Sam Sweeney’s Made in the Great War Date: Sunday 11 June, 8pm Tickets: £21.50

JIM MARSHALL AUDITORIUM

JUNE

In 2009 Sam Sweeney, fiddle player with Bellowhead, bought a violin in Oxford. It had all the appearance of a new instrument but the label inside gave the date 1915 and the name Richard S Howard. Research revealed that the violin had been made – but never finished – by a luthier and some-time music-hall performer from Leeds called Richard Spencer Howard. He had been conscripted in 1915 at the age of 35 and two years later was killed during the battle of Messines Ridge. His violin had been left in his workshop and was finally finished by luthier Roger Claridge in 2007. The fiddle was then placed in the window of an Oxford music shop where it was spotted by Sam. The show brings the reality of the First World War vividly to life through the eyes of an ordinary man, his family and his comrades using story, music and film, with Sam playing the actual fiddle that Richard Howard started but never had the chance to finish. madeinthegreatwar.com James Yorkston, Kris Drever

Manchester’s ferocious folk foursome 4Square are now in their 10th year of wowing audiences from all corners of Europe and beyond. The band’s trademark show features the spectacle of Nicola Lyons’s simultaneous fiddle playing and clog dancing and virtuosic mandolin from Michael Giverin, galvanised by the driving sounds of Jim Molyneux’s piano and Dan Day’s percussion. The result is an infusion of folk, jazz, Latin and any other musical style they feel the inclination to absorb. 4squaremusic.co.uk Urban Folk Quartet

STAGE 2

Megan first came to the attention of the wider world in 2011 following the release of her critically acclaimed debut album Making Waves which saw her songs played on national and regional radio and play-listed on BBC Radio 2. She has since played live in all corners of the UK and is a regular performer at all the bigger UK music festivals; Glastonbury, Cambridge, Larmer Tree, Wilderness and Secret Garden Party among them. Cut to this Spring and Megan has almost completed recording her third solo album which is due for released in September. meganhenwood.com

Sofie Hagen is unquestionably one of the most talked-about comics of the moment. A modern legend in her native Denmark, she burst onto the British scene by winning Best Newcomer at Edinburgh Festival 2015; her 2016 follow-up, Shimmer Shatter, was a second total sell-out. This, her biggest national tour to date, is a brand new show packed with brilliant, offbeat observation, passionate argument, and jokes. like us on facebook British blues band Catfish have carved a reputation for themselves as an excellent live act with a phenomenal frontman in 22-year-old guitarist/vocalist Matt Long. The band received two nominations in the British Blues Awards 2015 and followed this with three more in 2016. They released their much-anticipated second album Broken Man in January which is made up of almost entirely original material. This is blues with a very broad brush – from epic prog anthems to stripped-back piano ballads. catfishbluesband.co.uk

LEARN & TAKE PART

learn and take part The workshop was really enjoyable and at the right level for a beginner – not intimidating as they sometimes can be.

Learning and participation are central to The Stables’ activities, bringing music to the widest possible audience. Our learning and participation programme works with people of all ages and levels of ability and across many musical styles. With lifelong learning at its heart, the programme includes workshops, courses, talks, concerts and training. The Stables aims to encourage people to become involved in music, whether by developing existing skills or offering a musical experience for the first time. The programme offers events for children and young people, through to opportunities for more experienced audiences and music makers. Our outreach work and partnerships aim to support people across the region who may not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in musicmaking activities.

Fantastic course, exactly what I had been looking for and the only one of its type I have managed to find – superb!

Over the following pages you’ll find details of our workshops and courses for the summer. Please call The Stables box office on 01908 280800 to book a place. 46

Facilities for Hearing Impaired Customers The main auditorium is fitted with an Ampetronic system. To use this system you must have a hearing aid with either a switchable or auto-detect T-Setting built in. Stage 2 customers will need to wear a hearing necklace, available from the box office. If you wear a hearing device please inform a member of the box office team when booking your tickets so that they can seat you in the area of the auditorium where the signal is strongest.

Assistance Dogs Assistance dogs are welcome, but please advise us when you book so that we can allocate appropriate seats and inform you of any special effects that might affect your dog’s comfort.
