BLACK HISTORY MONTH LOCAL SPEECH, GLOBAL REACH EXHIBIT GATHERING AREA, NORTH INDY Be sure to stop by an view the exhibit provided by the Indiana Historical Society in the Gathering Area during the month of February. This exhibit explores the impact of Robert F. Kennedy’s words given during a speech on the day MLK Jr. was assassinated and King’s legacy on several Indianapolis residents, while also looking at the Civil Rights Movement in Indianapolis. BLACK HISTORY MONTH IN- SERVICE MOMENT: According to the NAACP, from 1882 to 1968 there were over 4,500 reported lynchings that occurred in the United States, reported, the true number may never really be known. The Indiana Remembrance Coalition a group born out of St. Luke’s racial justice work is an interracial group of volunteers, guided by the Community Remembrance work of the Equal Justice Initiative and is dedicated to telling true stories of Indiana history that have been previously unknown and untold. Just this past September, the IRC and the Indiana Historical Bureau dedicated a state marker commemorating the public lynching of John Tucker, that occurred in downtown Indianapolis 178 years ago. At the marker dedication it was poignantly said, “we build monuments so that those who are yet to come will know the stony roads we traveled felt in days when hope was unborn.” MLK CENTER PARTNERSHIP Did you know that St. Luke’s Midtown Campus is connected to the MLK Center? Located at 40th and Illinois, the MLK Center provides expansive services that support kids through seniors. One of their main initiatives for the coming year is addressing the housing insecurity that exists in Midtown. There are many opportunities to volunteer at the MLK Center; contact Pastor Mindie (mindie.moore@stlukesumc.com) if you’d like to learn more! MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA TRIP There are still a few spots left on the Civil Rights Pilgrimage to Montgomery, April 11-14. This is a great way to learn about Black History AND important issues around race and justice today. Contact Pastor Mindie to see the trip brochure and to get signed up.
