While his music is steeped in ancient West African traditions, this modest and soft-spoken man is also a staunch innovator and musical adventurer. For his latest project, At Peace, Sissoko gathers trusted, long-time musical companions on guitars and balafon; together, the four musicians produce music that is remarkable for its sophistication, conversation and the art of weaving sound into a cascade of almost liquid lacework. Indie-folk-chamberpop maestros The Leisure Society perform songs from their new album Alone aboard the Ark which sees them expand their arcadian, Baroque pop sound with a more diverse and inventive orchestration. Coming from the same canon as The Divine Comedy and Mull Historical Society, Nick Hemming’s gentle indie anthems revel in acoustic guitars, pianos, harps and infectious melodies. Elbow’s Guy Garvey pronounced the heartwarming and beautiful single The Last Of The Melting Snow his favourite song of 2009, and Radio 2’s Radcliffe and Maconie promptly made it their Record of the Week. www.theleisuresociety.co.uk Opera North, Crow’s Bones

Date: Friday 10 January, 8pm Tickets: £16

Crows’ Bones is a mesmerising collection of ghost songs old and new, pinpointing the essence of what is most beautiful and unsettling in the folk genre. Led by Lau accordionist Martin Green, it’s performed by a specially assembled group of folk luminaries made up of Becky Unthank (The Unthanks), nykelharpist Niklas Roswall and singer Inge Thomson (Karine Polwart band). Drawing together songs of murderous visitations and unnatural happenings, Crows’ Bones takes you deep into a musical hinterland of broken music boxes and twisted gramophones to reveal the dark heart of folk song.

Fresh from a record-breaking season of shows at London’s Soho Theatre and a sell-out season at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, South African comedian Trevor Noah is proud to present his critically acclaimed show, The Racist, on a ground-breaking tour of the UK. Trevor’s sharp wit and unmistakable charm have established him as a popular performer with undoubted world-class potential. (May contain strong language and adult material, suitable for 16+)

Folk rebels Mawkin, fresh off the back of the three-times BBC Folk Award-nominated collaboration Mawkin:Causley, are now forging a bold new sound that strengthens their instrumental roots and embraces a new, exuberant exploration into the traditional folk canon from the British isles and beyond. The “unconditionally mighty” (Mojo magazine) four-piece have augmented their sound with the addition of long-time producer Lee Richardson on drums and percussion. It’ll also be the first time that Mawkin will be interpreting traditional songs with singing duties shared between the band; a brave new direction indeed!

From their beginnings as three actors who loved to sing together, The Once have embraced a different vision of Newfoundland music. Their sounds do not come from the noisy pubs and dockside taverns that fuel so much of the Island’s energy, but from a quieter and more thoughtful place. Hope and tragedy are intertwined in their music, whether they are singing an old lament from World War I or original songs that speak of love defeated. Lead singer Geraldine Hollett is accompanied by Phil Churchill and Andrew Dale on guitar, mandolin, fiddle and bouzouki. www.theonce.ca
