exercise one and inspiration

some inspirational images from my Picasa image library.

Reference and Inspiration Maps These are maps of early San Francisco and some satelite images of the city. I was still in the process of finding a subject for Aqua Mappa and was researching the original coastline of SF.

Map scans and pigeon reference These images helped me ideate and create my spread for Aqua Mappa on pigeons and water in San Francisco.

Aqua Mappa For my spread in Aqua Mappa i scanned a map of San Francisco and used pieces of it to make a pigeon.

Type Exercise These are my ideations for the type exercise, here I focus more on plastics and ocean whereas later my focus shifts away towards oil refineries and other subjects.

1/10 1/10 ten percent of the plastic made this year will end up in the ocean.

TURN IT DOWN Over one million sea birds and one hundred thousand marine mammals die each year from consuming or becoming entangled in plastic. American citizens used one hundred billion plastic bags last year, many of which were used only a handful of times. If it’s not going into the ocean, it goes into landfills and pollutes the earth. If a plastic bag is offered to you, turn it down and protect our planet.

Mapping using Google Maps The screen shots on the right helped me map the oil refineries in California as well as all the #4 plastic bag recycling centers in San Francisco.

Illustrations first stages These are the drawings at the first stage on paper below, and on the right the illustrator vector versions.

Illustrated Cover 60,000 / 5 seconds This is my process for getting to the final result on the left. Once I placed the bags how I wanted I made a cut out solid background and layered it behind the illustrations to give it a silk screened look with misregistration.

crafting the narrative

Images for Arup spreads These are images represent the look and feel of my Arup spreads for me, some I used in the spreads and some were more inspiration based. The images change toward the end to the final design look.

Typology These are the 81 storm drains on the left and right side of Geary Blvd from 31st avenue to Park Presidio Ave. Almost all of these storm drains had trash on the grate or under it.

Template for Arup booklet This is the template I created with Gabriel for some of the first drafts of the Arup booklet made so the class could have a consistent look in the spreads.

Evolving Chapter Cover These are the changing chapter covers that evolved as we focused our subject matter for the writing of the chapter.

Evolving Chapter Material Through editing and focusing the writing of the chapter, the images I used throughout the chapter changed to reflect the material and concepts.

Arup Cover Design I wanted the collage / surreal look that Arup sometimes uses on their covers with photo montage. These are two ideations I came up with for the future of water.
