There will be interactive activities in the target language and vocabulary extension related to the films. There are opportunities for students to learn more about film language and also to act out small dramas on stage which will help consolidate learning. Harmony-laden Americana band The Wandering Hearts burst onto the scene in 2018 with their debut album Wild Silence. In the same year, they won the coveted Bob Harris Emerging Artist Award at the UK Americana Awards before heading out on a sold-out album tour. Breaking all genre boundaries, The Wandering Hearts didn’t set out with a sound in mind and nor do they have one now. The late, great Edwin Starr’s band The Team and special guest northern soul legend Lorraine Silver perform soul and Motown hits including Agent 00 Soul, 25 Miles, Stop Her On Sight, Landslide, War, Eye To Eye Contact and many more. Angelo Starr (Edwin’s brother) has taken over on lead vocals, performing all the fantastic Edwin Starr classics and some great northern soul covers. Lorraine recorded Lost Summer Love, still a massive favourite on the northern soul and Scooter scene.
The Secret Sisters – Laura and Lydia Roger – grapple with love and loss on their fourth album Saturn Return. For the first time in their 10-year recording career, the Grammynominated duo composed all of the songs without any co-writers and sang as individuals in the studio instead of relying solely on close harmony singing. Songs range from Cabin, a powerful anthem written in the aftermath of Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings, to Hold You Dear, a tender ballad about new motherhood. secretsistersband.com

Fresh from an extended time playing in New York, Harry Bolt will lead his own talented quartet who are NOT an “eclectic mix of trip-hop, psyambient, neo-soul, underworld electronic fusion”(!), but four young modern jazz musicians, UK rising stars at the top of their game. Born from the work of the duo Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin, Edgelarks combine exquisite folk with influences as diverse as the blues and Indian classical slide guitar to create a sound that is “subtle, atmospheric and bravely original” (The Guardian). Recorded in Dartmoor with Mercury-nominated producer Sean Lakeman, the album takes its name from a street in Bath, Somerset, where Carus’s late grandfather lived before he left his home for Australia. Carus’s narrative, characterbased, emotive songs have long earned him comparisons to Springsteen and Mellancamp. carusthompson.com

Sajeela Kershi: Fights Like A Girl!
16+
Friday 5 June, 8.45pm £13.50 Fights Like a Girl! is a reflection of everything Sajeela Kershi has fought for and against. The show was born at the Women’s March in London with Sajeela fighting to keep her prime position on the frontline – even if that meant elbowing Harriet Harman out of the way. We learn of Sajeela’s personal frightening challenge to march through the Edinburgh Fringe in spite of a sudden inexplicable rapid hearing loss. It’s a fight against time, will she make it to the finish line of the Fringe to the sound of rapturous applause or deafening silence? LIKE THIS? TRY THIS... Grace Petrie

Jazz performer Viviana Zarbo performs her 2019 Edinburgh Fringe hit show. Although one of the world’s most famous actresses, Marilyn Monroe’s contribution to the golden age of swing and jazz is often overlooked; her breathy renditions of songs like My Heart Belongs To Daddy and I Am Through With Love remain unique and instantly recognisable. Far from impersonating Monroe, Viviano reinterprets her songs in her own way and looks at the story of her life, asking whether any of us truly know the woman behind the iconic image? vivianazarboartist.com

Adult/15+ Workshop
Sunday 22 March, 10am-3pm £37
Sunday 1 March, 2.30-5pm £24 This workshop is for anyone new to hand drumming or interested in finding out more about conga drumming or Latin-American rhythms. We’ll look at basic techniques including palm/finger movements and hand shapes for producing open tones, bass tones and slap, exercises for developing tone, independence and coordination. We’ll also explore some Brazilian and Cuban rhythms, with parts for one, two and three drums, and how the individual lines fit together with bell patterns and the ‘clave’ rhythm. You’ll take away plenty of ideas after the workshop as well as notes of what is covered on the day.
How to Make Up Chord Sequences Adult/15+ Workshop Saturday 7 March, 10am-4pm £35 This workshop is designed to de-mystify the process of making up the chords to a song. Suitable for guitarists, keyboard players and anyone else interested in the process, it will look at examples of popular songs in different styles, starting with simple chord sequences and progressing to more advanced ones, and looking at how more complex chords can add colour and depth. This fast-paced workshop covers basic principles that relative beginners will need to understand, but also more complex extended chord sequences that more experienced players will find useful. Full notes will be supplied to take away. You should have some understanding of scales and chords. If you are a guitarist, please bring an acoustic guitar and capo. Some keyboards will be available (please advise at time of booking if needed).
Adult/15+ Workshop The mandolin is a popular instrument used in a range of styles including country, bluegrass, traditional folk and Irish music. It is great as a melody or rhythm instrument and this workshop will introduce both styles of playing. It will look at basic technique, simple tunes, chord shapes and progressions, and playing as a group and is suitable for those who have some basic experience of stringed instruments (such as guitar, ukulele, banjo, bouzouki, violin) and who can play basic open chords and a few scales of tunes. An ability to read tablature is useful but not essential. Please bring a mandolin if you have one, or contact education@stables.org if you need to borrow one (limited numbers available).

You’ll look at a range of Cuban and Brazilian rhythms with two-drum conga patterns for one player. We’ll continue developing work on all conga sounds (including open slaps and muffled tones) and look at more complex exercises including palm/ finger movements and rudiments. The workshop is suitable for anyone who has done Conga Part 1 or has some experience of conga drumming. Adult/15+ Workshop
Saturdays 18 April, 30 May & 27 June, 9.30am-12.30pm (3-session course) £52

We look at how a capo creates guitar-friendly keys from awkward keys, where to put the capo and how we transpose chords from difficult keys into these friendly keys. We explore different picking patterns for various songs and you will experiment with your own picking patterns. We also look briefly at a self-accompanied style of playing both the tune and accompanying chords at the same time. To benefit from this workshop you ideally need to have been playing for at least 6 months and be able to play most of chords G, C, D, A, E, F, Am, Dm, Em, Bm, F#m, B7, G7, F7. Please bring a guitar (acoustic preferred), guitar tuner and a capo.

Hugh Jackman leads an all-star cast in this bold and original musical filled with infectious showstopping performances that will bring you to your feet time and time again. Inspired by the story of P.T. Barnum (Jackman), the film follows the visionary who rose from nothing to create a mesmerizing spectacle.
When Bonnie adds a reluctant new toy called Forky to her room, a road trip adventure alongside old and new friends will show Woody how big the world can be for a toy. Heartwarming, funny, and beautifully animated, Toy Story 4 manages the unlikely feat of extending – and perhaps concluding –a practically perfect animated saga.
Tickets £5 (raked seating), £3 (flat seating), under-18s £4 and £2. All prices include booking fee
