In Remembrance
MARTIN CAPP | 1916 - 2015 Last month, the Twin Cities Jewish community lost a visionary, a humanitarian, and a dear friend. Since the day he arrived in St. Paul in 1924, Martin Capp was a positive force in the community, fully investing himself in all he did. Growing up in a working-class family during the Depression, Martin quickly developed a strong work ethic. As a boy, he worked seven days a week selling newspapers and concessions to help his parents make ends meet. Later on, he worked for American Lumber & Wrecking Company, then enlisted in the Coast Guard when WWII began. After four years of service in the war, Martin came back to Minnesota determined to make a name for himself. “I made up my mind at that point that I’d never work for anybody else,” he said in his autobiography, The Life and Times of Martin Capp: The First 92 Years. “I’d work for myself or starve.” In 1945, Martin founded M. Capp Manufacturing Company (later Capp Industries), which would pioneer the market of prefabricated housing. Later in life, he would also construct commercial real estate, including the Capp Towers hotels in St. Paul and Minneapolis. In 1946, Martin married Esther Wolf, a family friend whom he met at a bar mitzvah. The two were very involved in the St. Paul Jewish community, especially with Temple of Aaron and the St. Paul JCC. In 1964, Marty and Esther made the lead gift that facilitated the building of our JCC on St. Paul Avenue. “The JCC united us as a Jewish community,” Esther said of the donation. The couple created the Martin and Esther Capp Endowment Fund in 1994 to provide support for the maintenance and upkeep of the JCC. Through the years, the Capps made significant gifts to the fund, including a one million dollar community matching challenge gift to honor the retirement of long-time JCC Executive Director, Burt Garr. “Marty would often say his parents, despite being ‘dirt poor,’ always gave what little they had to help others,” said Burt Garr. “Marty certainly lived those values with his magnificent generosity throughout his lifetime. His generosity to the St. Paul JCC has enabled thousands to lead more meaningful lives, a fact that brought he and Esther much joy.” In 2013, the Capps supported our JCC once again by gifting $1 million dollars to kick-start the JCC Capital Campaign to renovate our beloved Center. Throughout all his successes, Martin was a loving husband and father. He is survived by his wife, Esther; their four children, Rand, Lisa, Debby, and Amy; eleven grandchildren; and five greatgrandchildren.
In 1964, Martin and Esther Capp lay the cornerstone brick of the new JCC on St. Paul Avenue, named the Martin and Esther Capp Building in their honor.
It is with admiration and gratitude that the St. Paul JCC community remembers and honors a remarkable man. His legacy and vision continue on in our community, our Center, and our hearts.
The legacy that Martin Capp has left to our organization is immeasurable. The impact of his leadership will be felt in our community for years and years to come. Michael Waldman Executive Director

JEWISH HOLIDAYS
ROSH HASHANAH JEWISH NEW YEAR SEPTEMBER 14 - 15
YOM KIPPUR DAY OF ATONEMENT SEPTEMBER 23
SUKKOT FEAST OF TABERNACLES SEPTEMBER 28 - OCTOBER 4
SIMCHAT TORAH JOY OF THE TORAH OCTOBER 5 - 6
Rosh HaShanah, the Jewish New Year, marks the beginning of Yamim Noraim, a ten-day period of prayer. On this holiday, it is a mitzvah (commandment) to hear the sounding of the shofar, or ram’s horn. Traditional foods are apples, honey, and round challah. Reform and Israeli Jews celebrate the holiday for one day, while Conservative and Orthodox Jews celebrate for two days.
Yom Kippur is one of the holiest days in the Jewish calendar. It is the culmination of Yamim Noraim, ten days of prayer and repentance beginning with Rosh Hashanah. The day is spent in prayer, meditation, and fasting, with the goal of starting the new year fresh and rededicated to a better life.
Sukkot is the celebration of the harvest. It is named for sukkot (huts) used during harvest time, and also symbolizes the huts in which the Jews lived during their journey from Egypt. Reform and Israeli Jews celebrate the holiday for seven days, while Conservative and Orthodox Jews celebrate for eight days.
Simchat Torah, the most joyful of the Jewish holidays, marks the completion of the year-long, public reading of the Torah. During the holiday, Torah scrolls are removed from the ark and carried around the synagogue. Reform and Israeli Jews celebrate the holiday on Shemini Atzeret; Conservative and Orthodox Jews the day after.
The future is online. So are we! Our new website makes it easier than ever to find and register for programs. That’s why we’ll no longer be publishing Attractions every month; instead, we’re shifting to three Program Guides per year, sent out in August, December, and May. The Program Guides will have all the information on the upcoming months, but you can also visit the Event Calendar at stpauljcc.org. Like getting a monthly update? Don’t worry; we’ll still be sending out our monthly eBlast highlighting upcoming programs.
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 2 BOARD MEMBERS OF THE YEAR!
On June 17, at our 85th Annual Meeting, Jennifer Bagdade and Tim Oskey were awarded the Sharon Gibson Award of Board Member of the Year. As a strategic communications specialist, Jennifer has helped the JCC manage our communications and messaging, bringing new sophistication, timeliness and impact to the way we talk to our community. Tim has been an important leader in JCC facilities development. He has worked behind the scenes on all of the recent changes to our facilities, developing strategies to maximize resources and achieve the most impactful results. As award winners, Tim and Jennifer will each receive a beautiful certificate of appreciation. Additionally, they are invited to attend the JCC Association’s International Biennial conference next spring, with expenses paid by special JCC endowment funds supporting emerging leaders’ participation at the Conference. Thank you for all your hard work, Jennifer and Tim!
