This fantastic show celebrates the music of 1980s super-group The Traveling Wilburys. The Wilburys never toured, perhaps due to the untimely death of Roy Orbison in 1988, and so their fans never got to see them perform live. Have you ever wanted to have a go on the guitar but are not sure where to start? Or maybe you’d like to buy one but you’re not sure what to look for? This workshop aims to give absolute beginners a great starting point, with lots of information and advice, including how to start playing and practicing, and advice on buying a guitar and avoiding costly mistakes. You’ll learn about the different parts of the guitar, tuning, ‘open’ chords, understanding ‘tab’, using a capo, and how to strum to simple songs, as well as useful ‘non-playing exercises’ to help develop playing technique. There will be a small amount of playing on the day at a level suitable for absolute beginners – if you have a guitar, bring it along. Some guitars will be available for you to try on the day.
In Part 1 we looked at various right-hand rhythm techniques aimed at accompanying a variety of typical tune and dance types. In Part 2 the focus will be on the left hand, investigating typical chord progressions and some alternative ways of voicing these. Both Parts 1 & 2 will be useful whatever genre you play and will help develop your skills whether you’re accompanist or a songwriter. Please bring along a steel strung acoustic guitar.

In this practical workshop, blues musician Joff Watkins introduces the blues, demystifies V-IVIs, turnarounds, shuffles and basic basslines and introduces fundamental techniques such as finger picking, hammer-ons and pull-offs, using examples from classic blues recordings. You will need to be comfortable with the chords of E, A and B7 and be able to change confidently between them. It will also be helpful if you know what a scale is but not essential as the blues scale will be introduced in a very practical way.

Perhaps you already sing in a choir, or play in a band, and want to try solo or lead vocals? This workshop aims to give you a ‘singers toolbox’ of tips and techniques for singing live and developing your stage craft and performance. You’ll look at equipment essentials, microphone technique and which mic to use, understanding monitoring, fold back and live mixing to get the best out of your sound, how to approach different styles of music such as rock, pop or jazz. and how to tackle the challenges of fronting a band, whatever the size. Participants will be sent a short list of songs to listen to and get familiar with before the workshop. Please note his workshop is not a ‘singing lesson’ as such and won’t be about general singing technique, and you’ll need enough singing experience to know you want to have a go at singing solo.
