The Sunday Celebration We are a growing Christian community celebrating and enacting the love of God through prayer and service in this neighbourhood. In our celebration today, we will try to be joyful and reflective, playful and reverent, as our thanksgiving for the new life which God gives us through Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. Here is the shape of our service this morning: We gather together as a community of faith. We read the Word of God given to us in the Bible. We respond to the readings through silence, song and preaching. We break the bread and share the cup of wine. We take God’s love out into our lives and the world. Children are full members of our church and we welcome their presence and participation in our worship. If at any point you are unable to stand please feel free to be seated.

Organ Prelude: Nimrod

E.Elgar

The Gathering of the Community We gather with song and prayer as the People of God The children begin downstairs, and will rejoin their families for communion. Processional Hymn: # 278 Jerusalem the Golden Jerusalem the golden, with milk and honey blessed, Beneath thy contemplation sink heart and voice oppressed. I know not, O I know not what joys await us there, What radiancy of glory, what bliss beyond compare. They stand, those halls of Sion, all jubilant with song, And bright with many an angel and all the martyr throng. The Prince is ever in them, the daylight is serene, The pastures of the blessed are decked in glorious sheen. There is the throne of David, and there, from care released, The shout of them that triumph, the song of them that feast; And they who with their leader have conquered in the fight, Forever and forever are clad in robes of white. O sweet and blessed country, the home of God's elect; O dear and future vision that eager hearts expect: Even now by faith we see thee, even here thy walls discern; To thee our thoughts are kindled; for thee our spirits yearn.

The Apostolic Greeting Presider: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. People: And also with you. Presider: Almighty God, People: to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Song of Praise: Gloria in Excelsis

Prayer of the Day The Proclamation of the Word of God (please be seated) First Reading: Revelation 21.1-6a A reading from the book of Revelation. Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned

for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away.” And the one who was seated on the throne said, “See, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.” Then he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life. Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! (Please keep a period of silence for reflection) Psalm 34 (remain seated)

Cantor: I will bless the Lord at all times, his praise shall ever be in my mouth I will glory in the Lord, let the humble hear and rejoice. People: How blessed are the poor… Cantor: Proclaim with me the greatness of the Lord, let us exalt his Name together, I then sought the Lord and he answered me, and delivered me out of all my terror. People: How blessed are the poor… Cantor: Look upon him and be radiant, and let not your faces be ashamed. I called in my affliction and the Lord heard me, and he saved me from all my troubles. People: How blessed are the poor…

Second Reading: Colossians 1.9-14 A reading from the letter to the Colossians For this reason, since the day we heard it, we have not ceased praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you may lead lives worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, as you bear fruit in every good work and as you grow in the knowledge of God. May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Reader: The Word of the Lord People: Thanks be to God (Please keep a period of silence for reflection.) Gospel Acclamation: (Please stand)

Holy Gospel: John 11.32-44 Reader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Reader: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John People: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ! When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?” Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it.

Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days.” Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, “Father, I thank you for having heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me.” When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.” Reader: The Gospel of Christ People: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ!

Sermon: The Reverend Dr. P.J. Carefoote (After the sermon, please keep a period of silence for reflection.) The Apostle’s Creed: (Please stand) Presider: Let us confess the faith of our baptism, as we say, All: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen The Prayers of the People: Please respond to the petitions by singing “hear us Lord of glory.”

Confession and Absolution Presider: Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; God welcomes sinners and invites them to God’s table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God’s forgiveness. (If you are able, please kneel) Presider: Most merciful God, All: We confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of God’s name. Amen The Absolution The Peace: (Please stand) Presider: The peace of the Lord be always with you! People: And also with you! The Celebration of the Eucharist We share God’s banquet of love for this community of faith Offertory Hymn: # 385 Worship the Lord in the Beauty of Holiness (Please join in singing) Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; Bow down before him, his glory proclaim; Gold of obedience and incense of lowliness Bring, and adore him: the Lord is his name! Low at his feet lay thy burden of carefulness; High on his heart he will bear it for thee, Comfort thy sorrows, and answer thy prayerfulness, Guiding thy steps as may best for thee be. Fear not to enter his courts in the slenderness Of the poor wealth thou canst reckon as thine; Truth in its beauty and love in its tenderness, These are the offerings to lay on his shrine.

These though we bring them in trembling and fearfulness, He will accept for the name that is dear, Mornings of joy give for evenings of tearfulness, Trust for our trembling, and hope for our fear. Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; Bow down before him, his glory proclaim; Gold of obedience and incense of lowliness Bring, and adore him: the Lord is his name! Prayer Over the Gifts Eucharistic Prayer 3

Presider: Blessed are you, gracious God, …. (the presider will sing one of the proper prefaces) … we raise our voices to proclaim the glory of your name. (We then sing verses 1-3 of the Sanctus following…)

Presider: We give thanks to you, Lord our God, for the goodness and love you have made known to us in creation; in calling Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Saviour and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, a death he freely accepted, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends and said, “Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them and said, “Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” (After the words over the cup and the elevation of the chalice we sing the following…) People: (sing 4th verse) Glory, glory, glory! Glory be to you O Lord! Glory, glory, glory! Hosanna in the highest! Presider: Therefore, Father, according to his command. People: we remember his death, we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming in glory; Presider: and we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts, that they may be the sacrament of the body of Christ and his blood of the new covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we, made acceptable in him, may be sanctified + by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and make them new, and bring us to that city of light where you dwell with all your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, now and for ever.

People: (sing 5th verse) Glory, glory, glory! Glory be to you O Lord! Glory, glory, glory! Amen, Amen! The Lord’s Prayer Presider: And now, as our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray, All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread Presider: We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All: We, being many, are one body, for we all share in the one bread. Song for the Breaking of Bread: Bread of Life

Choir: As we proclaim your death, as we recall your life, we remember your promise to return again. People: Bread of life, hope of the world … Choir: The bread we break and share was scattered once as grain: just as now it is gathered, make your people one. People: Bread of life, hope of the world … Choir: We eat this living bread, we drink this saving cup: sign of hope in our broken world, source of lasting love. People: Bread of life, hope of the world … Choir: Hold us in unity, in love for all to see; that the world may believe in you, God of all who love. People: Bread of life, hope of the world … Choir: You are the bread of peace, you are the wine of joy, Broken now for your people, poured in endless love.

People: Bread of life, hope of the world ‌ Presider: The gifts of God for the people of God. People: Thanks be to God. (please be seated) The Communion: All who are baptized are welcome to receive Holy Communion. Those not receiving communion are welcome to receive a blessing. Please cross your hands over your chest to indicate this to the priest. Communicants who do not wish to drink from the chalice should not dip the bread into the cup. Instead, after eating the bread, cross your hands over your chest as the chalice bearer passes by, or make a sign of reverence by gently touching the base of the cup. Gluten free wafers are available from the acolyte standing at the center of the altar rail. Those drinking from the cup are asked to assist the minister by grasping it at the base and guiding it to their lips. Music during Communion: Hymn: # 439 Blest Are the Pure in Heart Blest are the pure in heart, for they shall see our God; The secret of the Lord is theirs, their soul is Christ's abode. The Lord, who left the heavens our life and peace to bring, To dwell in lowliness with us, our pattern and our King, Still to the lowly soul his presence doth impart, And for a dwelling and a throne chooseth the pure in heart. Lord, we thy presence seek; may ours this blessing be: Give us a pure and lowly heart, a temple fit for thee. Congregation/Choir: #279 Lo! Round the Throne, a Glorious Band Lo! Round the throne, a glorious band, the saints in countless myriads stand, Of every tongue redeemed to God, arrayed in garments washed in blood. Alleluia!

Through tribulation great, they came, they bore the cross, despised the shame; From all their labours now they rest, in God's eternal glory blest. Alleluia! They see their Saviour face to face, and sing the triumphs of God's grace; And day and night with ceaseless praise, to Christ their loud thanksgiving raise: Alleluia! "Worthy the Lamb, for sinners slain, through endless years to live and reign; Thou hast redeemed us by thy blood and made us royal priests to God." Alleluia! Choir Anthem: Ubi Caritas

O may thy soldiers, faithful, true, and bold, Fight as the saints who nobly fought of old, And win with them the victor's crown of gold. Alleluia! Alleluia! O blest communion, fellowship divine!
