The Sunday Celebration We are a growing Christian community celebrating and enacting the love of God through prayer and service in this neighbourhood. In our celebration today, we will try to be joyful and reflective, playful and reverent, as our thanksgiving for the new life which God gives us through Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. Here is the shape of our service this morning: We gather together as a community of faith. We read the Word of God given to us in the Bible. We respond to the readings through silence, song and preaching. We break the bread and share the cup of wine. We take God’s love out into our lives and the world. Children are full members of our church and we welcome their presence and participation in our worship. If at any point you are unable to stand please feel free to be seated.

Organ Prelude: Sonata in D minor, op 42

A. Guilmant

The Gathering of the Community We gather with song and prayer as the People of God The children begin downstairs, and will rejoin their families for communion. Processional Hymn: # 379 Rejoice, the Lord Is King Rejoice, the Lord is King! Your Lord and King adore! Rejoice, give thanks and sing and triumph evermore. Lift up your heart, lift up your voice: rejoice; again I say, rejoice! Jesus the Saviour reigns, the God of truth and love; When he had purged our stains, he took his seat above. Lift up your heart, lift up your voice: rejoice; again I say, rejoice! His kingdom cannot fail; he rules o'er earth and heaven; The keys of death and hell are to our Jesus given. Lift up your heart, lift up your voice: rejoice; again I say, rejoice! He sits at God's right hand till all his foes submit, And bow to his command, and fall beneath his feet. Lift up your heart, lift up your voice: rejoice; again I say, rejoice! Rejoice in glorious hope; Jesus, the judge, shall come And take his servants up to their eternal home. We soon shall hear the archangel's voice; the trump of God shall sound, rejoice!

The Apostolic Greeting Presider: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. People: And also with you. Presider: Almighty God, People: to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden. Song of Praise: Gloria in Excelsis

Prayer of the Day The Proclamation of the Word of God (please be seated) First Reading: 2 Samuel 23.1-7 A reading from the second book of Samuel

Now these are the last words of David: The oracle of David, son of Jesse, the oracle of the man whom God exalted, the anointed of the God of Jacob, the favourite of the Strong One of Israel: The spirit of the Lord speaks through me, his word is upon my tongue. The God of Israel has spoken, the Rock of Israel has said to me: One who rules over people justly, ruling in the fear of God, is like the light of morning, like the sun rising on a cloudless morning, gleaming from the rain on the grassy land. Is not my house like this with God? For he has made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things and secure. Will he not cause to prosper all my help and my desire? But the godless are all like thorns that are thrown away; for they cannot be picked up with the hand; to touch them one uses an iron bar or the shaft of a spear. And they are entirely consumed in fire on the spot. Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! (Please keep a period of silence for reflection) Psalm 100 (remain seated)

Cantor: Be joyful in the Lord, all you lands, serve the Lord with gladness, come before His presence with a song. Know this: the Lord himself is God. People: How blessed are the poor‌ Cantor: He himself has made us, and we are his, we are his people and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving: go into courts with praise. People: How blessed are the poor‌

Cantor: Give thanks to Him and call upon His name, for the Lord is good, his mercy is everlasting, and his faithfulness endures from age to age. People: How blessed are the poor… Second Reading: Revelation 1:4b-8 A reading from the revelation to John Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, and made us to be a kingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Look! He is coming with the clouds; every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail. So it is to be. Amen. “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. Reader: The Word of the Lord People: Thanks be to God (Please keep a period of silence for reflection.) Gospel Acclamation: (Please stand)

Holy Gospel: John 18:33-37 Reader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Reader: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John People: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ! Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus answered, “Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?” Pilate replied, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your

own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?” Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.” Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” Reader: The Gospel of Christ People: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ!

Sermon: The Reverend Michelle Childs-Ward (After the sermon, please keep a period of silence for reflection.) The Prayers of the People: Please respond to the petitions by singing “hear us Lord of glory.”

The Peace: (Please stand) Presider: The peace of the Lord be always with you! People: And also with you! The Celebration of the Eucharist We share God’s banquet of love for this community of faith Offertory Hymn: # 436 I Bind Unto Myself Today (Please join in singing) I bind unto myself today, the strong name of the Trinity, By invocation of the same, the Three-in-One, and One-in-Three.

I bind this day to me forever, by power of faith, Christ's incarnation, His baptism in the Jordan river, his death on cross for my salvation. His bursting from the spiced tomb, his riding up the heavenly way, His coming at the day of doom, I bind unto myself today. I bind unto myself today the virtues of the star-lit heaven, The glorious sun's life-giving ray, the whiteness of the moon at even, The flashing of the lightning free, the whirling wind's tempestuous shocks, The stable earth, the deep salt sea around the old eternal rocks. I bind unto myself today the power of God to hold and lead, His eye to watch, his might to stay, his ear to hearken to my need, The wisdom of my God to teach, his hand to guide, his shield to ward, The word of God to give me speech, his heavenly host to be my guard. Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me. Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ in quiet, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger. I bind unto myself the name, the strong name of the Trinity, By invocation of the same, the Three-in-One, and One-in-Three, Of whom all nature hath creation, eternal Father, Spirit, Word. Praise to the Lord of my salvation; salvation is of Christ the Lord. Prayer Over the Gifts Eucharistic Prayer 3

Presider: Blessed are you, gracious God, …. (the presider will sing one of the proper prefaces) … we raise our voices to proclaim the glory of your name. (We then sing verses 1-3 of the Sanctus following…)

Presider: We give thanks to you, Lord our God, for the goodness and love you have made known to us in creation; in calling Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Saviour and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, a death he freely accepted, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends and said, “Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them and said, “Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

(After the words over the cup and the elevation of the chalice we sing the following‌) People: (sing 4th verse) Glory, glory, glory! Glory be to you O Lord! Glory, glory, glory! Hosanna in the highest! Presider: Therefore, Father, according to his command. People: we remember his death, we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming in glory; Presider: and we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts, that they may be the sacrament of the body of Christ and his blood of the new covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we, made acceptable in him, may be sanctified + by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and make them new, and bring us to that city of light where you dwell with all your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, now and for ever. People: (sing 5th verse) Glory, glory, glory! Glory be to you O Lord! Glory, glory, glory! Amen, Amen! The Lord’s Prayer Presider: And now, as our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray, All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread Presider: We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All: We, being many, are one body, for we all share in the one bread.

Song for the Breaking of Bread: Bread of Life

Choir: As we proclaim your death, as we recall your life, we remember your promise to return again. People: Bread of life, hope of the world … Choir: The bread we break and share was scattered once as grain: just as now it is gathered, make your people one. People: Bread of life, hope of the world … Choir: We eat this living bread, we drink this saving cup: sign of hope in our broken world, source of lasting love. People: Bread of life, hope of the world … Choir: Hold us in unity, in love for all to see; that the world may believe in you, God of all who love. People: Bread of life, hope of the world … Choir: You are the bread of peace, you are the wine of joy, Broken now for your people, poured in endless love. People: Bread of life, hope of the world … Presider: The gifts of God for the people of God. People: Thanks be to God. (please be seated) The Communion: All who are baptized are welcome to receive Holy Communion. Those not receiving communion are welcome to receive a blessing. Please cross your hands over your chest to indicate this to the priest. Communicants who do not wish to drink from the chalice should not dip the bread into the cup. Instead, after eating the bread, cross your hands over your chest as the chalice bearer passes by, or make a sign of reverence by gently touching the base of the cup.

Gluten free wafers are available from the acolyte standing at the center of the altar rail. Those drinking from the cup are asked to assist the minister by grasping it at the base and guiding it to their lips. Music during Communion: Hymn: # 375 At the Name of Jesus At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, Every tongue confess him King of glory now; 'tis his Father's pleasure we should call him Lord, Who from the beginning was the mighty Word. Humbled for a season to receive a name From the lips of sinners unto whom he came, Faithfully he bore it, spotless to the last, Brought it back victorious when from death he passed. Name him, Christians, name him, with love strong as death, But with awe and wonder, and with bated breath; He is God the Saviour, he is Christ the Lord, Ever to be worshipped, trusted, and adored. In your hearts enthrone him; there let him subdue All that is not holy, all that is not true; Crown him as your Saviour in temptation's hour; Let his will enfold you in its light and power. Christians, this Lord Jesus shall return again, With his Father's glory, with his angel train; For all wreaths of empire meet upon his brow, And our hearts confess him King of glory now. Choir Anthem: Eternal Father Prayer after Communion (Please stand) Doxology: Presider: Glory to God,

G. Holst

People: whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, forever and ever. Amen. The Blessing Announcements Recessional Hymn: # 380 O Worship the King (Please join in singing) O worship the King, all glorious above; O gratefully sing his power and his love; Our shield and defender, the Ancient of Days, Pavilioned in splendour and girded with praise. O tell of his might, O sing of his grace, Whose robe is the light, whose canopy space; His chariots of wrath the deep thunder-clouds form, And dark is his path on the wings of the storm. The earth with its store of wonders untold, Almighty, thy power hath founded of old, Hath stablished it fast by a changeless decree, And round it hath cast, like a mantle, the sea. Thy bountiful care what tongue can recite? It breathes in the air, it shines in the light; It streams from the hills, it descends to the plain, And sweetly distils in the dew and the rain. Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail, In thee do we trust, nor find thee to fail; Thy mercies how tender, how firm to the end, Our maker, defender, redeemer, and friend. O measureless Might, ineffable Love, While angels delight to hymn thee above, The humbler creation, though feeble their lays, With true adoration shall sing to thy praise.

The Dismissal: Presider: Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! Organ Postlude: Grand Chœur
