ST. G EORGE ’ S ON - THE -H ILL Remembrance Day Sunday 10:30AM HOLY EUCHARIST, SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 11TH 2018

The Sunday Celebration We are a growing Christian community celebrating and enacting the love of God through prayer and service in this neighbourhood. In our celebration today, we will try to be joyful and reflective, playful and reverent, as our thanksgiving for the new life which God gives us through Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. Here is the shape of our service this morning: We gather together as a community of faith. We read the Word of God given to us in the Bible. We respond to the readings through silence, song and preaching. We break the bread and share the cup of wine. We take God’s love out into our lives and the world. Children are full members of our church and we welcome their presence and participation in our worship. If at any point you are unable to stand please feel free to be seated.

Organ Prelude: Air from Heroic Suite

The Gathering of the Community We gather with song and prayer as the People of God The children begin downstairs, and will rejoin their families for communion.

Processional Hymn: # 629 Jesus, Thy Blood and Righteousness Jesus, thy blood and righteousness My beauty are, my glorious dress; 'Midst flaming worlds, in these arrayed, With joy shall I lift up my head. Bold shall I stand in thy great day; For who aught to my charge shall lay? Fully absolved through these I am From sin and fear, from guilt and shame. Jesus, be endless praise to thee, Whose boundless mercy hath for me-For me a full atonement made, An everlasting ransom paid. O let the dead now hear thy voice; Now bid thy banished ones rejoice; Their beauty this, their glorious dress, Jesus, thy blood and righteousness.

The Apostolic Greeting Presider: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. People: And also with you. Presider: Almighty God, People: to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Song of Praise: Gloria in Excelsis

Prayer of the Day The Proclamation of the Word of God (please be seated) First Reading: Ruth 3.1-5, 4.13-17 A reading from the book of Ruth. Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, “My daughter, I need to seek some security for you, so that it may be well with you. Now here is our kinsman Boaz, with whose young women you have been working. See, he is

winnowing barley tonight at the threshing floor. Now wash and anoint yourself, and put on your best clothes and go down to the threshing floor; but do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking. When he lies down, observe the place where he lies; then, go and uncover his feet and lie down; and he will tell you what to do.” She said to her, “All that you tell me I will do.” So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. When they came together, the Lord made her conceive, and she bore a son. Then the women said to Naomi, “Blessed be the Lord, who has not left you this day without next-of-kin; and may his name be renowned in Israel! He shall be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age; for your daughter-in-law who loves you, who is more to you than seven sons, has borne him.” Then Naomi took the child and laid him in her bosom, and became his nurse. The women of the neighbourhood gave him a name, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi.” They named him Obed; he became the father of Jesse, the father of David. Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! (Please keep a period of silence for reflection) Psalm 34 (remain seated)

Cantor: Lord you have been our refuge, from one generation to another, before the mountains were brought forth, earth was born from age to age, you are God. People: How blessed are the poor… Cantor: You turn us back to the dust and say, `Go back, O child of earth, For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past and like a watch in the night. People: How blessed are the poor…

Cantor: You sweep us away like a dream, we fade away like the grass, in the morning it is green and flourishes, in the evening it is dried up and withered. People: How blessed are the poor‌ Second Reading: Hebrews 9.24-28 A reading from the letter to the Hebrews For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made by human hands, a mere copy of the true one, but he entered into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. Nor was it to offer himself again and again, as the high priest enters the Holy Place year after year with blood that is not his own; for then he would have had to suffer again and again since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the age to remove sin by the sacrifice of himself. And just as it is appointed for mortals to die once, and after that the judgement, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. Reader: The Word of the Lord People: Thanks be to God (Please keep a period of silence for reflection.) Gospel Acclamation: (Please stand)

Holy Gospel: Mark 12.38-44 Reader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Reader: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark People: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ! As Jesus taught, he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honour at banquets! They

devour widows’ houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.” He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.” Reader: The Gospel of Christ People: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ!

John McCrae, May 1915

The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. Praise to the Lord, who o'er all things so wondrously reigneth, Shelters thee under his wings, yea, so gently sustaineth: Hast thou not seen how thy entreaties have been Granted in what he ordaineth? Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee; Surely his goodness and mercy here daily attend thee: Ponder anew what the Almighty can do, If with his love he befriend thee. Praise to the Lord, who, when tempests their warfare are waging, Who, when the elements madly around thee are raging, Biddeth them cease, turneth their fury to peace, Whirlwinds and waters assuaging. Praise to the Lord, who when darkness of sin is abounding, Who when the godless do triumph, all virtue confounding, Sheddeth his light, chaseth the horrors of night, Saints with his mercy surrounding.

Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him! All that hath life and breath come now with praises before him! Let the Amen sound from his people again: Gladly for aye we adore him. Prayer Over the Gifts Eucharistic Prayer 3

Presider: Blessed are you, gracious God, …. (the presider will sing one of the proper prefaces) … we raise our voices to proclaim the glory of your name. (We then sing verses 1-3 of the Sanctus following…)

Presider: We give thanks to you, Lord our God, for the goodness and love you have made known to us in creation; in calling Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Saviour and

Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, a death he freely accepted, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends and said, “Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them and said, “Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” (After the words over the cup and the elevation of the chalice we sing the following…) People: (sing 4th verse) Glory, glory, glory! Glory be to you O Lord! Glory, glory, glory! Hosanna in the highest! Presider: Therefore, Father, according to his command. People: we remember his death, we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming in glory; Presider: and we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts, that they may be the sacrament of the body of Christ and his blood of the new covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we, made acceptable in him, may be sanctified + by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and make them new, and bring us to that city of light where you dwell with all your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, now and for ever. People: (sing 5th verse) Glory, glory, glory! Glory be to you O Lord! Glory, glory, glory! Amen, Amen!

The Lord’s Prayer Presider: And now, as our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray, All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread Presider: We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All: We, being many, are one body, for we all share in the one bread. Song for the Breaking of Bread: Bread of Life

Choir: As we proclaim your death, as we recall your life, we remember your promise to return again. People: Bread of life, hope of the world … Choir: The bread we break and share was scattered once as grain: just as now it is gathered, make your people one. People: Bread of life, hope of the world … Choir: We eat this living bread, we drink this saving cup: sign of hope in our broken world, source of lasting love. People: Bread of life, hope of the world … Choir: Hold us in unity, in love for all to see; that the world may believe in you, God of all who love. People:Bread of life, hope of the world … Choir: You are the bread of peace, you are the wine of joy, Broken now for your people, poured in endless love. People:Bread of life, hope of the world …

Presider: The gifts of God for the people of God. People: Thanks be to God. (please be seated) The Communion: All who are baptized are welcome to receive Holy Communion. Those not receiving communion are welcome to receive a blessing. Please cross your hands over your chest to indicate this to the priest. Communicants who do not wish to drink from the chalice should not dip the bread into the cup. Instead, after eating the bread, cross your hands over your chest as the chalice bearer passes by, or make a sign of reverence by gently touching the base of the cup. Gluten free wafers are available from the acolyte standing at the center of the altar rail. Those drinking from the cup are asked to assist the minister by grasping it at the base and guiding it to their lips. Music during Communion: Hymn: # 435 Take My Life, and Let It Be Take my life, and let it be consecrated, Lord, to thee; Take my moments and my days, let them flow in ceaseless praise. Take my hands, and let them move at the impulse of thy love; Take my feet, and let them be swift and purposeful for thee. Take my lips, and let them be filled with messages from thee; Take my intellect, and use every power as thou shalt choose. Take my will, and make it thine; it shall be no longer mine; Take my heart, it is thine own; it shall be thy royal throne. Take my love: my Lord, I pour at thy feet its treasure store; Take myself, and I will be ever, only, all for thee. Choir Anthem: The Lord’s my Shepherd Cantor:

Pie Jesu

Prayer after Communion (Please stand) Doxology: Presider: Glory to God, People: whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, forever and ever. Amen. The Blessing Announcements Recessional Hymn: # 388 Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken (Please join in singing) Glorious things of thee are spoken, Zion, city of our God; He whose word cannot be broken formed thee for his own abode. On the rock of ages founded, what can shake thy sure repose? With salvation's walls surrounded, thou mayest smile at all thy foes. See! The streams of living waters, springing from eternal love, Well supply thy sons and daughters and all fear of want remove. Who can faint, when such a river ever flows their thirst to assuage? Grace, which like the Lord, the giver, never fails from age to age? Round each habitation hovering, see the cloud and fire appear For a glory and a covering--showing that the Lord is near. Thus they march, the pillar leading, light by night and shade by day; Daily on the manna feeding which God gives them when they pray. Saviour, if of Zion's city I through grace a member am, Let the world deride or pity, I will glory in thy name. Fading is the world's best pleasure, all its boasted pomp and show: Solid joys and lasting treasure none but Zion's children know. The Dismissal: Presider: Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. People: Thanks be to God!
