The Hunger Games

Women’s Bible Study

Sundays, September 9-30,10:45AM-Noon, Luke’s Lodge. Preregistration helpful. Book available in Oasis. Back by popular demand…and expanded! Across the nation, people are discussing The Hunger Games—the characters, the plot, the comparisons to historical events and science fiction movies/novels as well as the ethics of it all. What is it about this story that captures the interest of students and adults alike? What themes express the experiences of youth and young adults in today’s society that leaders need to pay attention to? What biblical parallels can be found within The Hunger Games trilogy that may surprise readers? What does hope look like for a different world we can help shape? Join with others of all generations as we explore the questions of life raised by author Suzanne Collins, yet pondered by us all at one time or another. Led by Stephanie Eft, Associate Director of Youth Ministries and Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries.

Wednesdays, September 5-October 31, 1-2PM in E105. Religion and Science: Pathways to Truth. More than a dozen world experts consider how religion and science might coexist and even complement one another in the 21st Century. The nine DVD-based lessons include: Friends or Foes? The Story of a Complex Relationship; Truth in Science and Religion; God and Nature; Creation and Evolution; What Does It Mean to Be Human?; The God of Hope and the End of the World; Religion, Science, and Ethics: New Frontiers; and, Creation Care. Led by Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries.

Sundays, September 16-30, 11AM-Noon in E213. Pre-registration helpful. Book available in Oasis. Sometimes called “the third stage of life,” retirement years can be an important time to explore spiritual dimensions, gifts and experiences, especially when retirement suddenly removes career roles and even personal identity. Our culture claims, “You can have it all.” Our bodies respond, “No… there are limits.” How do we learn to live with limits and let some things go in order to make space for new adventures, learning and life? Join Rev. Marsha Hutchinson and other “boomers” to share the journey in creative possibilities of reclaiming hidden gifts, purpose and call.

OTHER CLASSES & WORKSHOPS

Why Bad Things Happen to Good People Wednesdays, September 5–October 31, 9:30-11AM in E105. Book available in the Oasis. This book, authored by Harold S. Kushner, offers a very moving and humane approach to understanding life's storms. It raises many questions that will challenge your mind and test your faith regarding the ultimate questions of life and death. Kushner, a Jewish rabbi facing his own child's fatal illness, deftly guides us through the inadequacies of the traditional answers to the problem of evil, then provides a uniquely practical and compassionate answer that has appealed to millions of readers across all religious creeds. Remarkable for its intensely relevant real-life examples and its fluid prose, this book cannot go unread by anyone who has ever been troubled by the question, "Why me?" Led by Dr. Marion Miller, St. Luke’s Associate Pastor.

A Conversation Carried on Throughout History Tuesdays, September 11 & 25, 9:30-11AM in the Parlor. Preregistration recommended. Childcare available upon request. Book available in Oasis. Author Rueben P. Job explores three questions at the center of our faith—questions that all major religions try to answer: Who is God? Who am I? Who are we together? Discover the greatness and goodness of God, the value of every beloved child of God, and the impact we can have in the world when we live as Jesus lived. Led by Rev. Marsha Hutchinson, St. Luke’s Associate Pastor.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES The Track’s vision is to help children discover God’s love, celebrate families, live out the teachings of Jesus every day and share God’s love with others.

September at The Track Our virtue for September is RESPECT. As we learn more about who God is and what God does, respect becomes a natural response to God's character. Not only does God have all authority but, according to the Bible, God also sets up governing authorities on earth. So showing respect to those in authority over us is an extension of showing respect to God. This month's memory verse is a reminder of exactly that: "Show proper respect to everyone." (1 PETER 2:17A) Respect is truly a question of how we respond to our authorities. Will we assume that everyone has something they can teach us? Or will we stubbornly work to get our own way? When we choose to elevate our attitude and think a little higher, we show others they are important because God has given their authority.

Volunteers Needed We are in need of Small Group Leaders for all ages for the upcoming school year. Leading a Small Group will offer you an opportunity to not only connect with children, but also help them connect with each other and build community. We are looking for adults who are willing to be a consistent person in the children’s lives. If you are interested in investing in the children of St. Luke’s, please contact thetrack@stlukesumc.com.

3rd Grade Bible Presentation Attention all 3rd graders and their parents! On Sunday evening, September 16, 5-7PM, current 3rd graders, along with their parents, are highly encouraged to come to the special "God's Big Story" program which will take place as a forerunner to the 3rd grade Bible presentation. There will be a pizza dinner, followed by a fun interactive time of exploring as students learn how to get the most out of reading their Bible. Sunday morning, September 23 during the 9:30 and 11:00 worship services, we'll be presenting Bibles to all 3rd graders in the Sanctuary. Receiving your Bible is a special tradition in our church, and we don't want you to miss it! Please contact us at thetrack@stlukesumc.com to reserve your spot for both of these events.

COMMUNITY MINISTRIES Refugee Assistance Ministry Kudos to the St Luke's youth and the many other volunteers who made a dream come true on Servant Day. The refugee resettlement agencies (Exodus and Catholic Charities) have placed most of the refugees in the Lake Nora apartments north of 86th Street on College Avenue. The refugees then must walk down College to get to the stores and to their church. The sides of the road had become so overgrown, the refugees were forced to walk in the street. On Servant Day, St. Luke's Associate Director of Youth Ministries, Stephanie Eft, led a community-wide effort to clear all the overgrowth. Members of the Burmese community center, First Baptist Church and Faith Church joined St. Luke’s in eliminating what was nicknamed "Brushzilla." The refugees can now walk to Nora and to their church safely. This fall, the refugee assistance ministry will be undertaking similar community-wide efforts to help the refugees. Interested in learning more? Pick up a brochure on RAM's bulletin board or contact Cathy Kennedy, jaycathy@ aol.com. There are opportunities for all ages, abilities and schedules.

FAMILY MINISTRIES Disciples Class for Young Couples

Families at St. Luke's come in all shapes, sizes, and makeups. One thing that seems common to us all, though, is the feeling of being stressed and over-stretched. But according to leadership expert Patrick Lencioni, what families need most is not less activity, but rather more clarity around what activities they pursue and why. Come join us on Sundays, September 9 and 23 for a two-week study based on Lencioni's The Three Big Questions for a Frantic Family. Class will be held in E107/109 from 5:30-7PM, childcare provided. See what defining your core values and top priorities can do to enhance your daily family life.

Want to learn more about the Bible? Ever thought of doing a Bible study with your spouse? This fall we'll be offering a special Disciples class for young couples to grow in their knowledge of the Bible together, led by Jim and Debbie Bushfield on 12 Tuesdays from 6:45-8PM. While Disciple is open to anyone, regardless of their knowledge level of the Bible, it does require a commitment to consistent reading during the week—on average two to three chapters of the Bible each day. In return for this commitment, what would you gain? A great group of young couples to be close friends with at church. A solid understanding of the Bible. A huge boost in your spiritual life. And a strong foundation for your marriage. Class begins August 28; those interested can contact Susan Fuquay at susanfuquay@yahoo.com, or register at www.stlukesumc.com.

Couples, Inc. The "Date Night Challenge" is coming to a close! Whether you finished all four dates, or even if you missed them all, come join other couples for the "Date Night Challenge" Finale on September 15. We'll be flipping the usual dinner by starting off at the church with a dessert extravaganza from 5:306:30PM, then we'll be sending you out on your final date of the challenge, equipped with our biggest dares and most insightful questions of the season. Cost is $5/couple, plus $5/child for those couples needing childcare. Tickets will be sold in the West Passage later in the month, or reserve your spot online. Come finish the challenge with a bang!

Three Big Questions for the Frantic Family

New Small Group Opportunity

In October, groups will be organized around a six-week study of Drs. Les & Leslie Parrott’s Time-Starved Marriage, something just about all couples struggle with. And while making time for a small group may be the last thing you think you can do if you're truly "time-starved," you'll discover through this study what happens when you choose to feed your relationship by investing your time in one another. Groups will be meeting throughout the week, in homes and at church. Please email coupleslife@ stlukesumc.com to find a group that is most convenient for you.

FELLOWSHIP Elderberries The Elderberries dinner program will be Thursday, September 6 at 5:30PM in Fellowship Hall. Our entertainment will be vocalist/pianist Jerri Williamson, who has performed as a solo act as well as being a keyboard player and vocalist with various dance bands around Indianapolis. She performs a variety of music, providing information about the music while interjecting humor. We ask that you bring a dish to share. A minimum of $3/person donation is suggested. Firsttime visitors do not need to pay or bring a dish. Please make reservations with Adra Wheeler at 253-4914 or 846-3404.

GREEN MINISTRIES Tree Selection & Care Presentation

Keep Paper/Magazines/Catalogs Coming!

The Green Ministry has invited our former staff member Nate Faris, who now has his own tree business and works for Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, to talk with us about tree selection and care. Many of us are concerned about the wellbeing of our trees and how the drought affected them. Nate will be available in the West Passage on Sunday, September 16 following all the morning services, and will make a presentation at 11AM in the Spiritual Life Center.

The green and yellow Abitibi bins at the east driveway accept white and colored paper, junk mail, magazines, newspaper and catalogs. No cardboard or corrugated board. You deposited over four tons in January and St. Luke’s earned $72.60, but since then because we didn’t reach four tons each month, we have only earned about $15 per month. Please help St. Luke’s Green Ministry by bringing your paper from home and office.

Green Gratitude The Green Ministry wishes to thank Tom Godby for directing the installation of new LED track lighting for the new art gallery in the hallway north of Robertson Chapel. Every time someone makes the decision to “go green,” it makes a difference.

Sign Up for Energy Audit until 2013! GET YOUR FRIENDS & NEIGHBORS, TOO! There is plenty of time to request an energy audit for your home. Register for the audit through St. Luke’s, and the Green Ministry will receive $25/audit to be used for “green” projects around our facility. You will receive a printout with suggestions and lots of freebies. No pressure to buy anything. Forms are online at www.stlukesumc.com, in the main office and at the Recycling Center in the Central Passage. Place completed forms in Betty Brandt’s mailbox. Encourage your family, friends and neighbors to request an audit. Not restricted to St. Luke’s community.

HEALTH MINISTRIES Walking Through the Medicare Maze Medicare A, Medicare B, Medicare D, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement. What are they and how are they different from one another? How do I choose? When do I choose? If you’ve ever asked yourself any of these questions, you aren’t alone. It’s complicated! If you’d like to learn more about these plans and feel a little more comfortable as you try to decide what to do, please come hear an unbiased overview. No specific insurance plans or carriers will be highlighted, and no one will try to sell you anything. This is an informational gathering. Your presenter is Jim Chesterfield, who became an employee benefits professional after 25 years of buying, implementing and managing benefit programs for companies in Central Indiana. Meets Monday, October 15, 7-8:30PM in E107/109. No registration or fee. Joint project of St. Luke’s Health Ministries and the Spiritual Life Center’s Healing Ministry.

LATER@ST. LUKE’S

Sermon Series - Psalm 23 Psalm 23 is undoubtedly one of the best-known passages in the Bible. Most of us learned it as children and it continues to bring comfort in times of sorrow. Maybe it’s so well loved because it is so personal and individual. When we read it, we certainly don’t think of David shepherding his sheep 3,000 years ago. Come join us.

WORKSHOPS, CLASSES & RETREATS

Parker Palmer’s Healing the Heart of Democracy Book Study New Perspectives will study Parker Palmer’s latest book just in time for the November elections. The discussion is open to all those wanting to delve into the wisdom of this noted Quaker author/retreat leader as he uncovers the meaning of what it is to be citizens in a 21st century democratic society. The study includes an opportunity to hear Dr. Palmer on Tuesday, October 23 when he is part of Christian Theological Seminary’s Petticrew FaithIn-Action Program (9AM-1:30PM, details at www.cts.edu). Book study begins Sunday, September 16, 11AM-Noon in E105. Led by Charlie Russell. Books available in Oasis. No registration or fee.

Spiritual Autobiography Workshop Friday, September 21, 1-6PM in Fellowship Hall. Registration required; fee $75. Through simple exercises that evoke past experience, we begin to see our lives in new ways, then write about it, and share with others. We re-experience events in a way that gives fresh understanding and appreciation of the richness of our lives, and see connections emerge as we tell the story of our life’s turning points. Meaningful experiences or insights from childhood and adolescence, the role of a friend, mentor or guide who helped us on our way, provide rich material. A concluding exercise shows us how to draw a road map of our own journey that can serve as a guide for continuing to write our ongoing spiritual autobiography. No experience necessary. Appreciation rather than criticism is offered, and reticence is respected.

Trip to New Harmony, IN The book study group that met in July to study John Philip Newell’s latest book A New Harmony will be taking a trip to New Harmony, IN on Sunday September 9 and Monday, September 10. Stay overnight at the New Harmony Inn, have dinner at the Red Geranium, observe Morning Prayer in the Roofless Chapel, tour the village and soak up the beauty and spirituality of this historic place. If you would like to join the group, contact Betty Brandt at 846-3404 x339, brandtb@stlukesumc.com for details.

His memoirs include New York in the Fifties, which was made a as a documentary film, and Returning: A Spiritual Journey, which Bill Moyers called “one of the most important memoirs of the spirit I have ever read.” For more information, visit danwakefield.com. This modality can be used on anyone, including infants and children. Learn helpful tips for easing allergies, headaches, anxiety, digestive upsets, and much more.

• SEPTEMBER 26: Discover Spiritual Direction with Beverly Gallagher. The practice of spiritual direction, or "holy listening," has been around for centuries, yet it is a somewhat unfamiliar concept in our society. Attendees will become acquainted with some of the tools used in spiritual direction. Bev completed the two-year Spiritual Direction Internship at the Benedict Inn, a ministry of the Sisters of St. Benedict, in 2010. She is a member of Spiritual Directors International and is a practicing spiritual director. • OCTOBER 3: All About Personal Training with Tammi Culmann. Tammi has been a certified Personal Trainer for over 25 years. She has worked with a wide range of clients, including post-rehab and elite athletes. Her training philosophy is "Bioindividuality." She believes that each person needs a personal exercise program as well as nutrition and dietary guidelines based on the chemical makeup of each body. Tammi works with your primary foods (your lifestyle/behaviors) and secondary foods (what you eat). She is all about "balance" when it comes to diet, exercise and lifestyle.

Letters from Dad

If God were to take you home today... what would your loved ones hold in their hands tomorrow that would let them know that they were the treasures of your life? This fall, the United Methodist Men will be offering a study called Letters from Dad. Learn to write the things you have always wanted to say but just didn't know how. Leave treasured letters of love that will be read long after you are gone. Build deep and lasting relationships with other men in your Legacy Group. Store, in letter form, the only three things that remain: Faith, Hope and Love. If you're interested, come join us on Wednesday, October 10 in Fellowship Hall for a kick-off dinner at 6PM to learn more about how to participate. Program will run Thursday evenings, 7-8:30PM, from October 18-November 29 (meeting every other week). Please RSVP for the kick-off dinner to David Williamson at 846-3404 or williamsond@stlukesumc.com.

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN UMW Reading Group

Pedal for Peace

This month, our group will take a break and read a light and humorous book by London advice columnist Virginia Ironside entitled No! I Don't Want to Join a Book Club: Diary of a Sixtieth Year. Ms. Ironside's writing has been described as touching, witty and often lyrical. The book is "a cathartic reading experience for those who are sick and tired of being pigeonholed because of their age. Old people come in all shapes, sizes and dispositions. They may choose to vegetate or to stay active, to fuss about their health or to ignore it, to bond with friends and family or to retreat from society. There is no one-size-fits-all rule book for aging." So, despite Ms. Ironside's admonitions about book clubs, join us on Monday, September 24 from 78:30PM in the Parlor. Newcomers are always welcome. Childcare is provided with one week's advance notice. For information, contact Jennifer Todd at jtoddosu@aol.com.

Are you interested in a local event that will help raise awareness of hunger both locally and globally? Do you enjoy biking? Come and join us as we Pedal for Peace at the Major Taylor Velodrome on Saturday, September 29 from 3-7PM. St. Luke’s and the Millard Family are among the sponsors. For information or to sign up, go to www.pedalforpeace.org. Our team name is St. Luke's UMW and the team captain is Allison Flickinger. YOUNG ADULT COMMUNITY Stay Connected

Opportunities During Transition

We send out our email the first week of each month that includes information about everything we’re doing for that particular month. From small groups to fellowships to mission projects, it’s all in one place. If you’d like to receive our monthly email, contact Carl Norden at ctnorden@gmail.com. Also, find us on Facebook at St. Luke’s UMC-Young Adult Community.

Transition always gives us opportunities to step to the plate, get involved and be part of a community. During September, the Young Adult Community will be taking a step back from regular scheduled events to spend some time gathering in fellowship, community and service. We'll be posting some events that we'd love for you to be part of on the church website and on our Facebook page, so be on the lookout for those opportunities as we continue forward into what the future holds for our ministry. In the meantime, if you have any questions about our Young Adult Community, you can contact our Lay Leader, Carl Norden, via email at ctnorden@gmail.com.

YOUTH MINISTRIES Register for any event at www.stlukesumc.com/youth. OUR MISSION: To welcome all youth and families into loving, Christ-centered

relationships where they can get in tune with God's amazing love and be empowered to transform the world!

NEW Sunday Morning Options:

Jr. High and Sr. High Fall Retreat at Spring Hill

Many of you gave your feedback from our youth ministry survey at the end of the year, and we've listened. Starting on September 9 we are going to have 9:30 and 11AM options for both Jr. High & High School students. High school will meet in the Lodge at 9:30AM, and Starbucks at 11AM. Our 9:30AM group will work their way through books of the Bible and stories in the Bible with games and discussion, much as they have done in the past. The 11AM Starbucks group will have discussion based around the sermon theme each week. Both students who do attend a church service and those who do not will enjoy these conversations about applying our faith to the world around us. Jr. High will continue to meet at 9:30AM at the Lodge for Confirmation and grades 6-8. They will also have a connecting option that works its way through a fun book or study at 11AM located at the Lodge. See all the times and topics in the Youth Extra section at the back of this publication.

September 28-30. Each age group will stay in its own area of the camp. The band Alanna Story, recently back from playing shows around the world, will lead our students in worship. Activities will include swimming, the Blob, kayaking, canoeing, gaga, and more! You definitely don't want to miss this awesome way to kick off a new school year, reconnect with church friends, and make new friends along the way!

SEPTEMBER YOUTH EVENTS:

Fall Kick-off Party September 9, 6-8PM. Our annual kickoff party to start the school year with youth group will feature inflatable games, a concert and worship led by local recording artist Kelly Taylor, lots of pizza, and more! Be sure to join us for this awesome event. All students entering grades 6 through 12 are welcome.

Communication Changes We are trying to maximize efficiency and effectiveness with our communication to teens and parents. Because of this, there are a few changes you should note. 1. Confirmation parents will receive a weekly email about verses for the week and topics, makeup lessons, service opportunities and ways to connect. 2. All other Jr. High and High School parents will receive their updates through a monthly parent newsletter that is comprehensive for the upcoming month, not through weekly updates. Our hope is that this way you will have one reference point per month to look at for dates, times and details.

Kenya Carnival Saturday, September 1, 2-6PM, Second Presbyterian Church, 7700 N. Meridian St., Indpls. Games – Inflatables - Food - Shopping – Entertainment. Everyone is welcome to this kid-powered interfaith event. Proceeds support Kenya high school students.

Jesse’s Street

New Check-In System

3rd Monday of every month, 6:30-8PM in the Conference Room. THIS MONTH: September 17. For parents who have a child with a physical, mental or emotional disability. Register for childcare by contacting Sylvia Forbes. Leaders: Kevin & Hillary McCarley, 850-1637.

We’ve launched a new computerized check-in system (CheckPoint) in Children's Ministries. Parents should register their children in this system in The Track area (East Passage). There are computer kiosks located across from the pager desk in The Track, and staff available to assist you. Once registered, the printer will produce a name badge for each child as well as a corresponding badge for the parent to use when picking up their child(ren). Parents who are missing their name badges will only be allowed to pick up their children by obtaining permission of the children's ministry staff. Volunteers will not release a child without a badge. The CheckPoint system will provide a greater level of organization during the check-in procedure, improvement in attendance data, and an increase in the efficiency of our overall administration. But most importantly, the automated system will heighten the overall security of children's ministry and increase parental confidence that each child is as safe as possible while within the walls of St. Luke's UMC.

Knitters Needed The prayer shawl ministry would love to have some more knitters. You are welcome to join them on Tuesdays at 1PM in the church conference room. Or knit from home. For more information or details about the shawl dimensions, please call Helen Vreisman at 439-6347.

Care Committee If you know of someone, confined to their home or health care center, call Mary Katherine at 846-3404 x365. The Care Committee makes monthly visits.

Dinner dates are September 17 & 26 and October 15 & 24. Need volunteers to donate food items, cook and especially to transport and serve. See bulletin board in the hall between Robertson Chapel and Oasis Bookstore to sign up, or call Kay Horton at 253-9833 for information. Requests for food at Fletcher Place have increased significantly and current supplies are low. The Food Pantry needs donations of oats, pasta and canned vegetables and fruits (low in sodium and sugar). Bulk quantities are acceptable and appreciated. These can be placed in drop boxes in the West Passage, please write Fletcher Place on the bags or boxes of items being donated. If a group in the church would provide one of the food groups on a regular basis, that would be very helpful. Volunteers are also needed in the thrift store, food pantry and GED preparation. Contact Larry Paxton at 873-2415 or ldpaxton@indy.rr.com, or Karen Mann at Fletcher Place, 636-3466 x4 or karen@fletcherplacecc.org.

Fox Hill Elementary The school year starts August 6, and much help is needed. Volunteer at Fox Hill Elementary school and experience the joy that so many other St Luke's members have. Your service to the students and faculty at Fox Hill will surely have a huge positive effect on the children you assist, but beware; you are likely to get more than you give. From LUKE 18:16 NIV..."But Jesus called the children to him and said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these." Join the fun in serving at Fox Hill. Volunteer opportunities include direct tutoring, mentoring, and administrative help. Complete the volunteer form at www.stlukesumc.com/outreach/community/school or contact Tom Lange at tom.c.lange@gmail.com.

Outreach, Inc. Our mission statement is short and simple: "Equipping and empowering homeless teens and young adults to exit street life.” We are requesting donations to purchase bus passes, GED materials, school supplies, text books, lunches, school uniforms, etc. Please make checks out to St. Luke’s and on memo line, list Outreach, Inc. ••• Our G.O.A.L. (Graduation, Occupation, Address, Lifestyle) Program supports at-risk students with a case manager who focuses on specific needs. Homeless students with no support system usually drop out of high school and stay trapped in the cycle of homelessness. Outreach developed a program to help homeless students graduate, get a job and change their life. We provide resources like advocacy, transportation to school, school lunches, textbooks, tutoring, a GED satellite classroom, even caps and gowns, help them find job openings and get transportation to interviews, assist in finding housing and helping with life-skills including budgeting and healthy living. As a result of G.O.A.L., over half of those graduating go on to college, vocational school or military service. For information, contact Jackie Reed at 332-6550 or jsrmolar @sbcglobal.net, or go to www.outreachindiana.org.

SAWs Servants at Work, building wheelchair ramps for disadvantaged folks, is looking for volunteers every Saturday. We are asked, “Just how often does a volunteer need to work?” Everyone is faced with many Saturday choices, so the answer is, “Just as often as you would like to!” Some of our wonderful volunteers only work one or two Saturdays per year. We recommend for your first time is to come the second half of a Saturday so you get to see the ramp surface completion and the happy client roll down their very own ramp to freedom. Questions? Contact Paul Snyder at psnyder1@indy.rr.com or 317-695-0585.

FELLOWSHIP ReachOut ReachOut is a diverse and inclusive group within the St. Luke’s United Methodist Church community offering spiritual support and encouragement to GLBT persons. Social and recreational activities are provided to promote an atmosphere where friendships can develop and a sense of acceptance and wholeness may be experienced. All are welcome. If you have questions about ReachOut, contact Mary Katherine Schnitz at schnitzm@stlukesumc.com.

If you, or someone you know in your family, workplace or neighborhood would benefit from a one-on-one session of grief counseling, contact Rev. Marsha Hutchinson at hutchinsonm@stlukesumc.com. Wholeness and health is the goal of working through loss; we hope no one considers doing it alone.
