Elio Pace

JIM MARSHALL AUDITORIUM

Elio Pace presents an intimate and unique concert honouring his childhood idol Elvis Presley. Elio’s sensational singing and electrifying piano playing are ingeniously accompanied on stage by the dynamic and percussive power of drummer Steve Rushton, coupled with insightful and moving anecdotes about Elvis’s life and career. Never before will you have seen or heard the great man’s catalogue presented like this – and not a white jumpsuit in sight! eliopace.com

Following a sell-out national tour in 2017, Ed Gamble is back with another bracing flurry of idiocy. As seen on Mock The Week, The Russell Howard Hour, Comedy Central At The Comedy Store, The Apprentice You’re Fired, Man Down and Conan – and a short film he can’t remember the name of in which he killed a man from The Bill with a spade. Zog tries so very hard, perhaps too hard, and he bumps, burns and roars his way through years one, two and three. Luckily, the plucky Princess Pearl patches him up, ready to face his biggest challenge yet – a duel with Gadabout the Great! Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s much-loved Zog comes to life in Mike Shepherd’s magical adaptation with Johnny Flynn’s sumptuous folk score featuring live musicians. Katie Sykes’ design lifts the book from the page and creates a real and fantastical world. Sam Sweeney: The Unfinished Violin Date: F riday 3 May, 8pm Tickets: £20

MAY

Sam Sweeney is a veteran of the mighty Bellowhead’s domination of British folk for 10 years. He is artistic director of the National Folk Youth Ensemble, founder member of the acclaimed instrumental trio Leveret and a superb instrumentalist at the forefront of the revival in English traditional music.

Pre-concert talk: 7-7.30pm (tickets are free to concert ticket holders but must be booked in advance) Come and hear Sam talk about the story behind the album, how he put it together and made the tunes come alive. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions!

Last September Sam released his first solo album, The Unfinished Violin, a development of his acclaimed live show, Sam Sweeney’s Fiddle: Made In The Great War, which toured from 2014 until last year. It centred on a fiddle the 19-year-old Sweeney came across in a violin shop in Oxford, made but not assembled by one Richard S Howard of Harehills, Leeds, in 1915. It’s the instrument Sweeney has used for numerous albums and countless gigs. In time he set about digging into its history and uncovered the fateful tale of Richard Howard, a music hall performer called up in 1916 only to lose his life in the Battle of Messines on 7 June 1917. samsweeneymusic.com Gilmore & Roberts

The Marmen Quartet are former holders of Sheffield-based Music in the Round’s ‘Bridge’ Quartet Residency and in 2018 won the prestigious Annual Royal Overseas League Competition. This recital begins with the first of Haydn’s Op.50 quartets, an enchanting work dedicated to the King of Prussia, himself an enthusiastic cellist. Ligeti’s masterful first quartet was completed in 1954, but owing to the political situation in Hungary was only premiered in 1958 in Vienna. Beethoven’s late quartets stand at the pinnacle of classical chamber music and, anecdotally, the Opus 131 quartet in C sharp minor was the composer’s own favourite.

After three hugely successful series of Lee Nelson on the BBC, multiple TV appearances (Live at the Apollo, Sunday Night at The Palladium, C4’s Comedy Gala), and several world-famous stunts on the likes of Donald Trump, Kanye West & Sepp Blatter, Simon unveils his funniest persona yet; himself. Tracey Browne & Stevie Simpson

Heg & The Wolf Chorus have carved a name for themselves over the past six years with their unique brand of theatrical folk. Drawing inspiration from folklore, fairytales, family stories and even modern-day myths, their piano-driven songs blend together folk, theatre and classical in dramatic execution. With a core group of four musicians playing piano, flute, fiddle and double bass, and led by songwriter Heg Brignall’s bright and enchanting vocals, the south-west-based band use tight four-part harmonies to give a cinematic depth to their songs. hegandthewolfchorus.com

Tracey Browne is a singersongwriter, multiinstrumentalist, session singer and producer from the northwest of England and is known for her work with acclaimed British songwriter Thea Gilmore. With a brand new studio album The Doctrine of Song, Tracey brings a solo show which features piano, acoustic guitar and tenor guitar, along with her own distinctive voice. These days a Stevie Simpson live show is pretty much what it says on the tin: One Bloke, One Mandolin (well two really) playing a whole bunch of original folk and country songs. traceybrowne.co.uk oneblokeonemandolin.com

Date: Saturday 8 June, 10am-4pm Workshop fee: £48

Date: Sunday 16 June, 2.30-4.30pm Tickets: £12

Join us in The Stables’ studio and control room for this music technology and recording workshop and hands-on studio session. Our popular one-day introduction is ideal for beginners or those who want a refresher. The workshop will use a MAC computer and Logic Software, but in a way that looks at the general principles that apply across all DAWS (Digital Audio Workstations) software such as Ableton, Cubase, Sonar. You will focus on recording and production rather than just creating within the software and you’ll be able to take away audio files of tracks produced to further practice the skills you’ve learned. If you play an instrument, please bring it along for the afternoon recording session to learn how best to record it. (A Part 2 follow-on workshop on 13 July will look in more detail at studio-based recording and production.)

One of the world’s leading acoustic guitarists Andrea Valeri shares some of his guitar secrets and stories, tips and techniques in an exclusive guitar masterclass/workshop. This session will be inspiring to all levels of players, including beginners, but is particularly suitable for intermediate and advanced players. Through a mixture of talk, demonstration and playing, Andrea will explore some of the fingerstyle and flat-picking techniques, improvising, soloing, chord voicing and harmonization that feature in stand-out acoustic guitar performance.

Harmonica Beginners Part 2 Adult/15+ Workshop Date: S aturday 15 June, 10am-3pm Workshop fee: £33 Our popular one-day harmonica workshops continue with this Beginners Part 2 day. This session will consolidate the work you have already done on improvisation, tune playing and chugging at the Beginners Part 1 workshop and move on to the fundamental blues technique of note bending. Participants will need a 10-hole harmonica in C. Prior attendance on Beginners Part 1 is recommended.

See Andrea perform live in Stage 2 later on this evening – see page 44 for more details.

Songwriting Beginners Workshop Adult/15+ Workshop Date: S aturday 22 June, 10am-3pm Workshop fee: £37 Unlock your creative potential as a songwriter with a day of inspiring techniques lead by singersongwriter Sara Spade. Whether you already play an instrument or are just interested in the lyrics, this course aims to give you the tools you need to get started, get crafting and finish your own songs, in a safe and fun atmosphere. In individual and co-writing exercises you will share your songs and begin to develop the openness and ability to give and listen to constructive feedback. We will also analyse some of your favourite songs, their structure, elements and what it is that makes them work for you, so you can think about other approaches to songwriting. You’ll also look at some of the areas where songwriters need help, such as how to ignore ‘the self-critic’, healthy writers’ habits, listening to the inner voice, ‘noticing’ good ideas, throwing ideas away, developing your identity and unblocking a ‘writer’s block’. If you play an instrument please bring it along. Some keyboards are available – contact education@ stables.org if you think you may need one.
