ATTRACTIONS May 2015 | Summer Program Guide Volume XXXVII, No. 9
Today’s counselors in training, tomorrow’s leaders. CITs Becky and Alex soak up the sun and turn up the fun at Camp Butwin last summer. Our CITs are role models for younger campers who develop their skills as counselors, make new friends, and participate in field trips, evening activities and overnights throughout the summer. Still looking for a summer job? If you’re an enthusiastic teen entering 9th or 10th grade, the CIT program is for you! For more information, contact Ben Savin, Youth Programs Coordinator, at 651 + 255 4767.
executive notes We did it! We officially have almost made it to summer. Ahead of us are long days, warm nights, and a ton of great things to do at the J. Whether you’re looking to get active after a long winter, learn something new, or experience the arts, we’ve got a warm-weather activity for you. Camp Butwin families, it’s not too late to sign your children up for the summer of their lives. The first session starts June 15—that’s less than 6 weeks away! After camp ends, the fun’s not over; stick around for Butwin Extended and give your child the chance to explore a special topic of their choice, from horseback riding to the arts. Speaking of which, here’s another great way to get out and enjoy the warm weather: attend our Fore the Kids Golf & Games Benefit for Camp Butwin. Not a golfer? Not a problem! The benefit will also feature Mahjong, Bridge, Shmear, and Canasta, not to

JEWISH HOLIDAY MAY 24 - 25 | SIVAN 6 - 7
Shavuot TAG...Tracey’s It! In March, a group of St. Paul JCC Staff had the chance to attend the JCCs of North America’s Professional Conference in Orlando, FL, where they learned tools to bring our J to the next level. We’re proud to say that our very own Tracey Agranoff not only presented twice at the conference, but was also chosen out of hundreds to be a member of the Mandel Center for Jewish Education’s TAG Team. The TAG Team is a group of 11 JCC employees from around the country whose goal is to train other JCC employees on how to create a summer camp defined by Jewish values, an effort they call “delivering the J.” Tracey was selected as a result of all the wonderful work she’s done bringing the “J” here at the St. Paul JCC. She has been a member of TAG since 2013, and has created numerous curriculae for them. Please join us in congratulating Tracey on this great honor!

Shavuot, which means the “Festival of Weeks,” occurs seven weeks after Passover. It is a three-fold celebration that commemorates the receiving of the Torah at Mount Sinai, the harvesting of wheat in the land of Israel, and the ripening of the first fruits in Jerusalem. On Passover the Jews were freed from slavery; on Shavuot they were made into free people by receiving the Ten Commandments. Traditional foods for this holiday include blintzes, cheesecake, honey cake and other dairy dishes reminding us that the land of Israel is “flowing with milk and honey.” Reform Jews and Jews living in Israel observe the holiday for one day, while Conservative and Orthodox Jews celebrate the holiday for two days.

BOOK GROUP THURSDAY, MAY 28 • 10 - 11 AM This month, we’re reading Gary Shteyngart’s Super Sad True Love Story, a satirical, dystopic vision of the future. Middleaged Lenny Abramov is obsessed with three things: living forever, books, and Eunice Park, a 20-something KoreanAmerican. Eunice finds in Lenny refuge from her overbearing immigrant parents. Narrating in alternate chapters, the pair reveal a funhouse-mirror version of contemporary America: terminally-indebted to China, controlled by the singular “Bipartisan Party,” and consumed by the superficial. 12 TEENS, 2 CITIES COUNTLESS CONNECTIONS
Did you notice the large group of teens hanging around the JCC in April - half of them speaking English, the other half speaking Hebrew? That’s because the St. Paul JCC hosted the Teen Mifgash (encounter) program in collaboration with the Jewish Federation of Greater St. Paul and Partnership2Gether (P2G). Six Israeli teens from the Sovev Kinneret Region came to Minnesota as part of their ecology class to spend time volunteering, socializing and creating life-long friendships with a group of St. Paul JCC teens. The goals for their

trip to the “land of 10,000 lakes” included cross-cultural learning, studying Minnesota’s ecosystems, teaching the American teenagers about Israeli water usage, and gaining exposure to the ways in which Judaism is practiced in both Israel and America. This impactful mifgash was a terrific stepping stone for connecting Israeli and Jewish teens from our sister cities. Todah Rabah – thank you to everyone who opened their homes to our Israeli visitors as well as Tracey Agranoff and Alyssa

Golob for their excellent work in coordinating the visit! Partnership 2Gether is a program of the Jewish Federation of Greater St. Paul and the Jewish Agency for Israel, designed to cultivate peopleto-people relationships between St. Paul and the Sovev Kinneret Region in Israel. The Teen Mifgash was a collaboration between the St. Paul JCC, Beth Jacob Congregation, Mount Zion Temple, Talmud Torah of St. Paul and Temple of Aaron.
