ATTRACTIONS Fall Program Guide 2016 Volume XXXVIIII, No. 1

Our Annual Meeting is a community gathering, bringing people from all walks of life together. At this year’s event, Margie Resnick and Evie Kamin were reunited after 69 years. The two hadn’t seen each other since they graduated together from St. Paul’s Central High School in 1947! Decades later, Margie and Evie are still invested in the neighborhood, a testament to the wonderful community we have here.

E X E C U T I V E N OT E S

Fall is around the corner; another wonderful season of Camp Butwin is winding down, and the kids are getting ready to go back to school. As we look forward to all that fall will bring, I’d like to take a moment to reflect back on the summer. It was great to see everyone who came out to our 86th Annual Meeting on June 15. At the meeting, we honored and remembered our Life Board members, with a special tribute to Marvin Pertzik. For decades, Marvin has been an active leader in our St. Paul community. During his tenure as president of our Center from 1982 1984, he pioneered our endowment program, what is now known as the Generation to Generation Society. Today, our $12 million dollar endowment fund makes us the envy of JCCs across the country. In honor

of Marvin’s generous service to our Center, we have dedicated our Jewish Cultural Arts Department in his name. Another highlight of summer was our Fore the Kids Golf & Games Benefit. This year, we had record attendance: 141 golfers, 65 gamers, and 48 corporate sponsors — raising $47,000 to provide scholarships to attend preschool, summer camps, and afterschool enrichment programs. You may have noticed that we didn’t have a Summer Soiree this year. That’s because we’re planning an even bigger party for Saturday, December 3, 2016. The gala, called It’s About Time, will be a joint event with Sabes JCC, honoring Steve & Wendy Baldinger, Mike & Etta Barry and celebrating the partnership of our Twin Cities JCCs. Mark your calendars!

MICHAEL WALDMAN | EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

B’Shalom,

There’s something about this place. THE BUZ Z | ANNUAL MEETING Our 86th Annual Meeting, which took place on Wednesday, June 15, was a great success. At the meeting, we honored our Life Board members, with a special tribute to Marvin Pertzik. We also elected a new board and honored a few outstanding community members. Thanks to everyone who attended!

Congratulations to…

TISHA B’AV DAY OF MOURNING AUGUST 14

YOM KIPPUR DAY OF ATONEMENT OCTOBER 12

SHEMINI ATZERET ASSEMBLY OF THE EIGHTH DAY OCTOBER 24

Tisha B’Av is a day of mourning for the tragedies that have befallen the Jewish people, many of which occurred on the ninth of Av. The holiday commemorates the destruction of the first and second Temples (in 586 B.C.E. and 70 C.E), as well as the expulsion of the Jews from England in 1290 and from Spain in 1492. Instituted by the rabbis of 2ndcentury Palestine, Tisha B’Av is regarded as the saddest day on the Jewish calendar.

Yom Kippur is the culmination of Yamim Noraim, the ten days of prayer and repentance beginning with Rosh Hashanah. The day is spent in prayer, meditation, and fasting, with the goal of starting the new year fresh and rededicated to a better life. It is one of the holiest days in the Jewish calendar.

Shemini Atzeret follows the seven days of Sukkot. The holiday marks the end of the harvest season with prayers for rain in the coming year.

ROSH HASHANAH JEWISH NEW YEAR OCTOBER 3 - 4

SUKKOT FEAST OF TABERNACLES OCTOBER 17 - 23 Sukkot is the celebration of the harvest. It is named for sukkot (huts) used during harvest time, and also symbolizes the huts in which the Jews lived during their journey from Egypt. During the holiday, a blessing is recited each day over the lulav (unopened palm frond, myrtle branches, and willows) and etrog (citron fruit). Reform and Israeli Jews celebrate the holiday for seven days, while Conservative and Orthodox Jews celebrate for eight days.

Simchat Torah, the most joyful of the Jewish holidays, marks the completion of the yearlong, public reading of the Torah. During the holiday, Torah scrolls are removed from the ark and carried around the synagogue. Reform and Israeli Jews celebrate the holiday on Shemini Atzeret; Conservative and Orthodox Jews the day after.

Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year. It marks the beginning of Yamim Noraim, a ten-day period of prayer. On this holiday, it is a mitzvah (commandment) to hear the sounding of the shofar, or ram’s horn. Apples, honey, and round challah are eaten, symbolizing the hope for a sweet new year and the circular nature of the yearly cycle. Reform and Israeli Jews celebrate the holiday for one day, while Conservative and Orthodox Jews celebrate for two days.

In Remembrance

H O WA R D B R E A M It is with great sorrow that we commemorate the passing of beloved community member Howard Bream. With two businesses in St. Paul, Bream Homes and Stogies on Grand, Howard was cherished by countless customers and clients in the St. Paul community. Howard was an active member of the St. Paul JCC, serving on our Board from 1979-86, 1988-93 and 1995-2002. He was Vice President in 1984, 1985, and 1988, and President from 1992-94. His ongoing dedication to our Center was extraordinary. Howard was a kind, loving man who was well-respected by all. His wife, Eileen, and children, Debbie and Lisa, were his greatest joys in life. Zichrono L’vracha - may his memory be a blessing.
