Red Shed is the third part in a trilogy that started with the multi-award-winning shows Bravo Figaro and Cuckooed. Comedian and campaigner Mark Thomas returns to the place where he first started to perform in public: a red wooden shed in Wakefield, the Labour Club, to celebrate the club’s 50th birthday. Interviewing old friends and comrades, he pieces together the club’s history and works with it to campaign with some of the poorest workers in the country for their rights. It’s the story of the battle for hope and the survival of a community in a small wooden shed. Andy Fairweather Low first came to prominence as the lead singer in Amen Corner. The 1960s saw the band clock up hit after pop hit with tracks including Bend Me Shape Me, Hello Suzy and (If Paradise is) Half As Nice. But if you were paying close attention, you might have picked up a clue to Andy’s future musical collaborations in the magnificent blues track Gin House. Since the early days he has gone on to work with Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Roger Waters and hundreds more. andyfairweatherlow.com

In his 60 years on this planet, comedy writer and performer Andy Hamilton has experienced many changes. For instance, he was once a 6 foot 4 inch-tall professional basketball player, until a tree fell on him. But, of course, change is an inescapable part of the human condition. Why? Is that fair? Some changes are good, some bad. Why can’t they be more clearly labelled? How did we end up working longer hours? Where did all the sparrows go? If you’re feeling flustered because of flux, Andy will teach you how to cope with the changes we have seen and the changes yet to come. Contains mild peril. The Benyounes Quartet have been charming audiences with the freshness of their playing and compelling musical interpretations and we are delighted to welcome them back to The Stables. For this recital they have chosen one of Mozart’s most relaxed and charming quartets, the last substantial work that Beethoven completed and Debussy’s groundbreaking string quartet. First performed in 1893, this sensuous piece immediately shows the influence of the Javanese music that Debussy heard at the famous Paris Exposition of 1889, and his beautifully subtle treatment of light and shade conjures up the artistic approach of his renowned contemporary, Claude Monet. benyounesquartet.com

Benjamin Bloom’s Last Man On Earth is a rock musical like no other, where live rock concert meets musical, circus, cabaret and cinema. Featuring the original songs of singer and piano maestro Benjamin Bloom and his fantastic band, the show tells the story of how the world went mad with greed and the unlikely hero who stepped up to save the day. The live music is punctuated by jaw-dropping circus and bedazzling cabaret acts, while the story is narrated in stunning video by TV legend Hugo Myatt, of cult 80s show Knightmare. Two acclaimed English songwriters and label mates touring together for the first time, both with new albums (due to be released on the same day, September 2 2016). Boo Hewerdine is well known as one of the greatest (and busiest) songwriter performers in the business, but incredibly, it’s been seven years since Boo released his last studio album of original material. Dan’s career to date is a story of slow burn success, built upon positive word of mouth for his three self-released recordings and the many thousands of long, hard miles he’s spent touring around Europe, opening for a diverse range of talented artists including Josh Ritter, Julian Cope, Maria McKee, Mark Eitzel, Jesca Hoop, Peter Green, Richard Thompson, Lau, Sun Kill Moon and Willy Mason.

Passionate yet indefinable, Richard Navarro’s songs have drawn praise from none other than Robert Plant and Joan Armatrading, with tracks from his 2015 album Let Go Light gaining regular radio play across the UK, Mexico, Japan and Australia. Richard will be joined by double bassist Nicholas Thurston, combining epic, soaring vocals with punchy, post-folk arrangements of songs that mix lyricism and sharp social commentary with violins, keys, infectious bass lines and driving percussion. The duo’s show also features extraordinary live projected illustrations and animations drawn by Nicholas himself. richardnavarro.co.uk

This fast-paced workshop is designed to de-mystify the process of making up the chords to a song and to help you learn how chords are made up and put together in a sequence. Suitable for guitarists, keyboard players and anyone else wanting to make up chords to songs, the workshop includes a hands-on opportunity to try out the techniques you need to make up your own chord progressions. Full notes will be supplied to take away. You should already have some understanding of scales and chords (e.g. from our Basic Principles of Music workshop). Whether you are a beginner looking for a way into understanding music, or an intermediate or experienced musician looking for a refresher or to fill gaps in your knowledge, this informationpacked day aims to help you de-mystify music theory. Starting with the most basic terminology and theory, the workshop covers the nature of sound, how music started, what the key of a song is and how to find it and what some of the more complicated ideas mean. The day will be particularly helpful to those taking their first steps in learning to play, whatever the instrument. Please note this day is more of a tutorial than a hands-on workshop, and includes supporting notes. Course leader Pete Normanton is a highly experienced musician and guitar teacher, specialising in making music accessible to the nonmusician. Tea/coffee provided. Snack bar open at lunchtime.

This course expands on the Introduction to Live Sound Engineering course, putting it into practice and working with a live band on stage in the main auditorium at The Stables. If you work with, or want to work with, live musicians, this course will be an aid to seeing how the components of a live sound system work together, optimising the sound from the stage monitors, communicating with the band, effectively positioning microphones, balancing the mix and using effects and dynamic processors efficiently and creatively. You’ll review the key concepts from the part 1 workshop before looking in more detail at the PA system in the main auditorium. You’ll then work in two smaller groups, swapping over practical exercises. Each group will rig the stage, sound-check and run a short performance with the band while the other practices on a small digital desk and PA, setting up signal paths using dynamic and effect processors and becoming familiar with EQ operation and feedback control. Questions are welcome at all times and professional support is on hand throughout the day. Participants should have attended The Stables’ Introduction to Live Sound Engineering: Level 1 and/or be familiar with the operation and functions of a live sound desk, a graphic equaliser, effect units and stage monitors. You will be using Yamaha M7 and LS9 digital mixing desks – previous experience using a digital desk is not essential but would be an advantage.
