This fantastic show celebrates the music of 1980s super group The Traveling Wilburys. Born of AfricanCaribbean descent in Québec, Kaia Kater grew up between two worlds: one her family’s deep ties to Canadian folk music in her Toronto home; the other the years she spent learning and studying Appalachian music in West Virginia. Her acclaimed debut album Sorrow Bound (2015) touched on this divide, but her second album, Nine Pin (2016), delved even further, casting an unflinching eye at the realities faced by people of colour in North America every day. For the Graviton album, Andrew has assembled an A-List of the most sought-after musicians in the modern jazz world, all of whom bring something special to the mix. The music may be best described as ‘ProgJazz’: a mix of Steve Reich and Tigran Hamasyan, without boundaries. mccormackmusic.com

Ceilidh Experience
Playing for dancing can stretch you as a musician, but can also be one of the most rewarding musical experiences. The Ceilidh Experience is a chance for anyone interested in traditional and folk music to play in a band and play at a ceilidh. During the sessions you’ll learn tunes and come together as small ceilidh bands, getting ready to perform at a final event for dancers and folk fans of all ages. You’ll be supported in the sessions by experienced professional tutors and ceilidh band performers, have the opportunity to practice with a ‘caller’ and perform on a professional stage and learn how to perform acoustically and with amplification. All instruments are welcome, but acoustic ones especially so! You should already be able to play tunes from memory, ideally at ’dance speed’ and be prepared to do some tune practice between sessions.
Introduction to Stage Lighting Adult/16+ Course Dates: Saturdays 27 January and 17 February 2018, 10am-4pm: two-part course Course fee: £60 Day 1 Introduction to the venue; basic principles of lighting; health & safety aspects; intro to lighting equipment, including lanterns, lighting control consoles; basics of lighting design; types of rigging equipment

Content will include basic lighting theory and design principles as well as an introduction to equipment and technical terms. Working with a variety of lighting stage equipment, you will get practical experience – including rigging, focussing and operating – in a professional environment and see how the lighting elements come together in putting on an event or show. The course will be led by experienced professionals and is especially suitable for those who already have a little technical knowledge and experience, perhaps gained through school, college or with amateur groups.

Working from The Stables’ studio and control room and also on the main stage, this hands-on workshop will look at microphone and production techniques and how to record different instruments. We’ll be using MAC computer and Logic Software, but in a way that also covers the principles that apply generally across other Digital Audio Workstations software such as Ableton, Cubase and Sonar. The focus will be on recording and production rather than just creating within the software and you’ll be able to take away audio files of tracks produced to further practice the skills you’ve learned. If you play an instrument, please bring it along for the afternoon recording session to learn how best to record it. (A Part 2 follow-on workshop on Sat 24 February looks in more detail into studio based recording and production – see page 47 for more details)

This fast-paced workshop covers basic principles that relative beginners will need to understand, but also more complex extended chord sequences that more experienced players will find useful. Full notes will be supplied to take away. You should have some understanding of scales and chords. If you are a guitarist, please bring an acoustic guitar and capo. Introduction to Finger-Style Guitar
Adult/15+ Workshop
Adult/15 + Workshop
Date: Saturday 17 February, 10am-3pm Workshop fee: £35
Date: Saturday 3 March,10am-4pm Workshop fee: £35
In this practical workshop, blues musician Joff Watkins introduces the blues, demystifies V-IVIs, turnarounds, shuffles and basic basslines and introduces fundamental techniques such as finger picking, hammer-ons and pull-offs, using examples from classic blues recordings. You will need to be comfortable with the chords of E, A and B7 and be able to change confidently between them. It will also be helpful if you know what a scale is but not essential as the blues scale will be introduced in a very practical way.
This follow-up workshop to our Guitar for Improvers workshop is also suitable for improving beginners who have been playing for a while but would like some extra help in moving on. Fingerstyle guitar uses right hand fingers to play note patterns as an alternative to strumming and is used in a wide variety of styles and accompanying songs. This workshop will explore different finger-picking patterns for different songs and see how capos help us use “friendly” open chords in various keys. We look at how classical guitarists play and explore one simple impressive classical piece, as well as looking at ‘self-accompanied’ playing where we play melody and accompaniment at the same time. Notes will be provided. To benefit from this workshop you need to have been playing for at least 6-12 months and be able to play most of chords G, C, D, A, E, F, Am, Dm, Em, Bm, F#m, B7, G7, F7.
Intro to Music Recording and Production Part 2 Adult/15+ Workshop Date: Saturday 24 February,10am-4pm Workshop fee: £48 This workshop follows on from Intro to Music Recording and Production Part 1and will look in more depth at microphone technique, effects and processors, synthesis, MIDI, mixing and mastering, and the techniques you need to create great recordings in your own home or DIY studio. The workshop uses MAC computer and Logic Software, but in a way that also covers the principles that apply generally across other Digital Audio Workstations software such as Ableton, Cubase and Sonar. If you play an instrument, please bring it along for the afternoon recording session.

In this workshop you’ll learn how to develop your right-hand finger co-ordination through finger exercises and through playing simple but impressive classical style pieces as examples.
