Stuff and Nonsense Theatre Company present directed by Niki McCretton
Christmas Fun at The Stables
Dates: Monday 19 – Saturday 24 December
“Who will help me plant these grains of wheat?” “Not I” said the Pig. “Not I” said the Rat. “Not I” said the Cow. “Fair enough,” said the Little Red Hen, “I’ll do it myself!” Making bread is hard work, but it would be a lot easier if the lazy farmyard animals got off their reclining sofas and lent a hand! This ingenious adaptation of a much-loved story features a host of animal puppets, sing-along songs and madcap comic routines. It’s a real treat for the whole family with no scary bits whatsoever!

Pianist John Lenehan presents a celebration celebration of the unique music and film of an iconic decade, the fabulous 1920s. Music by Gershwin, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington and Kurt Weill brings to life on-screen appearances from the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Greta Garbo, Harry Houdini and Albert Einstein. The performance also features atmospheric archive film of London, Paris and New York set to the music of the decade.
Folk music can commonly and affectionately be defined as low culture, but The Unthanks aspire to prove that the beauty and truth present in the oral history of the people is anything but common. Their approach to storytelling makes easy bedfellows of tradition and adventure, direct social commentary and sophisticated harmony, and heartbreaking empathy and glacial minimalism, earning them an army of admirers. Described by The Guardian as “the finest instrumental duo on the traditional scene”, Spiers & Boden first rocketed onto the music scene in 2001, quickly winning a clutch of BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and going on to form and front the extraordinarily successful folk big band Bellowhead. The duo reformed in 2021 after a seven-year hiatus, arriving with a new album Fallow Ground, which was a Mojo top 10 folk album of 2021.
Go Now! The Music of The Moody Blues is the brainchild of drummer Gordy Marshall, who toured with the band for 25 years. Together with Mick Wilson (10cc), he has brought together some of the UK’s best musicians to create the ultimate tribute to the greatest classic rock band of a generation. Hit songs such as Nights In White Satin, Go Now and Isn’t Life Strange are beautifully recreated live, and sound as close to the initial recordings as you will ever hear.

Focusing on traditional Scottish music, Ryan Young brings new life to very old, often forgotten tunes by playing them in his own unique way. His fiddle playing is brimming with fresh melodic ideas, an uplifting rhythmic drive and a great depth of dynamics and precision. His sound is very distinctive and takes listeners on an emotional and adventurous journey in any performance.
Jana Varga is a Slovak artist living in London and her music is very much in the timeless singersongwriter traditions of American and British artists of the late 1960s through to the present day. Like all good songwriters, Jana tells her own story, and she fuses Americana and folk with her love of jazz and a classical music background, giving much of her work a trademark added ‘musicality’.

Do you want to grow your song-writing skills, collaborate with other songwriters, learn how to develop your lyrics and your ‘sound’? You’ll explore techniques, tips, and exercises for developing lyrics, telling a ‘story’, and using rhyme, rhythm and melody to get those lyrics across. You’ll also look at some tricky songwriter questions like getting ‘unstuck’, when to move on from a song (or even come back to it) and how do you know when a song is ‘finished’. The focus of the workout is on song creation, not specifically about developing your singing or playing skills, but any singing or playing experience you can bring will be useful. The workout will use a mix real instruments and music technology to help create the songs. The workout is not specifically about recording or production, but will look briefly at use of DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations e.g., Garageband, Cakewalk, Ableton Live, Reaper) as a help to songwriting for capturing and developing your ideas and getting ready for next stage of recording and producing songs.

This beginner’s level workshop introduces aspiring players to the bodhrán and will include basic techniques, traditional and contemporary rhythms and advice on models/ sticks/diameters etc. You’ll will use the most common tune types (jigs/reels) to explore different styles and techniques of playing and how to build a good foundation for further playing. Please bring a bodhran if you have one or contact education@ stables.org if you need to borrow one (limited numbers available).

Get Started with DADGAD Guitar Adult/15+ Workshop Sunday 25 September, 1.30-4.30pm £25 This workshop will explore DADGAD guitar tuning and its application for backing traditional folk tunes and songs. DADGAD is a widely used open tuning and a feature of traditional English, Scottish and Irish music. This workshop is designed for intermediate guitar players who already play in ‘standard’ tuning but would like to explore a new sound. We will first look at some basic chord shapes and learn how to back a tune. Along the way we will learn some basic music theory and how it applies to traditional music, and some tricks of the trade to make your backing more exciting. Players need to be reasonably confident playing chords and chord changes in standard tuning, accompanying songs or dance tunes with different strumming patterns, but no previous experience of DADGAD tuning is needed. If you are not sure that your playing experience is suitable contact education@stables. org for further advice before booking. You’ll need to bring an acoustic guitar, a capo and clip-on guitar tuner.
Mandolin Beginners
Adult/15+ Workshop
Adult/15+ Workshop
Saturday 1 October, 10am-4pm £34
Sunday 9 October, 10am-3pm £37
Whether you are a beginner looking for a way into understanding music, or an intermediate or experienced musician looking for a refresher or to fill gaps in your knowledge, this information-packed day aims to help you demystify music theory. Starting with the most basic terminology and theory, the workshop covers the nature of sound, how music started, what the key of a song is and how to find it and what some of the more complicated ideas mean. The day will be particularly helpful to those taking their first steps in learning to play, whatever the instrument. Please note this day is more of a tutorial than a hands-on workshop and includes supporting notes.
The mandolin is a popular instrument used in a range of styles including country, bluegrass, traditional folk and Irish music. It is great as a melody or rhythm instrument and this workshop will introduce both styles of playing. It will look at basic technique, simple tunes, chord shapes and progressions, and playing as a group and is suitable for those who have some basic experience of stringed instruments (such as guitar, ukulele, banjo, bouzouki, violin) and who can play basic open chords and a few scales of tunes. An ability to read tablature is useful but not essential. Please bring a mandolin if you have one or contact education@stables.org if you need to borrow one (limited numbers available).
Introduction to Live Sound Engineering Adult/15+ Workshop Saturday 8 October, 10am-4pm £40
Are you an aspiring sound engineer? Or a musician who wants to understand how to use PA and get a better sound at your gigs? This workshop offers a basic introduction to the world of live sound engineering. It will cover types of microphones and placement, basic parts of a PA, how to use a mixing desk and how to use basic EQ. This course is suitable for complete beginners or for those who have gaps in their understanding of live sound.

Basic Principles of Music
Singing Lead Vocals & Microphone Technique Adult/15+ Workshop Sunday 9 October, 12.30-4pm £27 For singers who want to explore some of the technical, artistic and practical aspects of singing with a microphone. Perhaps you already sing in a choir, or play in a band, and want to try solo or lead vocals? You’ll look at equipment essentials, microphone technique and which mic to use, understanding monitoring, fold back and live mixing to get the best out of your sound, how to approach different styles of music such as rock, pop or jazz and how to tackle the challenges of fronting a band, whatever the size. You’ll also look at how ‘phrasing’ can help with the challenges of some songs and have a go at singing with backing tracks and stripped-down guitar accompaniment. Participants will be sent a short list of songs to listen to and get familiar with before the workshop. Please note his workshop is not a ‘singing lesson’ as such and won’t be about general singing technique, and you’ll need enough singing experience to know you want to have a go at singing solo.

Ukulele Beginners Part 2 Adult/15+ Workshop Saturday 15 October, 10am-3pm £36 This workshop is ideal for beginner ukulele players to develop their playing further. Building on Beginners Part 1, this workshop will help you to develop your rhythm and melody playing skills, add new chords and combine different strokes for rhythmic effects. Using a mix of contemporary and vintage material, you’ll also get the chance to practice as a ukulele band and try out playing the melody, accompanying and adding colour to the musical arrangements. Previous attendance at Ukulele Beginners Part 1 is recommended and you will need to bring a soprano-, tenor- or concert-sized ukulele.
Harmonica Beginners Part 2 Adult/15+ Workshop Saturday 22 October, 10am-3pm £34
Introduction to Music Recording & Production Part 1 Adult/15+ Workshop Saturday 22 October, 10am-4pm £48 Our popular course for anyone who would like a basic introduction to recording and production using music technology, looking at microphone techniques, recording different instruments, and production techniques. The workshop uses MAC computer and Logic Software, but uses them to look at the principles that apply generally across Digital Audio Workstations software such as Ableton, Cubase and Sonar. You will focus on recording and production rather than just creating within the software and you’ll be able to take away audio files of tracks produced to further practice the skills you’ve learned. If you play an instrument, please bring it along for the afternoon recording session to learn how best to record it. (The Part 2 follow-on workshop on Saturday 3 December looks in more detail into studio-based recording and production.) LATE ENTRY
Refresher Sax from Scratch Saturday 30 July, 9.30am-12.30pm £26

This session will consolidate the work you have already done on improvisation, tune playing and chugging at the Beginners Part 1 workshop and move on to the fundamental blues technique of note bending. Participants will need a 10-hole harmonica in C. Prior attendance on Beginners Part 1 is recommended.
