Program Description
The St. Nicholas Summer Camp program is a comprehensive school-age program licensed with the Tennessee Department of Education. St. Nicholas maintains all standards for the safety and well-being of the children enrolled. Our program challenges the imagination, stimulates creativity, encourages self-directed initiative, and develops leadership skills in children. Fun opportunities for learning through active child-centered experiences are an important part of the program. Our teacher to camper ratio ensures that classrooms will not be crowded.
Our commitment is to make the necessary adjustments in order to keep our campers on campus, learning and engaging in classroom activities for five days a week. We can accomplish this through rotating schedules, utilizing our qualified camp staff, and maximizing our classroom and outdoor spaces.
5
Precautions CLEANING & DISINFECTING ☐ Desks, chairs, shared materials and frequently touched surfaces will be disinfected in between each class. ☐ Bathrooms will be cleaned multiple times a day. ☐ Each night the school will undergo a thorough cleaning.
HANDWASHING We are fortunate to have sinks in our classrooms. ☐ Campers will be given time to wash their hands several times a day. ☐ Staff will provide handwashing and other best practice instruction to students throughout the summer.
SHARED MATERIALS Any materials that need to be shared will be disinfected between different individuals using them.
6
Protocols CAMPER GROUPINGS
Per CDC recommendations, campers will be grouped into cohorts. These cohorts will include approximately 10-15 students, depending on the size of the level. A cohort will stay together for the entirety of the day and will not have classes with campers from other cohorts.
MASKS
Each camper should wear a mask labeled with his or her name to school each day. ☐ Campers and employees will be expected to wear masks when inside except for designated times. ☐ Campers will not have to wear a mask when they are able to practice social distancing outside. ☐ Please consider sending a second mask with your camper so that the mask can be changed midway through the day.
LUNCH AND SNACK TIME ☐ ☐ ☐ ☐
Snack and lunch will take place in classrooms or outdoors. We are not able to heat food nor can we store lunches in refrigerators. Please make sure campers are able to open any containers and or packaging. Please do not send any glass containers or bottles.
WATER FOUNTAINS
Water fountains have been replaced in each cottage with a sensor-activated water bottle filler. Campers are encouraged to bring a water bottle labeled with his or her name to use and refill throughout the school day.
FIELD TRIPS
We will not take field trips this summer.
7
SWIMMING All campers have the opportunity for time in the campus outdoor pool. A lifeguard is always on duty when campers are in the pool.
The depth of the pool ranges from 3 feet to 5 feet. Everybody takes a swim test before they are allowed to swim. We use a divider buoy line for the youngest groups. An arm band system is used for skill level identification.
8
GARDENING PROGRAM Growing a summer garden with your friends is a lot of fun! Children learn the basics of growing summer vegetables, herbs and flowers in the St. Nicholas school gardens. Garden activity examples include caring for greenhouse plants, weeding, making flower seed balls and learning with live Monarch caterpillars. Kids learn from garden to table how to enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables. Campers harvest fresh food from the St. Nicholas school garden for summer camp for cooking and tasting. Between digging in the dirt, and growing food for others, it’s an enriching experience all around.
Growing a garden is awesome fun!
9
The
MUSIC
component provides opportunities for campers to be creative while working with others through the art of improvisation. They have the chance to become comfortable sharing their singing and other musical talents in a creative and spontaneous environment. Campers also have the opportunity to experiment with various musical instruments during camp.
10
ART
Over the course of the summer, groups are encouraged to explore their own creativity and create many masterpieces using a variety of fun materials.
