The Sunday Celebration We are a growing Christian community celebrating and enacting the love of God through prayer and service in this neighbourhood. In our celebration today, we will try to be joyful and reflective, playful and reverent, as our thanksgiving for the new life which God gives us through Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. Here is the shape of our service this morning: We gather together as a community of faith. We read the Word of God given to us in the Bible. We respond to the readings through silence, song and preaching. We break the bread and share the cup of wine. We take God’s love out into our lives and the world. Children are full members of our church and we welcome their presence and participation in our worship. If at any point you are unable to stand please feel free to be seated.

Prayer of the Day The Proclamation of the Word of God (please be seated) First Reading: Job 38.1-7, 34-41 A reading from the book of Job. Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind: “Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall declare to me. Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements – surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy?” “Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, so that a flood of waters may cover you? Can you send forth lightnings, so that they may go and say to you, ‘Here we are’? Who

has put wisdom in the inward parts, or given understanding to the mind? Who has the wisdom to number the clouds? Or who can tilt the waterskins of the heavens, when the dust runs into a mass and the clods cling together? “Can you hunt the prey for the lion, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions, when they crouch in their dens, or lie in wait in their covert? Who provides for the raven its prey, when its young ones cry to God, and wander about for lack of food? Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! (Please keep a period of silence for reflection) Psalm 78 (remain seated)

Cantor: Hear my teaching, O my people; incline your ears to the words of my mouth. I will open my mouth in a parable; I will declare the mysteries of ancient times. People: In your steadfast love, O Lord … Cantor: That which we have heard and known, and what our forefathers have told us we will not hide from our children. We will recount to generations to come the praiseworthy deeds and the power of the Lord, and the wonderful works He has done. People: In your steadfast love, O Lord … Cantor: He gave his decrees to Jacob and established a law for Israel, which he commanded them to teach their children; that the generations to come might know and the children yet unborn that they in turn might tell it to their children. People: In your steadfast love, O Lord … Second Reading: Hebrews 5:1-10 A reading from the letter to the Hebrews

Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is subject to weakness; and because of this he must offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not presume to take this honour, but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”; as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.” In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Mel-chizedek. Reader: The Word of the Lord People: Thanks be to God (Please keep a period of silence for reflection.) Gospel Acclamation: (Please stand)

Holy Gospel: Mark 10:35-45 Reader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Reader: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark People: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ! James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to Jesus and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” And he said to them, “What is it you want me to do for you?” And they said to him, “Grant us

to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” They replied, “We are able.” Then Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, “You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.” Reader: The Gospel of Christ People: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ!

Sermon: The Reverend Canon Dr. Andrew Sheldon (After the sermon, please keep a period of silence for reflection.) The Apostle’s Creed: (Please stand) Presider: Let us confess the faith of our baptism, as we say, All: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven,and is seated at the right hand of the Father He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

The Prayers of the People: Please respond to the petitions by singing “hear us Lord of glory.”

Confession and Absolution Presider: Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; God welcomes sinners and invites them to God’s table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God’s forgiveness. (If you are able, please kneel) Presider: Most merciful God, All: We confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of God’s name. Amen The Absolution The Peace: (Please stand) Presider: The peace of the Lord be always with you! People: And also with you! His the sceptre, his the throne; Alleluia! His the triumph, his the victory alone. Hark! The songs of peaceful Zion thunder like a mighty flood; Jesus, out of every nation, hath redeemed us by his blood.

Alleluia! Not as orphans are we left in sorrow now; Alleluia! He is near us, faith believes, nor questions how. Though the cloud from sight received him, when the forty days were o'er, Shall our hearts forget his promise, "I am with you evermore"? Alleluia! Bread of heaven, thou on earth our food, our stay; Alleluia! here the sinful flee to thee from day to day; Intercessor, Friend of sinners, earth's Redeemer, plead for me, Where the songs of all the sinless sweep across the crystal sea. Alleluia! King eternal, thee the Lord of lords we own; Alleluia! born of Mary, earth thy footstool, heaven thy throne. Thou within the veil hast entered, robed in flesh, our great high priest; Thou on earth both priest and victim in the Eucharistic feast. Alleluia! Sing to Jesus! His the sceptre, his the throne; Alleluia! his the triumph, his the victory alone. Hark! The songs of peaceful Zion thunder like a mighty flood; Jesus, out of every nation hath redeemed us by his blood. Prayer Over the Gifts Eucharistic Prayer 3

Presider: Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of heaven and earth; by water and the Holy Spirit you have made us a holy people in Jesus Christ our Lord: you renew that mystery in bread and wine and nourish us, to show forth your glory in all the world. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the holy people who have served you in every age, we raise our voices to proclaim the glory of your name. (We then sing verses 1-3 of the Sanctus following‌)

Presider: We give thanks to you, Lord our God, for the goodness and love you have made known to us in creation; in calling Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Saviour and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, a death he freely accepted, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends and said, “Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them and said, “Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” (After the words over the cup and the elevation of the chalice we sing the following…) People: (sing 4th verse) Glory, glory, glory! Glory be to you O Lord! Glory, glory, glory! Hosanna in the highest! Presider: Therefore, Father, according to his command. People: we remember his death, we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming in glory;

Presider: and we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts, that they may be the sacrament of the body of Christ and his blood of the new covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we, made acceptable in him, may be sanctified + by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and make them new, and bring us to that city of light where you dwell with all your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, now and for ever. People: (sing 5th verse) Glory, glory, glory! Glory be to you O Lord! Glory, glory, glory! Amen, Amen! The Lord’s Prayer Presider: And now, as our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray, All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread Presider: We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All: We, being many, are one body, for we all share in the one bread. Song for the Breaking of Bread: Bread of Life

Choir: As we proclaim your death, as we recall your life, we remember your promise to return again. People: Bread of life, hope of the world ‌

Choir: The bread we break and share was scattered once as grain: just as now it is gathered, make your people one. People: Bread of life, hope of the world … Choir: We eat this living bread, we drink this saving cup: sign of hope in our broken world, source of lasting love. People: Bread of life, hope of the world … Choir: Hold us in unity, in love for all to see; that the world may believe in you, God of all who love. People: Bread of life, hope of the world … Choir: You are the bread of peace, you are the wine of joy, Broken now for your people, poured in endless love. People:Bread of life, hope of the world … Presider: The gifts of God for the people of God. People: Thanks be to God. (please be seated) The Communion: All who are baptized are welcome to receive Holy Communion. Those not receiving communion are welcome to receive a blessing. Please cross your hands over your chest to indicate this to the priest. Communicants who do not wish to drink from the chalice should not dip the bread into the cup. Instead, after eating the bread, cross your hands over your chest as the chalice bearer passes by, or make a sign of reverence by gently touching the base of the cup. Gluten free wafers are available from the acolyte standing at the center of the altar rail. Those drinking from the cup are asked to assist the minister by grasping it at the base and guiding it to their lips. Music during Communion: Hymn: # 500 Sister, Let Me Be Your Servant Sister, let me be your servant, let me be as Christ to you; Pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant too. We are pilgrims on a journey, fellow travellers on the road; We are here to help each other walk the mile and bear the load.

I will hold the Christ-light for you in the night-time of your fear; I will hold my hand out to you, speak the peace you long to hear. I will weep when you are weeping; when you laugh I'll laugh with you. I will share your joy and sorrow till we've seen this journey through. When we sing to God in heaven, we shall find such harmony, Born of all we've known together of Christ's love and agony. Brother, let me be your servant, let me be as Christ to you; Pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant too. Choir Anthem: Glory to Thee, my God, this night
