Virgil and the Accelerators with support from Aaron Keylock Date: Tuesday 4 March, 8pm Tickets: £12.50
Fame: our society is obsessed with it – but who will talk honestly about what it’s really like? David Baddiel, in his first full show for 15 years, does just that. From accidentally stealing the spotlight at Russell Brand’s wedding, to realising Andrew Lloyd Webber cannot tell him apart from Ben Elton, David takes aim at himself and examines his strange relationship with the New Lad/token Jew/comedy rock’n’roller/football singer-songwriter that people see him as. A “very funny and thought-provoking” (Daily Telegraph) meditation on a life lived in – and out – of fame.
“as a trio there is not much that can touch them and the way Virgil wields his guitar would scare even the most seasoned pro, he is simply that good” Firebrand magazine

April 2013 saw the release of Live At Marshall, a spectacular DVD capture of their stunning sold-out show at the holy grail of sound, Marshall Amplification. Their live set is jaw-dropping and they are a must-see band.

The reunion of this classic band is due to the recent discovery of some previously unheard live recordings made by their former sound engineer. These recordings, made at the Cambridge Folk Festival in 1986, exhibit a power and commitment that was never fully captured in the studio, so a live album release became inevitable. The reformed band, in virtually its original line-up, has since enjoyed dozens of major gigs and their reformation has proved to be a resounding success, receiving ecstatic ovations from audiences. In 2012 the band won Best Live Act at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards – truly the icing on the cake! “blistering... truculent folk-rock” ***** The Financial Times

Georgia Ruth Date: Tuesday 22 April, 8.45pm Tickets: £10 in advance, £12 on the door Raised bilingually in Aberystwyth, West Wales, Georgia Ruth is a singer-songwriter and harpist whose haunting voice has drawn favourable comparisons with the melancholy folk sirens of the late-1960s. Her harp playing is inspired more by the finger-picking style of guitarists such as Bert Jansch and Meic Stevens than by the classical method she was taught as a child. In May 2013, she released her debut album Week of Pines, receiving enthusiastic praise. From the motorik drive of the title track to darker, Eno-like arrangements, the stark joyfulness of a Welsh sea shanty accompanied by wheezing reed organ or the more wistful folk ballads, it is a varied and intriguing collection of songs. “Georgia Ruth comes over as more of a true original than most of the young hopefuls roaming these isles” Folk Roots magazine

Hat Fitz is a veteran wild man of the blues scene in Australia. He has a record 18 straight appearances at Byron’s East Coast Blues and Roots Festival bearing testimony to his amazing live performances and popularity with festival-goers. Cara draws on her soul background (she’s toured Europe and the US with singers such as Jamiroquai and the hugely popular Corrine Bailey-Rae), and although blessed with a sensational voice she was not content to be labelled as ‘just a singer’. She has taken to drumming duties as well as washboards, flute and tin whistle, sometimes all at once.
Following his sellout show in 2013, songwriter, vocalist and piano man Andy returns to the Stables with his full band. Described as “sultry… engrossing… dynamic and cinematic”, Andy’s new album Takin’ Aim has been getting airplay and rave reviews in the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium and the US. Once a regular at the Stables with his old band The Christians, Henry Priestman (the writer behind all those Christians’ hits in the 1980s and Yachts’ songs in the 1970s) has reinvented himself as a singer-songwriter. In 2008 he released his debut solo CD The Chronicles of Modern Life to critical acclaim and considerable BBC Radio 2 airplay. Now at last, he’s ready to release the eagerly awaited follow-up entitled The Last Mad Surge of Youth and having discovered a love of live work (mixing ramshackle chaos and tear-jerking poignancy in equal measures!), he’s heading out on the road this Spring. Expect a few of the old hits as well as songs from both of his excellent solo albums.
24 May 2014 is the 73rd birthday of Bob Dylan and the 195th birthday of Queen Victoria. It’s also acclaimed folk songstress Bella Hardy’s 30th. To mark the occasion, Bella is taking the party on the road with her band The Midnight Watch and embarking on an epic adventure to visit 30 of her favourite venues, celebrating her six solo albums to date. One of the most creative, prolific and original singers in the UK, Bella has a captivating voice that inhabits her characters and spins her stories with an equal balance of strength and sensitivity. With fiddle in hand, she presents folk songs in the best tradition; not as antiquated museum pieces, but as relevant and very human artworks.

Adult/15+ Workshop
An informationpacked day that aims to demystify music theory – perfect for beginners looking for a way into understanding music, as well as for intermediate or experienced musicians looking for a refresher or to fill gaps in their knowledge. Starting with the most basic terminology and theory, the day covers the nature of sound, how music started, pitch, scales, and chords, what the key of a song is and how to find it, and what some of the more complicated ideas mean. The day will be particularly helpful to those taking their first steps in learning to play, whatever the instrument. Course leader Pete Normanton is a highly experienced musician and guitar teacher, specialising in making music accessible to non-musicians. Tea/coffee provided. Snack bar open at lunchtime.
Harmonica Workshop – Beginners Part 2 Adult/15+ Workshop
Date: Saturday 17 May, 10am-3pm Workshop fee: £32
Joff Watkins returns for one of our popular one-day harmonica workshops. Beginners Part 2 will consolidate the work you have already done on improvisation, tuneplaying and chugging, and move on to the fundamental blues technique of note bending. You will need to bring a 10-hole harmonica in C. Prior attendance on Beginners Part 1 is recommended. Tea/coffee provided. Snack bar open at lunchtime.
Adult/15+ Course
A fantastic opportunity to learn how to construct and re-skin a djembe, the popular African drum. The course fee covers the provision of high-quality materials for building your drum, including a ready-carved drum shell, rings, rope and goat-skin, as well as use of all the tools and equipment needed to make your drum. You will be given step-by-step instruction on what to do and importantly what not to do, aiming to expel some urban myths about drum-making. After taking your drum home to dry, we’ll run a half-day drum tuning session. The course is suitable for all but it does involve physical effort and dexterity to make the drum – please contact education@ stables.org for further information. The course is led by experienced African drum-maker and repairer Annie Beddoe, a founder member of the Moribayassa African Drumming Community Group.
