Matilda Season
“It’s Matilda Season!” Joyfully exclaims Carlos Capote lead vocalist of the Breeze Kings from the charming stage of Matilda’s Under the Pines in Alpharetta. Also, it’s the setting of our cover shoot for this edition of Pet Pages Atlanta. Matilda’s is a charming folksy outdoor music venue in the heart of Alpharetta that hosts an eclectic array of American folk music, Saturday evenings from May to October. Bring your chairs, picnics and friends, but best of all bring your want t’ be hound dog, because polite and soulful pooches are welcome to enjoy an evening out at Matilda’s Under the Pines. Matilda’s also houses a magical contemporary folk art gallery that you must check out while you are there or drop by earlier in the day. In honor of Ike, the former resident pet guardian, proceeds from purchases at the gallery will go to benefit Angels Among Us Pet Rescue.

Meet Kira! We call her "Kira Sue". She lives in Gwinnett, GA. She is almost 16 months old. Kira loves any chance of snow we get here in Georgia, her swimming pool, car rides and hiking! She adores her cat sisters and her 11 year old Black Lab brother Dutch, she may drive him a tad crazy. She has a slight obsession with birds, carpenter bee’s, digging and anything water; lake, beach, pool (that includes her water bowl in the house). We got Kira after our 14 year old beloved husky died last May. Kira has been such a blessing to our family and certainly keeps us on our toes. She is still working on her manners but is the happiest husky you’ll ever meet. Sent in by Jennifer Summers. Send your pictures to PetPagesAltanta@gmail.com with a brief description.

What you choose to feed your pet is the single most important health decision you can make for him. So why not feed him what he would naturally choose for himself if he could? As humans, it’s important that we eat fresh, raw foods like vegetables and fruits. It’s just as important for our dogs and cats, but as carnivores, their raw food should be raw meat. Raw foods are alive and packed with enzymes, nutrients, and antioxidants; their nutrients are more easily absorbed and digested; and they’re high in moisture so your pet is properly hydrated.
Raw feeding doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing. Adding some raw into your pet’s existing diet will boost their health naturally. Come talk with us at Fido’s Market. We understand that every dog is different and we have options for every situation and every budget. We specialize in raw feeding, have the largest selection of raw foods in the area, and would be happy to help you find something that will bring added health benefits to your pet and works with your lifestyle. Michelle Leiby Owner, Fido’s Market
Here are some of the benefits you’ll be able to see from a raw diet, but there are so many more that you can’t see. • Shiny, soft coat • Less “allergic reactions” (itchy skin, ear infections, paw chewing) • Less digestive issues • Reduces gas • Fresh breath, clean teeth, less doggy odor • No more picky-eater syndrome
• Arthritic symptoms are reduced • Better ability to manage weight • More energy • Less poop, firmer stools • Fewer insects and parasites • Helps manage chronic disease

Acupuncture for Animals???
Absolutely!!!
Dr. Mitzi Schepps, a certified veterinary acupuncturist, and her dog Mordi.
Many people have heard of using acupuncture to treat people, but did you know that it can also be used to heal animals? The Chinese discovered acupuncture over 4,000 years ago, making it the oldest form of healing known for both humans and animals. Today, Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) is widely used in Eastern countries (China, Japan, Korea, and others) and is steadily gaining popularity in Western countries to treat a variety of animal species, including dogs and cats. The goal of acupuncture is to promote the body to heal itself. This is achieved by correcting imbalances in the body, using tiny, painless needles to stimulate acupuncture points (acupoints). The acupoints are where nerve bundles and blood vessels come together and can be found on meridians (energy channels) that course over the body’s surface. The Chinese discovered that there are 361 acupoints in people and 173 in cats and dogs, astoundingly without the use of any technology! Modern research confirms that the stimulation of acupoints induces the release of endorphins, serotonin, anti-inflammatory hormones and other chemicals that are responsible for pain relief and healing.
Will your pet benefit from acupuncture? If your pet is suffering from a condition that causes pain, such as arthritis, hip dysplasia, spinal disc disease, neck, shoulder, knee or back pain, limping, muscle soreness or spasm, injuries or weak hind legs, then acupuncture is likely to help. Acupuncture generally works wonders for geriatric animals that are slowing down and having trouble with overall mobility. TCVM can also help with vomiting or diarrhea, respiratory conditions, skin conditions such as lick granulomas or allergies, behavioral disorders and neurological conditions such as paralysis and seizures. In addition, acupuncture is used to keep canine athletes in top physical condition by helping to keep muscles and tendons resistant to injury. Is acupuncture safe? Yes, but only if administered by a veterinarian who has successfully completed an extensive post-doctoral educational program in veterinary acupuncture. Because of the differences in anatomy, and the potential for harm if done incorrectly, only a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist (CVA) should treat your pet. In most countries, states, and provinces, acupuncture is considered a surgical procedure that only licensed veterinarians may legally administer.
Dr. Mitzi Schepps is the owner of Wellness Waggin’ Acupuncture, a mobile acupuncture practice servicing Marietta and surrounding areas. Contact them to see if acupuncture can benefit your dog or cat. www.wellwag.com

Stress
We tend to label behavior as either good, bad, or neutral depending on the context of the situation within which it is displayed. For people as well as our pets, behaviors are the result of our emotional state reflecting how we are feeling. For people, however, how we feel is based mostly on what we are thinking. So think about this, think about the behaviors that you want and consider which emotions will help in producing them for both you and your pet. Can you remember a time when your dog or cat “misbehaved”? How did you feel? Were you stressed, frustrated, angry or even worried? Did you notice that their behavior didn’t improve much, or maybe even got worse, the harder you tried to make it stop?
Now
With Your Pet:
How to Get the Behaviors You Want a lot of emotional drama, we “label” that event as BAD. It feels BAD and is highly memorable. The next time that BAD feeling is triggered, the same "protective/survival" behavior will happen because of the memory loop that was created. think of a time when your pet behaved beautifully; like joyfully coming to you in anticipation of love, play or a treat. You both feel wonderful and are focusing on what is happening in this moment. You feel connected, loving, trusting and appreciative of each other and the experience. This feels wonderful and is also highly memorable as it produces "feel good" hormones like oxytocin, dopamine and serotonin. These sensations are naturally addictive, creating a healthy desire to recur, as well as strengthening to the bonds you have with each other. Sounds simple, right? Just don't stress over stuff. Well, wouldn't it be wonderful if it could be so simple... but it can be!
Now
think about a time when your pet was getting something good from you, like loving attention, joyful play or a yummy treat. How did they behave? How did you feel? Have you noticed how your pets behave beautifully when they are getting something good from you? As you consider these two different scenes, Here are 3 key points to remember: 1. Identify and envision the behaviors what is the common thread?
The common thread is our emotional state and the natural emotional synchronization that occurs when we engage with others. This emotional synching is called Limbic Resonance and our pets are excellent at this. They are our emotional mirrors and are immediate and accurate in that refection.
that you want/like. Then notice when they show up by marking them with your genuine display of pleasure. Practice every chance you get as this will create repeatable memory loops and will become automatic for you over time with practice. 2. Identify the "feel good" emotions that support those behaviors. Remember it is the emotions that determine behaviors. Enjoy and practice feeling those emotions every chance you get because when you do, your pets will synchronize with those emotions and give you more of the behaviors that you want. 3. Confidently redirect and diffuse the behaviors that you don't want. No drama!
When we are stressing with anxious or angry thoughts, we are focusing on what "we don't want", "don't like" or "want to change". So are our pets. They can sense our emotional state loud and clear. Stress feels bad. It feels unsafe, unpredictable, out of control and scary. It is also not attractive or inviting and will deteriorate our bonds with our pets. When stress kicks in, neither you nor your pet know what you actually want because you are think about what both stressed. We become disconnected yet we you do want and will synchronize with them in a "fight or flight" physiologic state. When this happens, our brains focus less on what you don't want. are only able to focus on the perceived cause of By clearly envisioning what you would like to Continued on next page. stress. have happen you create the intention for it to happen. Confident, clear intention fosters the appropriate emotional state for our pets to understand us. When we are confident and clear about what we intend, we are able to communicate those intentions non-verbally and very precisely by a myriad of subconscious and conscious cues we give off. And when our intentions are good, it feels good and inviting. It feels curiously interesting, safe to explore or to figure out without the fear of making mistakes. You feel safe, loving, inviting and accepting the perfect foundation for creative learning, bonding, nonverbal communication and getting the behaviors that you want. The Pet Shop Girl
What drives a nine year old to open her own little business? A passion for animals and a love of fashion. Nine year old Isabella Masso is an entrepreneur, pet accessory designer and philanthropist. She hand makes flower bows and bow ties for pets. Making a difference one bow at a time, she donates a portion of her sales to rescue organizations and shelters. It all began when she told her Mom she wanted to start a business to help animals and make them look “fashionable and fabulous”. As word spread about her adorable bows and generosity, invitations to exhibit came from various pet festivals in Georgia. In addition to her contributions, Isabella donates bows to rescue organizations to create more “charm and cuteness” in the hopes that their animals find “furever homes”. As her business gained momentum and popularity, Isabella fell unexpectedly ill and had emergency surgery. A large tumor was removed from her abdomen and her recovery was slow and delicate. Isabella’s kindness came full circle, when she received get well pet pictures from all over the world on Facebook. Additionally, Canine Assistants provided a service dog that visited Isabella almost every day. Upon receiving a clean bill of health this year, she decided to go back to work. Isabella’s commitment to her cause has inspired others to share her story. Her bows have been showcased on TV and Isabella was interviewed by Fox 5 Atlanta’s very own Ron Gant. Her dedication and passion for animals has become an inspiration to others. Isabella’s dream of opening her very own pet shop and cage free rescue feels like it’s right around the corner. Share her dream by buying a bow and helping another animal in need. Please visit www. isabellaspetshop.com and like her on Facebook at Isabella’s Pet Shop.

Any breed and even cats can have EPI. The only way to confirm EPI is with a TLI (Trypsin-Like Immunoreactivity) blood test. The most common symptoms are:
Gradual wasting away despite a voracious appetite Eliminating much more frequently, sometimes every hour or two Stools are greasy voluminous yellowish cowplops, but sometimes grayish Eating their own stools, or other inappropriate substances Increased rumbling sounds from the abdomen Increased passing amounts of flatulence Some dogs do not show any typical signs Some experience intermittent watery diarrhea or vomiting Some dogs even display personality changes such as fearfulness or sudden aggression Most dogs and cats with EPI can be successfully treated by dietary supplementation with pancreatic enzymes. Dried extracts of bovine or porcine pancreas are available. An excellent source of information about pet EPI is the Epi4Dogs Foundation, Inc.

Dog Park Tips for a Better Trip Take the leash off. Leaving the leash on can cause your pet’s behavior to be stressful plus it could easily get tangled. Be vigilant. Keep your eye on your pet no matter how enjoyable your human companions maybe. Watch out for your pet’s temperament and the actions of the other dogs. Keep Moving. By keeping your pet active and moving you will avoid most conflicts. Save treats and toys for another time and place. No need to tempt food or possession aggressions. Stay calm and relaxed. Your attitude and energy can be felt by your pet so, relax and enjoy your time together. Watch the gate. Make sure the gates stay closed and dogs enter and leave on an individual basis. Close the gate behind you! Scoop The Poo! Not only does it stink, but dog waste left in the park attracts flies that bite and annoy pets and people. Waste can potentially contaminate ground water. Don’t leave your mess for someone else. Pick it up, besides you want to know the health of your pet and the best way to do that is to check what comes out.

Get Smart about Pet First Aid First aid for your pets is an important initial step to get them safely to the veterinarian. The biggest emphasis on caring for an ill or injured pet is safety. Your safety and the safety of your pet is vitally important. Remember that even though you have a special bond, animals in pain may bite when moved, so take safety precautions such as using thick towels to move them. First Aid for Trauma Situations When your pet has been injured, you need to muzzle them or wrap a towel around their snout prior to moving them, this allows them to breathe but keeps your hands safe. Use a sheet or board to move your pet, trying to keep the back straight at all times. Identify any obvious bleeding and lightly bandage the area to keep it clean. Do not wrap the area too tightly. If the bleeding soaks through the bandage, add more material to the top of the bandage. Once your pet is safely in your vehicle, remove or loosen the muzzle. This allows them to breathe properly on the trip. Once you arrive at the veterinary clinic, get help moving your pet into the clinic safely. First Aid for Heat Injuries There are multiple levels of heat injury. The first is heat stress, which occurs when your pet gets too hot but can bring its body temperature down to normal fairly quickly. Often they won’t play and seek out shade, refusing to play. Your pet should still be able to drink despite panting a lot. Heat exhaustion is when your pet gets too hot and cannot stop panting enough to drink. Immediately take your pet to a veterinarian for appropriate care.
If available, wet down your pet for the drive, and let it drink small amounts of ice water on the way to the veterinarian. Heat stroke is so severe when your pet is not acting normally. This may quickly worsen into an inability to walk, organ failure, and death. If your pet is not behaving normally and cannot stop panting, soak it to the skin with water and get to the veterinarian immediately! First Aid for Toxin Ingestion Call your veterinarian immediately! Do not attempt to make your pet vomit unless directed to do so by your veterinarian or poison control. Some toxins are worse if vomited up. Make sure that when you take your dog to the veterinarian, you bring all of the packaging or material that your pet may have consumed. This will help your veterinarian treat your pet more quickly and accurately.

The Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing. They each miss someone very special, someone who was left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent, his eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly, he breaks from the group, flying over the green grass, faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face, your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into those trusting eyes, so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together. Why Goats are Good for Our School
By: Hannah Smith of ABC Montessori School, Written at age 7 Goats are a wonderful thing at our school. They may If you really think about look weird or do strange it, having a goat is really things we are not use to hands-on learning, handsbut students get a chance on love and hands-on to learn a lot about animals farming. by having these goats. You See! This is why all schools know we learn love from need a goat! goats? By caring for them and learning about them and we also learn to love. By love I mean we learn how to form relationships with animals, you know they need us? By learning to take care of them we learn how to take care of other things like pets, plants and ourself. Also they can be our friends too! On a bad day or sad day a goat is a great thing to hug on. Did you know goats help us save money? You know Mr. Larry doesn’t have to pay to get his grass mowed he has our goats to do that. Also the students in Upper Elementary feed the goats our left over food. This helps cut down on trash cost and helps put nutrients back into the soil naturally. You know people pay big bucks for a goat poop? It is a great thing to make soil fertile and we get it for free! Another thing our goats help us do is learn about farming from Mr. Larry. We watch him take care of them and we learn about how to too! Our class is allowed to take care of them all by ourself now, we even wear our farming boots to do it. So far we have learned how to walk a goat, how they have babies, how to milk a goat, how to feed a goat, how to brush a goat and now we are watching the babies grow up. 49
Mister Migs brings couture style to functional dog apparel and accessories Watch out, Chanel, Fendi and Prada – Mister Migs is taking high couture to the dogs.
Dog Gear for Good
former associate professor of fashion design with Bauder College, who was intrigued by the idea of creating a pet apparel design house on par with any producing human fashions. Hopper kept the basics of the signature denim look and expanded the line to include other elements, such as environmentally friendly finishes like fray, tie-dye and weaves.
The non-profit organization headquartered in Tucker, Georgia, designs high-quality couture “Dog Gear for Good” – the “good” part providing real-world business experience for marginalized young adults, many of whom have developmental disabilities and autism. But what distinguishes Mister Migs’s designs from other pet apparel is an element of fun with a nod to the world’s high fashion houses.
Mister Migs plans to unveil its first collection of couture wear and gear at its “Denim Dogs Fashion Blast 2015” event, scheduled for Saturday, 7 November at Ambient + Studio in Atlanta. For more information on Mister Migs and the event, visit www.mistermigs. com.
“Dog owners love to dress up their dogs,” stated Karen Lynn, founder and president of Mister Migs. “It’s fun and an extension of their own style. You’ve just got to try it—It’s more fun than I ever imagined!” Lynn says “Dressing is not just about putting clothes on dogs. It’s also about gear like leashes, collars, backpacks and other things they need. We design first around our dogs’ taking into account how they move. Then we create their gear and load it with detail and style suitable for park play or uptown fun-- whatever it is they like to do with their human.” Mister Migs grew out of Lynn’s two great passions – dogs and fabric arts. What are microbubbles?
A revolutionary new way to keep your pet’s skin clean and healthy has made its way to the USA. It has been used extensively in veterinarian’s offices and grooming salons in Japan for years.

The Blue Berry Facial For Dogs and Cats tears tend to develop stains and exude a You may laugh until you try it!
The blueberry facial was developed by South Bark Dog Wash a pet spa in San Diego , and it may sound crazy, but once you’ve tried it on your pet you will understand why it is quickly become a favorite of pet owners in the Atlanta Area. The Blueberry Facial is a tear-less face wash, a body shampoo, and an all over color enhancer and brightener. The optical color brighter in it, dramatically improves all colors, not just white. The product is all natural and gentle. It smells wonderful. For pups with skin folds or tear stains, dogs with facial folds, such as pugs, boxers and bulldogs, tend to develop foul odors and sometimes even yeast infections. A blueberry facial can help with both issues. Dogs with excessive
“wet” odor. That wet area serves as a germ pool, and they can get skin infections. The blueberry facial can help by gently removing the dead skin cells and soothing the underlying skin.
Generally, berries help the body manufacture collagen which makes the skin supple and smooth. The scrub along with blueberries also contains aloe vera, avocado and coconut oil. Packed with vitamins and antioxidants, the natural powers of these ingredients heal, sooths and rejuvenates dry itchy skin. It is hypoallergenic and lick safe. It is good for all breeds, skin type for puppies and kittens six weeks and older. 61

There is nothing quite as cute as a pudgy orange tabby. They make you want to pick them up and give them a big hug. Unfortunately, what makes them cute is killing them. Overweight cats suffer from many diseases such as arthritis, diabetes, and liver disease to name a few. Type II diabetes, also known as non-insulin dependent diabetes is the most common problem in overweight cats. It represents 50% of all cases of diabetes. It occurs when, over a long period of time overeating results in a “wearing out” of insulin receptors. The ensuing diabetes can result in excessive drinking, urinating, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy and even death. Type II diabetes is completely preventable, with a manageable diet and giving your cat the opportunity to exercise often. he may be heavier than he should be. Look at your cat’s waistline. Want a happy cat? Get a box. Whether their predator instinct leaves them to believe that this is the best place to launch a surprise attack, or a safe and secure place to contemplate cathood, the box is essential. When you bring your new kitty home from the shelter, leave the box that she traveled in, out. Studies show cats with familiar secure places to hide adjust to new environments quicker and with less stress. Another reason why cats seek the sanctity of the box could be warmth. Cats are naturally a tropical species and even the domestic cat is most comfortable with temperatures between 86-97 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Basics about Canine Flu Canine influenza virus (CIV) also known as ‘kennel cough’, CIV spreads from one dog to another by human hands, clothing, bowls and toys; It is Highly contagious. About 80 percent of dogs exposed to the CIV become infected with the flu-like illness. Recovery time is about two weeks, but a secondary bacterial infection could progress to pneumonia typically in puppies and older dogs with low immune systems. The incubation period for the virus is two to four days before symptoms appear. Symptoms include an acute onset of coughing, sneezing and nasal discharge. There can also be fever and lethargy. Symptoms typically last a week or two. The best remedy for canine influenza is prevention. It’s important to keep your pet away from other dogs. Avoid dog parks, kennels or any other place where they’ll be around a lot of other dogs. Make sure your pet has a quiet, comfortable place to recover and plenty of water to drink.

r What is Cold Laser Therapy for Cats and Dogs?
Low Level Laser Therapy is a form of phototherapy or light therapy. This involves the application of low power light (red and near infrared light) to injuries or wounds to improve soft tissue healing and relieve both acute and chronic pain. It is also known as cold laser, soft laser or low intensity laser. Low level laser therapy aims to biostimulate. Because of the low power nature of low level laser therapy the effects are biochemical and not thermal and cannot cause heating and thereby damage to living tissue. This has both anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects.

Looking for a fun way to bond with your dog?
Agility Consider Dog Agility Training! M ,
Dog agility is a popular canine sport in which the owner helps their dog navigate through a variety of obstacles such as a tunnel, jumps, A-frames, dog walks, and weave poles. The activity alone is fun but the benefits are multi- faceted. Agility helps strengthen the bond between you and your dog, fulfills a dog’s natural instincts, and provides great exercise. The results of these benefits lead to the promotion of a mentally healthy and balanced pet. Helping curve issues such anxiety, and excessive excitement. All the while giving your pet a sense of purpose. There is nothing like the look on a dog’s face and the wag of the tail after having successfully cleared a high jump for the first time. While working on turning your pooch-pofor the
tato into a fun loving athlete, you will learn many new things about your “furkid”. Obstacles such as teeter-totters and dog walks test the nerves of a dog, and “pause tables” show and prove your dog’s ability to behave in a controlled manner. In general, it is fairly simple to introduce your dog to the activity of agility. But the use of good trainers will always make learning new things easier for your dog.
