: Lamb of God

Presider: The gifts of God for the people of God. People: Thanks be to God. The Communion All who are baptized are welcome to receive the sacrament of communion in the Anglican Church; those who are not yet baptized are encouraged to come forward to the altar for a blessing – simply fold your arms across your chest as an indication of your desire for a blessing. This invitation is extended to all – children and infants included. Music During Communion: Hymn # 439 Blest Are the Pure in Heart Blest are the pure in heart, for they shall see our God; The secret of the Lord is theirs, their soul is Christ's abode. The Lord, who left the heavens our life and peace to bring, To dwell in lowliness with us, our pattern and our King, Still to the lowly soul his presence doth impart, And for a dwelling and a throne chooseth the pure in heart.

Lord, we thy presence seek; may ours this blessing be: Give us a pure and lowly heart, a temple fit for thee. Anthem: Lord, give your peace throughout our earthly life

H. Purcell

Prayer After Communion PLEASE STAND AS YOU ARE ABLE Doxology Presider: Glory to God, All: whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen. The Blessing I Remember: Peter Helston Recessional Hymn # 375 At the Name of Jesus At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, Every tongue confess him King of glory now; 'tis his Father's pleasure we should call him Lord, Who from the beginning was the mighty Word. Humbled for a season to receive a name From the lips of sinners unto whom he came, Faithfully he bore it, spotless to the last, Brought it back victorious when from death he passed. Name him, Christians, name him, with love strong as death, But with awe and wonder, and with bated breath; He is God the Saviour, he is Christ the Lord, Ever to be worshipped, trusted, and adored. In your hearts enthrone him; there let him subdue All that is not holy, all that is not true; Crown him as your Saviour in temptation's hour; Let his will enfold you in its light and power.

Christians, this Lord Jesus shall return again, With his Father's glory, with his angel train; For all wreaths of empire meet upon his brow, And our hearts confess him King of glory now. Dismissal Presider: Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Postlude: Fugue in E flat major
