G321 MEDIA STUDIES EVALUATION

You should answer all EIGHT questions in relation to YOUR product.

Where possible I have included

GUIDANCE bullet points to help.

These are NOT questions in their own right.

Finally I have included a link to a student’s work from last year that gained near top marks.

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

GUIDANCE • Discuss the ways in which your magazine incorporates generic conventions. Give specific examples.

• How does your magazine subscribe to, develop or challenge these conventions?

• Does your use of conventions indicate what other magazines have influenced your work? If so, then be specific with examples.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

GUIDANCE • What social groups are represented in terms of gender, age, class, race etc.? • Is gender represented in a stereotypical way? E.g. men dominant and women passive?

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

GUIDANCE • Would this be something that would be produced by a major distribution company, if yes who? Is it similar to existing products from that company? • Conversely, if your product is niche market: who would distribute it?

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

GUIDANCE • What is the age and gender of your target audience? • What other magazines are similar to yours; who do they appeal to?

5. How did you attract/address your audience?

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the product?

GUIDANCE • Strengths and weakness of the software used.

• Talk about the creative processes. Were there problems you faced and how did you resolve these issues?

• Discuss the decisions that you made in terms of photographic choices.

• Blogger: how easy was the process?

• What have you learnt about the ‘management’ of creating the three elements?

7. Looking back to your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

8. How successful do you feel your end product is in fulfilling the task? How well does it fit the brief?

General advice • Minimum of 900 words, maximum of 1000 words • Your presentation should be a mixture of text, visuals and should include hyperlinks • You are not graded on presentation • Reflect on the things you have learnt throughout the project process.
