BLACK HISTORY MONTH LOCAL SPEECH, GLOBAL REACH EXHIBIT GATHERING AREA, NORTH INDY Be sure to stop by an view the exhibit provided by the Indiana Historical Society in the Gathering Area during the month of February. This exhibit explores the impact of Robert F. Kennedy’s words given during a speech on the day MLK Jr. was assassinated and King’s legacy on several Indianapolis residents, while also looking at the Civil Rights Movement in Indianapolis. BLACK HISTORY MONTH IN- SERVICE MOMENT: Luke’s Leaders is our youth leadership development outreach. Mentors come alongside youth from our community to inspire them with the knowledge of their own giftedness and possibility. Luke’s Leaders gain leadership skills to become difference makers in their families, schools, and world. Looking back in history, in 1960 there was a little girl who was empowered with knowledge, courage, and supported through mentorship and education her entire life. This girl changed systems. At the tender age of six, Ruby Bridges advanced the cause of civil rights when she became the first African American student to integrate an elementary school in the South. She made history and is still making history today through her foundation. Like the example Ruby set, Luke’s Leaders are becoming tomorrow’s leaders, today. HISTORICAL OVERVIEW OF CIVIL RIGHTS IN MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA MARCH 3, 12:15PM-1:30PM - N101 OR ZOOM To be the change and build a beloved community, starts with understanding what brought us to where we are today. Join us on as we’ll take a historical journey to the epicenter of the civil rights movement, Montgomery, Alabama with guest speaker, Alex Lichenstein, IU Professor of American Studies. He will provide an overview of the sights, events, and people behind the area’s rich history. No matter where you are on your journey with racial history and reconciliation, what you may know, or think you know, there’s a spot for you. Register: stlukesumc.com/registration/ history
