Founding member, lead singer and bass player of Kansas City bluesrock band Trampled Under Foot, Danielle Nicole stepped out on her own in 2015 with her debut album Wolf Den. She returned last year with a follow-up release via Concord Records. Her distinctive, inventive bass work – which won her the Blues Foundation’s 2014 Blues Music Award for Best Instrumentalist, Bass – is the product of years of intensive roadwork. Although she had no experience with the instrument when she became Trampled Under Foot’s bassist, she now can’t imagine life without it. daniellenicolemusic.com
Tony Momrelle is one of the most exciting and significant soul musicians on the modern British stage. He was lead male vocalist of the famous British acid-jazz band Incognito for more than 16 years before launching his solo career. His acclaimed debut album Keep Pushing was released in 2015, followed by a Deluxe Edition 12 months later. With guest appearances from Talib Kweli, Chantae Cann and Tony Remy, the album offers an infectious mingling of 80s-inspired synths, jazzy keys, classic piano and soaring soul vocals. tonymomrelle.com

Brandishing a shiny brand-new CD, Welcome To The Second Half, the Spookies return to the UK, ever more comfortable with their whimsical humour and musical breadth – a winning spectrum of Georgian songs, pindrop-beautiful ballads, highly inappropriate covers and immaculate man anthem. spookymen.com Blake

Legendary drummer and JCM founder Jon Hiseman died in June 2018. In the last year of his life, Jon formed JCM, a trio with Colosseum members Clem Clempson on guitar and Mark Clarke on bass. The group made an album, Heroes, that contained music written by former collaborators who Jon had outlived, among them Jack Bruce, Allan Holdsworth and Ollie Halsall. Ironically, the album will become a tribute to Hiseman himself. Jon had wished for JCM to continue beyond his death and so the band moves on with Ralph Salmins now on the drums.
Geoff Norcott’s unique brand of provocative stand-up is hitting the road again with Taking Liberties. Whatever the contentious subject, he’ll be honest and blunt. The four-piece take their inspiration from an array of artists including The Weekend, Royal Blood and The 1975, and their original sound has earned them recognition as Best Pop Artist at the NMG awards, Slickest Sound at the NVMAs and Track of the Week with BBC Introducing. aprilblue.co.uk
Heg & The Wolf Chorus have carved a name for themselves over the past six years with their unique brand of theatrical folk. After winning the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2003, the band widened its travels to include the US, Canada and Europe, and has worked steadily on the road and in the studio ever since. Fingerstyle Guitar Part 1: Acoustic Guitar Masterclass Introduction to Finger-Picking with Andrea Valeri Adult/15+ Workshop
Adult/15+ Workshop
Date: Saturday 8 June, 10am-4pm Workshop fee: £35
Date: Sunday 16 June, 2.30-4.30pm Tickets: £12
Intended for guitar ‘strummers’ who want to add other interesting ways of playing, this workshop introduces the use of righthand fingers to play chords by picking individual strings. We’ll cover some basic principles to get everyone on the same page and look at playing in ‘guitar-friendly’ keys. You’ll learn how a capo ‘engineers’ guitar-friendly keys from awkward keys and how you ‘transpose’ chords from difficult keys into these friendly keys. You’ll also explore different picking patterns for various songs and experiment with your own picking patterns. We also look briefly at a ‘selfaccompanied’ style of playing both the tune and accompanying chords at the same time.
One of the world’s leading acoustic guitarists Andrea Valeri shares some of his guitar secrets and stories, tips and techniques in an exclusive guitar masterclass/workshop. This session will be inspiring to all levels of players, including beginners, but is particularly suitable for intermediate and advanced players. Through a mixture of talk, demonstration and playing, Andrea will explore some of the fingerstyle and flat-picking techniques, improvising, soloing, chord voicing and harmonization that feature in stand-out acoustic guitar performance. See Andrea perform live in Stage 2 later on this evening – see page 38 for more details.
To benefit from this workshop you ideally need to have been playing for at least six months and be able to play most of chords G, C, D, A, E, F, Am, Dm, Em, Bm, F#m, B7, G7 and F7. Please bring a guitar (acoustic preferred), guitar tuner and a capo.

The bodhrán (pronounced bow-ran) or Irish frame drum has grown from its use in traditional Irish music to become a popular instrument used across many forms of Celtic, folk and contemporary roots music. This beginner’s level workshop introduces aspiring players to the bodhrán and will include basic techniques, traditional and contemporary rhythms and advice on models/ sticks/diameters etc. You’ll will use the most common tune types (jigs/reels) to explore different styles and techniques of playing and how to build a good foundation for further playing. Instruments will be provided.
So you’ve got the basics down? You can strum and play chords and you can accompany some songs. What next? How about getting beyond chordal accompaniment and into playing melodies? This workshop will look at making song arrangements where the ukulele takes a lead role instead of the voice. Discover how to create more texture in your playing with licks, riffs, solos and good tone production. It’s time to make your ukulele ‘sing’! You will need to bring a soprano, concert or tenor ukulele. Previous attendance at Ukulele Beginners Part 1 & Part 2 is recommended. As we approach the 50th Anniversary of The Stables in 2020, our ambitions include the creation of a new flexible performance and education space, but we also need to ensure that the current facilities are maintained and modernised. Your support now will help us to realise our plans and provide us with a secure platform from which to present world-class concerts and educational opportunities for the next 50 years and beyond. Thank you in advance for your support.
