Between December 2013 and March 2014, we’ll be presenting more than 130 concerts and performances in a programme that takes in everything from jazz to folk, blues to classical and soul to reggae… as well as some great stand-up comedy. We’re proud to bring you some of the finest artists and ensembles performing anywhere in the UK today.

This Christmas, Proteus Theatre Company cordially invites you to follow them down the rabbit hole to The Stables for some amazing adventures in Wonderland – oh, and tea, of course.
No storm in a teacup, this show promises to provide all your six impossible things a day, so whatever you do – don’t be late! And if you stick around after the performance then you may also get the chance to meet the cast and characters at the front of the stage.
From the artistic team behind last year’s popular production of The Secret Garden, Proteus will once again be bringing their trademark fusion of music, physical theatre, circus and puppetry creating an anarchic, magical and mad-as-a-hatter version of Lewis Carroll’s classic tales Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through The Looking Glass.

The Leisure Society
with support from Alessi’s Ark Ballaké Sissoko is one of Mali’s greatest exponents of the kora, the 21-stringed harp of the Manding people. While his music is steeped in ancient West African traditions, this modest and soft-spoken man is also a staunch innovator and musical adventurer. For his latest project, At Peace, Sissoko gathers trusted, long-time musical companions on guitars and balafon; together, the four musicians produce music that is remarkable for its sophistication, conversation and the art of weaving sound into a cascade of almost liquid lacework. Richard Durrant, known as the Guitar Whisperer, is a worldclass virtuoso with an imaginative flair for presentation and a warm, easy rapport that has endeared him to audiences across the world. ‘Blues Boy’ Dan Owen is a young singer-songwriter from Shrewsbury who performs rootsy-blues influenced songs on guitar with the help of his home-made stomp box and occasional harmonica. A YouTube video performance of Dan singing Bob Dylan’s Ballad of Hollis Brown attracted the attention of Mick Fleetwood who has since taken Dan under his wing as mentor. The Sirkis/Bialas project is a fresh new collaboration between Israeli-UK-resident drummer/percussionist Asaf Sirkis, known for his work with the Lighthouse Trio and Gilad Atzmon as well as his own trio, and Polish vocalist extraordinaire Sylwia Bialas. In this practical workshop, blues musician Joff Watkins demystifies V-IV-Is, turnarounds, shuffles and basic bass lines, and introduces fundamental blues techniques such as finger-picking, hammer-ons and pull-offs, using examples from classic blues recordings. You will need to bring a six-string acoustic guitar. Joff is an accomplished blues player who combines performing and teaching, including leading the Stables’ popular blues harmonica workshops. Dates: Sunday 16 February AND Sunday 16 March, 10am-4pm Workshop fee: £50 (two days) We are delighted to welcome back vocal animateur Gitika Partington for our annual Big Sing event. This one-day workshop will include an exciting mix of a cappella arrangements in a variety of musical styles, and is suitable for beginners, community choirs and anyone interested in harmony singing. Gitika is a highly experienced workshop leader who has worked with all ages and abilities. John Bowman leads a fun day for young players who want to develop their listening and playing skills without the use of written music. The workshop is open to all instrumentalists aged 12 and over. You need to be familiar with basic scales and arpeggios on your instrument. Please bring a packed lunch. Bursaries are available – contact the Stables’ Learning & Participation department for details education@stables.org
The Ceilidh Experience is for anyone interested in traditional and folk music who would like the chance to play in a band and play at a ceilidh. During the sessions you’ll learn tunes and come together as small ceilidh bands, getting ready to perform at a final event for dancers and folk fans of all ages. You’ll also have the opportunity to practice with a ‘caller’ and work on a professional stage with sound equipment. Suitable for any instrument, but acoustic instruments are especially welcome. You should already be able to play tunes from memory, ideally at ‘dance speed’, and be prepared to do some tune practice between sessions.

Glitch Jam is suitable for anyone who wants to develop their use of music technology in a live/performance setting. This could include DJs wanting to expand their performance options, band members seeking electronic sounds to add to their set or groups and individuals who want to broaden their sonic palette. A range of kit will be available to play with, based around Macbooks and iPads running Logic Pro, Ableton, NI plugins and a range of apps. You are welcome to bring your own kit/controllers and software especially if you want to develop ideas with a specific software/ controller set-up.

A day of discussion, reflection and practice-sharing for music leaders and practitioners who have taken part in orchestral and technology fusion projects and previous Urban Orchestra projects and CPD. This event is presented as part of the Youth Music Spotlighting practice programme. Please contact education@stables.org for more information.
This one-day workshop is for anyone new to hand-drumming or interested in finding out more about conga drumming or LatinAmerican rhythms. You’ll learn basic techniques, including palm/finger movements, hand shapes for producing open tones, bass tones and slap, as well as exercises for developing tone, independence and coordination. You’ll then move on to Brazillian and Cuban rhythms, with parts for one, two and three drums, and learn how the individual lines fit together with bell patterns and the ‘clave’ rhythm. By the end of the day you will have plenty of ideas to continue practicing as well as full notes of what has been covered. Ravin ‘Raz’ Jayasuriya is a professional percussionist and award-winning tutor with more than 20 years’ experience specialising in Cuban and Brazilian music. He runs workshops and courses for all levels of ability throughout the UK.

Aimed at those who have attended the Waves and Raves 1 course or who already have some experience of music technology, this follow-up course will introduce microphone technique, effects and processors, synthesis, MIDI, mixing and mastering – in short, everything you need to create great pieces of music in your own home. Admission includes a resource pack and a copy of a CD that participants will create during the session. If you play an instrument, please bring it along for the afternoon recording session. Tea/coffee provided. Snack bar open at lunchtime.
The clawhammer style of five-string banjo is the traditional Appalachian folk style, which is now used to play a wide range of folk tunes from around the world. Its rhythmic drive makes it fun and addictive to play. Leading banjo player and teacher Ed Hicks will take you from the beginnings of playing clawhammer banjo to being able to play your first tunes on the instrument, covering techniques such as hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides and melodic style playing. Learning will be done by ear, but tab will be provided at the end of the day. You will need your own five-string banjo. The course is suitable for players who have already begun to learn banjo and are looking to develop their technique and repertoire.

Joff Watkins returns with another workshop to help you move on with blues guitar. You will learn about 12-bar progressions, the blues scale and shuffle rhythms in more depth, through tunes by Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Jimmy Reed and John Lee Hooker. You will need to bring a sixstring acoustic guitar. Previous attendance on Beginners Part 1 is recommended. Joff is an accomplished blues player who combines a performing and teaching career in both harmonica and guitar, including leading the Stables’ highly popular blues harmonica workshops. Are you an aspiring sound engineer? Or a musician who wants to understand how to use PA and get a better sound at your gigs? This workshop offers a basic introduction to the world of live sound engineering and will cover types of microphone and placement, basic parts of a PA, how to use a mixing desk and how to use basic EQ. This course is suitable for complete beginners or for people who have gaps in their understanding of live sound. Tea/coffee provided. Snack bar open at lunchtime.

Beginners Part 2 will consolidate the work you have already done in Beginners Part 1 on improvisation, tune-playing and chugging and move on to the fundamental blues technique of note-bending. From orchestral playing to jazz improvisation, from harmonica sessions to steel pan performance, from music theatre production to recorder and rock bands, the National Youth Music Camps has it all.
