After gathering broad critical and public acclaim for his first two albums – Feather & Stone and Skybound – Tom Baxter took time out to rediscover his passion for the guitar and his love of songwriting. It was a journey that took him from the wilds of Devon, through the foothills of India and the mountains of Southern Spain and finally to California. The end result was The Uncarved Block – Part One, which showcases his masterful guitar-playing and the raw, confessionary depth of his lyrics and voice. tombaxter.com

Glyndebourne Touring Opera return to The Stables with a film screening of their acclaimed 2010 production of Benjamin Britten’s opera Billy Budd. The tense and stifling atmosphere on board a ship during the Napoleonic wars, with discipline brutally enforced and danger of attack ever present, is powerfully evoked in this production by Michael Grandage. Britten and his librettists E.M. Forster and Eric Crozier present a situation where a man’s innocence, a shining goodness as embodied in the character of Billy, is not enough to save him. And at the heart of it all lies an insinuating emotional ambiguity, making this opera a deeply disturbing and unforgettable experience. Sung in English with English supertitles

This refreshingly honest artist is not only a truly gifted musician, playing piano, guitar and harmonica, but also a pioneer in the music industry, having paved the way for a generation of digital newcomers. Likened to a modern-day Joni Mitchell but with the voice of Janis Joplin, her music carries a strong message delivered by a performance that cuts right to your heart. sandithom.com

Relive the iconic story of idealist George Bailey whose dreams look set to be dashed by small-town scandal and big business. Alone on a bridge, he decides that everyone would be better off without him... or would they? It falls to hapless guardian angel Clarence to try and save him. Beck Goldsmith Date: Saturday 7 November, 8.45pm Tickets: £10 in advance, £12 on the door

Black Martis is an instrumental piano-based trio from Milton Keynes. While their set-up may resemble that of a standard jazz trio, the music does not. Mixing pounding rock and samba-fuelled rhythms, aggressive bass lines and flowing piano riffs, the band create a sound big enough to surprise the unsuspecting onlooker in more ways than one. Loyalty to any particular genre goes out of the window and what is left is a truly passionate sound unrestrained by what is expected. blackmartis.co.uk

When Beck Goldsmith’s distinctive vocals featured on the trailer to BBC drama The Village, it reached out and struck a chord with an already gathering audience. Haunting and intimate, her cover of the hymn I Vow to Thee My Country brought a contemporary edge that unearthed new power and poignancy in the well-loved song. Goldsmith’s music is cinematic in mood and atmosphere. It has warmth and depth, with dark undercurrent, poetic lyricism and textured instrumentation. beckgoldsmith.co.uk
