The Salt Path is Raynor Winn’s bestselling memoir of walking the South West Coast Path in its entirety, under the weight of personal tragedy and misfortune. Such a well-trodden path must hold many more stories of loss, love and the natural world. Perhaps these stories could be found in the form of traditional songs and tunes that have been left behind and saved for us thanks to the diligence of song collectors such as Cecil Sharp and Sabine Baring-Gould.

This seed of an idea has developed into an exciting collaboration between Raynor and The Gigspanner Big Band, a collective of some of the most high-profile names on the British folk scene, including founder member Peter Knight, Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin of Edgelarks, and Bellowhead co-founder John Spiers. Together, Raynor and the band will celebrate, in traditional songs and newly written words, this “630 uninterrupted miles of coastline, crossing wild headlands with the calls of oystercatchers, and the smell of salt-laden air ever present”. UK blues scene with their debut Uprising EP gone from strength to strength. Their unique harmonic vocal-led approach to songwriting, dirty electric guitar, slide resonator mandolin and fiddle create a unique, distinctive and contemporary blues rock sound that echoes classic rock with hints of the blues that inspire them.

This£25 workshop will explore DADGAD guitar tuning and its application for backing traditional folk tunes and songs. DADGAD is a widely used open tuning and a feature of traditional English, Scottish and Irish music. This workshop is designed for intermediate guitar players who already play in ‘standard’ tuning but would like to explore a new sound. We will first look at some basic chord shapes and learn how to back a tune. Along the way we will learn some basic music theory and how it applies to traditional music, and some tricks of the trade to make your backing more exciting. Players need to be reasonably confident playing chords and chord changes in standard tuning, accompanying songs or dance tunes with different strumming patterns, but no previous experience of DADGAD tuning is needed. If you are not sure that your playing experience is suitable contact education@stables. org for further advice before booking. You’ll need to bring an acoustic guitar, a capo and clip-on guitar tuner.
