EVENTING ACADEMY Schooling Horse Trials
December 18-19, 2021
welcome
We’d like to welcome you to the first Eventing Academy of the 2022 Eventing Year. With a very crowded December in terms of Eventing choices in Aiken, we’re very grateful that you’ve come to Stable View. Please don’t forget that the 2021 Eventing Academy prizes will be awarded from 12:00 to 12:30pm on Sunday. Please come and congratulate the winners. For the February Eventing Academy, we will be going back to the original format with Schooling on Saturday and Unrecognized Horse Trials on Sunday. March will have the Schooling on Friday and Unrecognized Horse Trials on Saturday, as to not clash with Full Gallop's Sunday event. After that, and going forward, we will be sticking to the original Saturday/Sunday format. We apologize for the changes. The reason for having made changes to the format for December's event was to account for loss of daylight, however, we've found it isn't necessary with the number of entries we have. Over the past few weeks, we’ve completed a number of safety improvements to our facility. You may also notice upgrades to our sound system and wi-fi. Please feel free to connect with the password "agatheringplace". Exciting news! The moment the last rider leaves the Start Box on Sunday, Attwood Equestrian Surfaces will be starting to build our newest arena out by the Boyd Martin/ETB Schooling Field. Designed as a warm up arena, it will take a full size Dressage Court or three sets of Stadium warm up jumps. This will alleviate crowding in the existing arena and allow it to be used to its total size. We’re intending it will be ready for January’s Aiken Opener. Speaking of the Aiken Opener, it looks like entries will be closing early. At this time of year we can only take 300 entries. This will be the first event at which we will be offering light snacks and sodas etc. These will be available at the two main Rider Lounges - by Springfield Church Road and in the Hunt Boxes. This is going to become a feature of recognized events and Eventing Academies where more than 100 riders are present. If you are staying in Aiken for the winter, we hope that you will make Stable View a part of your winter regimen. With best wishes and Happy Holidays The Stable View Team

A BIRDER'S PARADISE
FREE TO BEE Having started in early spring with five nucleus colonies (also known as "nucs") from a local bee supplier, Stable View's bees have grown to eleven, almost twelve, hives with healthy queens. Over the summer, we have supported the bees' efforts to build up and prepare for winter. Our goal is to contribute to healthy pollinators in our area, and share the sweet fruits of their labor!
This time last year, Stable View had one resident Red-Cockaded Woodpecker. Today, we have ten (six adults and four juveniles)! Additionally, by increasing our number of nest boxes we have helped many of our feathered friends thrive: this year, we have fledged 200+ Eastern Bluebirds (an increase of 50% compared to last year); a pair of Eastern Screech Owls fledged two young; and the American Kestrels fledged all five nestlings from the same nest box as in previous years. According to our expert, Mark Pavlosky of MPJ Wildlife, we expect to observe many migrant species working their way South early this fall. We look forward to hosting bird watchers who wish to view native, rare, or endangered species on their lists!
HISTORICALLY, "A GATHERING PLACE" Set out afoot–or ahoof–on our 15 miles of marked trails, each named in honor of local Native American tribes, where you may see evidence of our prescribed fires, which increase plant diversity, perpetuate endangered species, allow wildlife easier access to food sources, restore nutrients back into the soil, and reduce the risk of wildfires.

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT Interview with Morgan Batton
To many of us around town, you are synonymous with The Hitch & Tow! Are you from Aiken? I grew up in Southern Pines, North Carolina, which is very similar to Aiken! In 2005 my family moved to Rock Hill, South Carolina, just south of Charlotte. I've lived in Aiken full time since 2017. What is the story behind The Hitch & Tow? Paul (my husband) and I started selling trailers on the side while in college. For me, it was horse money! Any memorable experiences worth sharing in the early days of business? One time, Paul and I went to buy a trailer for sale off of an ad on Craigslist. It was three hours away in the mountains of North Carolina, and when we finally got there it was pretty backwoods and the trailer looked nothing like the ad described. It turns out, the guy was getting divorced, so to spite him, his soon-to-be ex-wife listed a much nicer trailer with his phone number. Joke was on us!
SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT Interview with Morgan Batton Cont'd Congratulations on your purchase of The Vista Schooling & Event Center! When was the moment you both acted on the decision? And what is your first order of business? Thank you! Paul talked me into this one a bit ... but we were getting ready to start construction on our Chime Bell Farm. The opportunity to own a farm the caliber of The Vista was enticing, the timing was good, and the fact that it had an already viable business established made it a no-brainer for us. We are definitely inspired by your full schedule. Any tips for those of us managing work, family time, and horses? It is certainly not something I could manage all on my own. We have a phenomenal team of people at The Hitch & Tow and at Morgan Batton Eventing, and we are building The Vista team. They are the rock stars that make it possible. What is your current goal as a rider and trainer? Anything specific you have your mind on for 2022? Yes! I am aiming for a 3*L in the spring with I'm Sew Ready (Jackson), and if all goes well, run an Advanced in the fall. I have several young horses that I will start under saddle that should be exciting partners in the years to come. And finally, any traditions or plans for the holidays? Paul and I love to snow ski and have a short trip to Colorado planned this year. Other than that, we are staying in town and enjoying our families, and our newest edition, Lee! He will be nine months old for his first Christmas.
