Campus Ministry at SJA

Campus Ministry at Saint Joseph Academy owes all its success to the prayer, intercession, and hard work of a few holy men and women. We name some of them every time we pray: Mary, Our Good Mother, Saint Marcellin Champagnat, and Saint Joseph These three saints are remarkable examples of who we can be when we open ourselves up to God's call, respond boldly, and commit to working hard and humbly But the list doesn't end with just those three Dozens of teachers, students, parents, and Marist brothers have built SJA Campus Ministry into what it is today.

One holy man who did so much for the SJA Campus Ministry is the legendary Mr Tony Cantu ‘75. Mr. Cantu gave over 40 years to Saint Joseph Academy, and his presence can still be felt in everything we do in Campus Ministry We owe a debt of enormous gratitude to Mr. Cantu for building a program that continues to make Jesus known and loved today

As his first assignment as a Marist Brother, Ryan Richter started his ministry

here at Saint Joseph Academy, taking over the Campus Ministry Program When Br Dan O'Riordan suggested SJA, he was excited after having visited the area several times prior. "I had visited Brownsville a couple of times during my formation, and the Marist pillar of Family Spirit always struck me as incredibly strong here. That community aspect and all the support I've received from faculty and students have been a constant blessing throughout my

Brother Ryan Richter

first year I am filled with gratitude to God and every member of the St Joe community for this experience. There is no place I'd rather be. I love it here," he said.

Can you share your vision for the campus ministry program? What do you hope to achieve during your tenure?

My goal for campus ministry is to continue growing and expanding our offerings so all Bloodhounds can connect with God. I believe that Campus Ministry is the most extensive department on campus because Campus Ministry includes everyone – so we should have something for everyone. Every person ' s relationship with God is as unique as they are; what works for some people may not work for others. There are a million different ways to pray.

Whether you connect best to God through the rosary, adoration, Mass, nature, silence, singing, or however you feel God's presence, in the future, I want to offer meaningful ways for everyone to practice their faith A few of these currently under consideration are retreats designed for specific athletic teams, a camping retreat, a silent retreat, and a new club that would meet weekly to practice different ways to pray. Ultimately, we ' re open to trying anything as long as students express interest

How did you engage and involve students in the campus ministry activities?

The Call to Ministry Class, or CTM, is a class of senior students who feel called by Christ to serve as leaders in their school's faith community. These students' role in planning our retreats,

Marist Youth Gathering, summer 2024

prayer services, and liturgies is essential. Almost everything you see at any Campus Ministry event comes directly from the creativity and hard work of the CTM students Whenever a campus ministry event goes well, these students deserve all the credit – and this year ' s CTM class deserves a lot of credit. I think it works so well because other students are naturally engaged when the initiative and ideas come from students. This peer-to-peer model is a great way for students to walk together hand-in-hand on their journey to knowing and loving Jesus

How do you intend to collaborate with other departments or organizations within the school to enhance the overall student experience?

This year, we started having a Communion Service before school every Thursday, and several different clubs and athletic teams used this as an opportunity to grow in their faith as a team. Next year, I hope to continue increasing the number of student organizations participating in this new, simple, meaningful tradition I believe Campus Ministry is for everyone That means the opportunities for collaboration with other departments or organizations are endless. However, other departments see that Campus Ministry could be helpful to them, and we ' re here to help

What aspects of the campus ministry program are your strengths, and what areas do you hope to develop further?

Brother Richter and teachers who took part in the 12th grade retreat
Mr Tony Cantu  ‘75

Our biggest strength is the strong culture that Mr Cantu left behind It's remarkable to be in a place where so many people, students and staff, want to be a part of our campus ministry initiatives. They want to go on retreat, they want to go to Encounter, they want to sing in the choir, they want to do service. That is an enormous blessing Mr. Cantu gave us through years of hard work and prayer in developing Campus Ministry

Our challenge now is two-fold. First, we need to maintain this gift of a Campus Ministry program and culture that people love and actively participate in, but we also need to ensure that the program continues to work for us today. That means we must constantly reinvent ourselves and create a Campus Ministry program that works for this moment in time. For that, I also look to Mr Cantu for inspiration. He spoke the following words on a trip to the hermitage in 2022, but I find them very apt in describing where Campus Ministry is in 2024: "We did not come here to relive the past. We came here to let the past live in us so that it will continue to inspire and motivate us as we live our Marist lives and, in doing so, contribute to the future of Marist Life "

What opportunities do you see for the campus ministry program to make a positive impact on the broader community over time?

We certainly have room to grow our commitment to service in the local community. Between the needs of the immigrant population, the hungry and homeless in Brownsville, and our environmental concerns,

there's always more work Ms Cassey Barrera ‘16 has been phenomenal in growing these efforts and building a culture of service among all our students, from our 7th graders to seniors Next year, we hope to involve our teachers in more of our service opportunities, as well.

Tuition Assistance/Montagne Program

In a dynamic partnership with Guadalupe Regional Middle School (GRMS), Saint Joseph Academy (SJA) takes the lead in driving the Montagne Scholars Program, a groundbreaking initiative designed to cultivate the potential of academically gifted yet economically disadvantaged students By offering significant financial aid coupled with personalized academic and social guidance, SJA warmly welcomes graduating eighth graders from GRMS each May, kick-starting their journey toward mastering life skills, honing leadership qualities, and preparing for college.

Under the attentive mentorship of a dedicated Montagne moderator, supported by a student advocate and an experienced guidance counselor, these students embark on a tailored, demanding path to progress. Prioritizing academic achievement, social integration, and community involvement, the program instills values of empathy and service, reflecting the mission of s p r e a d

d understanding, inspired by Jesus, to all

Originating from modest backgrounds, many Montagne Scholars are trailblazers within their families, venturing into the realm of collegepreparatory education with resolute backing Driven by appreciation and a commitment to pay it forward, they actively engage in community service projects, witnessing firsthand the transformative influence of selflessness.

Notably, the program boasts a 100% acceptance rate into higher education institutions, with graduates earning coveted scholarships to prestigious universities across

the nation From Baylor University to MIT, from Columbia University to The University of Texas at Austin, the impressive roster of alma maters underscores the enduring influence of the program

Since its establishment in 2005, the Montagne Scholars Program has remained steadfast in monitoring the academic and professional journeys of its alumni, demonstrating profound impacts on both individuals and the wider community As these exceptional students embark on their paths through college and beyond, they embody resilience, determination, and the transformative power of education

Additionally, by providing tuition assistance, SJA opens doors of opportunity, serving as a beacon of hope for families striving to offer their children a transformative Marist education

Supported by a range of sources, including impactful fundraisers, the enduring SJA Endowment Fund, annual fund drives, and the unwavering support of alumni, parents, and benefactors, these funds ensure access to education for deserving students

10 students were named
Montagne Scholars for the 2023-2024 school year.

Guided by principles of fairness and compassion, the distribution of financial assistance is based on the demonstrated need of each family, balanced with the available resources within the program. Central to this support is the expectation that every family contributes to their child's educational journey, fostering a sense of shared responsibility and dedication. At the core of SJA’s values lies an unwavering commitment to fairness and inclusivity, where the financial circumstances of each family are carefully and impartially evaluated.

Teacher Spotlight: Henry Glynn

ACE Teaching Fellows, a program supported by AmeriCorps Indiana, is dedicated to cultivating a cohort of dedicated educators to support underserved K12 Catholic schools across the nation Since its inception in 1993, ACE has placed over 180 young professionals in 140+ parochial schools throughout the United States.

It is a transformative two-year journey in education with the Graduate Teaching Fellowship program Teachers dive into service at under-resourced Catholic schools while pursuing a cost-free Master of Education degree from the esteemed University of Notre Dame.

To fulfill its primary goal of providing quality education, ACE selects talented graduates from various academic backgrounds ACE teachers come from diverse fields, bringing a wide range of experiences and perspectives. The ACE program offers a rigorous two-year service commitment focused on professional development, community engagement, and spiritual enrichment – the three pillars of the ACE experience

Throughout their time in the program, ACE teachers immerse themselves in teaching, community building, and spiritual growth. These three pillars are interwoven into every aspect of the ACE experience, facilitating the holistic development of ACE teachers By fostering community within classrooms and residences, nurturing spiritual growth through service and communal living, and providing ongoing support and opportunities for professional development, ACE equips participants with the skills and mindset needed to excel as educators, community builders, and individuals of faith Social Studies teacher Henry Glynn, a Kansas native has served SJA in the last year as an ACE Teacher.

1. What inspired you to join the ACE program?

My father and grandfather are career educators, and witnessing their passions for students and school communities made a profound impact on my own discernment. While considering attending law school after my Creighton University undergraduate studies, I was blessed with an opportunity to spend a Summer in rural

Tanzania teaching english and math to preschoolers and working on my host family’s organic farm This experience opened my mind to the possibility of teaching after college, so when a friend directed me toward the University of Notre Dame’s ACE Teaching Fellows program, I applied immediately!

2. How as the ACE program impacted your personal growth and development?

Reflecting on my first year in ACE, I find myself feeling much older than the new college graduate I was just 12 months ago. My mother, a family practice physician back home in Kansas, has always encouraged me to pray for greater patience and humility. Perhaps God listened a little too well this year, because I certainly felt myriad opportunities for growth in both patience and humility as I taught, coached, and mentored teenagers!

In all seriousness, this year has been the most formative of my life - in my interactions with others, motivation to succeed, spiritual development of a true friendship with our loving God, and in this important career field!

I’m so lucky to be able to “cut my teeth” at SJA with wonderful students and staff, and I know that as long as I continue praying for patience and humility, my growth and development will continue!

3. In what ways do you think the ACE program is making a difference in education, both for students and communities?

ACE is transforming Catholic education across the country, impacting thousands of students, teachers, leaders, and families every single day By training and sending energetic and loving

young teachers to school communities in all sorts of circumstances, ACE is creating laserfocused goals of improving student and school outcomes for the benefit of all stakeholders Students in Catholic schools (and all schools) deserve top-tier educational resources, teaching, social-emotional support, and extracurricular opportunities In the same vein, communities deserve the University of Notre Dame’s educational and institutional support, but even more importantly, the reminder that the mission of Catholic education resonates across backgrounds, income levels, political parties, and even religious affiliation. In short, I feel that ACE is injecting Catholic schools across the United States with truth and love - and it is the privilege of my life to play even a small part in this mission.

4. How do you incorporate the values and mission of Notre Dame ACE and Saint Joseph Academy into your teaching practice?

Just as ACE pushes me to grow personally, professionally, and spiritually, I work hard to motivate my students to do their best in every aspect of their life at SJA - in the classroom, certainly, but also on the field, court, or track, on retreats, at a service event, or even just during lunchtime with their friends. My dad always reminded me (in so many words) that “ a job done only halfway isn’t worth doing at all ” ACE and SJA have very similar missions, but they boil down to the same two commandments Jesus laid out to his disciples (and to us) in the Gospels: love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself. I carry this attitude with me through every moment of class, practice, and prayer at

SJA each day, and my students know there aren’t any “jobs done halfway” in Room 112!

5. Looking ahead, how do you envision your future involvement

i n e d u c a t i o n a f t e r completing the ACE program?

I a m t h r i l l e d t o receive more fantastic education this summer through Master of E d u c a t i o n ( M . E d . ) classes on campus at Notre Dame Just as I have all year, I will try to make myself a “ sponge ” for material about how to be a better teacher for my students this fall. I hope my second year of ACE and at SJA will be full of even better educational practices and successes from my students, as well as greater opportunities to improve SJA’s overall educational profile as the top school in Brownsville! I am fully committed to the goodness of this profession and this place I pray constantly about how God envisions my future involvement in education after completing the ACE program, and this discernment is sure to continue throughout the ‘24-’25 school year

At this point, I hope to continue my own education after completing ACE’s Master of

Education program, perhaps by pursuing a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree with the eventual hope of serving as a school leader with a principal or presidential role. I am drawn to systems-level educational problems and solutions, and I will continue building skills of engagement, development, and educational practice all aimed toward the greater goal of student and school success. I don’t know exactly how this will all shake out yet, but I’m open to wherever and whatever God calls me to! My first year at SJA has been absolutely wonderful, and I’m already counting down the days to the first day of next school year!

was a great hit that we implemented again at our local mixer in February at the Alonzo building hosted in part by Tara Putegnat ’96 and the Brownsville Historical Association.

We extend a warm invitation to all Saint Joseph Academy graduates to join us and become members of our association If you ' ve attended one of our mixers, you ' ve likely heard about the benefits of joining firsthand.

Community Prayer Breakfast

On Friday, February 23, 2024, Saint Joseph Academy hosted the 13th annual Community Prayer Breakfast where distinguished members of our Saint Joseph Academy community were honored for their lifelong commitment and service of St. Joe and the city of Brownsville

The Community Prayer Breakfast is always an inspirational and heartwarming event as the Bro Francis Garza Student Center is filled with 200+ SJA alumni, families, faculty, students and friends who come together in celebration of the honorees and special guests

This year, Saint Joseph Academy was proud to award the President ’ s Distinguished Community Service award to Dr Rose Gowen ’77 and Mr Rusty Brechot 72’

Dr. Rose Gowen, a graduate from the St Joseph Academy class of 1977 has been a practicing physician in the city of Brownsville both in the private and public sector Dr Gowen served Brownsville as an elected commissioner to the City of Brownsville in 2009 and re-elected in 2013, 2017, and 2021 As a

commissioner, Dr. Gowen focuses on smart growth, quality-of-life projects and healthrelated issues such as raising awareness of the region’s high levels of obesity and related chronic disease. Partnering science, city government, and the community has resulted in a rich integrated network of policy and programming throughout the city that enables and invites healthy living.

One partnership that Dr. Gowen forged is between the UT Health Houston, School of

Public Health Brownsville and the City of Brownsville Health Dept to improve nutrition and accessibility of healthy food choices for all. Through that work, she was instrumental in the design and development of the Brownsville Farmers’ Market She served as the first Chairwoman of the Board of Directors and led the market in becoming a Texas-certified farmers’ market The Brownsville Farmers’ Market was recognized as a model of excellence by the Texas Department of Health and the US Mexico Border Health Commission.

Rusty Brechot is a proud graduate of Saint Joseph Academy class of 1972 After high school, Rusty attended Pan American University as well as St. Edwards University. In 1976 he began a 30-year career in the automobile business In 2005, Rusty joined Lone Star National Bank as a Sr Vice President and Business Development Officer He later became the Corporate Sales Manager for LSNB and in 2015 was named Market President for Cameron County

What was truly important in Rusty’s life was his love of community, especially when it came to the children of Brownsville and Cameron County. Rusty and his wife Robin have spent the last 30 years being involved in organizations that made a difference in our beautiful city and county. Those organizations included becoming board members of the Cameron County Children's Advocacy Centers known as Monica’s and Maggie’s house, The United Way of Southern Cameron County, the American Heart Association just to name a few. It was an honor for both Rusty and Robin to be inducted into the Saint Joseph Academy Ring of Honor in 2012 Rusty has also been a board member for Saint Joseph Academy and served for six years. Rusty also volunteers his time supporting organizations like Saint Joseph Academy, the Boy Scouts of America, Guadalupe Middle School, Las Huellas, The Children’s Bereavement Center and others by taking the role of Master of Ceremonies at their events and Galas

In 2008, Rusty and Robin started an organization with their son Jared and four Saint Joseph Academy students, called Teens Helping Kids For 12 years this organization held celebrity dinners with guests like former Dallas Cowboys Walt Garrison, Robert Newhouse and Mel Renfro and basketball great George Gervin In total over 60 Saint Joseph Academy students were involved and helped raise over $1,000,000.00 in which all the profits went to organizations in our community that were there to take care of children and families.

Those that attended the 13th annual Community Prayer Breakfast were enlightened with our guest speaker, Alexandra González Rainey, Class of 2011 and third generation Bloodhound. She graduated in 2015 with a degree in agricultural economics from Texas A & M University where she served as chair of the Traditions Council, co-founded the Aggie Network Student Ambassadors, served on various other leadership committees, and received the Buck Weirus Spirit Award, the highest honor for a current student at Texas A&M, and was student speaker for the undergraduate commencement ceremony. During her college years, her interest in the nonprofit sector was elicited from her position as student assistant to the President and CEO at The Association of Former Students, the official alumni association for Texas A&M University There, she reinforced her lifelong passion for public service through fundraising

for higher education and the worldwide “Aggie Network,” focused on raising scholarships and programmatic support for students and faculty.

This led to her to graduate school at The Bush School of Government and Public Service Were she earned a certificate in nonprofit management in 2016 and a master ’ s in public service and administration in 2018, all while working full-time in her major gifts fundraising role at The Association of Former Students

After serving as Director of Development for the Bush School and successfully raising millions of dollars for their initiatives and capital campaign she most recently accepted a new position and opportunity to serve as Deputy Chief of Staff to the president of Texas A&M University, General (Ret.) Mark A. Welsh III.

We would also like to take this time to thank our sponsors who helped make this event possible:
